Tree Planting Koelreuteria paniculata is a species of flower-

ing plant in the family Sapindaceae, native to eastern Asia, in China and Korea. Common names include goldenrain tree, pride of India, China tree, or varnish tree. It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 7 m (23 ft) tall, with a broad, dome-shaped crown. The leaves are pinnate, 15–40 cm (6–16 in) long, rarely to 50 cm (20 in), with 7-15 leaflets 3–8 cm long, with a deeply serrated margin; the larger leaflets at the midpoint of the leaf are sometimes themselves pinnate but the leaves are not consistently fully bipinnate as in the related Koelreuteria bipinnata. The flowers are yellow, with four petals, growing in large terminal panicles 20–40 cm (8–16 in) long. The fruit is a three-parted inflated bladderlike pod 3–6 cm long and 2–4 cm broad, green ripening orange to pink in autumn, con-taining several dark brown to black seeds 5–8 mm diameter. There are two varieties: K. paniculata var. paniculata. Northern China and Korea. Leaves single-pinnate. K. paniculata var. apiculata (Rehder & E.H.Wilson) Rehder (syn. K. apiculata). Western China (Sichuan), intergrading with var. paniculata in central China. Leaves with larger leaflets commonly bipinnate. It is popularly grown as an ornamental tree in temperate regions all across the world because of the aesthetic appeal of its flowers, leaves and seed pods. Several cultivars have been selected for garden planting, including 'Fastigiata' with a narrow crown, and 'September Gold', flowering in late summer. The seeds are edible when roasted, but not commonly consumed.

WED MOVIE FESTIVAL Director:Peter Young

Writers:Richard Langston, Peter Young

Starring:Dave Dobbyn

Country:New Zealand

Release Date:2013 / 4 / 26

Synopsis:

The Last Ocean The Ross Sea, Antarctica is the most pristine stretch of ocean on Earth. A vast, frozen landscape that teems with life - whales, seals and penguins carving out a place on the very edge of existence. Californian ecolo-gist David Ainley has been traveling to the Ross Sea to study this unique eco-system for more than thirty years. He has written scientific papers describing it as a 'living laboratory'. Largely untouched by humans, it is one of the last places where the delicate balance of nature prevails. But an international fish-ing fleet has recently found its way to the Ross Sea. It is targeting Antarctic toothfish, sold as Chilean Seabass in up-market restaurants around the world. The catch is so lucrative it is known as white gold. Ainley knows that unless fishing is stopped the natural balance of the Ross Sea will be lost forever. He rallies his fellow scientists and meets up with a Colorado nature photographer and New Zealand filmmaker who also share a deep passion for this pristine corner of the world. All want to stop fishing and protect this last pristine eco-system. Together they form 'the Last Ocean' and begin a campaign taking on the commercial fishers and governments in a race to protect Earth's last un-touched ocean from our insatiable appetite for fish.

EDUCATION TOUR SITES

National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium(NMMBA) http://www.nmmba.gov.tw/english/index.aspx The NMMBA is located in Checheng of Pingtung County, facing the Taiwan strait in the west and standing beside the Tortoise Mt. in the east. The whole area of the district is 96.81 hectares, the construction of the museum division alone occupies 35.81 hectares,

whereas the surrounding grasslands and public facility divisions (like the parking lot, tourist information service) occupy more than 60 hectares. The building allocation can be divided into: the museum (the three theme exhibit halls of Waters of Taiwan, Coral

Kingdom Pavilion and Waters of the World and administration and teaching centers), several major building divisions like the husbandry center, public facilities, research building, maintenance facilities, international conference center and academic research

center. Coral Reef Previews

Here, different coral reef tanks are displayed to serve as a preview that prepares visitors for their trip to the under-water tunnel. The journey start from the surface, where

waves crash into the shore, Then, visitors pass the sloping edge of the reef, where the reef wall seems to drop to the bottom of the sea. Visitors may carefully examine the dif-

ferent species of coral that grow at different depths and notice the presence and interaction of fish and other crea-

tures that have adapted to these environments.

Shuangliu Forest Nature Center http://recreation.forest.gov.tw/RA_En_JP/0600003/RA_EN-01.htm Situated in Lion Township of Pingtung County, Shuangliu National Forest Recreation

Area is nestled among the mountains near Shoka on Southern Cross-Island Highway. This area ranges from 150 to 700 meters above sea level, spans 1596 hectares,

and has a mean annual temperature of 21 ºC. Although the area is situated in a tropical climate zone, there is usually a cool breeze due to the dense forest and nu-

merous rivers. This is one of the best low-elevation for-est bathing areas in southern Taiwan.

Fo Guang Shan Fo Guang Shan (literally "Buddha's Light Mountain") is an interna-tional Chinese Mahayana Buddhist monastic order based in the Republic of China (Taiwan), and one of the largest Buddhist

organizations. The headquarters of Fo Guang Shan, located in Kaohsiung, is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. The organization itself is also one of the largest charity organizations in Taiwan. The order also calls itself

the International Buddhist Progress Society.

History In 1967, Hsing Yun purchased more than 30 hectares in Dashu Township, KaohsiungCounty as the site for the construction of a monastery.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on 16 May 1967.

Fo Guang Shan embarked on many construction pro-jects, including university buildings, shrines, and a ceme-tery. In 1975, Fo Guang Shan's 36-metre tall statue of Amitabha Buddha was consecrated. In 1981, 15 years

after its establishment, the Great Hero Hall was built. During these times, many other Fo Guang Shan temples

outside the order's mother monastery were also built. Buddha Memorial Center

When Reverend Master Hsing Yun held the Bodhgaya International Full Ordination in India in 1998, he came to the attention a Tibetan lama who had been protecting a tooth relic of the Buddha since the destruction of Namgyal Monastery in Tibet during

the Cultural Revolution. The relic has been authenticated by several Tibetan rinpoches, who advised Kunga Dorje Rinpoche to build a stupa to house it so that the public could pay

their respects and make offerings. Since he was unable to do so due to old age, he and his advi-sors reached the consensus to donate the

tooth relic to Hsing Yun. The relic was offi-cially escorted to Taiwan on April 8, 1998.

Building plans for the Buddha Memorial Center started immediately. The site is situated imme-

diately adjacent to the main monastery and covers more than 100 hectares. The com-

plex faces east and is built along a central axial line. Beyond the Welcoming Hall are eight Chinese-styled pagodas on either side of the main avenue leading up to the Bodhi Square, about which are statues of the Buddha's main disciples and of the founders of

the principal schools of Chinese Buddhism.

dant landscapes of Kaohsiung: the lush Chai Mountain and Banping Mountain, the

clear and serene Lotus Pond, and Love River flowing across the city. This sub-

tropical city boasts its brilliant sunshine and gentle breeze from the passionate

sea. Sitting between Cijin Island and downtown, Port of Kaohsiung is theworld-

class port in Taiwan as well as a hub for international trade. The ceaseless ships

and containers from around the world represent the energy and vitality of the busi-

ness in Kaohsiung. Kaohsiung, a city of glamour, not only has unique features of

Jhouzai Wetland http://wetland-tw.tcd.gov.tw/WetLandWeb/web-en/wetland-n0034.html

Boundaries:

The wetland is situated at the Lianchih Pond area. It extends north to the Tsuwei-

hwa Road interchange of Provincial Highway 10, south to the Kaohsiung City Sce-

nic Area Administrative Center; east to Tsuwihwa Road, and west to Funtan Road,

next to the Lianchih Pond.

Introduction:

The wetland was originally designated in the city plan as Tsoying #1 Park or Tso-

Park 1. Subsequently, it was intended to become a Center for Traditional Arts and

Crafts by the city planner, but this did not materialize due to funding shortage. Dur-

ing Mayor Hsih's tenure (1998-2004), he accepted

the suggestion of local environmentalists to keep

the wetland's environment and establish a wetland

park to restore the landscape of reservoirs in the

Tsoying area. The wetland contains many floating

plants such as Water Chestnuts, Water Snowflake,

and Sleeping Water Lilies, which are a favorite of

Pheasant-tailed Jacanas. Bio-diversity in this micro environment is enhanced by

emerging plants such as Cattail and Common Reed, which provide hiding places

and shelters for jacanas. Currently, the wetland is adopted and managed by Wet-

lands Taiwan.
