動感挑戰站Move and Play !

無論你是甚麼年紀，身體有多強壯，你都必須依靠腦部去協調各感覺、肌肉、骨骼和神經系統才能流暢地完成每一個動作，如果協調出現失誤，一切動作會變得混亂。「動感挑戰站」是一個充滿歡樂和刺激的展覽，展出20組極富挑戰性的互動展品，除了可讓你大展身手，測試自己身體協調能力之外，還會闡述你參與挑戰時的感覺及心理狀況，從而加強你對自身各種感覺包括視覺、聽覺、觸覺、本體感覺和平衡感覺的認識，與及運動對身體的影響。

今年的夏天，適逢是四年一度的世界盃足球比賽，大家在欣賞足球員的精湛球技之餘，不妨參觀展覽，一顯球技，踢出勁球，又或者化身為守門員，攔截迎面而來的足球。精選展品還有挑戰平衡力的「走鋼線」，考驗身體控制能力的「脈搏探險」和反應能力的「韻律甜甜圈」等！

參觀時大家緊記穿着運動服，在這朝氣勃勃的夏季一起享受動起來的科學！

No matter how old and how strong you are, you need your brain to coordinate the sensory, musculoskeletal and nervous system in order to allow you to move smoothly. If a fault occurs in your coordination, your movements would instantly fall into disarray. "Move and Play!" is an exciting and fun-filled exhibition packed with twenty very challenging exhibits. The exhibits not only give you a chance to show your remarkable physical skills and test your body coordination, but also introduce to you the involved sensory and mental processes. Thus, the exhibits enhance your knowledge about different senses including sight, hearing, touch, proprioception and balance as well as the impact of physical exercise on your body.

With the coincidence of the launch of FIFA World Cup in this summer, why not visit the exhibition while you enjoy the superb skills of football players. You can show off your skill by making a good kick or even pretend to be a goalkeeper to block every football coming in your way. Other amazing exhibits include “Tightrope Walking” that challenges your sense of balance, “Pulse Adventure” that tests your body control capability, and “Disco Donut” that challenges your reaction speed.

Please remember to wear sports shoes, socks and sportswear when you make your visit! Come and take an active part to enjoy science in this summer!

監察香港的城市熱島效應Monitoring Hong Kong's Urban Heat Island

在城市化和溫室效應導致的全球暖化的影響下，香港市區愈來愈熱，令我們感到不舒適；然而，城市化對溫度增高的影響遠比全球暖化趨勢的更為明顯。為了評估香港溫度的變化和熱排放量，香港理工大學土地測量及地理資訊學系利用了搭載在人造衞星的探測器及航空影像就香港的城市熱島效應進行了十多年的監測。研究團隊利用由美國太空總署的地球觀測衞星(Terra)、陸地衞星(Land-sat)以及中國的環境一號（HJ1B），獲取了於夏季晝、夜所拍攝的熱紅外影像，透過這些影像的處理及分析可以對香港溫度分佈的情況有着一個概括的了解。在2013年8月，研究團隊更利用了直昇機拍攝街道及建築物的熱影像，從而獲得更多詳盡的資料來製作立體熱模型，藉此分析不同的建築設計、建材以及規劃是如何影響熱島的形成。在拍攝這些影像時，另一組研究人員則同時在地面上對地表以及大氣溫度進行實地測量，以進行影像校正和準確性評估。藉着全球氣候模型與衞星拍攝影像，研究團隊預測於2040年，香港市區中心溫度將會上升攝氏1至2度。

展覽資料由香港理工大學土地測量及地理資訊學系李真教授及其研究團隊提供，並於2014年6月28日開始展出。

監察香港的城市熱島效應Monitoring Hong Kong's Urban Heat Island

Hong Kong’s urban areas have been getting hotter and more uncomfortable, due to the combined effects of urbanisation and the greenhouse effect of global warming. However, the influence of urban development on these higher temperatures is much greater than the effects of long-term global climate change. The researchers of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, Hong Kong Polytechnic University have been monitoring Hong Kong’s urban heat island using satellite and aerial images for over ten years in order to estimate temperatures and heat emissions over the city. Thermal satellite images, from NASA’s Terra and Landsat satellites as well as the Chinese satellite HJ1B, are captured on hot summer days and nights to give an overview of temperatures across Hong Kong. Helicopter-borne thermography was carried out in August 2013 to provide additional, more detailed thermal information on streets and buildings to help researchers to build 3-dimensional thermal models. These can indicate how different building design, materials and planning practices affect heat island formation. The satellite and helicopter-borne thermal images are supported by a large field team on the ground at the imaging time, measuring surface and air temperatures for image calibration and accuracy assessment. By integrating Global Climate Models with thermal satellite images, the research team predicts an increase of 1-2°C for the core urban areas of Hong Kong by 2040.

Exhibition information is provided by Professor Nichol, Janet Elizabeth and her research team of Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It will be on show from 28 June 2014.

圖一及圖二分別是於22/8/09上午11時9分及17/9/09晚上10時42分，由遙感衞星所拍攝之九龍半島的熱紅外線影像，透過研究這些影像能對香港溫度分佈的情況有着初步的了解。

Figure 1 and Figure 2 are the thermal satellite images of Kowloon taken at 11:9am, 22 August 2009 and 10:42pm, 17 September 2009 respectively. Studying of these images can give an overview of temperature distribution across Hong Kong.

香港科學館為推展博物館教育服務至學校，製作了不同類型的教材，供學校免費借用。教師可以在校內利用本館的展品教材，實踐活動教學，豐富學生的認知。

我們一共提供三套巡迴展覽給學校作教學用途，展覽以中英對照的展板形式製作，主題包括：

以人類腦部結構和功能為主題，揭示腦部神經傳遞信息機制與腦神經疾病的關係。展覽內容適合新高中生物科必修部分「生物與環境」、綜合科學科必修部分「體內平衡」，及組合科學科生物部分「生物與環境」課程。

以視覺感觀為主題，挑戰觀眾的知覺及常識，揭開人類認知的奧秘。展覽內容適合新高中生物科必修部分「生物與環境」及組合科學科生物部分「生物與環境」課程。

以「沙士」及病毒為主題，揭開病毒傳播的途徑。展覽內容適合新高中生物科選修部分「微生物與人類」、綜合科學科選修部分「持守健康」及組合科學科生物部分「健康與疾病」課程。

To extend the Museum’s education services to schools, the Hong Kong Science Museum produces various types of educational kits on loan to schools for free. Teachers can utilise these resources to supplement their teaching in order to enrich students’ knowledge.

There are three exhibitions available on loan to schools. They are produced in the format of graphic panels with English and Chinese texts. Topics include:

1. Brain and Cognition - Exhibits the structure and functions of human brain and reveals the linkage between neural transmission and brain problems. This exhibition is suitable for New Senior Secondary Biology Compulsory Part “Organisms and Environment”, Integrated Science Compulsory Part “Balance within Our Body” and Combined Science Biology Part “Organisms and Environment”.

2. Optical Illusion - Challenges your common perceptions and unveils the mystery of human recognition through illusion games. This exhibition is suitable for New Senior Secondary Biology Compulsory Part “Organisms and Environment” and Combined Science Biology Part “Organisms and Environment”.

3. SARS and Viruses - Demonstrates the pathway of viral infection with SARS and some typical viruses as examples. This exhibition is suitable for New Senior Secondary Biology Elective Part “Microorganisms and Humans”, Integrated Science Elective Part “Keeping Ourselves Healthy” and Combined Science Biology Part “Health and Diseases”.

第四十七屆聯校科學展覽The 47th Joint School Science Exhibition

年輕人充滿熱誠、追尋理想和夢想，及對未來充滿憧憬；而歷史悠久的聯校科學展覽，為每位為科學而奮鬥的中學生提供一個追夢的平台。

聯校科學展覽籌備委員會在過去47年來都致力向本地學生推廣科學，並透過有趣而具挑戰性的活動，從而引起大眾對科學的興趣。在每年八月舉行的聯校科學展覽更是着重鼓勵本地中學生互相合作，更邀請外地學生參與和交流，讓各地學生能在比賽中一展所長、互相切磋。在比賽過程中，籌委會更會邀請大學教授指導參賽同學，以提高參賽者展品的水準，務求令參展隊伍於展覽中展示他們費盡心思而製成的參賽作品。

常言道：在家千日好，出外半朝難，家看似是最安全的地方，但其實在我們家居中也隱藏着一定的危險性；有見及此，第四十七屆聯校科學展覽籌備委員會把本屆的主題定為「家」，希望透過是次比賽，讓參賽者運用其敏銳的觀察力和創意，改善市面上的家居用品或創造新發明品以提升家居生活質素。

為了更全面地推廣科學，籌委會早於數月前已舉辦了多項切合本年主題的活動，包括初中學生活動Eureka，以「科學」和「家」為主題的關卡遊戲，啟發初中學生對科學的興趣及潛能，鼓勵他們以創新的科學意念改善居住環境。另外，籌委會亦會在七月初舉辦偵探遊戲，透過引人入勝的故事情節，向大眾推廣聯校科學展覽。

本年度聯校科學展覽為期六天，將於八月二十二日至二十七日於香港銅鑼灣中央圖書館地下展覽廳舉行，屆時將有來自其他國家、本地大學及二十六間本地中學的代表隊伍展出他們的參賽作品。展覽免費入場，歡迎公眾人士參觀。

兒童肥胖與社會及城市環境的關係 Childhood Obesity and Social-physical Environment

肥胖不但影響兒童身心健康，而且兒童期肥胖及其相關的不良行為習慣往往會持續到成年期而導致長期病患。大量研究證實，適當的體力活動及合理的營養是維持正常體重的必要條件，但各種因應兒童運動不足和不良飲食習慣的干預措施往往收效甚微或難以持續。近年來，社會及城市環境研究的發展為探索兒童肥胖問題提供了新的視角。社會生態模型認為，兒童肥胖及其相關行為方式（如體力活動不足）的出現與家庭、社會及城市物理環境有着密切的關係。然而，這類研究成果目前多來源於環境空間較廣闊的歐美國家，香港有着獨特的城市環境及社會文化，這些因素又以怎樣的方式影響着本地兒童的肥胖問題？本講座將結合本地的科研成果，介紹社會及城市環境如何影響兒童體力活動水平，繼而探索各種預防兒童肥胖的新措施。

典型的「發展」模式經常以改變大自然和清除現有社區的「障礙」來保證經濟的增長。然而，可持續的建築環境並不是征服大自然；相反，是要與它共存，以突出天然的景觀及其生態功能。真正可持續的建築環境，在於設計和規劃是否以培育健康的社區，深厚的人際關係和豐富的本土特色為目標。建設可持續發展的建築環境是一項挑戰，須超越經濟的考量，並探索如何能夠與大自然長治久安地和諧共處。

因此，城市的各種基礎建設應該順應生態系統的自然變化，減少資源消耗和增加市區的生物多樣性。這些都需要新技能和新的城市管理思維，因此亦會為地區提供新的就業機會。本土經濟活動不但可以維持個人和家庭的穩定性，更是社會可持續發展的重要保障。如果再加上地方營造 — 建設通達、舒適、充滿生機和促進社交的空間 — 就更能加強這些社區的持續發展。

這種「以自然和以人為本」的發展觀正在挑戰現存的制度，需要我們以整全及多角度的思維，以尊重自然和培育人際關係為基本原則，用創新的方法去解決複雜的相關建築環境議題。

水是資源、能源，是包括人在內所有生物生存的根本。充足的可用水源是人類文明發展的的關鍵；然而隨着世界人口的增加和城市化，大量產生的城市生活污水因其高濃度的氮、磷等營養鹽正嚴重威脅著水環境質量，使本已短缺的可用水日益減少。目前集中式的污水處理方式在城市迅速擴張的趨勢中已顯得力不從心，且偏低的回收率造成了資源的極大浪費。研究表明，生活污水中大部分營養鹽來自於尿液。儘管只佔了污水體積的不到1%，尿液卻貢獻了80%的氮和50-80%的磷。因此，將尿液從污水中分離並單獨處理將大大減輕污水處理廠的負荷，提高處理效率。同時，分離出來的尿是一種濃縮的營養液，可直接用於農業生產或資源回收。尿液分離以及相應的污水處理模式是未來城市污水處理的發展方向。本講座將就尿液分離的重要性、可行性、目前的研究進展以及對居民生活和城市發展的影響進行探討。同時，將介紹香港科技大學在尿液分離處理方面所取得的成果：一套因應本港人口密度大、高樓密集型住房並採用海水沖廁等特點而研發的高效低成本的尿液收集、處理及資源回收體系。

運動功能包括各種形式的移動，如爬行、步行、跑步等。對很多人而言，這些動作看似是一件非常容易的事情，但實際上，正常的運動功能原來涉及複雜和精確的平衡控制，及主要身體感覺系統的正常運作。今次講座將會從不同角度探討運動功能和平衡的控制機制，並說明主要的身體感覺系統在調控運動功能和平衡中所肩負的角色。我們亦會探討各種疾病對運動及平衡功能的影響及相關的康復治療的研究發現。

「智能機械由我創 2014」Robotics Intelligence 2014

學生團隊為比賽作準備

「智能機械由我創2014」的比賽題目是於比賽當日即場公佈的，參賽隊伍須在45分鐘至90分鐘的時間內設計、組裝、編程和測試來完成比賽任務。是次比賽已於五月八日於香港科學館舉行，並順利選出冠軍、亞軍、季軍、一等獎、二等獎及三等獎。

「第十六屆香港機械奧運會」The 16th Hong Kong Robotic Olympiad

機械人欖球比賽：同學們全神貫注地控制機械人環保清潔海面機械人比賽 :比賽以兩分鐘為限，參賽隊伍須自行設計能在水中活動的機械人，收集乒乓球（模擬水面垃圾）並放進機體的收集器內。

人型機械人武術比賽 :參賽者須用伺服馬達自行製作一台二足步行的人型機械人，並運用電腦編寫動作程式，務求在格鬥場上將對手擊倒。

手搖發電機械人背泳賽：各參賽隊伍在作比賽前的最後檢查

第十六屆香港機械奧運會已於五月二十四日在香港科學館舉行，參賽隊伍利用自製的機械人進行各項別開生面的比賽，包括機械人欖球比賽、人型機械人武術比賽、手搖發電機械人游泳比賽、環保清潔海面機械人比賽、伺服馬達機械人自由體操比賽及手搖發電機械小黃鴨等多項賽事。
