Everlasting Arms By Christie Gravely

I walked up the driveway to go into the house and visit with the family to plan the memorial service

for one of our church members. The cars that lined the street and driveway meant that love had parked

itself at this home and wasn’t leaving anytime soon. Sometimes love looks like a casserole or a good friend

that dropped everything and showed up on your front doorstep. I met another friend on the way in the

house and she summed it all up as succinctly as possible. With a tear in her eye and a nod toward the line of

cars she simply said, “They are carrying us.” That is the way it is in Christ’s church at Easley Presbyterian.

Sometimes you are the one doing the carrying. You are the one with the casserole in hand, the

word of prayer to offer, the extra room to share. There is no precise definition of what love will look like until

the moment comes and tells you what is needed. And the truth is that you are usually feeling somewhat

helpless and ill-equipped because, in point of fact, there is nothing you can “do” to change what has

suddenly made life so tragic. But you show up with a loaf of bread and a tear of love running down your

cheek and a hard hug, and all of a sudden you are part of God’s gracious arms that are lifting a broken heart.

Sometimes you are the one doing the carrying and you may never know exactly how much your act of

Christian compassion has meant to another one of God’s children.

Sometimes you are the one being carried. Yours are the walls that have caved in on every side and

whose sky has fallen. And if you can feel anything at all, you feel awkward because you are more

accustomed to and comfortable with being the one who offers help—not the one who receives it. And the

doorbell rings, a knock comes, and love has stopped in to coordinate the kitchen, and another knock and

someone else has started answering the phone for you, and another knock and there stands a face you

didn’t know how good it would feel to see. And you are being carried along in the arms of Christian love and

in the heart of Christian prayer. And the best thing you can do is let them carry you a while.

Deuteronomy 33:27 reads: “The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the

everlasting arms.” Those Arms and that Eternal Presence can carry you through the valley of the shadow…

and the only way through that valley is to go through it. No one gets to go around. But—no one has to go

alone. And if it seems too deep, if you stumble and fall to your knees in regret or grief or pain…then you will

notice a love stronger than death reaching down to lift you up. Strong, strong, arms. Everlasting arms. But

don’t be surprised, however, if at first they put down the casserole dish they carried in through your front

door.

On May 3, 2015 Easley Presbyterian Church will welcome 15 new confirmands into the

membership of the church. The confirmands will answer the questions for membership and

affirm their faith in front of the congregation. This affirmation of faith will be the culmination

of 28 weeks of study on the basics of the Christian faith. Confirmation classes take place

during the Sunday school hour and address topics such as salvation, the Trinity, and the

person of Christ. Each confirmand has a mentor who has helped them craft a personal faith

statement. These statements were

read to the Session on the evening

of April 19.

The names of the confirmands are

as follows:

Noah Brock, Rosie Edwards,

Matthew Elgin, Bridger Gantt, Ali

Latham, Hunter Lewis, Rett Lister,

Joey Mathvink, Matt Nunnery, Ben

Prins, Olivia Roach, Gwyneth

Waddington, Luke Weisner,

Matthew Whittemore, and Thomas

Whittemore.

Please feel free to congratulate these confirmands on a job well done!

A First Grade Milestone: Worship Education

Did you know that Gloria Patri means “glory to the Father” in Latin? Did you know that Dr. Boggess chimes the bells 11 times at the beginning of 11:00 worship to signify the hour and to get us ready to worship? Did you know that everyone who is able should stand when you see a * in the bulletin? Did you know that each week we are given a chance to tell God we are sorry for all the things we have done that we wish we had not? And did you know that we are given the good news each week that we are forgiven? Did you know that Jesus gave his disciples the words of the Lord’s Prayer, and we still say it each week in worship?

I am sure you do know most of these important facts, and I know ten first graders who know them as well! Over the past ten weeks, our first graders have been walking through the bulletin each Sunday, using it as a road map to worship. We have learned all of the above and much more.

On March 22, ten new worshippers joined our congregation with a fuller knowledge and appreciation of the what, why and how of worship. If you find yourself sitting near one, encourage them and welcome them as they embark on this spiritual milestone.

“True worship brings us, no matter what our age, to experience with God.” Delia Halverson

Tips for worshipping with children:

Worship is active –help children stand, sit, read and sing at the appropriate times

Sit near the front of the Sanctuary to help children see and focus on what is going on

Encourage children to help by looking up hymns and marking them for the service

Point out different elements of worship (instruments, baptism, communion)

Give an assignment during (Ex: circle the Lord’s Prayer in the bulletin, underline all the hymns in the bulletin) This will help keep children engaged.

For younger children, practice whispering at home. Whispering doesn’t always come naturally!

Ask children to listen for certain things during the worship service, and ask them to report on the way home (Can you remember an announcement that was made? Can you remember something said in the prayer of the people?)

Journey to Nazareth By Stacy Sanders

Our first real encounter with Easley Presbyterian Church was through Vacation Bible

School in 2013. We were at a smaller Presbyterian Church and were invited to come

visit from a friend of one of our daughters. It was amazing the number of children

and families involved with VBS at EPC. We quickly began visiting, and joined the

church that fall. Last year I worked as a Tribe Leader for one of the Preschool groups

and really enjoyed seeing how, even at a very young age, the children learn the

scripture verses and songs! We had a lot of fun "Escaping to the Wilderness" with

Moses! This year I am excited to be directing the Preschool portion of VBS! From

meeting the wonderful volunteers from the Methodist Church to recruiting Tribe

Leaders for this year’s program, it is so much fun to see all the planning that goes

into this wonderful week. We had a great time last year partnering with the

Methodist Church, combining talents and resources to make VBS even better. Of

course, we are even more excited to bring it "home" and be the hosting church this

year as we go to Nazareth and learn about Jesus as a child. If you have not been

involved with VBS in the past, this is the year to come out and join us!

Register today at www.easleypresbyterian.org – look on the front page!

It Takes a Village! Many hands and talents are needed to help our Nazareth village come to life! There are many ways to volunteer from kitchen crew, to tribe leader (leading children from place to place), to music room, Bible storytelling by playing the role of Mary, to recreation, or Marketplace shopkeeper (many hands on activities here!). If you love children, love to dress up in Bible times attire, or love to meet new people while spreading the message of Jesus –then VBS is the place for you! Register to volunteer today at www.easleypresbyterian.org Donations needed: tailgate pop-up style tents, artificial plants/trees

The Dream Center would like to invite you to an event on May 12 to discuss the state of

Foster Care in Pickens County. You can read their invitation below and can register for this

event at dreamcenterpc.org:

Fostering Hope. . . A Challenge to Christians to Alleviate the Foster Care Crisis

Many people have a lot of questions and fear when it comes to fostering. The

Dream Center is hosting this event to inform and challenge Christians to alleviate

the foster care crisis. There are over 100 children in regular foster care in Pickens

County alone. With only 40 foster families, our foster care system is in crisis. The

Dream Center is challenging all Christians in Pickens and surrounding counties to

attend this event. Not everyone is called to become a foster parent, but each of us

can do something. Many opportunities exist to help with this crisis, from

volunteering your time, becoming a mentor, to praying. At the least, you will come

away from this event better informed and prepared to pray for the needs of

hurting children all over this county. Our goal is to have 500 people attend this

event.

The Girls Circle and Boys Council program at MARY’S House are looking for program

facilitators. This program is a mentoring program that operates within the middle and high

schools of Pickens County. Men and women who have a passion for mentoring at risk youth

are encouraged to help out with this initiative. Mentors facilitate a class of 5 or 6 boys or girls

who have shown interest in growing though self-reflection and constructive dialogue. Groups

meet once a week for a 90 minute class period. If you do not feel led to facilitate a group, you

can still help out by donating Hobby Lobby or Walmart gift cards to help the facilitators defer

the cost of planning class periods. If you are interested in this program, please contact Kim

Clevenger at 864.855.1708.

United Christian Ministries is in the need of toilet paper!

FUNdraising By Thomas Clanton

It has been an exciting season for our senior high youth group, or EPCHigh. Our

group will be heading to Belmopan, Belize, this summer to serve alongside a

thriving Belizean congregation. We will spend time helping with construction of a

church building during the day and serving with the “Kids Club” in the evening. In

the process of preparing for our trip we want to give the congregation the

opportunity to partner with us in this preparation. You may have seen some

wonderfully tasteful pink flamingos lounging around the yards of church

members recently. This is just one of the many fundraising

opportunities EPCHigh will be organizing in the coming months. The

youth took time to plan these fundraisers themselves and have

designed the programs and events through their own initiative.

They served the dinner at the March talent show. Also, they will be

selling Dominos discount cards (10 buy one get one free pizzas for $10.

Not too bad if I say so myself), hosting a dodgeball tournament in the

coming months, beautifying the church grounds, and I hear a rumor

there may be a “Kiss the Pig” raffle in the not too distant future. These

events help the youth to begin thinking with a servant leadership

mindset and to raise the funds necessary for the trip.

However, I would like to challenge the adults of the congregation

to think beyond the idea of monetary support. I would like to have

members of the congregation come beside these high school youth

and partner with them through prayer and encouragement. We

are not going to Belize to take a vacation. We are partnering with

fellow Christians from another country to do the faithful work of

Christ. I ask you to come alongside us as well and ask God in prayer

to establish our mission in Belize and that our minds would be set

on Christ. Some practical ways to help would be to write

notes of encouragement or notes of prayer to an individual

student participating in the trip. When you see a high school

students in church, ask them about the trip and let them

know that you are praying for them. We thank you for your

support of our fundraisers and events, and we thank you in

advance for the way you will build up these students in love

through prayer and encouragement.

April 1 No Wonderful Wednesday

The God We Can Know: Exploring the “I AM” Sayings of Jesus led by, Rev. Christie Gravely

and Dr. Bill Seel.

Drawing from the Gospel of John, we will explore four of the “I Am” sayings of Jesus. Jesus defined himself

using ordinary, everyday images that could be understood by ordinary, everyday people. This study will

allow us to translate these ancient images into today’s world, bringing us into closer connection with the

great “I AM.”

April 15 “I Am the Light of the World”

April 22 “I Am the Good Shepherd”

April 29 “I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”

The preschool and elementary children will study Paul’s Conversion during the month of April.

I look forward to Camp Buc every summer. I love it because I get to learn about God in a fun place. I get to be with my church friends. I want to be a counselor when I am older. I like the food and the garden. I like the polar bear swimming. I really love the hiking. I really just love everything about Camp Buc. Ethan Lee

10

It has truly been March Madness at EPCHigh this

month. Our Bible studies this month took a look at

what it means to live in unity with Christ. The first

week in March we saw that God does call us to be

obedient to his word and live according to the moral

parameters he defined. However, we also saw how

this obedience doesn’t come from our own

willpower or personal moral code. Obedience to the

word of God flows out of unity with Christ. Jesus

talks about being the vine and us being the branches.

Jesus provides all the necessary “nutrients” to bear

good fruit. Our Christian life flows from our

connection to Christ, not what we do to earn God’s

attention. The next week the youth were presented

with a chocolate-coated snack. They were told to

nibble at the edges and then take a bite right in the

middle. Unbeknownst to them the chocolate coating

was actually concealing a cotton ball at the core.

Through this illustration the youth learned that

things were not always what they seem. People can

be moral on the outside but it is what’s on the inside

that counts. They learned to let Jesus transform them

from the inside, instead of trying to control their

exterior circumstances with no real change taking

place. The following week a small group of high

school students attended the Presbyterian Youth

Conference in Montreat, NC. Besides enjoying the

beautiful special place that is Montreat, the youth

also learned about how to find peace in Christ

instead of in the world. They continued to learn

about how Presbyterians can show love to the world

and what sacrificial love looks like. For our final

meeting of the month, we helped present the dinner

at the EPC talent show in order to raise money for

our summer mission trip to Belize. Speaking of

fundraisers, you may have noticed some pink friends

putting down roots in some of your neighborhoods.

High schools students sacrificed their time to help

bring these great decorations to the city of Easley to

help raise funds. Thank you for all your support this

month and we can’t wait for the summer to get here!

11

Spring fever was alive and well at EPCMiddle this March. Our Bible studies also focused on a unique Bible

story from 1 Kings 12-13. At our first meeting we filmed a movie

depicting the account of Jeroboam and the man of God. The

story saw how Jeroboam tried to manipulate God and the

religious system he had set in place to retain power and seek

his own gain. We had a discussion on how we should love God

because he is God, and not to receive gifts and benefits. We

also saw how the man of God did not persevere in his faith and

how he was savagely destroyed by a lion. We saw from this

strange story how God wants us to be filled with integrity and

to love him not just when the whole world is watching, but

when we are by ourselves as well. The next week we returned

to this story and talked about how we could trust God not just

in the ways we want to but in the ways he tells us to.

We saw that it may be scary to trust God

and we may not know what he is thinking,

but that he is always working towards our

good and his glory, which are the same

thing! At our next meeting we helped serve

the church by beginning the clean-up

process in the back yard. We also heard

from Steve Cummings about the exciting

opportunities at Camp Buc this summer. At

our final meeting of the month, we met

with our friends at Easley First Baptist

and discussed what it means to be a

mature Christian.
