The Ministry of Education recently published a booklet entitled ‘Leading Local Curriculum’. It’s about schools designing rich

opportunities, meaningful learning experiences to enrich our students’ schooling and citizenship. The booklet states:

“Such experiences energise everyone – students, teachers, parents and whānau, and community members.”

Our local curriculum is unique to our school and responsive to what we see as priorities, preferences and issues that matter to our

school.

Richmond School’s EOTC (Education Outside The Classroom) programme is very much part of our ‘local curriculum’. Field trips and

camps are at the forefront of this programme.

Our Year 1&2 syndicate students attend a one-day camp at Quinney’s Bush during Term 4, the Senior syndicate students attend three

day camps (Lake Rotoiti, Golden Bay, Canvastown on a rotational basis) in Term 1 and next week the Middle syndicate children will be

on a two-day camp at Bridge Valley (Teapot Valley, even years).

These camps (and field trips) assist with the implementation of the Ministry of Education’s decree of “Your local curriculum is the way

you bring the New Zealand Curriculum to life in your school.”

It is our way of being responsive to the needs, interests and aspirations of our learners and families. These are also about helping

learners engage with our local environment and how we endeavour to cater for and develop their knowledge, skills, values and key

competencies so they can become confident and connected life-long learners.

Such experiences are only possible with parent support and their involvement. Parents need to sign consent forms, assist with

transport, be ‘camp parents’ and lead some activities on camps/excursions. Many parents attended the Middle syndicate camp

information evening last night – we thank you sincerely.

If you have other thoughts/suggestions regarding our localised curriculum, then please complete the tear-off below and return it to the

office. Many thanks.

My/our thoughts about the present ‘local curriculum’ EOTC happenings as described above:
