Reading Passage: Health & Medicine English Speaking Nations Most Overweight (26th September, 2010)

Six of the seven countries with the highest obesity rates are English-speaking nations. This is according to a new report from the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development). The country at the top of the list is the USA. This is followed by Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland. The OECD looked at 33 different countries. The other 26 countries were non-English speaking. The ten slimmest countries included Japan, Korea, Italy, Switzerland and Sweden. Health experts are now wondering why English-speaking countries top the world’s obesity league. One theory is that they are all copying an American lifestyle; people eat a lot of fast food and a lot of it is in sizes considerably larger than those found in the rest of the world. The OECD report contains some interesting statistics. Australia has the fastest growing obesity rates. They are expected to rise by another 15 percent over the next decade. This compares to an increase of five per cent in South Korea. Education makes a big difference to weight in America and Sweden. Poorly educated women are 30 percent more likely to be overweight than those who had a good education. Swedish women with poor educations are more than twice as overweight as educated women. In the USA and UK, children are particularly overweight. Around 30 percent of British kids are overweight, compared with 40 percent

Reading Passage: Social Science Travel Chaos at British Airport (22nd, December 2010)

London’s Heathrow Airport is at the centre of criticism for its virtual shutdown during recent heavy snow in England. Heathrow is one of the world’s busiest airports, yet it failed to deal with snowfall of 9 centimetres, even 3 days after the snow fell. Airport authorities cancelled more than 3,200 flights, leaving thousands of frustrated passengers stranded in the terminal buildings. The situation is made worse as the Christmas holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year for air travel. What has been frustrating travelers most is the lack of flight information and basics like food and water. Passengers who have spent days sleeping on the airport floor are perplexed as to why only one third of flights are leaving, mainly long haul, when there has been no snow for three days.

Colin Matthews, chief executive of British Airports Authority, is facing a storm of criticism over this problem. Mr. Matthews could not give any real answers to journalists’ questions about the mess. He said in an interview with BBC radio: “I am really sorry…We are going to crawl over every aspect of these last few days when we’ve got every passenger in the right place.” Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron has added his worries that the airport should not come to a standstill because of snow. Industry rumors say the new newspaper will be called “The Daily”. There might even be a name to replace newspaper, as the new project will, of course, be paperless. There will be no print edition or even a Web edition of this new media. It will download straight to the iPad or alternative tablet for an unbeatable price of 99 cents a week. MessrsJobs and Murdoch maybe onto a winning thing here. The Apple boss has the technology to be able to deliver digital news and Mr. Murdoch owns the world’s biggest news corporation. They also both have a knack of knowing what people want.

There are reports that Murdoch is particularly interested in the iPad and how popular it is. He told Fox Business this week that The Daily was his “Number one most exciting project.” He seems to believe people will prefer to read the news on such a device rather than a traditional broadsheet newspaper. There are advantages of the tablet over a paper, such as the lack of origami-style gymnastics required to turn a page on a crowded train, or avoid the corner getting soaked in milk at the breakfast table.
