What did I expect when

I started my career in 1988. From 1988 to 1994, I expected that

• Computer education would spread in all colleges and universities

• The usage of computers would become a necessity in all industries

• Data processing would be the major area in IT

• Computer literacy would provide job opportunities

• Computer graphics would be confined to a handful of application areas

(such as image processing, medical diagnostics, engineering design, GIS

etc.)

• Artificial Intelligence would be the winning field of research and

applications

17

What didn’t I expect?

• The Y2K problem (was not known until ‘94)

• The growth of service industry and international footprint of India in IT

• Internet and e-Commerce

• Touch screen, mobile technology, tablets

• Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP)

• Digital photography, multimedia

, and many more!

18

Aren’t you curious?

19

How can we take a shot at the future?

20

First, we need to be aware of the present!

21

How do you manage yourself?

22

How do you make the right choices?

23

How can you weather the storm and adapt?

24

And manage when the visibility is low?

25

How can you conquer unknown territories?

26

How can you realize your potential?

27

How can you manage conflicts?

28

And how do you decide the next steps?

29

How do you introspect and improve?

30

And how can you co-exist?

31

Let us look at the

challenges in travel

industry!

32

Part-3: Two dimensions: Platform and Purpose

33

What is your platform?

34

What is your purpose?

“Your platform is truly a critical part of your existence. But there is

something beyond it as well.

It is your purpose.

As we start our life and, sometimes, well into it, many of us get so

preoccupied with building the platform, that we forget that it is not

what makes us complete. A platform, as the meaning of the word

suggests, is just a springboard. It is a surface on which you stand to

go someplace. Your platform, like a railway platform, is a place from

where you need to go someplace. That someplace will be determined

by your purpose.

Your platform is not your purpose”.

- Subroto Bagchi

35

What are you passionate about?

37

What are the challenges

of IT managers?

Let us watch this!

38

Part 4: Challenges in our industry

Technology Evolution

Global Competition

Economic Factors

Social and Political Factors

Skills ,and Competencies

39

These challenges have created opportunities too!

Those who are aware of the present possess the ability to

understand challenges, do their best to manage those challenges,

and visualize unforeseen opportunities!

Their equanimity helps them consume news updates coming from

different sources and directions, with no signs of anxiety.

They are focused.

40

Start with a purpose!

41

Aim high!

42

Think and remember!

If you have a job where someone

tells you what to do next, you've

just given up the chance to create

value.

- Seth Godin
