A. See the best of Sydney’s sights by sea.

B. The people of Sydney like getting their feet wet!

C. You’ll enjoy eating in Sydney.

D. The first residents of Sydney were criminals.

E. There is spectacular scenery just outside Sydney.

C Now read the travel guide again and choose which sentence best summarizes paragraphs 1-5.

B Read the travel guide quickly to find out where you would go in Sydney to see the whole city.

1

Sydney, Australia was founded by England as a colony for prisoners. In 1788 the first group of 736 convicts arrived at what is now known as Sydney Harbor. As time passed their numbersgrew and a new community took shape. The government stopped sending people when the Gold Rush of 1851 showed that the threat of going to Australia was actually encouraging crime instead of preventing it!

2

The city is dominated by the harbor, which people have described as one of the most spectacular in the world. There are three things that you must not – and indeed cannot – miss. First, there is Sydney Harbor Bridge, one of the largest single-arch bridges in the world. Second, the Sydney Opera House is a famous landmark that most visitors

greatly anticipate seeing. Finally, don’t miss Fort Denison, where prisoners were kept in solitary confinement for days on a diet of bread and water. The best way to get around is by boat or hydrofoil, both of which have regular services leaving from Circular Quay. If you prefer to do thingsat your own pace, why not hire one of the many boats available for this purpose?

3

Water plays a very big role in the inhabitants’ leisure time. There are 27 miles of beaches to the north and south of Sydney, so it’s hardly surprising that the locals spend so much time in the water! Two of the best -known beaches are Manly Beach and Bondi Beach, where the “beautiful young people” of Sydney have been showing off their skills ever since surfing competitions were first organized there.

4

For those tourists who would also like to see some sites outside of Sydney, the Blue Mountains are well worth a visit. They get their name from the fact that when

you look at them from a distance, they are covered in a blue mist that comes from the small drops of eucalyptus oil in the air. Wentworth Falls and the view from the Scenic Skyway (a cable car high in the sky) are both breathtaking.

5

However, if you don’t have the time – or the desire – to leave Sydney, don’t worry; there’s plenty to do in the city. For the best view of Sydney, visit Center Point Tower. High above the city you can dine in the revolving restaurant, and no seafood lover should leave Sydney without trying our world-famous Sydney Rock Oysters. For the night owls among you, make sure you go to Oxford Street to check out the city’s nightlife.

If you have never been to Sydney before, pack your bags r ight away! We are sure you will enjoy yourselves andhave a very pleasant stay in our city.
