ExhibitionThe core of the Forest project is an exhibition at which using the

multi-media language of modern photography, object, audio,

video and interactive installations distinctive contemporary artists

from all over the world express their deep personal experiences of

forests.

In the works exhibited artists’ love for forests is mixed with contrasting

depictions of global cataclysms, real and imagined, and models of social

behavior.

Forests are being revealed not only as an ecosystem, but also as a

temple, shelter, playground and a home . At the exhibition visitors

will see all the beauty of forests the way they have neve seen it.

ВыставкаЦентральной частью проекта является выставка, в рамках

которой молодые и признанные фотографы, медиа

художники и графические дизайнеры из Канады, США,

Германии, Англии, России, Эстонии, Японии и других стран

рассказывают о роли лесов в жизни Земли и каждого из нас

с помощью языка современной фотографии, аудио-

визуальных и объектных инсталляций.

В работах авторов проекта глубокая любовь к лесам

перемешивается с изображениями глобальных катаклизмов,

реального и выдуманного, моделей разрушительного и

созидательного социального поведения.

Goals of the project

01

To stimulate a philosophy of awareness and responsibility in behavior

and attitude towards forests in as wide a sector of the general public,

media, and creative industries as possible.

To draw attention (especially of younger generation) to the real situa-

tion with forests provoking understanding, evaluation and — ultimately

— action to halt and reverse the destructive process.

Цели проекта

Донести философию осознанного отношения к лесам в как

можно больших сегментах общества, средств массовой инфор-

мации и творческих течений.

Привлечь внимание общества (особенно молодежи) к реальной

ситуации с лесами (мировыми и российскими), аппелируя к

реальным действиям каждого человека на пути восстановления

экологического равновесия в мире.

БИОГРАФИЯРодилась в 1974 году в Канаде. В 2005 году окончила Институт Искусства и Дизайна Эмили Карр в Ванкувере, получив степень бакалавра изобразительных ис-кусств. В данный момент живет и работает в Москве. До приезда в Россию художница жила и ра-ботала в Германии, Исландии и Великобритании. Ее персональные и групповые выставки проходили в галереях Канады, Англии, США, Германии, Мексики и России.

BIO Kristi Malakoff is a Canadian visual artist. She attended the Chelsea College of Art and Design. Kristi is a 2005 BFA graduate of the Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver where she was the recipient of many awards and scholarships. Since graduating, she has participated in artist residency programs at the Banff Centre, the Stride Gallery, Calgary, SÍM, Reykjavík, Iceland and Proekt Fabrika, Moscow, Russia.

жизни, сердце и душе. Лес вокруг

моего дома в деревне стал продолже-

нием моего тела — я его отлично

знала, несмотря на его постоянные

изменения. Позже, я получила обра-

зование в области лесного хозяйства

и столкнулась лицом к лицу с разру-

шениями естественного порядка

жизни лесов в угоду коммерческим

интересам. Леса красивы, успокои-

тельны. Леса — это моя любовь, моя

страсть, моя тоска, моя боль».

«Forests have had a profound impact

on my life, my heart and my soul. I grew

up in the country and hiking through the

forest was my favorite way to spend time.

The forest around my home became an

extension of my body — I know it well,

though it is forever changing. Later,

I became a forest technician and had to

face the reality of commercial interests

and the destruction of the natural order.

БИОГРАФИЯМедиахудожник и идеолог добро-таризма. Занимается дизайном и авторской графикой, созда-ет анимированные скульптуры, текучие формы логотипов. Ро-дился в 1984 году, в Москве. Большую часть жизни занимается графикой и абстрактной аййден-тикой. Рисование как коммуни-кация привлекает Протея больше всего. Последние 8 лет живет на границе между дизайном и искусством. Основной принцип работы — описание окружающей среды посредством нахождения структурных связей и работы с символами. Со-основатель группы «Крови» и студии Zunge Design.

BIO Media artist, designer. Does disign and graphics, animated sculpture and liquid logo forms. Protey was born in Moscow in 1984. Over the last 8 years he has been between design and art. His work on brand styles de-veloped into a methodology for creating his own projects. The basic principle of his work is description of environment. He is interested in looking for structural connections and sym-bolic solutions. Protey is a co-founder of the Gruppa Krovi and Zunge Design studio.

летия я провел в лесу и около него

около 54 месяца. Это 4.5 года, — при-

мерно столько было маугли, когда его

приютили животные. Меня же прию-

тил город с огромными дорогами и

ночным неоном. Не имея возможно-

сти вернуться обратно, лесом для

меня стал мегаполис: дома — дере-

вьями, дороги — реками, а люди — гри-

бами».

WHY FOREST

«From the day I was born until my 18th

I spent about 54 months inside and

beside the forest. It equals about 4.5

years. Maugli was about this age when

adopted by animals. As for me, I was

adopted by the city with its wide roads

and night neon lights. Not having a

chance to get back, the magepolis

became my forest: houses became trees,

roads became rivers and people became

mushrooms».

Работая с технологиями, звуком, видео и скульптурой она создает инсталляции, вступающие в мощную перекличку со средой. Твига стремится запечатлеть ис-чезающий лес, пробуждая у зри-теля пеструю гамму ощущений - от зыбкости и недолговечности окружающего до медитативного спокойствия. Работы Твиги вы-ставлялтсь в Росcии, США, Шве-ции и Великобритании.

BIO Was born in 1983 in Saint-Petersburg. For the last three years she has been exploring deforested areas in Russia and Finland, working with technology, sound, video and sculpture. In her work she aims to raise the awareness of the vanishing forests, evoke sense of sadness at the disappearing and to preserve these areas by the means of photographic documents and video.Tviga has exhibited her work in Russia, USA, Sweden and UK.

ПОЧЕМУ ЛЕС В рамках проекта будут показаны две

работы художницы. В одной из них

(«Исчезнувший лес») Твига записала

и воспроизвела «дыхание леса», вну-

тренние звуки деревьев, неразличи-

мые человеческим ухом. Слушая их,

зритель ощущает деревья живыми...

деревья, которых больше не суще-

ствует.

WHY FOREST

Using a surface microphone Tviga man-

aged to record the sounds emitted from

inside the trees. When presented in a gal-

lery the viewer is able to scroll a mouse

over each tree and hear the sounds.Tviga

is using interactive video technology to

attempt to collapse the distance between

a viewer and a forest. However, it is fail-

ing, because the distance is not physical,

it is conceptual. The trees, that the viewer

is going to listen to do not exist anymore.tviga.com

Большая часть моих работ посвящена

природе и последствиям человече-

ских действий в разных экосистемах.

Я работаю с живописью, видео, объек-

тами и фотографией, делая окружаю-

щую среду частью инсталляции. На

выставке будет представлена мульти-

сенсорная комбинация этих средств

в одной инсталляции, вовлекая и обо-

стряя все органы чувств посетите-

лей».

WHY FOREST

«This project is very much of interest to me.

I have a large body of work that addresses

nature and mans’ destruction to various

ecosystems. I work with painting, video,

sculpture, and photography, in a hybrid

form of installation/environmental atmo-

sphere. I will present the combination of

all these medias together under one exhi-

bition thus creating a multi-sensory envi-

ronment involving the senses of vision,

touch, smell and sound.»

BIO Cristopher Cichocki lives and works in the desert of Southern California’s Coachella Valley. His core of infl uences spans diverse territories including: Earthworks, Minimalism, Arte Povera, DADA, quantum physics, guerilla art, punk, and experimental music. Encompassing painting, photography, video, sculpture, sound, installation, and performance, Cichocki accents the constant fl ux and sublime entropy within the everday.

ленная полная загадок и фантазий.

Инсталляция «Освещенный лес» была

задумана как светящийся «штабель из

бревен», внутри которых проециру-

ется множество изображений, связан-

ных с лесом: стволы, корни, кольца,

ветви и листва в сложных, легких и

ярких формах. Каждый модуль явля-

ется уникальным и может быть объе-

динен с другими модулями в бесчис-

ленных комбинациях.

WHY FOREST

The visual world of Charlotte McGowan-

Griffin is a universe full of riddles and

fantasy. «Illuminated Forest» installation

was conceived as a glowing ‘woodstack’ in

which the ‘logs’ display projected images

from a diverse forest: trunks, roots, rings,

branches and foliage in intricate, slight,

shadowy or bold formations. Each mod-

ule is unique and can be combined in

myriad formations — the installation is

designed to grow and to shrink, to change

shape and colour.

WHY FOREST

Nicole Schuck combines imagined and

real worlds, creating spaces with

unknown dimensions and changing view-

points. Her drawings, videos and installa-

tions blur the lines between experience,

perception and fantasy. Schuck inter-

weaves natural beauty with elements of

force and cruelty, exploring processes of

decay and danger in relation to poetic

images and vital processes. Through

abstraction she gives possibilities for

rethinking the interplay of nature,

human culture and development.

Получила множество степендий и грантов. Ее работы выставлялись в Музе-ях Искусств Билтефелда, Естес-ственных Наук в Берлине и мно-гих других.

BIONicole Schuck (1967) lives in Berlin. She works with different media such as drawing, video and installation. She received her degree in visual communication/graphic design at University for Applied Sciences in Bielefeld. In 2004 she graduated from University of the Arts Braunschweig in fi ne arts. Her works were presented in the Museum of Art Bielefeld, the Museum for Natural Science Berlin and the Martha Herford, to name a few.

«My work translates ideas from our world

into abstract compositions of flow and

color. The juxtaposition of hard edged,

clean geometry and smooth natural

curves speaks to our modern world’s

relationship between city and country,

developed and raw. Especially for these

murals I will paint evidence of time (rings

of trees), urban expansion (Geometry

cutting into flow), and nature colors ver-

sus urban colors. I strive to convey an

insightful abstract notion of our past,

present, and future relationships with

the wild».

Matt is a participant of such signifi cant contemporary culture festivals like ROJO®NOVA and others.

WHY FOREST

The Forest series depicts abandoned log

flows from clear-cut zones in the area

of Northern Maine’s rivers and lakes. The

trees have been uprooted from the earth

by a machine called a «whole-tree har-

vester». Some of the scarred, deforested

images of clear-cutting seem to recall

Matthew Brady photographs of Civil War

battlefields. The photographs in The For-

est thus became a series of elegies for

landscapes that have incontrovertibly

vanished.

those of the imagination, residual traces

of real places merged into single scenes.

Exploring lines between reality and a con-

structed visual fantasy, they draw on the

strangeness that lies beneath the surface

of the commonplace. In the project the

series and Dwellings.

БИОГРАФИЯТата Вислевская родилась в 1986 году в Москве. Училась на фа-культете журналистики МГУ им. Ломоносова, окончила сценарные курсы во ВГИКе им. С.А. Гераси-мова. В 2010 году стала един-ственным российским участником мультимедийной фотовыставки «La nuit de la photo» (Бре-тань, Франция), на которой были представлены серии фотографий из Исландии, Японии, Швейца-рии. В июле 2011 года в римском театре Оранжа (Прованс, Фран-ция) состоялась вторая выстав-ка, участники которой освещали социально-политические и эколо-гические проблемы.

BIO Tata Vislevskaya was born in 1986 in Moscow. She studied journalism in Moscow State University and graduated from Screen script course in Russian State University of Cinematography. She has been practicing photography since 2008. In 2010 and 2011 Tata represented Russia in the multimedia exhibition «La nuit dela photo» in France with her works from Iceland, Japan and Switzerland speaking about ecological problems.

ПОЧЕМУ ЛЕС В моем представлении лес – это боль-

шой тайник, один из способов прикос-

нуться к самой сути через мхи, мель-

чайшие детали, земной покров, сло-

манные ветки и сгоревшие пни.

Узнать себя. Свою природу. Восстано-

вить связи. Мои фотографии – это не

история красивой безмятежности. Я

чувствую боль и отчаяние, которым

пронизаны лесные чащи, следы

животных, растения. Нельзя закры-

вать глаза, когда вам показывают

ваше же отражение.

In my perception forest is a big hidden

place, one of the ways to reach the

essence through moss, earth surface, lit-

tle details, broken branches, burnt stubs.

To get to know ourselves. Our nature. Re-

establish connections. My photographs

are not a story of a beautiful serenity. I

feel pain and desperation that run

through the depths of forests, animal

prints, plants. We should not close our

eyes when they show us our reflection.

Her works were exhibited at India Song, Waterfall magazine launch, The Other Space, Turning Point Festival, «What the F*** is Happening Now?», Falmer, Art Below Zero etc. Edges, liminal, in-between, contemplative and transcendent are examples of spaces explored in Hannah’s practice. Through installation, her work often becomes cyclical and time-based.

ber the forest where I grew up felt so alive

and sublime — one moment it was protec-

tive, comforting and friendly, the next it

could be hostile and frightening. A place

which encapsulates time, history and

memory: from the greatest tree trunks to

the tiniest insects; well-trodden paths

and those overgrown; the forest’s cycles

are completely disconnected from

human time. It is a place where you lose

all power as a human.»

ПОЧЕМУ ЛЕС «Хиросима» — проект о мучительном

осознании разорванности наших свя-

зей с миром, природой, друг другом,

и необходимости как-то эти связи вос-

становить, вырваться из пустоты

медийного пространства, так называ-

емой «дополненной реальности».

Проект включает в себя фотографии,

найденные на пожарищах объекты,

графику, выполненную углём с пожа-

рищ и текстовой массив свидетельств

хибакуси.

WHY FOREST

Hiroshima is the project about that ago-

nizing feeling of detachment of our con-

nections with the world, nature, each

other and «Hiroshima» - Draft of the pain-

ful awareness of the raggedness of our

relations with the world of nature, each

other, and the need to somehow restore

this connection, to escape from the emp-

tiness of media space, the so-called «aug-

mented reality».

BIOCharly Nijensohn born in 1966 lives and works in Berlin. A fi gurehead of Latin-American video art, Nijensohn received the Antorchas Foundation Award in 1997 and the Konex Platinum Award in 2002. Нихенсона «Dead forest», повествую-

щая о том, как 30 лет назад с целью

электроснабжения города Манаус

(Бразилия) была построена ГЭС «Бал-

бина» в самом сердце Амазонии, на

реке Уатуман. В результате, огромная

территория лесов Амазонии была

затоплена искусственным озером в

2360 кв. км, которое, помимо всего

прочего, заставило уйти со своих

земель племена Ваимири и Атроари.

WHY FOREST

Charly’s epic «Dead Forest» video pre-

sented in the project speaks about the

fact that thirty years ago because of the

construction of the Balbina Hydroelec-

tric Dam (Brasil) in the heart of the Ama-

zonia region the biggest artificial lake in

Latin America was created flooding a

substantial part of the Amazonian forest

and forcing the movement of the tribes

Waimiri and Atroari from their ancestral

territories. It has flooded the area of 2360

square kilometers of forests.

Сре-ди последних — рекламный ролик для Blackberry и выступление на фестивале творческих инду-стрий BLOOM в Германии.

ABOUT The members of LICHTFAKTOR use light to give expression to their creativity. The group experiments with the possibilities yielded by bulb exposure and painting. The LICHTFAKTOR crew intentionally uses the entire space in which a particular work is produced and integrates it into their photos and animated fi lms in such a way that it’s not just a backdrop but a part of the work itself. The group does equally successful commercial and cultural projects.

при помощи технологий светового

граффити —фризлайт.

WHY FOREST

The lightwriting Forest video repre-

sented by LICHTFAKTOR is the first one

done in the nature. This film is some-

thing of a departure for the group as its

previous films have all been shot in

urban environments. The trio of light-

writers travelled to the Hautes Fagnes

(High Fens) region of Belgium and rented

a cabin for a few days from which they

hiked for around three hours each night

to shoot in various locations. It’s all about

the mysticism and beauty of nature.

БИОГРАФИЯХолгер Липман получил диплом скульптура в Академии Искусств Дрездена. Затем учился в аспи-рантурах в Штутгарте и Париже. Переехал в Нью-Йорке и занялся компьютерной графикой в Нью-Йоркском Институте технологий. Вернулся в Германию в 1994 году и начал интенсивно работать с цифровыми технологиями и муль-тимедиа дизайном, став одним из самых ярких представителей со-временного цифророго искусства.

BIO Holger studied at the Art Academy in Dresden (Diploma in Sculpture). Then he studied postgraduate in Stuttgart, Paris, moved to New York and attended computer graphics internship at the Institut of technology, NY. Was back to Germany in 1994 and started radically to work with computers. Got a Multimedia Design education. His focus is on the development of an image and color composition.

«There is something about «home» in it.

I see the whole life as a miracle. I’m

convinced everything is life and

conciousness. Following the movement

of the trees in the wind in front of my

window is a bit like looking at my children,

such a beauty in itself. Сompletely

centered in itself, just being, no past and

than, no expectation... just play, here and

now… Looking or better being with trees

belongs to my life. Over the years the

simple things became the more profound

ones and others diappeard».


Основные идеиВоспроизведение лесов на Земле имеет основополагающее зна-

чение для здоровья человека, экономического роста стран и

защиты окружающей среды.

Экологическая роль лесов

Леса занимают треть земной поверхности и являются гигантской

живой фабрикой планеты. Лес очищает воздух от пыли. Леса

регулируют интенсивность снеготаяния и уровень воды в реках,

предупреждают развитие оврагов, размывы берегов и горных

склонов, стабилизируют состав атмосферы, снижают скорость

ветра на полях, сохраняют полезную фауну и микроорганизмы.

Лесные растения выделяют фитонциды, которые подавляют раз-

витие болезнетворных организмов и оздоровляют окружающую

среду.

Экономическая роль лесов

Леса обеспечивают средствами к существованию более 1 милли-

арда человек. 90% бедного населения планеты напрямую зависит

от лесов.

Социальная роль лесов

Леса являются неотъемлемой частью существования коренных

и традиционных культур многих народностей и этнических

групп. В лесу человек осознает свою сопричастность ко всему

сущему, возвращается к себе, восстанавливается физически и

духовно.

Духовная роль лесов

Леса и деревья имеют важное символическое значение для всех

мировых религий. Деревья символизируют историческую пре-

емственность, они увязывают землю и небеса, хранят в себе поло-

жительную, созидательную, целительную энергетику.

Main ideasSustainably managed forests are fundamental to human health, eco-

nomic growth, productivity and environmental protection.

Ecological role of rofests

Forests, occupying up to a third of the earth’s surface, are a giant fac-

tory, living on, and giving life to the entire Planet. Forests are an essen-

tial part of the meteorological cycle, regulating rainfall, contributing

to the consistency of air temperature and humidity, as well as the cor-

rect O2/CO2 balance. They clean dust from the air, depositing it on the

leaves’ surfaces and transmitting it with rainwater streams into the soil.

Forests regulate the intensity of snow melting and water levels in riv-

ers, prevent the development of gullies, eroding riverbanks and moun-

tain slopes, stabilize the atmosphere composition, reduce wind speed

in the fields, retain valuable fauna and microorganisms. Forest plants

emit phytoncides which suppress growth of the harmful organisms

and thus make the environment healthier.

Economic role of forests

World Bank figures and a number of studies tell us that

forest resources directly contribute to livelihoods of 90% of the 1.2

billion people living in extreme poverty.

Social role of forests

Forests are an integral part of existence of indigenous and traditional

cultures of many nationalities and ethnic groups. Forest is where a

man truly senses his association with all living, recovers physically and

spiritually.

Spiritual role of forests

Forests and trees have an important symbolical meaning in all world

religions. Trees symbolize historical continuity, they link earth and

heaven, and they keep a positive, creative and healing energy.


Устойчивое развитиеЛеса — это огромная часть сложной замкнутой экосистемы, обе-

спечивающей устойчивое развитие человечества. Устойчивое

развитие предполагает равноценный доступ будущих поколений

к ресурсам. На сегодняшний день баланс потребления леса и его

воспроизводства нарушен — текущий уровень потребления лес-

ных ресурсов в разы превышает уровень воспроизводства лесов.

Это баланс должен быть восстановлен.

SustainabilityForests are a huge part of an intricate ecosystem which provides

sustainability and development for all of Mankind. Existing

sustainability and future development depends on equal access

to the forests resources for this and future generations. Today the

balance of consumption and replacement of foersts is upset — the

current level of exploitation of forests resources is dramatically

higher than the level of forests replenishment. That balance has to

be redressed.

FOREST is a temple in Nature FOREST is an ecosystem without which we cannot live FOREST is our breath, our airFOREST we can enjoy and preserve together — something we can all share
