II. Reading Comprehension

Directions: There are 12 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by somequestions. For

each of them there are four choices marked A,B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice.

Passage 1

Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study

says. Beehives (蜂窝) — either recorded or real — may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer ’s

crops.

In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in

them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But

before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if

the bees would scare elephants away.

Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a

stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had

calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya

and put a speaker in a close to each family.

28 中公教育学员专用资料 报名专线:400-6300-999

From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time

recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out

of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the

young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a

waterfall instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed.

Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.

Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after

hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial results were promising

enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants

are frightened away.

51. We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of ______. .

A. loud noises B. some crops C. video cameras D. angry bees

52. Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?

A. To record the sound of bee

B. To make a video of elephants

C. To see if elephants would run away

D. To find out more about the behavior of bees

53. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Young elephants ignore African honeybees.

B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.

C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.

D. Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.

54. As mentioned in the passage, Lucy ______.

A. works by herself in Africa

B. needs to test more elephant groups

C. has stopped elephants eating crops

D. has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms

Passage 2

Every business I know has been through the wringer during the past two years. Sadly the good times

aren’t returning any time soon. So I’ve compiled a list of some more creative and worthwhile ways

companies can save money to help entrepreneurs keep afloat in spite of the challenges.

Do random expense claim audits.

Abuse of expenses is regional, but if staff know that even their mobile phone bills are checked

版权所有 翻印必究

29 中公教育学员专用资料 报名专线:400-6300-999

occasionally, then they are less likely to take advantage. You should have very clear expense policies, so

fiddlers are not able to use confusion to get away with cheating.

Buy second-hand.

We frequently buy reconditioned kitchen equipment for our restaurants. Do not hesitate to choose

used over showroom-new if it makes economic sense.

Lead from the front about costs.

As a boss, you should constantly question costs and try to be seen to be abstemious rather than

extravagant — at least with corporate assets. If you are a spendthrift, you set a poor example that others

will copy — with the company’s money.

Ask for early payment discounts.

If you have the cash, it might be a great way to improve your margins. If your suppliers are under

financial pressure, they may well agree a 5 per cent discount for swift settlement. It would take almost two

years with current low interest rates to earn that much if you kept the money in the bank.

Understand what everyone does.

At least once a year, undertake a thorough analysis of all staff roles and try to work out their true

productivity and rationalise posts if necessary. Remember: no one ever tells you they are underworked or

that their contribution is inessential.

55. What is NOT the purpose of random expense claim audits?

A. To prevent employees from taking advantage

B. To make it difficult for Fiddlers to succeed in this way

C. To examine their mobile bills occasionally

D. To cut costs in this aspect

56. What does the underlined word ―abstemious‖ mean?

A. Furious B. Friendly C. Thrifty D. Extravagant

57. You can save money if you pay in advance because ______.

A. your margins will be increased when you do so

B. the discount you enjoy is more than the bank’s interests

C. the suppliers are under financial pressure

D. the banks are going to be bankrupt

58. Which is NOT a creative and worthwhile way to help bosses save money?

A. Choose used equipment as substitutes.

B. Set examples as an frugal boss.

C. Early payment to obtain discount

D. Rationalize posts frequently.

Passage 3

Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents. Most do it using satellites and other

high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way — by studying

movements of random floating garbage. As a scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of

research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the

northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to

try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.

Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total — fell into the ocean

in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected,

the company told him that they didn’t. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned

when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about

the patterns of ocean currents.

The Pacific Northwest is one of the world’s best areas for beachcombing because winds and currents

join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a

lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he

collected reliable information on 1, 600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and

improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study.

As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about

any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and

ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects

ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.

59. The underlined phrase ―swap meets‖ in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _______.

A. fitting rooms B. trading fairs C. business talks D. group meetings

60. Ebbesmeyer phoned the shoe company to find out ______.

A. what caused the shipping accident

B. when and where the shoes went missing

C. whether it was all right to use their shoes

D. how much they lost in the shipping accident

61. How did Ebbesmeyer prove his assumption?

A. By collecting information from beachcombers

B. By studying the shoes found by beachcomber

C. By searching the web for ocean currents models

D. By researching ocean currents data in the library

Passage 4

The greatest contribution to civilization in the century may well be the air-conditioning and American

leads just as amazing is the speed with which this situation came to be. Air-conditioning began to spread in

industries as a production aid during World War II. Today most Americans need to take air-conditioning for

granted to homes, offices, factories, theatres, shops, studios, schools, hotels, and restaurants.

But not everybody is aware that high cost and easy comfort are merely two of the effects of the vast

cooling of American. In fact, air conditioning has substantially altered the country’s character and customs.

Many of the byproducts are so conspicuous that they are scarcely noticed. To begin with,

air-conditioning transformed the face of America by making possible those glassy, boxy, sealed-in

skyscrapers. It has been indispensable, no less, to the functioning of sensitive advanced computers, whose

high operating temperatures require that they be constantly cooled.

It has, at will, forced families into retreating into families with closed doors and shut windows,

reducing the interactions of neighborhood life. It is really surprising that the public’s often noted

withdrawal into self-pursuit and privacy has coincided with the historic spread of air-conditioning. Though

science has little studied how habitual air-conditioning affects mind and body, some medical experts

suggest that, like other technical avoidance of natural variations in c limate, air-conditioning may damage

the human capacity to adapt to stress. If so, air-conditioning is only like many other greatly useful technical

developments that liberate man from nature by increasing his productivity and power in some way —

while indirectly weakening him in others.

63. According to this selection, which of the following constitutes the unique character of U.S.?

A. Its excessive use of air-conditioning.

B.Its advanced computerized civilization.

C.Its public’s retreating into self-pursuit.

D.Its greatest contribution to human civilization.

64. According to the author, the chief consequence brought about by the wide application of

air-conditioning is ____.

66. Who benefits the least from air-conditioning according to the author?

A. Medical experts. B. Manufacturers. C. Factory laborers. D. Consumers.

executive officer. Willard Strong, Chairman of the Board of Randolph Chemical, said, ―We are delighted to

have found someone of Michelle’s caliber to lead our organization.‖

Michelle Brown brings to the table a reputation as a strict cost cutter. Prior to joining Randolph, Dr.

Passage 9

Puerto Rican Cuisine

Puerto Rico, a Caribbean island rich in history and remarkable natural beauty, has a cuisine all its own.

Immigration to the island has helped to shape its cuisine, with people from all over the world making

various contributions to it. However, before the arrival of these immigrants, the Taino people lived on the

island of Puerto Rico. Taino cuisine included such foods as rodents, fresh shellfish and fish fried in corn

oil.

Many aspects of Taino cuisine continue today in Puerto Rican cooking, but it has been heavily

influenced by the Spanish, who invaded Puerto Rico in 1508, and Africans, who were initially brought to

Puerto Rico to work as slaves. Taino cooking styles were mixed with ideas brought by the Spanish and

Africans to create new dishes. The Spanish extended food choices by bringing cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep

to the island. Africans also added to the island’s food culture by introducing powerful, contrasting tastes in

dishes. In fact, much of the food Puerto Rico is now famous for — coffee, coconuts, and oranges — was

actually imported by foreigners to the island.

A common assumption many people make about Puerto Rican food is that it is very spicy. It’s true

that chili peppers are popular; aij caballero in particular is a very hot chili pepper that Puerto Ricans enjoy.

However, milder tastes are popular too, such as sofrito. As the base of many Puerto Rican dishes, sofrito is

a sauce made from chopped onions, green bell peppers, sweet chili peppers, and a handful of other spices.

It is fried in oil and then added to other dishes.

B. Caribbean history

C. the island’s natural beauty

D. Puerto Rican cuisine

84. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A. Taino dishes are important in Puerto Rican cooking.

B. Food imported by foreigners isn’t really Puerto Rican.

C. Puerto Rican cooking has many outside influences.

D. African foods have probably had the most influence.

85. How is sofrito used?

A. It is eaten before meals.

B. It is added to other dishes.

C. It is used where foods are too spicy.

D. It is eaten as a main dish.

86. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Softito is a type of extremely spicy food.

B. Many people think Puerto Rican food is spicy.

C. Puerto Rican cuisine uses a lot of chili peppers.

D. Aij caballero is a type of chili pepper.

Passage 10

Under normal conditions the act of communication requires the presence of at least two persons: one

whosends and one who receives the communication. In order to communicate thoughts and feelings, there

must be aconventional system of signs and /or symbols which mean the same to the sender and the

receiver.

The means of sending communications are too numerous and varied for systematic

classification;therefore, the analysis must begin with the means of receiving communication. Reception of

communication isachieved by our senses. Sight, hearing, and touch play the most important roles. Smell

and taste play very limitedroles, for they can not receive intellectual expression from fully developed

systems of signs and symbols.

39 中公教育学员专用资料 报名专线:400-6300-999

Example of visual communication are gesture and mimicry. Although both frequently

accompanyspeech, there are systems that rely solely on sight, such as those used by deaf and dumb persons.

Another meansof communicating visually is by signals of fire, smoke, flags, or flashing lights. Feelings

may be simplycommunicated by touch, such as by handshaking or backslapping, although a highly

developed system ofhandstriking has enabled blind, deaf, and dumb persons to communicate intelligently.

Whistling to someone, applauding in a theatre, and other forms of communication by sound rely upon the

ear as a receiver. The mostfully developed form of auditory communication is, of course, the spoken

language. The means ofcommunication mentioned so far have two features in common: they last only a

short time, and the personinvolved must be relatively close to each other. Therefore, all are restricted in

time and space.

87. The author explains that he will deal with reception of communication first because ______.

A. communication actually takes place when the message is received

B. there are more means of receiving than of sending communications

C. reception of communications involves use of the senses

Passage 11

The Deadly Smoking

A new report from the United States surgeon general finds that smoking tobacco is even deadlier than

had been known. The report says smoking causes birth defects — a leading cause of death among babies. It

also links smoking to cancer of the liver and colon, diabetes and other diseases.

The first U.S. surgeon general’s report on tobacco and health was released in 1964. It was the first

scientific report to link smoking with lung cancer and heart disease. Now, 50 years later, Acting Surgeon

General Boris Lushniak has released a new report. His report provides more evidence about smoking

tobacco and how it can harm health. ―If we’re going to work together to achieve a society free of

tobacco-related disease, this must be understood,‖ said Lushniak.

The new report urges increased use of tobacco-control measures. The suggested controls include

raising prices of cigarettes, and expanding bans on smoking in enclosed spaces. The 2014 report calls for

research on whether lowing the amount of nicotine in cigarettes could help people stop smoking. It also

contains new findings. ―Today we know that smoking is a cause of diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and poor

response to treatment of arthritis, and increased risk of tuberculosis, disease and death. We’re adding colon,

rectal and liver cancer to the long list of cancers caused by smoking,‖ said Lushniak.

Doctor Lushniak also said smoking suppresses the body’s natural defenses for fighting disease. He

said this increases a smoker ’s likelihood of getting an infectious disease. ―One of the most disturbing

findings is that the disease risks from smoking by women have risen sharply over the last fifty years.

Women are now as likely to die from smoking as men, women smokers’ risk of lung cancer is now the

same as men, and more women die from chronic lung disease than men,‖ said Lushniak.

The new report finds that those who do not smoke are at a higher risk for stroke if left unprotected

from tobacco smoke. The latest research also shows damage to unborn children. Babies are more likely to

be born with cleft palate if the mother smokes. The chemicals in tobacco smoke can have lasting effects on

brain development in a baby.

Passage 12

Dollars and cents are the basic units of American money. The back of all dollar bills are green (hence

―greenbacks‖). The commonly used coins are: one cent (penny), five cents (nickel), 10 cents (dime), and

25 cents (quarter). 50 pieces (half dollar) and silver dollars (not really silver anymore) are gaining in usage,

while there has been talk of phasing out the penny that’s inflation for you. ―Always carry plenty of quarters

when traveling. Very useful for phones, soda machines, laundry machines, etc.‖

There is generally no problem in using US dollars in Canada, but this is never possible in reverse.

It’s useful always to carry small change for things like exact fare buses, but do not carry large sums of

cash. Instead keep the bulk of your money in travelers’ cheques which can be purchased both in the US and

abroad and should be in dollar denominations. The best known cheques are those of American Express, so

you will have the least difficulty cashing these, even in out of the way places. Thomas Cook

travelers’cheques are also acceptable, especially as lost ones can be reclaimed at some car rental

companies. Dollar denomination cheques can be used like regular money. There’s no need to cash them at

a bank: use them instead to pay for meals, supermarket purchases or whatever. Ten or twenty dollar

cheques are accepted like this almost always and you’ll be given change just as though you’d presented the

cashier with dollar bills. Be prepared to show I.D. when you cash your cheques.

Credit cards can be even more valuable than travelers’cheques, as they are often used to guarantee

room reservations over the phone and are accepted in lieu of deposit when renting a car—indeed without a

credit card you may be considered so untrustworthy that not only a deposit but your passport will be held

as security too. The major credit cards are VISA, Master Charge and Access, Diners Club and American

Express. If you hold a bank card, it could well be worthwhile to increase your credit limit for travel

purposes—you should ask your bank manager.

97. Why is it useful to carry enough 25-cent coins with you?

A. They can act as small change for theexact bus fares.

B. There is generally no problem in using them in Canada.

C. As a basic unit of money, they are gradually gaining in usage.

D. They may come in handy for pay phones or laundry machines.

98. It is not necessary to carry cash instead of dollar travelers’cheques because the latter can be

______.

A. used for phones, bus fares and hotel reservations

B. used to pay in restaurants and big stores

C. used like credit cards, even in remote areas

D. exchanged easily, even at car rental companies

99. The phrase―in lieu of‖ (line 2, paragraph 4) most probably means ______.

A. on behalf of

B. in line with

C. with regard to

D. instead of

100. This passage is most probably taken from ______.

A. a tourist guide

B. a bank brochure

C. a booklet about car rental

D. a handbook on U.S. currency
