Accelerated Construction Estimate: $7.9M.

– One weekend closure per bridge plus phased approach slab work and

deck grinding.

Traditional Construction Estimate: $11.8M.

– Four months per bridge.

That’s not the norm on cost. Typically ABC will cost significantly more in

terms of dollars but far less for user costs and impacts.

Accelerated Bridge Construction Considerations

Engage prime contractors and fabricators early and often.

Remain open to alternate concepts.

Ensure that concept is feasible, but do not design in any more methodology

than needed.

Just because a concept has worked well in other areas of the country does

not necessarily mean we can jump right in.

– Lightweight concrete.

– Ultra-high performance concrete.

– Fabrication: plant vs. jobsite, combining steel and concrete elements.

Consider user costs and impact when weighing accelerated vs. traditional

construction methods.

Extended phased construction and traffic control can equal significant cost.
