There are NO standards.

• “Like a Virgin” is the #1 single

• Earning a high school diploma is contingent on years of coursework in a given content area

• Actual content of those courses varies school by school, state by state. 1984

8

That’s bad.

That means a 3rd grade student in San Francisco might be learning completely different content

than a 3rd grade student in New York. Or Los Angeles for that matter.

Or even a student on the other side of town still in San Francisco.

Then a major shakeup takes place in 1989.

Then a major shakeup takes place in 1989.

• An earthquake rocks San Francisco as the World Series starts

• George Bush Sr. convenes all 50 state governors for a national education conference

• They adopt a goal of creating ‘content standards’ for core grades/subjects

1989

13

The aim of this big conference was to make

sure kids in the same grade or course were

learning the same thing.

Crisis for the State of Standards in 1998!

1998

• “Armageddon” is the #1 movie

• Almost all 50 states have content standards for math and English Language Arts (ELA)

• Unfortunately, the number, rigor, and quality of these standards varies greatly by state

18

That’s still bad.

That means a 3rd grade student in San Francisco might still be learning completely different content

than a 3rd grade student in New York.

But at least maybe they’re learning similar content to a 3rd grade student in Los Angeles? Or are they?

A Decade of Cool Glasses Provided a New View.

2006

• Discussion begins around creating common, core standards for the nation

• Emphasis is on aligning the standards to demands of post-secondary education & careers

• There’s talk of creating a national assessment that students will take even if they’re in different states

Standards continue to evolve around the country.

We’ve got lots of different sets of standards.

Standards Are Meant To Be Your Guide.

But how do you know if a set of standards

meets high standards?

STANDARDS NEED TO BE IN APPROPRIATELY

SIZED CHUNKS. THEY AREN’T OBJECTIVES, AND THEY AREN’T

TOPICS.

Topics > Standards > Objectives

A STRONG SET OF STANDARDS HAS

SUFFICIENT BREADTH AND DEPTH.

THEY SPAN A FULL YEAR’S WORTH OF CONTENT

AND REQUIRE STUDENTS TO GO IN-DEPTH WITH

THAT MATERIAL

A STRONG SET OF STANDARDS GIVES CLEAR GUIDANCE ABOUT WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO

KNOW, UNDERSTAND, AND/OR BE ABLE TO DO,

BUT DOESN’T PRESCRIBE HOW THE CONTENT SHOULD BE TAUGHT ON A DAILY BASIS.

THEY PROVIDE THE FOUNDATION ON WHICH A

STRONG SET OF ASSESSMENTS CAN BE WRITTEN TO

MEASURE LEARNING OF THOSE STANDARDS.

So what do you do with a strong set of

standards?

Long-Term Planning is Key

Some Standards Take Longer Than Others To Teach.

Strong Lesson Planning and Delivery is Also Key
