WELCOME TO ASIA RESEARCH CENTRE
The Asia Research Centre (ARC) is a specialized research unit within Copenhagen Business
School (CBS), offering research and teaching in the field of Asian studies. With its particular
strengths on current political, social, economic and business developments in the Asian region,
ARC provides a productive environment for high-quality research.
ARC provides timely, scholarly, contextual understanding of Asia to a host of interested parties
representing academia, the political establishment, the media, the public as well as the national
and international business community.
ARC has valuable experience in international co-operation and partnerships with business and
government. ARC strives to further develop these initiatives in co-operation with external
partners and to consolidate ARC as a major global hub for research and educational initiatives.
The 2012 Annual Report shows the breadth and depth of our academic activities.

MISSION
The mission of ARC is to provide up-to-date research and reliable analysis of current political,
social, economic and business developments associated with and contributing to the present shift
from West to East in global economics and business development. In understanding and coming to
grips with the implications of these immense changes in the Asian region, the Centre will especially
focus on China, Japan, India and Southeast Asia, mainly Malaysia and Indonesia. On the basis of
cross-disciplinary, cross-regional and national studies, ARC will continue to produce high-quality
analyses to a host of interested parties representing academia, the political establishment and
governments, the media, the public as well as the national and international business communities.
ARC’s goal is to maintain CBS’s position as the key research centre for Asian studies in the Nordic
region. On the basis of this platform, ARC aims to develop into a world class research centre on
business and economic development in Asia in a political and social context.
This implies:
To deepen and upgrade Asia-related research activities at CBS as a whole and establish
research projects and networks focusing on Asia that have international reach and impact.
To contribute with research-based educational inputs to the Asian Studies Programme and
introduce relevant Asia-related materials in other courses at CBS, including Executive Educa-
tion.
To disseminate its results to the international research community, to the business world and
to the public.
VISION
ARC is a specialized research unit within CBS offering high-quality research on important aspects
of the tectonic shifts in the global economy and the rise of Asia. The strength of ARC is its breadth
in terms of disciplines and geographical competence. This is a core competence that sets it apart
from other research centres in Asian studies in Europe and provides the basis for high-quality
interdisciplinary research.
The vision of ARC is to enlarge its research portfolio by attracting strong talent to undertake cutting-
edge research within the Centre’s particular areas of strength on China, India, Japan and the region
of Southeast Asia with main emphasis on Indonesia and Malaysia. In terms of disciplines, the Centre
will continue to attract faculty within a broad range of social science disciplines and business
studies. By consolidating and expanding the Centre in key thematic areas, collaborating with other
researchers and centres at CBS and research organizations worldwide, ARC strives to create a solid
institutional identity to effectively meet its mission and research goals.
4
亞洲研究中心
Important means to reach these goals are to continue to:
Undertake high-quality contextualized research on contemporary developments in the Asian region.
Arrange cutting-edge workshops, international conferences and guest lectures on Asia.
Edit and publish the Copenhagen Journal of Asian Studies (double blind reviewed academic journal)
and the Copenhagen Discussion Papers (working paper series on Asia).
Cooperate with Danish and international business and academic partners as well as governmental
institutions and NGOs.
Participate in the public debate through the media and give talks in business, governmental and
public settings.
Provide research input and inspiration to Asia Business Forum and Danish Chinese Business Forum.
Maintain CBS’s first mover advantage in business-related Asian Studies in the Nordic area.
Host foreign visitors who can contribute to the research environment at ARC.
Maintain ARC’s position as the best place to do Asia-related research at CBS while stimulating cross-
departmental research and teaching initiatives.
RESEARCH
ARC is organized into four research units. These are:
China Research Unit,
India Research Unit,
Japan Research Unit, and
Southeast Asia Research Unit
These units are organized with the explicit strategy of strong research not only within these areas but also
cross-regional and comparative studies. The Centre will continue to emphasize its interdisciplinary
approaches to studying Asian countries, regions, and issues that link them to each other and the global
system.
It is the Centre’s ambition to integrate its different research projects, both collective and individual research
projects, to form a coherent but not monolithic centre research programme. It is thus the aim of our current
research strategy that a majority of our research projects operate within the same overall frame: Changing
state–business relations in Asia and their embeddedness in specific political, cultural and economic contexts.
This includes ownership structures, state preferential policies in the form of favourable bank loans and
hidden subsidies, the political framework, including party–state–business relations in state capitalist
countries, indigenous forms of Asian management, etc.

impart knowledge about strategic and global management to Chinese top executives, as well as giving them a
concrete understanding of the Nordic model and business system. The programme encompasses the 120 largest
and most important Chinese companies, the so-called national champions. During this year’s programme, the
Danish Minister of European Affairs, Nicolai Wammen, hosted a welcome dinner for the delegation, and the

ARC & THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY
ARC is active in developing its relationship with corporate and business organizations through invited guest
lectures and presentations, and through the dissemination of research results in specific business-oriented
papers and books written by ARC researchers.
In addition, ARC continues to provide academic input to the Asia Business Forum’s seminars. Asia Business
Forum is jointly operated by CBS through ARC and the Asia House Foundation, and organizes research-based
seminars and networking opportunities on a regular basis for business executives actively engaged in Asia.
The representation of major Danish companies in the ARC Advisory Board is an example of the close link
between ARC and the business community. There is an important flow of ideas and knowledge from business
representatives and public officials to the Centre, and an active dissemination of research results to companies
and public entities from ARC.
