Society
Set of interdependent people that gather to share a common culture and feeling of unity
Examples:– Italy– America– Mexico
Culture
Consists of all shared products of human groups
Examples– Rules– Religion– Architecture
List 10 elements that make up the American Culture with a person next to you (no need to move your seat)

Project
Using any given culture, research a UNIQUE sport specific to that culture(a sport not popular in America). Be sure to include rules, equipment, objective of game and how it is played.
You will have time to work on this in class today You will present the sport to the class. Please use
props to enhance your presentation.
Section 2 Cultural Variation
There are many differences among cultures which makes it hard to understand those different form us.
If an Australian invites you over for tea and says arrive at 7:00, what time should you arrive and what could you expect to do?
Cultural Variation (Australia)
– Arrive no earlier than 8:00 and expect lamb chops, sausage, French fries, a veggie, salad, and dessert.
Cultural Universals
Features common to all cultures. George Murdock complied 60 cultural
universals.

Dealing with Variation in other societies
Difference are interesting, but often causes problems
Ethnocentrism- one’s use to their way and do not like to accept ways of doing it.– Can avoid a new way that may be beneficial.
Cultural Relativism- judge things by their own standards not using your own bias.
Variation among Societies
Subcultures- cultures that exists with in a culture but follow the norms and values of the larger culture– Example: Puerto Rican, Catholic, teachers,
Counter culture- Exists with the larger culture but goes against the norms and values.– Examples Hippies, KKK, Youth movement of the
60’s
