A Declaration Of TheA Declaration Of TheA Declaration Of TheA Declaration Of TheXII KeysKeysKeysKeys

H erefollows thethird part of my intended writings, wherein is truly

showed theoriginal and primematter of our Philosophic S tone, whichis a perfect instruction to thepractical part, which shows thedirect wayto theinexaustiblefountain of health, arid of theabundanceof riches to

providefor mans necessaries; and this is a Declaration of my formerwritings, which is left for a lovetoken to all those that arelovers of Philosophy. My friend you must note, that by this intended work touching theMinerals, I had reason to prefix the two parts of M inera1s, andMetals, and their ores, holding it a necessity to hold forth a light untothe ignorant, how that one spirit from above frames all such ores,Metals, arid M inerals, taking their original under-ground for to

generatethereby. F or earth is always ready and covetous to attract andto retain that spirit, which proceeded fromHeavens powers, which itpresents in process of timein a formality and perfection. Themanner of it has been spoken of sufficiently in my former writings, which is thereason why I giveonly hints of themin this place.Note, that all things proceed from a heavenly influence, elementaloperation, earthly substance, fromthis mixturearisethefour Elements,Water, A ir, Earth, which engender by thehelp of firehid therein, in a

warmdigestion, producing a S oul, S pirit, and Body. These are thethree prime principles, which in a coagulation come to a Mercury,S ulphur, and S alt, these threebeing in conjunction, according to thenatureof theseed producea perfect body; beit in theKingdom, either of M inerals, A nimals, or Vegetables. A ll things in theworld, that arevisibleand palpablearedivided into thesethreeKingdoms; theAnimal

which contains such that havea lively breath, composed of flesh andblood, as men, beasts, worms, fishes, fouls. The Vegetables whichcontains trees, herbs, seeds, roots, fruits, and all such things that areof a growing quality, theMinerals contains all manner of ores, Metals,

Minerals, M arcasites, Calxes, Zinks, L obols, all sorts of flints, pebbles, wismuths, stones, precious ones and others.Animals have their special seed, a spermatic substance, which aftercopulation generate flesh and blood, which seed is their PRIMA

MATERIA, from a heavenly influence, created by God of the fourElements, wrought by nature, which formerly were quoted in mywritings.Vegetables also have their proper seed which God bestowed on them,

according to their several qualities and formby a heavenly and siderialinfluence, and receivetheir elemential fruitful growing fromtheearth, with an order, thereby to generateand augment.Minerals and Metals also havetheir original seed fromGod, by theheavens influence in a liquid aerial substance, by a M ineral S pirit,S ulphureous S oul and Earthly Salt in onebody joined; of these Ihavespoken in my former writings.Note further, if any of these Metalline and Mineral kinds shall be

brought to a further propagation and augmentation, it must bereduced toits first seed and PRIMA MATERIA.I f you will transmuteMetals, augment them, bring theminto a tincture,or philosophic S tone, you must first understand, how you may destroyby a S pagyric A rt, theMetallineand Mineral formand separateit intoMercury, S ulphur, and S alt, thesethreemust bepurely separated, andbrought to their first principles. This separation is donein, and by a Mercurial S pirit, S ulphureous

S oul and whiteS alt. Thesethreein a dueordering of a truemanualmust bejoined again, that they may bebrought to thehighest and mostperfect purity.I n which conjunction must exactly beobserved thequantity; after thisconjunction the whole substance is meerly a liquid substance and

I lived in, and happily obtained it. Thehighest in heaven bestowed hisfurther grace and blessing upon me, that I took unto furtherconsideration thetinging animated spirits placed and planted into theirseveral bodies. L et no man be ashamed to learn, to add more to his

learning, and to divefurther into that, which was hid fromhim, notwithstanding his knowing ways. Naturereserves many things in hersecrecy, which mens dull understanding and shortness of life cannotreach into.Whereas God in his great goodness has bestowed this great gift uponme, for an improvement of that talent, I haveimparted thesameto myfellow Christians in thesaid XII Keys. Those that are indued with deeper wits and knowledge, and in their

hearty and careful endeavours strivefurther to divein theArt, will meetin thesameplacewith a moreeasieand moreknown matter, which wasalmost named and set down, of an effectual quality, out of which in likemanner, as theancients beforeme, in their exact speculation and practickhavein theend better known theonly scopeand drift, which has beenpractised several times by mealso, in a shorter time, and less painstaking, both they and I naveobtained health and riches; in this knownand despicablematter and Mineral substanceis found a S ulphur and

tincturemoreeffectual, and moreworthy, than thebest Gold can afford, which is fluid and open, and its M ercurial S pirit also, and its mysticalS alt is freeand open, whosevirtues may with less pains in a visiblemanner bedrawn fromit. He that has considered exactly my XII Keys, frequently perusing thesame most needs conceive, and that therein is held forth the wholepreparation of our stone, fromthebeginning to theend, without anydefect, yet so that it only should beprepared of Gold fitted for it. But we,

according to Gods ordinancein nature, havepointed at a Gold, which ismuch better, and requires to betaken into a deep consideration, whichbeing unknown and strangeto novices, for somereasons I forbear togivethemany direction thereunto, with a resolution to writeand to pointat such matters, as themselves areinclined to seek for their seed in them.

At the beginning of my XII  Keys, according to the manner of Philosophers, in a parabolical way I maderelation of theproperty andwork of our stoneand balsom, how it was madeby Artists, which as byan inhearitanceit cameto mealso, wherein I spokeas much as was meet

of thegovernment of thefire, chargeableappearance, and of thechiefestplanetical colours, and thefinal end thereof. A fter theaccomplishment of thesepuruse well the XII Keys, for each contains a PARTICULAR

work. Thefirst Key informs you, that if you seek for theseed in a MetallineBody, as in theGold, then beforeall things it must most exactly bepurged fromall its impureleprosie, and that nothing must bemixed withour fountain, but such, which is of a pure spermatic quality. This

purifying is performed with Antimony, which stands in a near relation, and affinity unto Gold, which is thereason, why antimonial S ulphurpurges theS oul of Gold, graduating thesameto a very high degree. Onthe other-side, the Gold can meliorate in a short time the S oul of Antimony, and can bring it to a firmfixation, exalting Antimony andGold to a dignity and virtue, and can bebrought not only into a whitemetal of LUNA, but also to a transcendent medicinefor mans health, of which you shall havea further direction hereafter, which I shall treat in

particular of Antimony. A lthough Antimony has promised untoSATURN  a sociable brotherhood, because Antimony's qualificationdoes rest in some sort on the quality of SATURN  in an equalconcordance, yet after thefixation of theexalted S ulphur of Antimony, his next friend SATURN cannot get any prey fromhim, because theKing received himinto his golden Palace, and makehimpartaker of his Trimphing Kingdom. This is thereason, why hecan endurenow heatand frost, and overcomes it, and stands with theKing a conqueror in

great and transcendant glory. Theputrifying of theGold is performed thus: L aminatethegold thinly, after a due manner, cast it thrice through Antimony, afterwards theREGULUS which is set at thethrough casting, must bemelted beforetheblast in a strong fire, and driven off with SATURN, then you will find

thepurest, fairest, most lustrous Gold, pleasant to behold, as much asthelustreof SOL is. This Gold is not fitted to surrender its innermost being first broughtfromits fixedness into a destructiveform, and pass through theS alt-

S ea of its corruptibleness, is drowned therein, escaped again, andappears visibly.

M y friend note, and takethat into a serious consideration, becausethe

chiefest point lyes herein; causea Balneumto bemade, let nothing comeinto it, which should not bethere, that thenobleseed of theGold fall notinto a destructiveand irrecoverableopposition after its destruction, andtakean exact and careful view of such things, which my second Keyinforms you of, namely what matter you ought to taketo theKINGS

BALNEUM, whereby the KING  is destroyed, and its external formbroken, and its undefiled S oul may come forth, to this purpose willserve the DRAGON  and the EAGLE, which is  NITER   and SAL

ARMONIACK , both which after their union are made into aAQUAFORT, as you shall be further informed of in my Manuals, where I shall treat in particular of Gold, of other Metals andMinerals, into which BALNEUM theKing is thrown, being first, asin thequoted placeyou shall hear; brought into an AMALGAMA of Mercury and of S ulphur, which presently seizes on him, corrodes allhis members, and is dissolved, and is presently mortified of his S alt-water, into a most splendent transparent oil.

You must note, that this dissolution is not sufficient, and theKing isnot minded as yet to let go his S oul out of his fixed body, which you canseewhen you separatethewater fromthedissolved body of theKing, whereyou shall find fixed powder of Gold, out of which you will hardlyget his S oul that is therein.

Thereforefollow my counsel and bear theyoak, which I borebeforeyou, and learn to know exactly in pains taking, further thus, as I shallinformyou. Having dissolved your Gold wholly in thesaid water, andbrought it into a pleasant yellow oil, then let it stand well luted for a day

and a night in a very gentleBALNEUM MARIA, theFECES whicharesettled, must beseparated fromit, then takethis puredissolution, putit into a well coated body, or Retort, apply a Helmet to it, with aReceiver, in thebest manner luted to it, set it into a S and Cupel, drivetheGold with thewater over theHelmet, iteratethis a third time, abstractthewater in BALNEUM MARIE, you will find a fair Gold-powder,keep this in a glass for an hour in fire, let theremaining humidity bedrawn fromit.

T  TT  T  hen takeof good spirit of S alt-niter onepart, and of dephlegmed

S pirit of ordinary salt, threeparts, pour thesespirits together warmed alittle, into a body on thefore-written Gold powder, lutea Helmet and

Receiver to it, drivetheGold over as formerly in sand several times withan iterated distillation, the oftner the better, let the Gold come to bevolatilemoreand more, and at last let all comeover. By this repeateddriving over, its fixed body is divided, all its members aretorn asunder, and opened, and leaves willingly its S oul to a S pecial judge, of whichmy third Key will givesufficient information.Notefurther, that after this work thosesalt spirits must beabstractedfrom the Gold, which was driven over, very gently in BALNEO

MARIE, let nothing of thetinctureof theGold comeover, that thebodysuffer not any diminuation; then take that Gold, or rather theseChrystals of Gold fromwhich you haveseparated thewater, put it in areverberating pan, set it under a mussle, let its first firebegentlefor anhour, oet all its corrosiveness betaken away, then your powder will beof a fair scarlet colour, as subtileas ever was seen, put it in a clean viol,

pour on it fresh spirit of ordinary salt, first brought to a sweetness, letit stand in a gentle digestion, let that spirit be deeply tinged andtransparent, red likea Ruby, cant off, pour on fresh, extract again, iteratethework of canting off and pouring on, till no moretinctureof it

appears, put all theseextractions together, separatethemin BALNEOgently fromtheS ulphur of SOL, then that powder is subtileand tender;of great worth; this matter is such, which in a short process transmutesLUNA in its tinctureto thehighest perfection, according to thedirectionof myXII Keys.Hethat has someknowledgeherein, may makethis quire; whither thisextracted dry Soul and S ulphur of theKing bejust that S oul, of whichPhilosophers havethis saying; thePhilosophic work for thepreparation

of the most precious stone requires three things, viz., a wet volatileMercury, or a Mercurial S pirit, a wet volatileS ulphureous S oul, anda dry Astral S alt, which after its dissolution together with thetwo firstmust beapparent and known in a waterish form; which way comes thatabout, because in this process nothing is spoken of any MercurialS pirit and Volatile S oul, but the S oul of the King appeared in asubtileformof powder? Theanswer hereunto I delay so long till theQuerist learns better to understand thedistinction in this book, and I

will performmy promise, and set his anxious and intangled mind atliberty, which is so much troubled about this doubt, and will deal withhimas a good father may deal with his son; in and with this SCOPE,wherein our Mastery lyes, havebeen fooled most of thewits, leadingthemcaptive in their erroneous ways, being led about in a desert of misled ways, becausein thosesupposed deep wits, they had not conceivedso much of themanner, how all things of theworld aregenerated, andthat every S pirit must havea S oul and every S oul a fit S pirit, and

that both S pirit and S oul areS pirits and spiritual, which must haveabody, in which they may havea dwelling.Gold and S ilver, but chiefly Gold is brought to thehighest fixedness, bysuch degrees as naturedid afford, insomuch its natureis found very hotand fiery, freed fromall phlegmatick humidity, of whichLUNA is not sowholly freed, though shehas obtained a S ulphur-fixed degree, and stays

Page 12: Basilis Valentine

for theKing, to warmher cold body with his hot seed, which concerns theparticulars, and belongs unto them, which in that placeshall beplainlydemonstrated.I n Gold there is no waterish humidity at all, unless it werereduced

again into Vitriol, which would be but an useless and unprofitablework, and would requirehugeexpenses, in casethePhilosophers S toneshould beof Vitriol of Gold, of which theremust behad great store;indeed in that Vitriol therewould befound a convenient spirit; whichnaturewould desire, of a whitequality, as also a S oul and S alt of aglorious essence. But what Countries, Goods, L ands, havebeen dilapidated this way, Iwaveto discourseof only, this warning I giveto my Disciples, nature

having left a nearer way to keep and to imitatethat, that they also mighttakeheed to fall into such extreamand inextricablepoverties. TheS olar MercurySQL, being never brought so far unto destruction, neither did theancient Philosophers ever makeuseof that way, as beinga thing clean contrary unto nature, containing indeed an humidity, but itis a meer Elemental waterish humidity after its dissolution, and goodfor nothing, water and other principles do not stand in theElements, buttheElements rest in theprinciples and seeds of Metals, of thewhich I

havespoken formerly. Thereforelet nonebeso over witty, as to makeour stoneonly of dry and fully digested Gold; becauseits phlegmatickhumidity is entered into a dry fixedness and fixed coagulation, which isnot found so in other Metals, though they also aresubject to a hardcoagulation and passed through thefire, yet arenot wholly digested, norbrought to a full maturity fromthenatural original root; which ought tobetaken noticeof; and benot offended at my former writings, if theyseemto run contrary against this.

Though I haveshowed, that theS pirit, S oul, and Body comeall fromoneMetallineessence, and must beprepared thus, among which I holdtheGold to bethebest, however I dealt herein as it seemed fit for aPhilosopher, theliketheancient Philosophers havedonebeforeme, butI hopeyou took noticeof my protest-ration, that I gavespecial causethereby to your speculation, to takethebetter noticeof Natureand her

Page 13: Basilis Valentine

principle, and to consider theoriginal; becauseit was not meet for metoinformall men, how thedoors arebolted within, and especially at thattime, when I never intended to writethus plainly of thesethings, whichare hid even from the best of men, but when my heavenly Prince

commanded at thechanging of my mind, not to bury theimparted talent, but to do theliketo those, whomGod think worthy, to leaveit to them.Onerulemoremust I put to thy remembrance, of such points, whichformerly I haveset down, of which I spokenow, that you may thelessblameme, as if I did refusethesethings now, which I formerly wroteof.Peruseall such which sincethebeginning of theworld havewritten of Metals, you will find, that they wereall of onemind, and that I make

useof their sayings; that thefirst and thelast M etal is a Metal, becausethefirst Metal has already obtained, and gotten theforth-going seed of Metals in a Metallinequality, which does nothing else, but that it goeson ancessantly in theMetallinegenerations, as I spokeof in thefirstand second part of M inerals and Metals, and in this part also I havespoken of it in several places. Many havecalled Gold L ead, and L ead they called Gold, becauseit wasfound not only of the same ponderousness, but because three deep

glittering stones havesolely gotten fromthis P lanet. Their transcendentperfection, and many other causes besides, which to relatehere, wouldfall to long and needless. And this is it which asks wisdom todistinguish in this and other things, and exactly to search into Godsmysteries, and natures laid beforeus. But man through ADAMS fallbeing brought to a deep blindness, thereforemens understanding aresoeclipsed, that they can hardly conceive of this, and of other mysticalmatters in nature.

Theobduration being so great among thecovetous, that for themost partthey search and diveinto such mysteries out of meer coverousness, pride, and ambition, made the ancient P hilosophers upon command andinspiration of thehighest aimat that, as to put a certain stay to theirhands, and to writesuch mysteries in such a manner, that unworthy menshould not understand it, and but worthy men only in their illumination

glittering MINERA for an offering, which in his mineis grown of thefirst matter of all Metals, if this MINERA after its preparation, whichhewill show unto you, is set into a strong sublimation, mixed with threeparts of bole, or tyle meal, then rises to the highest mount a noble

sublimate, likelittle feathers, or ALUMEN PLUMOSUM, which induetimedissolves into a strong and effectual water, which brings thyseed in a littleputrefaction very suddenly into thefirst volatility, if so betherebeadded to it a duequantity of water, that it may bedissolvedtherein, there thetwig, with thebulk does unite, that they areable toascend abovethehighest mountain, and stay inseparably together a S ouland S pirit, or a S pirit and S oul.I t is requisitethat you bestored with water for thebody or salt to

dissolvethesamealso, and to coagulatethesameinto a new clarifiedbody, which will never part usunder, neither in lovenor woe, becausethey areof onenature, nativity, and original, and havebeen so fromthebeginning. F or they all havetheir beginning and birth fromthepower of this volatilebird. But remember well that theseMineral S pirits arein other Metals also, and arefound effectual in oneMineral, fromwhencewith moreeaseandless charges it may behad; thebusiness is only herein, that you learn to

know, what this Mercurial S pirit, Mercurial S oul, and Astral S altis, that theonemay not betaken in stead of theother, which would causea huge error. You will find, that the nature of the golden S ulphurconfined only in all Metals, which arecomprehended among thered, andhavea fellow dominion with other M inerals, by reason of the fierytinging S pirits, but theMagnetic power and its quality rests in itswhiteMercurial S pirit, which binds theS oul, and dissolves thebody, thereforetheASTRUM of SQL is found not only in Gold, that with the

addition of the S pirit of Mercury and the SOLAR   S alt only thePhilosophers S tonecould bemade, but may in likemanner, bepreparedartificially out of Copper and S teel, two immatureMetals, both whichas maleand femalehavered tinging qualities, as well as Gold itself, whither thesamebetaken out of onealone, or out of both, being firstentered into an union.

Page 16: Basilis Valentine

Besides, this M ineral in our M others tongue is a M ineral, calledCOPPER  water, and of broken, or digged Verdigreece, or Copper, therecan bemadea Vitriol, in all which is found gloriously a S oul of thebest Gold, and come well to pass very profitably many ways, no

Country clown can believeit. Thereforenotehere, what you ought to observe, intend they thoughts, andgivenot over, unless you comeso far, that you know natures mysticalconjunction and her dissolution, then you will find, what is requisiteforyou to know, and return thanks unto they Creator, makeuseof it for hisglory, and bebeneficial to theneedy. This whiteS pirit is thetrueMercury of Philosophers, which has beenbeforeme, and will beafter me, without which thePhilosophers S tone,

and thegreat mystery cannot be made, neither UNIVERSALLY norPARTICULARLY, much less a PARTICULAR  transmutation. A ndthis S pirit is theKey to theopening of all Metals, becausethey havetheir descent fromits S anguinity, as you heard often.S o it is that truePRIMUM MOBILE, sought of by many thousands, and found by few, and yet all theworld is greedy of it, is sought afaroff, and found near at hand, it is and moves beforetheeyes of all men,for if this S pirit befed with a MetallineS ulphur and S alt, of these

threetherewill beonematter made, not much unliketo thePhilosophersgreat S tone, however duly must it beproceeded in, and a trueprocessfromthebeginning to theend must beobserved, returned, and broughtinto this PRIMA MATERIA, as theS pirit himself is; then both theseof oneequidescent and birth by means of firewith coagulating of theS pirit may begenerated a third timeto a firmfixation, and to a puretransparent whiteclarified body, then after this accomplishedALBEDO

theS oul, which is dissolved, must seek for her rest again, penetrate

such a purebody, unitewith thesame, and riseher dwelling therein, thatthesethreebepermanent, and abiding constantly in onebody eternallyclarified. And that you may beinformed, how in this manner both your dissolvedseeds, as theS pirit of MERCURY, and theS oul of theGold bemade

Page 17: Basilis Valentine

again fixed and corporeal, notethat it is doneonly by theproper S alt of SQL, which in this A rt is called a body. Now observehere, that you takeno heterogeneal thing instead of it.What manner of process is hereused, read my fourth KEY, wherethe

truth of it is held forth with singular examples, and proofs; but you areespecially to observe(in caseyou do not understand that Key) this plainand trueinformation, look upon thebody of Gold, not as if no otherbenefit could bereaped of it, but only his S oul; not so; imputeno suchweakness into that body, but you havedrawn forth its S ulphur, thereisyet in it theS alt of glory, and thetriumphant VICTRIX, without whichyour spermatick seed cannot bebrought into any coagulation. And even this salt now, of which I madeso long a discourse, how you

ought to bring it out of its corporeal formthrough means of theS piritof Mercury into its PRIMA MATERIA, is afterward turned again intoa deeply purified and exalted body. Thereforetakeyour SOLAR  earth, out of which you sow your seeds, orthetrueIRUS blood, and reduceit by reverberating to a fixed powder, and subtileimpalpableashes, extract fromthencea very subtileS alt, asbright as ivory is, hereafter I will teach you in themanuals, how thebody of SQL is anatomized by theparticulars, and to bring it into a

S ulphur, S alt and Mercury. Then proceed unto the practick andconjunction, and havea care, that you beprovident therein, that at theirconjunction you do not too much to theone, nor too littleto theother, takenoticeof thequantity, and observeexactly thedivision of theseeds, hereunto minister a certain measure, and mark my sixth KEY, thenproceed in thebegun process, according to the order of theS eventh,Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth KEYS, as formerly I had informed youabout it, go on with it to theappearanceof theKings honour and glory,

to his highest purple garment, and pure golden piece, is called thetriumphing L ord and Conquerour over all his subjects, fromtheEast totheWest; which if you haveattained unto themreturn thanks to God, befervent in praying, bemindful of thepoor, bea student unto sobriety, temperance, abstinence, and above all unto taciturnity; for it is thegreatest and most hainous sin, to let unworthy men know of it.

Theaugmentation of this heavenly stone, as also the fermentation isneedless to bespoken of in that place, as being described in my last twoKEYS, and held forth to thefull, not doubting if God grants so muchblessing, and imparts this stone, thesenseof thesetwo KEYS will be

moreconceived of; for no heterogeneal things must bebrought to ourMetallinesubstance, neither at thebeginning, middle, or end, but theMercurial S pirit, and thedigested Medicine, spoken of in my eleventhKEY. To befurther as good as I promised, concerning other things, quoted inmy KEYS, know ye, that no Philosopher is tied wholly unto theMetalof Gold, of which I spoke largely hitherto, and described the truefundamentals thereof, and as you heard afore, thewholemystery lies

herein, viz., in thetinging of red fiery S pirits of MetallineS ouls, andall what is tinged red, and is known to havea fierceS ulphur, all sucharekind to theSOLAR ASTRUM, and when theMercurial S pirit is joined with, then theproceedings may go on UNIVERSALITER  andPARTICULARITER , that a tincturebeobtained fromthem, wherebyMetals and VULGAR MERCURY  can be exalted, and be orderedaccording to thetenor of theprocess.S uch S ouls and goldish SULPHURS  are found most effectual in

MARS and VENUS, as also in VITRIOL, and both VENUS  andMARS  can be reduced into a most effectual VITRIOL, in whichMetalline VITRIOL  afterward all the three PRINCIPLES  asMERCURY, SULPHUR , andSALT arefound under oneheaven, andwith littlepains and short timeeach can betaken out of it apart, as youshall hear, when I shall make further relation of the MineralVITRIOL, which is digged inHUNGARY, of a high gradation. Now if you havewit and understanding, and art inclined and heartily

desireto conceiveof thetruemeaning of my KEYS, and of my otherwritings, thereby to unlock thelocks of Metals for our stone, then youshould havetaken noticeand observed, that in all theseI havewrittennot only of the Metal SQL, of its S ulphur and S alt, but I haveinterlined and mingled also, and made UNIFORMAL  other redMETALS, from whence may be had the MYSTICAI MASTERY;

thereforemen ought to iterateoften thereading of Philosophic books, then a truesenseand meaning may bedrawn fromthem, which withoutdivineillumination cannot beneither, or.But hoping that those, who arefully and really, resolved to inclinetheir

hearts unto wisdom, will givemoreattention thereunto, than theothermad worldlings, for whomthesemy writings werenot intended; for Ispokeas plainly as ever possibly I could, and this kindled light shallfurther bepurified, so that trueand sincerenovicies may havea full lightwithout an eclipsefromtheir beginning to their ending. To which end Itook thesepains to disclosethat, which all theworld was silent in, andconcealed it to their last end, and buried it in silenceto their very graves. ThescopeI aimed at, in so doing, was not to hunt after any vain glory,

but rather, that Gods gracious provident goodness might beheld forthunto posterity, that thefutureages might becomeseeing, and someof theposterities eyes might bekept open, and behelpful unto their needy fellowArtists, and makethempartakers of Gods graces and gifts, though mymind bemightily perplexed, when I think on what I havedone, becauseI writeso plainly, not knowing into whosehands after my departurethesemy writings may come: However, I hope, let thembewhat theywill, that they will remember, and lay to heart my faithful writings

inserted in my former and thesepresent writings, that they deal with thisbook, and useit so, that they may givegood account for it to A lmightyGod. Touching further theVITRIOL, I should makemention of it in myManuals, whereI treat and writegenerally of M inerals; but it beingsuch a singular M ineral, whosefellow wholenaturedoes not produce, besides, Vitriol beforeall others is of great affinity unto Metals, and isnext kin unto them, for out of all Metals therecan bemadea vitriol, or

chrystal (chrystal and vitriol is taken for one) thereforeI would notbereaveit of its own praise, and put its commendation too far off, butrather prefer it, as thereis just cause, beforeother Minerals, and thefirst place, next to Metals should begiven unto it; for (setting asideallMetals and Minerals) this is sufficient to makethePhilosophers S toneof it, which no other in the world can do the like, though some

PARTICULARITER   are a help to further that work, andANTIMONY aloneis a sufficient master hereunto, as in its dueplacemoreshall bespoken of. However noneis thus much dignified in itsworthiness, that thesaid Philosophic S tonecould bemadeof it as this

VITRIOL is. Thereancient Philosophers haveconcealed this M ineralas much as ever they could, and would not reveal thesameto their ownchildren, that they should not divulge it in the world, but be keptSECRET, though they published, that such preparation is madeout of one thing, and out of one body, which has the nature of SOL  andLUNA, and contains also theMercury, wherein they said trueenoughbecauseit is so. But hereI must admonish you, that you may turn thisargument, and settle your thoughts wholly upon Metalline Vitriol,

becauseI entrusted you, that out of VENUS and MARS therecan bemadean excellent Vitriol, wherein arefound thethreeprinciples for thegeneration of our stone, but you must further notealso, that neverthelessthesethreeMetals, as SPIRITUS, ANIMA, CORPUS, areburied andhid in a Mineral Vitriol, as in a M ineral itself. Understand thisaccording to the distinct natures of Vitriol. F or the best, whichaccording to my experienceshowed itself most effectual, herein is that, which is broken, and digged in HUNGARY, of a very deep degreeof

tincture, not very unlikeunto fair blueZAPHIRE, having very littleof humidities, and other additionals, or strange ores; the oftner it isdissolved and coagulated, themoreis it exalted in its deep tinging colour, and is beheld with great admiration. This high graduated VITRIOL is found crudein thoseplaces, whereGold, Copper, I ron, is broken and digged, and is abundantlytransported fromthence into foreign parts, insomuch that sometimesthereis great scantness of it in thoseparts, and elsewhere.

Though thevulgar peoplecan afford no better nameto it, calling it onlya COPPER-WATER , however, ancient Philosophers by reason of itsunspeakablevirtueand dignity extolled it, and called it VITRIOLVM,for that reason, becauseits S piritual oil contains all thethreeprinciplesof all thetriumphing qualities.

I f you get such deep graduated and well prepared Mineral, calledVITRIOL, then pray to God for understanding and wisdomfor yourintention and after you havecalcined it, put it into a well coated Retort, driveit gently at first, then increasethefire, therecomes in theformof a

whiteS pirit of Vitriol in themanner of ahorrid fume, or wind, andcomes into theReceiver as long as it has any such material in it. Andnow, that in this wind areinvisibly hid all theTHREE PRINCIPLES,and cometogether out of that dwelling, thereforeit is not necessary, toseek and search always in precious things, becauseby this means thereis a nearer way open unto natures mysteries, and is held forth to allsuch; which areableto conceiveof A rt and Wisdom. Now if you separateand freethis expelled spirit well and purely PER

MODUM DISTILLATIONIS, fromits earthly humidity, then in thebottomof theglass you will find thetreasure, and fundamentals of allthePhilosophers, and yet known to few, which is a red oil, as ponderousin weight as ever any Lead, or Gold may be, as thick as blood, of aburning fiery quality, which is that truefluid Gold of thePhilosophers, which naturedrovetogether fromthethreeprinciples, wherein is found aS pirit, S oul, and Body, and is that PHILOSOPHIC GOLD, savingone, which is its dissolution, during the fire, and not subject to any

corruptibleness, elseit flys away with Body and S oul, for neither waternor earth can do it any hurt, because it receives its first birth andbeginning froma heavenly water, which in duetimeis poured down upontheearth.I n these together driven goldish waters lie hid that true bird andEAGLE, theKing with his heavenly SPLENDOUR  together with itsclarified SALT, which three you find shut up in this one thing andgolden property, and fromthenceyou will get all that, which you have

need of for your intention. Thereforeset that golden body you haveobtained, which in dignity andvirtue is exalted beyond all other Gold, into its due and lawfuldissolution, its duetime, then theAngel of thehighest will appear untothee, and tell theethat it is thesolver of all themysteries in theworld, receiveit with joy and keep it safe, for its quality is moreheavenly than

earthly, thereforedoes it heartily inclineto striveafter that, which isabove, fromwhenceit had its original.I f you haveseparated this Prophet fromhis matter which remained, then you need not to undertakeany further process, you were taught

PARABOLICALLY in my XII KEYS. F or even in his remainingformal substanceyou may find, and expect fromthence, a pureimmortalS oul, together with theglory of theS alt, both which areobtained bymeans of theS pirit, and must behad fromthence, and no impure, orcontrary thing must beadded thereunto. And it is done in the samemanner as I told you in myKEYS, with theS oul and S alt of theGoldby the SATURNAL water, in whose place this S piritual MercurialS pirit might beused with better advantage.

Observeonly this difference, that theS alt must bedrawn forth fromtheMercurial body, as it happened unto the S oul, with the S pirit of Mercury; whereas on theother sidetheS alt of Gold must not bedrawnforth with theS aturnalia-water, becauseit is too weak for thebody of Gold, but with a water, which has been expressed in thedescription of particulars. This distinction must beexactly observed, being of great concernment, becausetheS alt of Vitriol is not so strongly guarded, and is not in so

fixed a body, as theGold is, but is still an open body, which saw nocoagulation as yet, nor passed it through any melting fire, thereforethatbody never cameas yet to any compactness, thereis roomleft for its ownS pirit to enter into, can embrace, and unitewith its like, and a snowwhiteextraction of S alt may behad, whereas on theother sidea sharpermatter must penetrateGold, as you shall hear, when I shall speak moreof it in its dueplace.Behold now, my friend, whatsoever thou art, what mind I bear towards

thee, and how I amaffected unto theein my heart, thelikeI never durstlook for from thee. Consider it well, how sincerly and faithfully Idisclose unto thee all thy locks and bonds, whereby the wholePhilosophic wisdomis shut up, which hitherto never entered into anymans thoughts, much less that ever it was practised, or discovered; andnothing caused meto do it, but only Gods infinitemercy, my good will

and lovetoward my Neighbour, which my Predecessors havenot donesocompletely, and was put off unto meto do it.Having thus separated your threeMineral bodies, and ordered themintocertain divisions, and put away thedregs, wherein they liehid, then look

to it, that you neglect noneof it, by thediminishing of thequantity, whichwould provea great fault to your work, and keep each in its own and duequantity, otherwisein your work you cannot cometo a happy end. This is thethrist which so many havemissed, and havewritten greatvolumes about it: F or all what comes fromour Philosophic Gold, andhas divided itself into threeparts, thesamemust bebrought into one, without any loss and diminunition, which is to enter into a new formagain, and becomea meliorated substance, and nothing of it must bedone

away, but only theFECES TERRE in which theglorious S alt had itsdwelling. Thereforedo that I told you of, and join theS pirit with thebody, bring thebody also into a S pirit, dissolveand exalt it into thehighest S piritual power, in that dissolution thebody turns to a Spirit, and theS pirit with thebody unites and joins into onesubstance, thatafter theexchanging of all manner of colours, therecomes a whitebodylikesnow, transcending all whiteness. This is thegreatest mystery of this world, about which among the learned and supposed wits, such

disputings in theworld havebeen, that a palpablething, and a visibleonecould bereduced into its PRIMA MATERIA, and out of that maybemade again a new clarified and better substance, by the bountifulnatureleading theway thereunto. Thus you have made and brought into the world the QUEEN  of HONOUR , and thefirst BORN DAUGHTER  of Philosophers, whichafter her due perfection is called the white ELIXIR , of which greatvolumes areextant. Having brought your work thus far, then you have

deserved to bereceived into theTURBA of Philosophers, and you getmoreArt, Wisdom, and understanding than all sophisters, which pratemuch of thesemystical things, and yet know not theleast thing of it. Thereforeit is just that you should bepreferred beforethem, and let themsit below thee in shame and disgrace, and in their darkness of misunderstanding, so long till naturedoes enlighten themalso.

That you may bring and lead that new Philosophical Creatureby themeans nature afforded, unto the highest perfection, after which yourheart with all her endeavours does strive, then remember that neither mannor beast without a living S oul can neither stir nor move: And as man

here in this life, through temporal death loses his S oul, offering thesameagain to theA lmighty God, fromwhomhehad it first, into hismercy and merits of JESUS CHRIST, whereafter thedepartureof theS oul thedwelling, as thebody of it, is left quitedead, which is buried intheground, whereit rots, and must return unto dust and ashes, being adue reward, which the fall of our first parents in Paradise havedeserved, and fromthem, as by an inheritents is fallen upon us:A fter which putrefaction thereareraised again on thegreat day new and

clarified bodies, and thedeparted S oul takes her dwelling up again inthat new body; after that, thereis no moreparting of body nor S pirit, nor S oul; but becausetheS oul finding a clarified body, then with thesameshemakes an everlasting union, which neither Devil nor Death candestroy, nor disjoin any more, nor bring it into any corruption, but fromhenceforth into all eternity we are and shall be like unto the bestcreatures of God, which beforeour mortality and departureof theS pirit,of theS oul and body could never be, God help and grant unto us a

blessed resurrection. AMEN. This high and mighty examplehaving its foundation, not in humanethoughts, wits, or pride, nor in an underground prating but in thegreatCREATORS  true word, which he has revealed unto us through hisSERVANT  and holy prophet MOSES, does inform you, what youought to do further with your new begotten creature, that you may get aperfect birth without any defect, to thepraiseof thehighest, thefather of lights and mercy, from whom we receive all perfect gifts which he

graciously bestowed on his children, for which wearenot ableto returnsufficient thanks unto him.Now if you will proceed well in your work, then join thenew body withhis S oul, which you formerly drew from, that the compound on itsvirtuebe complete, and there be apparent in the end a PLUSQUAM

PERFECTION of it: Then is begotten theRED KING of glory in a

fiery substance, and highly clarified body, exalted aboveall powers uponearth, fromthencesprings thegolden fountain, hethat drinks of it isrenewed in all his members, and thererisen wholly a new life: F or thewhich God bepraised forever more.

Theaugmentation of this hugetreasuretogether with thefermentationthereof, for thetransmutation of Metals doubtless you havetaken noticeof exactly afore, whereI wroteof Gold how it must behandled, andwhat direction I havegiven you, thereunto, thesameyou must observe;for hereis all oneprocess fromthemiddleto theend, thebeginning onlyasks alteration, by reason of thetwo distinct matters: F or thewhichGod bepraised whomwebeseech, to giveus his graceand blessing, thatwemay makegood useof this treasure, and after this lifewemay enter

into theheavenly Kingdom. Theloveof my Neighbour has moved meto writeof thesethings, whichin my long experience I found to be true, following the steps of bountiful nature, which mademea sooth-sayer in natural things, and Iamassured, that if thesemy writings aremadepublic after my death, and my other books sharing in thesame fortune, they must undergomany censures. F or somewill extremely condemn me, delivering meuntoS atan, becauseI havewritten so plainly: Others therewill be, which

will quite overthrow my writings, crying them out to be lies, superstition, and Diabolical works, the likecensure other illuminatedmen beforemehaveundergone, which they feel to this day; for men aresoincredulous in thesepoints, that so mighty an operation should befoundagainst all manner infirmities, besides thetransmutation of Metals inso despicablea matter, (over which theIRON MAN with his espousedwifeVENUS, together with thedeep glittering SOL, is, and must havethepredominancy) and with incredableprofit it should by A rt bebrought

to such perfection. TheArt being great, and thematter so contemptable,it procures themoredoubt and unbelief; Those unbelieving men I letunderstand only this notableexample, whereby theeyes of those, that aregoing untoEMAUS, shall beopened, and thereby shall acknowledgethatI havewritten no untruth, but disclosed such a truth very plainly. Andnote, that the ancient Philosophers endeavoured to describe the

preparation of theS toneunder a notion of distilling of wineand theS pirit thereof, which in their work arealmost likeoneto another. F orthey taught out of thebest wineto makea S pirit, without any strangephlegme, which to this day among vulgar A rtists must be, and is called

the right and truemystical S pirit of wine, whereas it may soon beproved, that this supposed S pirit of wine contains much invisiblehumidity, or phlegmein an invisiblemanner, which is nothing else, butits vegetableMercury; for thefiery S pirit of wineis thetruefireandS oul of the wine. Every S ulphur contains secretly its original andprincipal Mercury: Vegetables in their kind, theAnimals in their kind, and theMinerals also after their kind. They taught how this S pirit of winemust beseparated in two distinct

parts, namely, that this S pirit of winebepoured upon whitecalcined Tartar, and bedrawn over in They taught how this S pirit of winemustbeseparated in two distinct parts, namely, a gentledistillation. I n thisdistillation is separated theS ecret and trueS pirit of wine fromitsVegetable Mercury, as I faithfully informed you in my Manuals.F romtheremaining earth they taught a S alt to bedrawn, to beadded tothe rectified S pirit, whereby it is fortified and strengthened in itssubstance, and at last thePhilosophers S toneshould begenerated. I t is

mightily against Gods ordinance, that a Vegetableshould produceanAnimal, or an Animal producea Mineral. By way of a parable, thepractick part is held forth under thenotion of this preparation. Now as they taught of thewine, so in likemanner also by a short waymay our Gold beprepared (not theusual and common Gold) and may bedissolved, divided, separated, and brought into its first principle. But you must note, that this dissolution and separation was neverdescribed plainly by any of theancient Philosophers which lived before

me, and knew the MAGISTERIUM, why I do it, the love of myneighbours has moved methereunto, which I bear fromthecenter of myheart to all those, which overcamethis mystery without falsehood, andshunning vices with a faithful heart, in a sincereknowledgeand realpiety. I n thefirst placebeinformed, that our Gold (so much spoken of hitherto) must never betaken for such Gold by any of our disciples,

which has been melted, and fully digested by nature, for herein such erroris committed, that men dilapidateall what they have, and looseboth thebeginning and end of all their works. A lthough not onlyfromGold, but fromother Metals also this CLENODIUM, and jewel

may behad, in thepreparation of it, PARTICULARITER  much profitand advantagemay begotten in that, which concerns mens health, as hasbeen formerly told; however, without the S pirit of Mercury theUNIVERSAL of theWorld to begotten meerly fromthebody of SQL,is impossible, and will beimpossible, unless theCreator of all thingsproduceanother ordinance, to changeand alter his creatureafter his ownwill. But as that is impossible, so is it impossiblealso, to deal againstGods creaturein that kind, as to find out that wholesomeprofit, which to

your longing desireyou expect, you may believeit for a truth, as Christhimself is, that thePhilosophers S tonewould not beso strange, rare, and unknown a thing, it would becommon to Kings and Potentates, if God would permit it to bemadeof Gold alone, and thethreeJ ewels of infinitefixed virtues hid therein, could behad out of it!My intent is not in this present treatiseto useany prolixity in writing;those that arenot quiteblind, and havetheir eyes open, haveenoughalready to attain unto real knowledge, and command both his mind and

hands, not to pass by theweightiest, and esteemhigh things that areunworthy, and to fall with theblind into thepit, madefor them. To thosethat arereal in their desire for to attain unto A rt and wisdom, andintend to propogatethesamewithout sophistication; and desirein realityto glory in that honourabletruth, you may show a real proof of it in thismanner.I tell thee really for the highest truth, that you may dissolveOUR

GOLD, naturally driven together, in a short way, to bring it to its

PRIMA MATERIA, and is donethus; taketheknown Mineral S pirit,in which our MERCURY, SULPHUR   and SALT  is shut up,containing that Philosophic mystical Gold, pour that GLUTTATIN

upon whitecalcined tartar, thosetwo contrary qualified matters will beTISSING, let themstay together till their contention and strifebeended, and our Gold hideitself invisibly in thevegetableSALT ACRE, or in

the belly of tartar, lute a Helmet to it, distill it at first gently inBALNEO, then increaseyour fire, then HERMES his volatileBIRD

will fly away fromour Gold in that SUBLIMATION, and sit on thehighest

pinnacles of theTemple, looking about which way to betakehimself, butsoon is catched in theRECEIVER , which must bepureand very dry;when you see his flight is but slow, then take the glass out of theBALNEO, set it in ashes, increaseyour fire, then will she fly morenimbly, keep that fireso long till all is comeover, and her brother theRED DRAGON, hiding his redness under a red colour in a whitishfume, will begin to follow after his flying brother. Then ceasewith thefire, thedrops being all fallen fromtheHelmet, takeit off, that which

you find in theRECEIVER , you areto keep as a treasureof mysteries.I n this manner you havegotten wisdom, understanding, and skill, thefundamentals also, and desires of Philosophers; by this short wittyproof you learn and get that knowledge, how this water may besoughtafter, found, and lighted on, and is not to beesteemed a common water, but is that real infallable HEAVENLY WATER , of which at thebeginning I havewritten, and repeated thesametheoftner; which in aspiritual manner fromtheHEAVENS POWER  is poured down upon

theearth, begins and accomplishes thegeneration of all Metals, for thatreason theancient Philosophers called this water MERCURY, but Icall it theSPIRIT of MERCURY.Now if you proceed right in this work, and you know what food andwhat drink to giveto this bird, viz., S ulphur and S alt of Metal, thenyou may attain unto theend of thegreat work, and you may get profitinfinitly PARTICULARITER  many ways; you must note, that this isnot the true Philosophic dissolution, but only one which

PARTICULARITER   performs strange matters, and is aSPECULUM, in which our MERCURY, or SOL, and our LUNA isseen bleaking, which is a present confusion of unbelievingTHOMASES, discovering the blindness of ignorant men. Thedissolution of the three PRINCIPLES  I have described unto youformerly, which is of a slower pace, requiring timeand patience, and an

Page 29: Basilis Valentine

exact intention to make, or bring threeinto one, which work is doneinitself PER SE, without mixing of any heterogeneal matter, only thatwhich lyes hid in it, must do it, for the fountain of salvation is theillumination of theS oul, and theS alt of theclarified body, areall in

that onething, existing fromONE, TWO, or THREE, which must bebrought and reduced to ONE, which is thegolden virtueof all Metals, exalted aboveall powers, together with the EAGLE and white body, which arenowheretogether, but only in this ONE arefound, and in thatwhich is next kin unto it, which knowing Philosophers always held ingreat esteem, but ignorant and blind men despised and disgraced thesame. But those, whoseeyes areonceopened, loveto stick unto much, covet to hidethematter fromwicked men, and study day and night how

theignorant might bekept fromit. Thus I closethis third part. And beforeI begin thefourth part, concerningPARTICULARIA, Imust needs speak something of thePhilosophers VITRIOL, SULPHUR

andMAGNET.My friend, you must note, that this description I makenow of theessenceof Vitriol rests only upon trials made, thevictorious triumph of the highest wisdom came by inheritance from the most ancientPhilosophers unto me, and comes now unto thee, wherein experimentally

it is found, that there is a subterranean MINERAL SALT, calledVITRIOL, which for dyeing of clothes, and many other uses, mencannot well possibly bewithout it, for it carries on and eats through, byreason of its sharpness, which is distinct fromother SALT, in respectof their qualities; for theMINERAL of this salt is strange, of a veryhot and fiery quality, as apparant in its spirit, and contains a twofoldspirit, which is MIRACULUM NATURE, and is not found thelikeinother salts and this salt is an Hermaphrodic among other salts, it is

whiteand red, even as you will haveit, it has an extraordinary medicinalquality, performing things in an incredablemanner. This salt contains a combustible SULPHUR , which is not in othersalts. Therefore in Metallineaffairs touching their transmutation, itperforms morethan others, becauseit helps not only to open some, buthelps the generation of others, by reason of its innate heat. When

Page 30: Basilis Valentine

8/12/2019 Basilis Valentine

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/basilis-valentine 30/56

VITRIOL is separated by means of fire, then its spirit at first comes ina white form, after that therecomes fromits earth a spirit of a redcondition, staying in theearth, thesalt being united with its expelledMercury and S ulphur, can sharpen them; the remainder that stays

behind, is a dead earth, of no efficacy. L et this sufficefor your learningand consider well what theCreator holds forth unto thee, in naturebythis now kindled TERNARIE: F or as you find in Vitriols body threedistinct things, as S pirit, Oil, and S alt, even as you may expect fromits own spirit again (which without themingling of its oil, is drivenfromits matter) threedistinct things, even as you did formerly fromthebody of Vitriol, which deserves very well the name of SPECULUM

SAPIENTIA PHYSICA, held forth purposely to man to view himself.

F or if you can separatethis S pirit of Vitriol, as it ought, then thataffords again unto you threeprinciples, out of which only, without aeither addition, fromthebeginning of theworld thePhilosophers S tonehas been madefromthat, you haveto expect again a S pirit of a whiteform, an oil of red quality, after these two a ChristallineS alt, thesethree being duly joined in their perfection, generate no less than thePhilosophers great S tone; for that white S pirit is meerly thePhilosophers Mercury, thered oil is theS oul, and theS alt is that true

Magnetic body, as I told you formerly. As fromtheS pirit of Vitriolis brought to light thered and whitetincture, so fromits oil thereismade VENUS her tincture, and in the Center they are much distinctasunder, though they dwell in onebody, possessing onelodge; it mattersnot, for thewill of theCREATOR  was so, to hidethat mystery fromunworthy men; observeand consider it well, if so beyou intend to beatruefollower of Philosophers; in this knowledgelyes hid a irrecoverableerror, worldly wits cannot conceiveof it, that theS pirit of Vitriol, and

theremaining oil should beof so great distinction in their virtue. Touching their properties, theS pirit being well dissolved, and broughtinto threePRINCIPLES, Gold and S ilver only can bemadeby it, andout of its oil only Copper, which will beapparent in a proof made. Thecondition of theS pirit of Vitriol, and its remaining oil is this, thatwherethereis Copper and I ron, theSOLAR SEED commonly is not

Page 31: Basilis Valentine

8/12/2019 Basilis Valentine

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/basilis-valentine 31/56

far fromit, and again wherethereis seed of Gold at hand, Copper andI ron is not far fromit, by reason of its attractiveMagnetic quality andlove, which they, as tinging spirits in a visiblemanner continually bearoneto another. ThereforeVENUS andMARS arepenetrated and tinged

with thesuperabounding tinctureof Gold, and in themthereis foundmuch moreROOT of theRED TINCTURE, than in Gold itself, as Imadefurther relation of it in my other books, unto which therebelongsalso the MINERA  of VITRIOL, which goes beyond these in manydegrees, because its S pirit is meer Gold and RUBEDO, a crudeindigested tincture, and in very truth (as God himself is) is indeed notfound otherwise. But this S pirit, as you heard, must bedivided intocertain distinct parts, as into a S pirit, S oul, and body, theS pirit is the

Philosophical water, which though visibly parted asunder, yet can neverbeseparated RADICALLY, (becauseof their unavoidableaffinity theybear, and haveoneto another) as it appears plainly, when afterward theyarejoined, theonein their mixtureembraces theother, even as a Magnetdraws I ron, but in a meliorated essence, better than they had beforetheirdissolution. This is thefirst, beginning, middle, and end of thetotal Philosophicwisdom, affording riches and health, and a long life, it may rather be

said, and really proved, that this S pirit is theessenceof VITRIOL,because the S pirit and oil do differ so much, and were never unitedRADICALLY, because the oil comes after the S pirit, each can bereceived apart: This fiery S pirit may rather and morefitly becalled anessence, S ulphur, and substanceof Gold, and it is so, though it lyeslurking in VITRIOL as a S pirit. This golden water, or S pirit drawn from Vitriol, contains again aS ulphur and Magnet, its S ulphur is theANIMA, an incombustible

fire, theMagnet is its own S alt, which in theconjunction attracts itsS ulphur and Mercury, unites with the same, and are inseparablecompanions. F irst in a gentleheat is dissolved theundigested MercurialS pirit, by this is further extracted, after a Magnetic quality, theSULPHUREOUS ANIMA, in that earth sticks the S alt, which isextracted also in a Magnetic way by theMercurial S pirit, so still the

oneis a Magnet unto theother, bearing a Magnetic loveoneto another,as such things werethelast together with theMEDIUM is drawn forthby thefirst, and arethereby generated, and thus taketheir beginning. I nthis separation and dissolution the S pirit, or Mercury is the first

Magnet, showing its Magnetic virtuetoward theS ulphur and S oul, which its QUASI MAGNES  attracts, this S pirit PER MODUM

DISTILLATIONIS  being absolved and freed, shows again itsMagnetic power toward theS alt, which it attracts fromthedead earth;after theS pirit is separated fromit, then theS alt appears in its purity;if that process befurther followed, and after a trueorder and measuretheconjunction beundertaken, and theS pirit and S alt beset togetherinto thePhilosophic furnace, then it appears again, how theheavenly

S pirit strives in aMagnetic way to attract its own Salt, it dissolves thesamewithin XL

days, bringing it to an uniformwater with itself, even as theS alt hasbeen beforeits coagulation. I n that destruction and dissolution appearsthehugest blackness an ECLIPSE, and darkness of theearth, that everwas seen. But in the exchange thereof a bright glittering whitenessappearing, then thecaseis altered, and thedissolved fluid waterish S altturns into a Magnet; for in that dissolution it lays hold on its own

S pirit, which is theS pirit of Mercury, attracting thesamepowerfullylikea Magnet, hiding it under a formof a dry clear body, bringing thesameby way of uniting into a deep coagulation and firmfixedness bymeans of a continued fire, and thecertain degrees thereof. TheKing with thewhitecrown being thus generated and by exiccation of all humidities being brought to a fixed state, then is it nothing else, butearth and water, though theother Elements behid therein insensibly;however, both these keep the predominance, though the S pirit turn to

earth, and can never beseen in a watery form, and this doublenew bornbody abides still in its M agnetic quality; for as soon as its departedS oul is restored after its whitefixation, then likea Magnet it attractsthe same again, unites with it, then are they exalted to their highesttinctureand RUBEDA, with a bright transparentness and clarity.

Thus in brief you have a short relation of Vitriols, S ulphur, andMagnet. Pray to God for grace, that you may conceiveright of it, put itthen to good use, and bemindful of thepoor and needy.A t theclosing I annex this briefly, to hold forth unto you a natural

proof, that you presently fling and throw down theSOPHISTER , andtakehis S cepter fromhim. Note, that fromall metals, especially fromMARS and VENUS, which arevery hard and almost fixed metals, of each apart can bemadeaVITRIOL; this is thereduction of a metal intoa M ineral; for M inerals grow to Metals, and metals were at firstMinerals, and so M inerals arePROXIMA MATERIA of Metals, butnot PRIMA; fromtheseVitriols may bemade, other reductions, namelya S pirit is drawn fromthemby thevirtueof fire.

This S pirit being driven over, then there is again a reduction of aMineral into its S piritual essence, and each S pirit in its reductionkeeps a Metallic property; but this S pirit is not the PRIMA

MATERIA.Who is now so gross and absurd, that should not beableto conceivefurther and believe, that by thesereductions fromoneto theother therebea way to PRIMA MATERIA, and at last to theseed itself, both of Metals and Minerals; though therebeno necessity to destroy Metals,

becausetheir seed in theMinerals is found openly fixed.O good God, what do theseignorant men think, is not this a very easie, and Childrens likelabour? Theonebegets theother, and theonecomesfromtheother, is therenot bread baked of corn, upon distinct works? But theWorld is blind, and will beso to theend of it; thus much at thistime, and commit theeto theprotection of theHighest.

common S alt, entered together into a sweetness; this tinctureof SOL islikea transparent RUBIE, leaving a whitebody behind.Note, that without information you cannot attain unto the S pirit of S alt, if it be not sweet, it has no extractive power; to the attaining

hereof, observe these following manuals; take good S pirit of S alt, dephlegmed exactly, driven forth, in that manner, as you shall hear anon. Takeonepart of it, add half a part to it of thebest S pirit of wine, whichmust not haveany phlegm, but must bea meer S ulphur of wine, andmust beprepared in that manner, as I shall tell you anon; lutea helmetto it, draw it over strongly, leavenothing behind; to theabstracted putmoreS pirit of wine, draw it over, somewhat stronger than you did thefirst time, weigh it, put a third timemoreto it, draw it over again, well

luted, putrifiethis for half a month, or so long as it besweet, and it isdone in Balney very gently; thus the S pirit of wine and S alt isprepared, lost it corrosity, and is fit for extracting. TaketheRuby-red prepared Gold powder, put of this prepared S pirit of S alt and wine, so much that it stand two fingers breadth over it, set it ina gentleheat, theS pirit will bered tinged, this red S pirit must becantedoff, pour a new S pirit on that which remained on thebottom, set it lutedinto a gentleheat, let it betinged deeply, then cant it off, this work must

be iterated, that the body of SOL  remain on the bottom like CALXVIVE, which keep, for therein sticks yet moreof theS alt of Gold, whichis effectual in ways of Medicine, as shall beshown anon. Thosetinged S pirits put together, abstract themgently in BALNEO,therewill beleft a red subtilepowder in thebottom, which is thetruetinctureANIMATED, or S ulphur of Gold, dulcifie it with distilledrain water, it will bevery subtil, tender, and fair. Takethis extracted S ulphur of S OL , as you weretaught, and as much

of S ulphur of MARS, as you shall hear anon, when I treat of MARS;grind themtogether, put it in a pureglass, pour on it so much of S piritof Mercury, let it stand over it two fingers breadth, that thematter in itmay bedissolved, seeto it that all dissolveinto a Ruby-likeGold-water, jointly driveit over, then is it one, and wereat first of onestem, keep itwell, that nothing of it evaporate, put it to separated SILVER CALX,

being precipitated with pureS alt, and afterwards well edulcorated, anddried, fix it together in a fiery fixation, that it sublimeno more; then takeit forth and melt it in a wind-oven, let it streamwell, then you haveunited Brideand Bride-groom, and brought theminto Gold of a high

degree: Bethankful to God for as long as you live.I should givefurther direction, how this extracted soul of SOL shouldbefurther proceeded in, and to makeit potable, which ministers greatstrength, and continued health unto men. But it belonging untoMedicinals, I delay it to that place, wherefurther mention shall bemadeof.A t thepresent I will speak only how thewhiteSOLAR  body shallfurther beanatomized, and that by A rt its MERCURY VIVE, and its

SALT may beobtained. Theprocess of it is thus: Takethewhitebody of SOL fromwhich you havedrawn its ANIMA, reverberateit gently for j- hour, let it becomecorporeal, then pour on it well rectified honey water, which is corrosive, extract its S alt in a gentleheat, it is donein ten daysspace, the S alt being all extracted, abstract the water from it inBALNEO, edulcoratetheS alt with iterated distillings, with commondistilled water, clarifie it with S pirit of wine, then you have SOL

AURI, of which you shall hear more in its dueplace, of the good

qualities it has by way of Medicineupon man. On theremaining matterpour S pirit of TARTAR , of which in another place, becauseit belongsunto Medicinals; digest thesefor a months time, driveit through a glassretort into cold water, then you havequick Mercury of SOL, many striveto get it, but in vain. There is one mystery more in Nature, that the white SOLAR   bodyhaving oncelost its ANIMA, may betinged again, and brought to bepureGold, which mystery is revealed to very few: I shall givea hint of

it, that you may not grumbleat meto haveconcealed any point in thework.I hopeyou haveconsidered and taken to heart, what I haveentrustedyou withal about theUniversal S toneof Philosophers in my third part, namely how it rests meerly upon thewhiteS pirit of Vitriol, and how

Page 38: Basilis Valentine

8/12/2019 Basilis Valentine

that all threeprinciples arefound only in this S pirit, and how you areto proceed in, and to bring each into its certain stateand order. TakethePhilosophicSULPHUR , which in order is thesecond principle, and is extracted with theS pirit of MERCURY, pour it on thewhite

body of theKING, digest it for a month in a gentleBALNEO, then fixit in ashes, and at last in sand, that thebrown powder may appear, thenmelt it with a fluxing powder made of SATURN, then will it bemalleable and fair Gold, as it was formerly, in colour and virtuenothing defective. But note, theS alt must not betaken fromtheSOLAR  body, of which Imademention formerly, in a repitation of theXII Key, whereyou mayread of it. Theremay beprepared yet in another manner a transparent

Vitriol, fromGold in thefollowing manner. Takegood AQUA REGIS madewith S al armoniac, onepound, ID

EST, dissolvefour ounces of SALMIAC in AQUAFORT, then youhavea strongAQUA REGIS, distill and rectifieit often over thehelmet, let noFECES stay behind, let all that ascends betransparent. Then takethinly beaten Gold rolls, cast formerly throughANTIMONY, put theminto a body, pour on itAQUA REGIS, let it dissolveas much as it will,or as you can dissolvein it; having dissolved all theGold, pour into

someoil of TARTAR , or S alt of TARTAR , dissolved in FOUNTAINWATER , till it begins to hiss, having donehissing, then pour in againof theoil, do it so long that all thedissolved Gold befallen to thebottom, and nothing moreof it precipitate, and theAQUA REGIS clear up. Thisbeing done, then cant off the AQUA REGIS  from the Gold calx, edulcorateit with common water, eight, ten, or twelvetimes; theGoldcalx being well settled, cant off that water, and dry theGold calx in theair, wheretheS un does not shine, do it not over a fire, for as soon as it

feels theleast heat it kindles, and great damageis done, for it would flyaway forcibly, that no man could stay it. This powder being ready also, then takestrong Vinegar, pour it on, boil it continually over thefirein agood quantity of Vinegar, still stirring it, that it may not stick unto thebottom, for XXIV hours together, then thefulminating quality is takenfromit; becareful you do not endanger yourself; cant off that Vinegar,

Page 39: Basilis Valentine

dulcifie the powder, and dry it. This powder may be driven PER

ALEMBICUM without any corrosive, blood-red, transparent and fair, which is strange, and unites willingly with theS pirit of wine, and bymeans of coagulation may bebrought to aSOLAR body.

Do not speak much of it to thevulgar; if you receiveany benefit by andfrommy plain and open information, be thus minded, to keep thesemysteries secret still to thy dying day, and makeno show of it, elsethouart naked and lay open to the Devils temptations in all thy ways;thereforepray giveattention to what I shall tell thee, for I will impartunto theethis ARCANUM also, and entrust theeupon thy consciencewith it. Takegood S pirit of winebeing brought to thehighest degree, let fall into

it somedrops of S pirit of TARTAR , then takethy Gold powder, put toit three times as much of the best and subtilest common flowers of S ulphur, grind thesetogether, set it on a flat pan under a MUFFLE,giveto it a gentlefire, let theGold powder bein a glowing heat, put itthus glowing into theS pirit of wine, cant off theS pirit of wine, dry thepowder against a heat, it will beporous. Being fried, then add to it againthree parts of FLORES SULPHURIS, let them evaporate under aMUFFLE, neal theremaining powder in a strong heat, and put it in

S pirit of wine; iteratethework six times; at last this Gold powder willbeso s soft and porous as firmbutter, fry it gently, becauseit nealseasily. Then takea coated body, which in its hinder part has a pipe, lutea helmet to it, apply a receiver, set it freely in a strong Capel, let yourfirst firebegentle, then increaseit, let thebody bealmost in a glowingheat, then put in thesoftened well dried Gold powder, being madewarm, behind at thehollow pipe, shoot it in nimbly, therecomeinstantly reddrops into thehelmet, keep thefirein this degreeso long, till nothing

more ascends, and no more drops fall into the receiver. Note, in thereceiver theremust beof thebest S pirit of Wine, into which thedrops of Gold areto fall. Then takethis S pirit of wine, into which theGold drops did fall, put itin a pellican, seal it Hermetic, circulateit for a month, it turns then to ablood-red stone, which melts in thefire likewax; beat it small, grind

among it LUNAR CALX, melt themtogether in a strong pot, beinggrown cold, put it in AQUA FORT, thereprecipitates a black calx; meltit, then you find much good Gold, as theGold powder and S pirit of winetogether with themoyety, and theaddedLUNAR CALX did weigh,

but onemoyety of theLUNAR CALX is not tinged, theother is as goodas it was to beused. I f you hit this rightly, then bethankful to God; if not, do not blameme, I could not makeit plainer unto thee. Now if you will makethis Vitriol, then takethepowder formerly made, boiled in Vinegar, pour on it good S pirit of common S alt, mingled withS alt peter water, and theS pirit of S alt of Niter, this S alt peter wateris made, as AQUA TARTARI  is made with S altpeter; Gold isdissolved in this water; which being done, then abstract thewater to a

thickness, set it in a cellar, then thereshoots a pureVitriol of SOL, thewater which stays with theVitriol must becanted off, distill it again toa SPISSITUDE, set it in the cellar, more of the Vitriol will shoot, iteratethis work as long as any Vitriol shoots. I f you areminded tomake the Philosophers S tone out of SOLAR VITRIOL, as somephantastic men endeavour in that way, then befirst acquainted and askcounsel of thy purse, and prepare ten or twelve pounds of thisVITRIOL, then you may perform the work very well, and the

HUNGARIAN Vitriol, and others digged out of mines will permit theeto do it. You may extract fromthis Vitriol also its S ulphur and S alt, with S pirit of wine, which being all easiework, it is needless to describeit.

but you may prepareeverything from, or of their first essence, and bringthemto their full perfection.

therehas been mention of it in several places in my other books) becauseit is to no purpose for novices, and to repeat all, would increase thevolume, which I do not intend, purposing only to elucidatesuch things, which formerly havebeen delivered in obscureterms.Note, SATURN  is not to be thus slighted by reason of its externaldespicableform, if hebewrought in a dueprocess after thePhilosophersway, heis ableto requiteall thepains theArt-seeking labourers bestowon him, and will acknowledgehimrather to betheL ord, and not the

quantity of thebest S al A rmoniac, sublimed thricewith common S alt, stop theglasses mouth very closely, that nothing evaporate, set theglassin ashes of a gentleheat, otherwisetheS pirits of theVinegar and S alA rmoniac ascend, and touch the S aturnal lamins, at the tenth, ortwelfth day you will spy a subtile Ceruse hanging on these lamins, brush themoff with a hares-foot, go on, get enough of this Ceruse, provided, you buy good wares, if sophisticated, you labour in vain, Takea quantity of it, if you please, put it in a body, pour strong Vinegar on

it, which several times has been rectified, and was fortified at thelastrectification with a sixteenth part of S pirit of vulgar S alt, dephlegmed, and drawn over; stop thebody well, or which is better, lutea blind-headto it, set thebody in ashes to bedigested, swing it often about, in a fewdays theVinegar begins to look yellow and sweet, at thefirst, iterateit athird time, it is sufficient. The remnant of the Ceruse stays in theBODIES bottomunshapely, filter thetinged Vinegar clearly, that is of atransparent yellowness; put all thetinged Vinegar together, abstract two

parts of it in BALNEO MARIE let thethird part stay behind, this thirdtimepart is of a reasonableRUBEDA, set theglass in a very cold waterthen theCrystals will shoot thesooner, being shot, takethemout, with awooden spoon, lay themon a paper for to dry, theseareas sweet asS ugar, and areof great energy against inflamed symptoms; abstract theVinegar further in BALNEO, in which theCrystals did shoot, set thatdistillation aside, for theshooting of moreCrystals, and proceed withtheseas you did formerly.

Now takeall theseCrystals together, they in their appearancearelikeunto clarified S ugar, or S altpeter, beat themin a Mortar of Glass, orI ron, or grind themon a Marbleunto an unpalpableness, reverberateitin a gentleheat, to a blood likeredness; provided, they do not turn to ablackness. Having themin a S carlet colour, put themin a glass, pouron a good S pirit of JUNIPER , abstracted fromits oil, and is rectified

several times into a fair, white, bright manner, lutetheglass above, set itin a gentleheat, let theS pirit of J uniper betinged with a transparentredness likeblood, then cant off neatly fromthe FECES  into a pureglass; with that proviso, that no impure thing run therewith, on the

FECES  pour other S pirit of J uniper, extract still, as long as anyS pirit takes thetincture; keep theseFECES, they contain S alt. Takeall thesetinged S pirits together, filter them, abstract themgently inBALNEO, thereremains in thebottoma neat Carnation powder, whichis the ANIMA  of SATURN, pour on it rainwater, often distilled, distill it strongly several times, to get off that, which stayed with theS pirit of J uniper, and so this subtile powder will be edulcorateddelicately; keep it in a strong boiling, cant it off, then let it go off neatly,

let it dry gently, for safetys sake, reverberateit again gently for its betterexiccation, let all impurity evaporate, let it grow cold, put it in a viol, puttwiceas much of S pirit of Mercury to it, which I told you of in thethird part of the UNIVERSAL, entrusted you upon your consciencewith it, seal it HERMETIC, set it in a vapourous bath, which I prescribed at thepreparation of theS pirit of Mercury, calledthe Philosophers FIMUS EQUINIJS, let it stand in the Mysticalfurnacefor a month, then theANIMA of SATURN closes daily with

theS pirit of Mercury, and both becomeunseparable, making up a fairtransparent deeply tinged red oil; look to thegovernment of thefire, benot to high with it, elseyou put theS pirit of Mercury as a volatilespirit to betakehimself to his wings, forcing himto thebreaking of theglass; but if thesebewell united, then no such fear look for, for onenatureembraces and upholds theother. Then takethis oil, or dissolvedANIMA of SATURN out of theviol, itis of a gallant fragrancy, put it into a body, apply a helmet to it, luteit

well, driveit over, then S oul and S pirit is united together, and fit totransmuteMercury precipitated intoSOL. Theprecipitation of Mercury is donethus; takeonepart of theS pirit of S alt of Nater, and threeparts of Oil of Vitriol, put thesetogether, castinto it half a part of quick Mercury, being very well purged, set it insand, put a reasonablestrong fireto it, so that theS pirits may not fly

away, let it stand a wholeday and night, then abstract all theS pirits, then you find in thebottoma precipitated Mercury, somewhat red, pourtheS pirits on again, let it stand day and night, abstract it again, thenyour precipitatewill bemorered than at first, pour it a third timeupon

it, then abstract strongly, then your precipitate is at the highestRUBEDO, dulcifie it with distilled water, let it strongly beexiccated. Then take two parts of this precipitated M ercury, one part of thedissolved S aturnal Oil, put these together, set it in ashes, let all befixed, not onedrop must stick any whereto theglass. Then it must bemelted with due additionals of lead; they close together, afford Gold, which afterward at thecasting throughANTIMONY may beexalted.I haveinformed you hereof whereI treated of MERCURY VIVE. But

note, that Mercury must not be precipitated, unless with pure oil of VITRIOL, or oil of VENUS, with theaddition of theS pirit of S altNiter: A lbeit such Mercury cannot bebrought to its highest fixation, byway of precipitating, but its fixed coagulation is found inSATURN, asyou heard.Beat theabovesaid Mercury small, grind it on a stone, put it in a viol, pour on it thedistilled S aturnal oil, it enters instantly, if so beyouproceed right in theprecipitation, seal theviol, Hermetically, fix it in

ashes, at last in sand, to its highest fixation, then you haveboundMercury with a trueknot, and brought himinto a fixed coagulation, which brought its form and substance into a melioration, with anabundanceof riches, if you carry it on a whiteprecipitate, then you getonly silver, which holds but littleof Gold.Onething I must tell theeabout this process, that thereis yet a betterway to deal upon SATURN, with moreprofit, that you may not haveany causeto complain against my not declaring it, takeit thus; taketwo

parts of theabovesaid dissolved oil, or of theSATURNAL S oul, onepart of ASTRUM SOLIS, and of ANTIMONIAL SULPHUR , whosepreparation follows afterwards, two parts, half as much of SALT of MARS, as all theseare, weigh themtogether, put all into a glass vial, letthethird part of it beempty, set it in together to befixed, then theS alt of MARS, opens in this compound, is fermented by it, and the matter

Page 50: Basilis Valentine

begins to inclineto a blackness, for ten, or twelvedays it is eclipsed, then theS alt returns to its coagulation, laying hold in its operation onthewholecompound, coagulate it first into a deep brown mass, let itstand thus unstirred in a continued heat, it turns to a blood red body,

encrease the fire, that you may see the ASTRUM SOLIS  to bepredominant, which appears in a greenish colour, likeunto a rainbow;keep this fire continually, let all these colours vanish, it turns to atransparent red stone very ponderous, needless to be projected onMercury, but tinges after its perfection, and fixation all whiteMetalsinto thepurest Gold. Then takeof theprepared fixed red stone, or of’ thepowder onepart, and four parts of any of thewhiteMetal, first let theMetal melt half an hour, and let it bewell clarified, then project the

powder upon it, let it drivewell, and seethat it beentered into theMetal, and theMetal begin to congeal, then is it transmuted into Gold, beat thepot in pieces, takeit out, if it has any slacks, drivethemwith S aturn, then is it pureand malleable. I f you carry it on LUNA, then put moreof thepowder to it then you do upon JUPITER  and SATURN, as half an ounceof thepowder tinges fiveounces of LUNA into SOL, let this bea miracle, fool not thy S oul with imparting this mystery unto others, that areunworthy of it. Proceed withSALT of SATURN, as you were

informed about MARS and VENUS, only distilled Vinegar performsthat, which honey water did by theother, and clarifieit with S pirit of Wine.
