SYDNEY - THE EMERALD CITY

Sydney, with its tall skyscrapers, busy traffic streets, road signs, impressive shopwindows, its vast urban sprawl and palm trees, resembles Los Angeles a lot. Yet,despite its American veil, its inhabitants are closer to the English in terms of character, obviously owing to historical reasons. But much of the Englishness is now changing, starting with the artistic exodus from Melbourne to Sydney. Some say that “Sydney isNew York without the intellect.” People are mostly concerned about what’s in andwhat’s out, in terms of the social scene. Melbourne, its rival city, is a much moreclass-conscious city, where kids are sent to good schools and people still gather inclubs.

A

However, there’s also a bright side to Sydney’s lifestyle. It has become highlycosmopolitan. With a population of over three and a half million (the largest amongAustralian cities), you can also eat in a wide variety of ethnic restaurants, includingAboriginal ones.

B

Furthermore, in recent years Sydney is being transformed into a centre for the arts. Itenjoys California’s climate and is becoming more European in fashion and culture. Formany people it is becoming an emerald city. For good or bad? Decide for yourself.

C

Australia’s a vast country full of amazing natural sights, such as Ayers Rock, thePinnacle Desert near Perth, the Kalgoorlie gold mines and the longest coral reef onEarth, the Great Barrier Reef. But which is the first city that comes to your mind whenyou think of Australia? Naturally, Sydney. It’s the most outstanding city in the whole ofAustralia. In fact, many even mistake it for Australia’s capital (even though that’sCanberra).

D

Sydney’s first characteristic is its breathtakingly beautiful harbour. If you look out, youwon’t miss the imposing Sydney Opera House overlooking the harbour, which isconsidered the city’s symbol. Then, there is Harbour Bridge, the next most importantcity landmark. Not to be forgotten are Sydney’s most beautiful beaches that run forkilometres, kissing the turquoise blue waters of the Tasman Sea. Sydney doesn’t havemany old buildings, but it has taken care of the ones it has, in particular, St. Andrew’sCathedral and the charming campus of Sydney University, founded in 1854.

REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES HELP YOU TEST-DRIVE YOUR DREAM JOB

There is a big difference between thinking you will like a profession and knowingit. But how do you reach that level of certainty? Real-life experiences in a field can be the bestteacher when searching for the right career path.

In some instances, real-life experiences allow students to find out they are barkingup the wrong tree, so they change fields of academic study entirely. Take, for example, studentsstudying to become teachers. Once they start student-teaching, a terrifying realization can takeplace. It’s the trauma of ‘Oh, I really don’t like being in the classroom, then spending all nighton lesson plans!’ It’s horrible to watch and it’s horrible to go through, but it’s certainly avaluable lesson to learn before you get the degree and are out searching for a job. On the otherhand, some students may realize they are on the right career path but discover they want to workat a certain company or in a particular environment. There are many ways to learn these lessons, beyond the traditional semester-long internship. There are several steps any student can take todelve deeper into their dream career.

Research – Learn as much as you can about your dream career and the people andorganizations that are most successful in the field. Find out what values are associated with thatcareer and whether they are in line with your values. What is the lifestyle of the people in thisfield of work like? What is the work like on a day-to-day basis?

Find a mentor – When looking for a mentor, look for a person who has a strongpassion for their work. Amentor is ideally someone with expertise and longevity in the field andhas the ability to teach.

Spend some time – The only way to truly discover if a job is your dream job is tospend some time doing it! Arrange to spend time with your mentor, ask lots of questions and payattention to how you respond to that experience.

Investing time in test-driving a dream job during college allows a student time toset a new course well before graduation comes. By spending the time now, it increases thechances that the first job out of college really will be your dream job!

4 Carefully read the text below and then do the exercise that follows.

HOW TO COMPLAIN....... AND GET RESULTS!

No matter how careful a shopper you are, at some point you won’t get the service orproduct you paid for. That’s the time to complain! No one likes a whinger, and most peopledon’t enjoy conflict, but complaining is appropriate in some situations. When making acomplaint, getting something off your chest is not your goal. Your goal is to solve a problem.A few tips can make the complaint process more effective.

1. First of all, you should be clear as to why you are dissatisfied. Was it the way you weretreated? A wrong decision? Defective goods? What exactly went wrong? What do you see asthe flaw in the item you have bought, and then how do you want this to be resolved after youcomplain. Consider the way you are going to complain. It’s hard to ignore a complaint that ispresented in person. So, take the product you have purchased back to the shop, or attempt tohave the service done over. Be friendly. Smile. Don’t be shy to use a bit of humor. Be likable, but expect action.

2. Do not speak angrily to an employee. There is no point in losing your temper. Thinkfor a moment before you complain. Don’t let the emotion of the moment get to you. Are you ina bad mood about something else? Is the problem the employee’s fault?

A. PUT IT ON PAPER

C. GO UP THE LADDER

B. TAKE A DEEP BREATH

D. SAY HOWYOU CAN BE REACHED

E. IF POSSIBLE, COMPLAIN FACE-TO-FACE

F. KNOW THE RULES

H. STICK TO THE FACTS

G. GET RESULTS

3. Are you dealing with the right person? Does he or she have the authority to act onyour complaint? Don’t give up! Ask to see the manager or someone from the customerservice department. It may be necessary to communicate with them several times beforetaking the next step.

4. Be ready with the details of your complaint. Retain all receipts/invoices, letters ande-mails regarding products and services that you may have purchased/received. These includethe time of sale or service, the names of people and products involved, and the specificproblem you encountered. If you are asked to present these at any stage then present copiesand keep the originals yourself.

5. The company might have a complaint procedure, so follow it. Meanwhile, make anattempt to find out your rights. This may take patience and persistence, but it will help solveyour problem. Don’t be put off. If you don’t get anywhere the first time you complain, tryagain.

5 Read about three people talking about keeping fit and answer the questions.

Tim

Tim has been doing a paper round since he was twelve. ‘I needed some extra pocketmoney so I thought that would be the best way of getting some. It’s not easy, though, gettingup in the cold, dark winter mornings and delivering papers in the pouring rain!’Tim has to cycleabout ten kilometres every morning before he goes to school so he gets a lot of exercise thatway. ‘I found it was tough on my legs at first but after a while they got used to it. Sometimes Irace against the other kids who are doing a paper round to see who’s going to finish first!’ Timwill be sixteen next year and he’s decided to take a part-time job in a music shop instead of hispaper round. ‘Obviously, that’s not going to keep me fit so I’m going to have to think ofsomething else to do. Maybe I’ll go jogging with my dad!’

Maggie

Maggie thought she didn’t need to get fit until she went to an aerobics and jazz dancedisplay at her local sports centre. ‘I was really impressed by the way all those girls moved sofast and I really liked the funky music.’ That was enough to make her try and find someaerobic classes near where she lived. ‘I made some enquiries at the local library and found outthat there were aerobic classes twice a week at a nearby town and jazz dance classes everySaturday as well. I signed up immediately!’Maggie is lucky in that her mum can take her to theclasses in the week and she catches the bus on Saturdays for the dance classes, so travellingisn’t too expensive. She’s even discovered that she’s got a hidden talent for jazz dance!‘Fortunately, I’ve always been fairly flexible so I’m able to do the dance steps pretty well. I’malso lucky in that I’ve got an amazing dance partner in my cousin Sam!’

Adam

Adam is swimming champion of his school and a member of the junior national team.‘My way of keeping fit is through swimming. I’ve never liked any other sport. My parents werekeen for me to take up tennis but I just wasn’t interested.’ He could swim the length of theswimming pool by the age of seven, which is quite unusual for a child of that age. Since then,Adam’s become a top swimmer and he travels around the country going to swimming galas andcompetitions.‘I train five times a week and I watch my diet carefully,’ he says. ‘If you are fit,you find everything in life easier: running for buses, helping with the heavy shopping, and evenconcentrating on your schoolwork. Fitness has to do with both the mind and the body!
