A mini Labrador died after she was poisoned in Erasmuskloof, east of Pretoria, on Monday.
Two other dogs of the Van Wyk family were also poisoned but survived.
Elmira van Wyk said she and her daugh-ter were home alone when she heard the dogs fi ghting.
“This is something the three animals, Nala, Jessie and Daisy, never do. I ran outside to see what was happening and saw Jessie lying on the ground, heaving badly,” she said.
“I pulled the other two off her and she slowly crawled into the house.”
When Van Wyk’s husband Gerhard and her son arrived home a few minutes later, the other two dogs also started looking unwell.
“My husband rushed all the dogs to the vet, where they were treated. Unfortunately Daisy, our mini Labrador, died. Nala has since been discharged, but Jessie is still being treated at the vet,” said Van Wyk.
The Van Wyks searched their garden for a snake they saw a couple of days earlier. Instead, they found Vienna sausages laced with poison lying around their garden.
“We took it to our vet and she suspects it is a common garden poison. We also noticed some black spots that looked like the two-
step poison. Our children are heartbroken. This is an incredibly sad situation.”
Van Wyk now fears for the safety of her family. On the same night the dogs were poi-soned, the family also found the front gate open, though nobody entered their home.
“We have since had security companies come and inspect our alarm system and en-sured that our security is tightened,” said Van Wyk.
Tshwane SPCA spokesperson Korky Levanon has previously said the most common poison used is aldicarb, which has been dubbed two-step. It is sold as temik.
“Temik is not avail-able for the public to buy. Only registered farmers can purchase it. The problem is the poison gets stolen from farmers and used to poi-son dogs. The poison is easily purchased at any taxi rank.”
The most common way the poison is fed to dogs is by putting it in Vienna sausages. The poison resembles gun powder, and is highly poisonous, says Levanon.
“All it takes is ingesting less than half a teaspoon of two-step and any animal or toddler is more than likely to die a horrible, painful death with the nervous system being affected and death by asphyxiation.”
Six other dogs were poisoned in separate episodes in Pretoria in November last year.
Residents in Jacqueline Street in The Reeds are living in fear of the dangerous Uitsig Road.
They say cars constantly veer off the road and plummet through a servitude and into houses.
Resident Byron Rive said the sharp 90° bend at the end of Uitsig Road had caused many drivers to lose control.
“Many people speed down the road, of-ten reaching speeds in excess of 140km/h. They do not see the approaching bend and end up losing control and driving through my boundary wall. It is a death trap.”
Rive said most accidents occurred in the early hours of the morning.
“Many of the people who have ended up driving through my wall were drunk. One man was so drunk, when police came to speak to him, he could not even stand.”
Democratic Alliance ward council-lor Casper McDonald urged motorists to exercise caution on the road.
“The council has to replace and repair
broken barriers and fl attened road signs up to six times a year. The problem is not with the condition of the road, but with the fact that motorists are not taking responsibility for their actions.”
“Motorists on Uitsig Road should start driving carefully and with integrity. This means they should do the right thing at all times, even when nobody is watching them,” added McDonald.
He said an investigation into the viabil-ity of installing a speed bump had been done, but found that installing one might cause even more accidents as it might cause motorists driving at high speed to lose control.
“If residents call for another study into what might be done on the corner, I will liaise with the right departments at the metro to ensure that it is completed.”
Rive said although no one had died while crashing through his wall, he was living in constant fear.
“My bedroom is not far from the boundary wall where people keep crash-ing through.”

A signifi cant private sector mixed housing development for Centurion is on the cards, which will see the building of 14 000 hous-ing units, including 1 400 RDP houses, in the Monavoni area.
The R5-billion project will be undertaken over a period of eight years, Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa announced last week.
Delivering his state-of-the-city address, he said it was clear the private sector was now coming on board with the development of mixed-income housing developments throughout the city.
He said the Monavoni project would yield about 10 000 temporary job opportunities during construction and 5 000 permanent jobs following conclusion.
Tshwane, in partnership with the provin-cial department of human settlements, had identifi ed several mega projects.
In Tshwane, this would result in the development of about 180 875 housing units within the next fi ve years – clustered in fi ve nodes, including Tshwane south.
The Tshwane south project would see thousands of housing units built in Olieven-houtbosch Extensions 27, 36 and 60.
Ramokgopa said about R36, billion would be required to realise these projects
and various funding sources had been ear-marked to ensure this happened.
“As part of this programme, within the next fi nancial year, a total of 5 000 serviced stands are expected to be delivered,” the mayor said.
Ramokgopa also gave more detail on the R6,1 billion African Gateway development – a signifi cant landmark of mixed-use deve-lopment in the heart of Centurion.
“This project is strategically located on an 80 hectare site and will be integrated within the planned Government and Tshwane International Convention Centre (TICC) precincts,” he said.
Organisations such as the African Union and the United Nations were expected to move their offi ces to Centurion.
The mayor said planning for the construc-tion of a 40 000 square metre building was at an advanced stage with public participa-
tion processes already completed. “The city is currently undertaking due
diligence in enabling the commencement of construction.”
About the much-debated Symbio City concept, that entailed the conversion of ten hectares of land that would link the Cen-turion Gautrain station with the existing Centurion Mall, Ramokgopa said the city had approved the use of the Symbio City land parcels owned by the metro for use by private developers.
“The city is currently in the process of completing the public participation process in relation to the closure of the public open space, which forms part of the develop-ment,” he said.
“In this regard, hearings of objections received have been completed and the city is engaging those affected to identify the most amicable solution.”
The city is cur-rently in the process of completing the public participation process in relation to the closure of the public open space.

Residents in Die Hoewes are up in arms over a new entertainment franchise on the corner of Von Willigh Avenue and Rabie Street.
Industrial Shisanyama, an entertain-ment venue where patrons can braai meat and listen to live music, is located between two residential complexes and has become a nuisance for residents.
A petition calling for the venue to stop playing loud music late at night was recently drawn up by residents and submitted to Democratic Alliance (DA)ward councillor Clive Napier.
“At certain times of the night and on weekends the noise produced has been excessive and kept people awake,” said Napier.
“They exceed the Tshwane noise regulations as well as those of Gauteng. A number of spot fi nes have been issued and the facility is now the subject of court action.”
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said: “The city planning and develop-ment department suspects this is an illegal business, but this will have to be substantiated with evidence.”
Tshepho Semenya, owner of the Cen-turion venue, said the business had been properly registered. “We have registered the business, and have all the proper doc-umentation. The only outstanding issue is with the re-zoning of the property.”
Napier said he hoped the matter would be fi nalised soon.

Net so ’n snuffi e van Antonia Banderas se parfuum.
“Dit is ’n ordent-like plek,” snuif De Beer.
Hy ken die gayklub-toneel goed. In sy jeug was hy vir agt jaar ’n DJ by ’n kroeg in Johannes-burg. “Ek was toe in die lugmag.
“Mense geniet beskerming by

The creation of a city of excellence – where all citizens can live with dignity, pride and equality – is well under way with a fi rmly established programme of remaking the people’s capital through radical economic transformation and spatial justice.
Delivering his 2015 state-of-the-city-address in the context of the 60th anniver-sary of the adoption of the Freedom Charter in Kliptown in 1955 and 15 years of the establishment of local government in its cur-rent form, Tshwane metro mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa on Thursday made it clear that nothing will detract from realising his vision for the city.
Speaking at Freedom Park, the mayor said Tshwane metro was the fourth-largest municipal economy in the country and as measured by gross domestic product (GDP), the City contributed 10.1% to national GDP.
“Tshwane clearly displays great potential, with relatively high rates of people with higher education, the fastest growing local economy in South Africa and the second highest average household income within Gauteng,” the mayor said.
“In 2001, our unemployment rate was over 30% and today it is 21%.
More importantly, in 2001 our youth unemployment was over 40% and now it is close to 30%.
Job creation was high on the agenda of the city and 30 208 Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities had been created between July 2013 and June 2014 with a target of 40 000 by June this year.
Ramokgopa said the city had four sectors
in which they wanted to focus their efforts in the next 15 years towards the achievement of Vision 2055, namely: education and the knowledge economy; agriculture and agro-processing; business and diplomatic tourism; and the green economy.
He said the metro had transferred a sig-nifi cant amount of land by way of donation.
Over 148 land parcels have been trans-ferred to churches and the taxi industry as well as converting leasehold to full title to over 50 black township business people in Mamelodi, Atteridgeville and Marabastad.
The value of the land donated amounted to more than R60m.
“It will give us great pleasure to see land ownership restored to our people. Since the beginning of the fi nancial year, over 4 000 title deeds have been issued and almost 18 000 issued since 2011,” the mayor said, adding that the city however had a total of 8 237 title deeds, which remained uncol-lected by the rightful owners.
The city’s A Re Yeng Rapid Bus Transit project had been operational from Janu-ary 2015 in Trunk Line 2A from the CBD to Hatfi eld. He said A Re Yeng fl eet had transported 122 864 people from January to March 2015 with an average of a 40% increase in daily ridership.
The mayor said a pre-feasibility study for the Light Rail Transit system had been done and was envisaged to complement current transport modes such as the Gautrain and the A Re Yeng systems.
He said the city had vowed to keep the power stations operational and 100MW will be generated from the power stations.
Ramokgopa said the city was one of the few districts selected as a pilot towards the
roll-out of National Health Insurance (NHI) and to this regard, several clinics had been upgraded while new ones were being built.
He announced the city would be hosting the Gauteng Carnival from 2015 onwards, which will be the biggest cultural spectacle in the capital city. The 2015 Gauteng Car-nival arrives at a time when the country is celebrating ‘60 years of the adoption of the Freedom Charter’.
About safety and security, the mayor said the Tshwane metro police department (TMPD) commenced with extending its strategic ward-based deployment within Tshwane metro and it can now be announced the TMPD has seven operational regional offi ces providing a 24/7 metro policing service.
He said a total of 2 000 metro police trainees will also formally graduate by the end of November 2015 and will be deployed to all 105 wards across the metro.
As committed to in last year’s address, the TMPD continued with the roll-out of CCTV cameras and 151 have been opera-tionalised within the city.
Ramokgopa stressed that a zero toler-ance approach to any form of misconduct based on the underlying precepts of fairness and workplace justice had been adopted and in this regard, the city had successfully completed 96 forensic investigations during the 2013/2014 fi nancial year and 112 in the current fi nancial year with 43 matters having been referred for disciplinary action during the current fi nancial year.

The Tshwane metro has committed to working closely with the lead-ership of informal traders in the metro.
Tshwane has a vision of eventually provid-ing free Wi-Fi connectivity to every street, every corner and every household in the metro. To get a step closer to achieving this, another 1 848 sites will be deployed in the next 18 months – from Bronkhorstspruit to Centurion.
The Tshwane free Wi-Fi project has already served more than two million users over 575 sites since its roll-out in November 2013, Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramok-gopa said in his 2015 state-of-the-city ad-dress on Thursday.
Ramokgopa said access to Wi-Fi should be viewed as a basic service, undeniably analogous to that of water and electricity. The metro therefore started providing free connectivity in public spaces throughout low-income communities, beginning with a capacity for 25 000 users spread across fi ve locations in Soshanguve, Mamelodi and At-teridgeville.
“We currently have coverage across all seven regions of the metro with at least one free Wi-Fi site in 96 wards. In addition, there are 566 801 unique devices or users registered and almost 15 million total ses-sions have been logged thus far, representing a growth rate of 278,8% in comparison to
the last calendar year,” the mayor said in his address, which he delivered at Freedom Park.
At the same time, he announced Tshwane Wi-Fi Chat, a service available over Tshwane’s free Wi-Fi network, which allowes the municipality to have real-time conversations with citizens.
Ramokgopa said this hyper-localised social network would enable the metro to create live chat rooms pertaining to any relevant discussion topic, including updates such as load-shedding or scheduled mainte-nance work.
“The provision of free access to the internet promotes social inclusion, stimu-lates inclusive growth and supports learning through the accessibility of digital educa-tion material. The economic benefi ts of free Wi-Fi are the result of improved market effi ciencies due to the reduction of informa-tion asymmetries,” he said.
Independent research showed that, on average, every 10% increase in broadband penetration increased a country’s GDP per capita by 1,28%, increased employment by 0,28% and facilitated the growth of SMMEs.
As an additional service to residents, Wi-Fi TV was also launched in November last year, which resulted in hundreds of unem-ployed young people being interviewed to
Tshwane executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa and some of the city’s new Wi-Fi users.
recruit local journalist teams.“In the fi rst fi ve months since its launch,
Wi-Fi TV has had over 6 million views, im-mediately becoming the most popular con-tent on the Tshwane Free Wi-Fi network.”
Ramokgopa said the secret to the city’s success with Wi-Fi had been to ensure that costs were kept low, beginning with small
successes and then accelerating the speed of the project over short periods of time.
“The result is the fruition of a dream that many South Africans share – that internet access can be made available to the poor, thereby contributing towards bridging the digital divide and ensuring a prosperous country for all.”
Informal traders will remain a permanent fi xture of the capital city, as this resilient and innovative group of entrepreneurs forms a unique part of African cities and completes the DNA of cities on the continent.
To this end, the Tshwane metro has com-mitted to working closely with the leadership of informal traders in the metro to cement their place within the economy of the ‘peo-ple’s capital’, Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa said.
He said the metro would continue to develop the necessary trading infrastructure for the informal sector in the next fi ve years and to this end, about R100 million would be invested by the metro.
The city will also focus on the creation of business development strategies targeting in-formal traders, which will contribute towards improving the competitiveness of the sector within the city.
This will include, but not be limited to, linking informal business with formal busi-ness, facilitating the provision of fi nancial and non-fi nancial interventions, identifying market opportunities as well as training and re-skilling. “Once we have collectively identi-fi ed all legitimate traders, we will accelerate the allocation of permits in a manner that enhances the sector’s ability to generate greater income and ensures peaceful co-existence with the formal sector, pedestrians and other road users,” Ramokgopa said in his 2015 state-of-the-city address delivered on Thursday at Freedom Park.
The mayor said the metro was committed to creating bold opportunities for identifi ed traders who could be accommodated in des-ignated spaces. “This includes assigning a co-operative owned by informal traders and the responsibility to clean the inner city and assist with the maintenance of certain infrastructure within the CBD.”
Ramokgopa sent a clear message to all the identifi ed street hawkers that none of them would go hungry and that the municipality would unleash their potential and show the rest of the country what could be achieved when all parties worked together.
“In the City of Tshwane, we can assure you that you have a dependable, friendly and progressive ally,” he said.
Firmly working towards the realisation of the commitment to the traders, Ramokgopa said the metro had successfully concluded ne-gotiations with informal trading organisations located and operating in the inner city.
The outcome included a declaration signed between the offi ce of the mayor and the Tshwane Barekisi Forum, Tshwane Micro, Tshwane Nafcoc, TITCO and the Tshwane Informal Traders Forum.6253

Wonderboom Airport on the up and upDaily scheduled fl ights from Wonderboom Air-port to Cape Town International Airport will be launched in less than three months, executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa announced.
Three daily return fl ights will be operated by South African Airways (SAA) and Airlink, who have entered into a commercial joint venture to provide the new scheduled fl ights between Pretoria and Cape Town.
Wonderboom Airport, which was fi rst opened in 1937, has a 1 828 metre-long run-way, but it is not yet known what size and type of aircraft will be used for the fl ights.
SAA could not be reached for comment about the possible introduction of fl ights to other major centres from Wonderboom or how competitive air fares would be.
The mayor also announced that Tshwane is currently in discussions with an aircraft manu-facturer for the long-term lease of a hanger at Wonderboom Airport for the building of aircraft with an initial investment in the facility of an estimated R200 million.
Delivering his state-of-the-city address last week, Ramokgopa said the Paramount Group was expected to initially create 400 perma-nent, high-skilled jobs in a range of different engineering disciplines, with an additional 400 jobs being created in the local supplier base, tangibly demonstrating the potential benefi ts of the project to Tshwane residents.
“The process to involve the private sector in the development and management of Wonder-boom Airport is progressing. The transactional advisory team – Business Enterprise, Uni-versity of Pretoria – appointed to assist with optimising the return on Wonderboom Airport has completed much of the preliminary work
and the study is now at a point where the team will interact with a variety of internal stake-holders,” the mayor said.
Tshwane will advertise an expression of interest in the new fi nancial year and the metro expects the process to reach fi nality before the end of the next fi nancial year.
He said Tshwane had a long-standing asso-ciation with the aviation industry and currently about 1,5 million advanced components were manufactured within the metro’s boundaries for commercial airline manufacturers such as Airbus Industries and Boeing.
“This is a continuing testament to the in-novation and technical skills of our world-class engineers, who are also graduates of our local universities, and to the enabling environment for high-tech manufacturing within Tshwane,” the mayor said.
He said a recent homegrown development that had drawn international attention to Preto-ria was the arrival of a brand-new aircraft that had been conceived, designed, manufactured and test-fl own by the Paramount Group.
“The multi-role AHRLAC aircraft is pro-duced at their Innovation and Training Centre
in Centurion and the fi rst phase of its fl ight demonstrator is currently in production. Based on the success of the aircraft’s performance, it will go into serial production within the next 18 months, paving the way for further indus-trial aviation development within the city.”
Ramokgopa said the Paramount Group was currently in discussion to use Wonderboom Airport as its global manufacturing base for the AHRLAC aircraft. Initially, four aircraft will be produced per month, but this number is expected to increase as production and the factory expands.

The concept of a “green belt” of industries, which will lead to potential private sector in-vestment of R6 billion, has been fi nalised for the far eastern part of the Tshwane metro.
Delivering his state-of-the-city address on Thursday, Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa outlined plans that were expect-ed to eventually link Cullinan, Bronkhorst-spruit and Rayton to the existing Hazeldean area.
“The east capital development concept has been fi nalised and the minimum fi nan-cial requirement of the initial intervention has been determined at R152 million, which will unlock potential private sector invest-ment of approximately R4 billion to R6 billion,” Ramokgopa said in his address delivered at Freedom Park.
He said in line with Tshwane Vision 2055 to create a resource-effi cient and resilient capital city, phase one of the Tshwane food and energy centre in the east of the metro – the Tshwane Agropolitan City – had already
started and the environmental impact assess-ment was already underway.
“The Tshwane Agropolitan City will con-tribute towards renewable energy generation through solar and biogas plants, urban food production, small, medium and micro enter-prise development, employment creation and social cohesion.”
In addition, the mayor said, this impor -tant project would contribute towards restor-ing the dignity of displaced farmers in the Bronkhorstspruit and Cullinan areas and would serve to re-ignite interest in agricul-ture and agro-processing into the future.
On the east capital project, Ramokgopa said the metro had also completed a practical implementation framework detailing work-streams, funding options, possible fi nanc-ing mechanisms and an action agenda that will enable the municipality to take the east capital forward.
“We are currently packaging catalytic interventions required to fast-track the development and realise the requisite levels of economic growth and development within
The east capital development concept’s minimum initial fi nancial requirement has been determined at R152 million, which will unlock potential private sector investment of approximately R4 billion to R6 billion. ‘‘
the far east of Tshwane,” he said. The metro had to date secured a service
provider to package projects with respect to:
- Industrial development, focusing on green industries;
- Agriculture and agro-processing;- Green property development;- Infrastructure and- Tourism, leisure and aqua development.Ramokgopa’s two-and-a-half-hour ad-
dress focused on the remaking in the city through radical economic transformation and spatial justice.
“The remaking of the capital city is about intervening decisively in the trans-formation of human settlements, the space economy as well as the creation of func-tioning nodes,” he said.
Tshwane was the fourth-largest munici-pal economy in the country and as meas-ured by gross domestic product, contrib-uted 10.1% to the national gross domestic product.
In 2001, Tshwane’s unemployment rate
was over 30% and today, it was 21%, while youth unemployment also came down by 10% to 30%.
“Our city claims the highest percentage of adults with a tertiary education – 23,4% compared to 16,6% in Cape Town and 19,2% in Johannesburg,” Ramokgopa said.
Turning to sport and recreation, the mayor referred to the Tshwane Open Golf Tournament, recently held at the Pretoria Country Club in Waterkloof.
He hailed the event as one of the great successes achieved by the metro.
“The Tshwane Open was mooted to showcase the city as a tourism destination of choice,” he said.
The event had had a total economic im-pact of about R54,4 million for Pretoria and R98,4 million for South Africa as a whole.
He said the municipality had decided to host the tournament for another three years as this would go a long way, not only in positioning Pretoria as a capital city of excellence, but also in building and uniting the people of the city.
The Tshwane Fresh Produce Market is of-fi cially the second largest of its kind in the country, with a projected turnover of more than R2,6 billion for the 2014/2015 fi nancial year.
The market achieved a surplus of R71,6 million in the last fi nancial year – follow-ing growth of 13,3% in comparison with 2012/13.
According to Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, the market implements a major sustainability programme that seeks to ensure it at least retains its market share by 2025, thereby implying that turnover would need to increase to R30 billion with a required infrastructure investment of R450 million.
In his state-of-the-city address, Ramok-gopa said the market would introduce value-added market services and facilities such as online marketing and satellite retail outlets responding to the vast size of the Tshwane region.
“It must also be noted that the market is in the process of developing a new trading system that will be wholly owned and man-aged by the municipality, thereby enabling the market to compete and deal with the supply chain logistics of product procure-ment, distribution as well as overall business processes re-engineering and optimisation,” he said.
The mayor said this was a strategic intervention that would propel and give the market a competitive edge over other role players in the industry.
According to the most recent economic data, the Tshwane metro achieved one of the highest GDP growth rates among met-ro-
politan municipalities in South Africa, thereby maintaining its position as the fast-est growing city in the country since 2001.
“However, the challenge ahead remains signifi cant, with economic growth having slowed considerably during recent times – 2,7% per year since 2009 as opposed to 6,4%, on average, between 2005 and 2009 – and unacceptably high unemployment levels remain.
“We are confi dent that we can address these challenges successfully to ensure that Tshwane is not only among the best in South Africa, but also comparable to its international peers,” Ramokgopa said.
He said that one of the 21st century les-sons of best practice in pursuit of economic growth was that growth was better achieved when implementing targeted interven-tions to support sectors in which cities had a strong comparative advantage. For this reason, Tshwane has selected four sectors on which to focus its efforts – education and the knowledge economy, agriculture and agro-processing, business and diplomatic tourism and the green economy.
The mayor said for each of the sectors, the metro would have a renewed focus sus-tained by an implementation plan that was currently being developed in consultation with key stakeholders.
“The implementation plan will detail short-, medium- and long-term interventions that we will need to undertake to change the current landscape of our economy for the benefi t of all Tshwane residents.
“We will continue to support our remain-ing traditional sectors, such as the automo-tive, mining, retail, fi nance and support ser-
vices sectors, which already have strong plans and strate-
gies and are core assets of our
economy,” Ramok-
gopa said.

Optimus Prime, the main character in the movie , would have applauded these ‘young humans’ for creating the next generation of robots. Although his almost namesake Optimus Primatus cannot speak or transform into a life-sized humanoid, he can do a variety of tasks, like pick up golf balls and deposit them into rolling goals.
The senior pupils of Southdowns College in Centurion participated in the First Tech Challenge (FTC) Championship, which was hosted alongside the Africa Automation Fair (AAF) at the Coca-Cola Dome on 8 May. The AAF accommodat-ed robotics teams from 80 countries world-wide, attracting huge local and international interest. It showcased the amazing world of automation and robotics among the youth, future engineers and innovators.
The college robotics team managed to get a place in the fi nal, but their ‘arch-enemies’, Waterkloof High School and the Deutsche
Schule (both in the east of Pretoria), kicked robotic dirt in their eyes and they did not take home fi rst prize. However, the judges awarded them with the Open Africa Connect award for promoting robotics in the broader community.
Even without the win, it is still a huge achievement for the team, considering most of them are only in grade 9. “In order to participate in the FTC championships, teams built their robots from scratch. They then
programmed them to complete a variety of tasks, such as pick-ing up golf balls and depositing them into rolling goals,” said their teacher, Celeste van Niekerk.
Van Niekerk said they received the chal-
lenge brief just a month before the competi-tion. “They did not know what to expect, and spent a lot of time and effort in building their robot. It cost about R25 000.”
The team consists of nine learners, who had to design and build a four-wheel-drive robot with an infrared sensor and an ultra-sound sensor for calculating distance and

Jason van der Byl, a young robotic geni-us, said: “Most of us want to study engineer-ing after school.” He has big ambitions –Van der Byl wants to design the fi rst domestic robot (yes, the kind of robot you fi nd in
futuristic movies) to roam South Africa.Van Niekerk said Southdowns College
was one of only a handful of schools that gave robotics as a subject. “The robotics pupils learn how to work as a team and how to communicate and promote their designs,” she added.
The next robotic competition is in Sep-tember.

Irene Village Mall treated a customer and nine of her friends to an incredible night of wining and dining under the stars last Thursday.
The mall’s piazza was transformed into a glamorous dining hall, with trees decorated in bright lights and décor, and the centre piece of the large dining table beautifully decorated to provide a snug spot for the din-ers, away from the chilly autumn night.
The evening was made all the better with beautiful music by accordionist Claudio Alho.
According to Irene Village Mall’s market-ing director Leanne Nell, the night was part of a competition.
“To stand in line to win this prize, which was valued at R50 000, shoppers had to spend a certain amount at any one of the stores in the mall, and simply drop their till slip into a box. The night was a way to say ‘thank you’ to one lucky customer.”
The lucky winner, Natalie Gair, invited nine of her close friends and colleagues to join her, and said she was thrilled to have won.
“When I got the call to say that I had won, I had to ask ‘Are you sure?’ several times. I am so glad that I won such a beauti-
ful prize,” said Gair, smiling. The impressive night was complimented
by an extraordinary dinner prepared by the equally extraordinary Seline van der Wat, top 3 fi nalist in the 2013 edition of Mas-terChef SA.
Van der Wat, who has been cooking since a young age with her sisters, said the even-ing was a wonderful chance to cook what-ever she liked, as the guests left the food up to her.
“Being on MasterChef really prepares you well for situations like these, where you are cooking outside and not in a traditional kitchen. I love cooking at pop-up events like these.”
Van der Wat, who is releasing her fi rst cookbook together with her sister Leandri in September, and fi nished as runner-up in the 2013 MasterChef competition, prepared a fi ve-course feast for the 10 guests, taking the time to explain each dish before it was served.
She was accompanied in the kitchen by her fi ancée Jaco Pieterse, and her younger sister Nelia. Jaco’s brother Omri was the maître d’, ensuring that guests were happy and food was served promptly.
After dinner, the guests and the hosts spent the rest of the night chatting, happy to have shared a wonderful meal together.

Die première was by NuMetro in Menlyn gehou.
kaar so seer nie.
Ds. Els sê: “Ons bly in so ’n pragtige land. Ek hoop die rolprent sal mense versoen.”

With a large percentage of homebuyers purchasing their fi rst property, it stands to reason that at some stage in the future these fi rst-time buyers will become fi rst-time sell-ers. As with purchasing a property, selling a home also requires homework and research on the owner’s part.
“An experienced real estate professional will be able to provide the homeowner with useful tips and information regarding what buyers can expect in that particular market and what the selling points of the home are,” says Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa.
It is also important select a reputable, ex-perienced real estate agent who will be able to provide sound guidance and advice about improving the home’s presentation to ensure its appeal for the highest possible number of potential buyers.
“With such advice sellers will be able to position themselves ahead of the game and be fully prepared to place their home on the market.”
According to Goslett there are a number of steps every homeowner should follow to ensure a head start in preparing the sale:
The exterior of the property is the fi rst area of the home that anyone will see, so make it welcoming to buyers.
“You want buyers to be enticed to see more. So clear debris and clutter from the entrance of the property and the front gar-den. Mow the lawn and cut back any hedges and bushes. Paint the front door, garage door and the gate to give the home a new fresh, clean look.
“Planting colourful annuals and perenni-als is a great way to attract attention to the property from the road and potential buyers walking or driving past,” says Goslett.
He stresses the importance for the home to have a well-maintained appearance by getting to the small repairs that need fi xing,
such as cracked or broken roof tiles or out-side lighting.
All exterior defects could instantly lead to a bad overall fi rst impression.
Nothing implies that a home is well taken care of as much as clean-liness.
A clean home will score points with buy-ers as they scrutinise every room – espe-cially the kitchen and bathrooms.
Goslett says a new coat of paint will give dirt-prone areas a clean fresh look.
If the home has carpets he advises having them cleaned to make the home look and
smell great. Before the home goes on show, it is important to tidy up each room, includ-ing inside cupboards and the garage.
Hide unsightly everyday items like chil-dren’s toys and the pet’s belongings.
These items also include litter boxes, animal crates, pet dishes, dirty laundry and dirty kitchen sponges.
Pack away unused items – start pack-ing unused items into boxes and have them stored away – this goes for furniture as well. If items are not used daily they can be packed away to declutter the home so that it appears bigger, and to give the seller a head-start on their move.
A well-done, no-frills paint job is the best choice.
“Everyone’s taste differs so it is best to stick to a neutral palette of white and beige so that potential buyers are not put off by any unconventional colours.
“There is a good chance the new buyer will repaint and decorate the home as soon as they move in anyway,” says Goslett:
fi Apart from mak-ing the necessary repairs around the home, updating readily visible fi xtures such as cupboard and door handles, towel racks and curtain rods will completely overhaul the look of the home. These subtle and rather inexpensive changes can make a big impact.

Mastering the art of property investment could fi nancially be very rewarding.
However, says Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, entering into the world of property investment can be intimidating, not to men-tion risky.
“In every phase of the property market there are opportunities available to investors, provided they are well-versed and undertake the necessary research,” he says.
“Without putting in the time and effort it requires, property investors could fi nd them-selves making the wrong and sometimes very costly decisions.
“Seasoned and successful property inves-tors could only reach their full potential by having a vast understanding of the property market and the factors that infl uence it.”
Knowing what to look for and what to avoid will increases an investor’s chances of success and will ultimately impact on their investment returns.
Goslett gives some property investment principles to help guide investors to making the correct decision:
There is no need to rush into any investment.
“Rather take the time to do the appropri-ate research, than rush into a deal that could cost you as the investor a lot of money in
the long-term. When it comes to property investment there is no blissful ignorance – knowledge is the key to success.
The more knowledge and information an investor has, the better equipped they will be to recognise a good opportunity.
There is no need for investors to take the fi rst deal coming their way.
They can take their time, shop around and compare other properties that are available before making any fi nal decisions.
Investors would do well to look at the price of the property and compare this to the value. This could easily be achieved through working with an estate agent and asking them to provide a comparative market ana-lysis.
Most people know this mantra, and there is good reason for it. Location really is just about every-thing when it comes to the investment poten-tial of any property.
“Regardless of the property’s condition or type, its location will be the determining
factor as to how much the home’s value will appreciate.
It is imperative for an investor to choose the right location over any other factors.
Good options are areas in proximity to a good range of amenities. Areas consistently showing steady growth in value are those near business nodes, transport routes, good schools and shopping centres.
While the law protects property buyers to some degree, it is never a good idea to assume that everything in the property checks out just by looking at it.
Investors should have any property professionally inspected before the purchase agreement is signed.
“A professional inspector will be able to spot any defects that may otherwise go unnoticed, such as the structural integrity of the property.
“While it may cost money to hire an inspector, knowing about any costly defects that the property has may infl uence the pur-chasing decision and price,” says Goslett.

Three major trends are converging to make large stands in established resi-dential areas some of the best property investments available.
That is the word from Richard Gray, CEO of Harcourts Real Estate, who said the fi rst of these trends is the strong movement towards the better use of land and existing resources for environmental reasons, which was resulting in the densifi cation of cities
everywhere.“In older cities such as London or
New York, it is already very rare for anyone except the super-rich to have a garden of 1 000sqm or 2 000sqm, and infi ll and brownfi elds developments are familiar concepts.
“In SA, of course, large gardens are still common in many traditional suburbs, but we are now rapidly catching up with the drive for densi-fi cation and sustainable development as urbanisation accelerates, and most new developments offer much smaller stands,” he said.
As lifestyles change and the costs of maintaining a large property con-tinue to mount, many property owners and investors in the heritage suburbs
are seeing the benefi ts of sub-dividing and redeveloping their large stands to accom-modate three or four homes.
This change dovetails neatly with the second trend, which was the rapidly rising demand among homebuyers in the wealthy baby-boom generation for smaller homes and gardens that are nevertheless still luxu-rious and located in the upmarket suburbs.
“Quite simply, baby-boomers who are used to large homes on expansive grounds are often quite willing to downsize but generally not at all willing to compromise on their quality of life, or on potential value growth, in the search for more com-pact, more manageable properties.”
Gray says they still want luxury proper-ties in an affl uent, well-established area, which means investors and developers stand to make excellent returns on the purchase of large properties in areas that can be subdivided and redeveloped as ex-clusive cluster villages or boutique estates with excellent security provisions.
There is also great scope for the re-development of land in less affl uent and even run-down areas close to city centres or with the potential to become live-work-and-play precincts, thanks to the third major trend, which is the preference of “millennial” homebuyers of properties within walking distance of everything.
“These buyers – generally in their late 20s or early 30s – share an aversion to traf-fi c and long commutes, and they constitute a huge and growing market for apartments and small houses in mixed-use areas where they can easily walk to work, to shops and restaurants, to the gym and the theatre.
“We are already seeing some great examples of urban renewal in our city centres in SA as developers move to meet the demand from millennials by revamping old offi ce blocks and industrial buildings, but we believe there is also much room for ‘new buildings on old sites’ in inner suburbs that are also already well-supplied with infrastructure and services.”
Quite simply, baby-boomers who are used to large homes on expansive grounds are often quite willing to down-size.

TERMS & CONDITIONSCONDITIONS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF ADVERTISING: Rekord reserves the right to withhold or cancel any advertisement order accepted. NB: Rekord accepts responsibility for only one faulty insertion. Advertisers are advised to check their advertisements for possible errors on the fi rst day of publica-tion. NO free insertion will be given on the grounds of small typographical errors that do not derogate from the advertisement. NB: Cancellation of a placement order must meet the following conditions to be eff ective: • The cancellation must be in writing • It must reach the Advertising offi ce of Capital Media at least 3 (three) days prior to the printing date • A cancellation number must be obtained from Capital Media • Any telephonic correspon-dence must be confi rmed in writing to be valid • Capital Media may cancel an advertising agreement if the advertiser fails to pay his/her account within the agreed time.
Capital Media (Pty) Ltd renders a service to our clients to advertise their pro-ducts and services. However, we cannot be held accountable for any mislea-ding claims or damages that result from the use of said advertised products and services.
Readers should therefore be cautious in responding to any advertisements, in particular fi nancial and business related opportunities, unless a thorough investigation has been conducted into the business practices of the advertiser concerned.
Rekord experiences many problems with clients requesting us to comply within any possible way, to give preference to their advertisements versus that of other clients. This leads to advertisements starting with A1, Atten-tion, or 000. It makes no sense to the reader and prevents them from making logical conclustions as to what the content of the advertisements is about. It spoils the presentation of our classifi ed advertisements and also confuses the reader, who wants to see at a glance what an advertisement is about and make a decision regarding his needs. We believe that our capable repre-sentatives can help with good advice in presenting your advertisement with original and fresh ideas.

One of Pretoria’s leading athletic admini-strators and former Comrades Marathon champion Nick Bester recently received a Chancellor’s medal award from the North-West University Mafi keng Campus.
The award was handed to him at the recent autumn graduation ceremony on the campus.
The Chancellor’s medal is awarded to individuals who have shown exceptional achievement of a non-academic nature, and/or exceptional contribution in any sphere of life that is compatible with the vision and mission of the university.
Having contributed extensively to the development of sports in the country both
as sportsman and administrator, Bester will join a long illustrious list of people bestowed this prestigious honour over the years.
His exceptional career includes many years of achievement as an athlete. He has won more than 500 gold medals, 300 silver medals and 50 bronze medals in road
running, triathlons, canoeing, duathlons, cycling, mountain biking and swimming.
Due to his diversity in sport and raw talent, he can be recognised as the most ver-satile and colourful athlete in South Africa today.
With all these accomplishments under his belt, Bester also boasts a Guinness World Record, obtained when he was part of a relay team of 10 runners who completed a distance of 1 000 miles in a time of 93 hours.
Bester is nowadays the manager of the Nedbank running club who is in charge of the careers of some of the country’s best road athletes.

Emile Erasmus in volle vaart.

Former African road race champion Tes-fom Okubamariam held his nerve and his line to sprint to victory in the inaugural 100km Bestmed Capital Classic, presented by ASG, in Pretoria on Sunday.
The Eritrean’s win in the fi rst road race of the new Bestmed National Cycling Se-ries puts him at the top of the standings.
Okubamariam, riding in the colours of the MTN-Qhubeka feeder team, crossed the line in 2:17:24 ahead of Pieter Seyffert (Altech Autopage-Karan Beef) and Dennis van Niekerk (Bonitas) at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Europcar SA’s Willie Smit and Oku-bamariam’s teammate Nicholas Dlamini, who were also part of the decisive fi ve-rider charge, were disqualifi ed after taking the wrong lane and ending up parallel to the fi nishing chute.
Okubamariam said he was happy to fi nish the fi rst half of his season on a high. The 24-year-old will return to his home country next week to compete in his na-tional road championships.
More than 2 200 cyclists turned out for the debut race, which covered an out-and-back route along the N14 towards Kru-gersdorp.
In the women’s race, an on-form An-Li Kachelhoffer of Team Activate went on a solo breakaway in the last 30km to secure an uncontested win in 2:45:28.
Her teammates Heidi Dalton and Ly-nette Burger controlled the racing behind her to take second and third respectively in 2:45:49. Kachelhoffer, 27, said she had been feeling strong at the start of the race, as her preparations for the European rac-
ing season had been going well.Former Pretoria resident Kachelhoffer,
who recently relocated to George, said she had driven the route many times and was
pleasantly surprised by what a great cycle course it was.
