Do not have a clutch pedal, but has a complex set of combined clutch and "fluid coupling" between the engine and transmission.
After the driver choose the gear via gear level, gear ratios will automatically switch to either increase or decrease according to driving conditions and road conditions.

PARKING - Usually used when parking the vehicle to avoid self-moving vehicle.
REVERSE - Used during a mood reverse to vehicles.
NEUTRAL - Used to release the gear. (gear in free mode)
DRIVE - Used in normal drive.
2 nd - Used in a crowded street when the road curved. shift gear only happens in gear 1 and 2 only
LOCK-UP - Only gear 1 has happens

Role Of Torque ConverterRole Of Torque ConverterServe as automatic clutch with
transmit engine torque to transmission.
Transmit Torque from engine with smoothly.
Absorbs torsion vibration of the engine drive train.

FUNCTION OF ATFFUNCTION OF ATFAct as lubricant in Automatic
Transmission.
To control Lock-Up Clutch opening.
Act as a heat transfer medium from Torque Converter to Engine cooling system.

Integrated with t/converter case.Have many CURVED VANE.Impeller driven by engine
crankshaft and fluid in impeller rotates with it.
When speed of impeller is increase, centrifugal force cause the fluid to outward toward the impeller (out side vane).
![Page 12: Cha pter 3 auto transmission](https://reader034.vdocuments.pub/reader034/viewer/2022052606/5884dbc71a28ab4b778b5127/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

Located in t/converter case, but it mounted to transmission shaft.
Turbine vane is OPPOSITE DIRECTION from impeller vane. it were design to capture the fluid thrust from impeller.
Therefore, torque were transmit to transmission input shaft and turning the same direction with impeller.

Located between impeller and turbine.
It mounted to stator shaft which fix to transmission case.
The vane of the stator catch (collect) the fluid as it leave the turbine and redirects it to back to impeller.

One-way clutch One-way clutch Allow the stator to rotate in same
direction as engine crankshaft. If stator attempt to rotate
opposite direction, the ONE-WAY CLUTCH will lock the stator to prevent it from rotating.

1. Impeller was driven by engine crankshaft, when impeller SPEED IS INCREASE, CENTRIFUGAL FORCE cause the fluid to flow OUTWARD from center of impeller and flow towards the VANE SURFACES (OUTER) of impeller.
2. As impeller speed is rise further, the fluid is FORCE OUT away from impeller to TURBINE.
3. The fluid was strike to the VANE OF TURBINE (OUTER) causing the turbine to begin ROTATING in the SAME DIRECTION as impeller.
4. After fluid DISSIPATES ITS ENERGY AGAINST THE VANE (OUTER) OF TURBINE, it flow inward along the vanes of turbine.
5. When fluid is reach the interior of turbine, the turbine’s curved inner surface (inner vane) direct to VANE OF STATOR,
6. And the cycle was begins again.

To make turbine keep running as long as impeller was running, t/converter must have a fluid flow.
The flow inside t/converter are divide by two:-
i) Vortec flowii) Rotary flow
![Page 22: Cha pter 3 auto transmission](https://reader034.vdocuments.pub/reader034/viewer/2022052606/5884dbc71a28ab4b778b5127/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
VORTEX FLOWVORTEX FLOWIs a SPIRALING FLOW which
continues as long as there is a difference speed between impeller and turbine.
![Page 23: Cha pter 3 auto transmission](https://reader034.vdocuments.pub/reader034/viewer/2022052606/5884dbc71a28ab4b778b5127/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
ROTARY FLOWROTARY FLOWIs a fluid flow which CIRCULATES
with the t/converter body rotation

When rotation speed of turbine almost same with impeller, TORQUE from ENGINE were TRANSMITS to the TRANSMISSION at ratio almost 1;1.
By the way, not 100% TORQUE is transmit to transmission. Approximately 4-5% loss energy during TORQUE TRANSMITS.
The function of lock-up clutch is:-1. To REDUCE LOSS energy during torque transmit.2. To REDUCE FUEL CONSUMPTION.
![Page 28: Cha pter 3 auto transmission](https://reader034.vdocuments.pub/reader034/viewer/2022052606/5884dbc71a28ab4b778b5127/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)

PIC - APIC - A1. When vehicle speeds are below 37 mph ( 60
km/h), the lock-up clutch is disengaged.
2. The fluid pressure travel from RELAY VALVE thought t/converter and to cooling system.
3. Lock-up clutch is DISENGAGED because of fluid pressure around lock-up clutch are same (front and rear).
4. At the same time the DRAIN HOSE is in CLOSE POSITION.
![Page 30: Cha pter 3 auto transmission](https://reader034.vdocuments.pub/reader034/viewer/2022052606/5884dbc71a28ab4b778b5127/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
PIC - BPIC - BWhen the vehicle is running at above 37 mph (60
km/h), the pressure fluid flow into the area to rear of lock-up clutch.
The RELAY VALVE position opens a DRAIN to the area in front of lock-up clutch, therefore created an area of low pressure.
Because of that, lock-up clutch piston is forced against the converter case by difference in hydraulic pressure on each side of lock-up clutch.
So that, the lock-up clutch is rotate together with t/converter case.

Oil seal rings SEAL the fluid between the clutch drum and oil pump stator.
Seals are mounted on inner and outer piston. Relief ball valve is housed in piston body to release
hydraulic fluid when the clutch is released. When the drum was rotates, some fluid remains behind
the piston and centrifugal force cause the fluid flow to the outer diameter of the drum.
Infect that the relief ball valve was close the relief valve to prevent from fluid flow to inner clutch set. Then the clutch set was engage with each others.
When speed were decrease, the pressure also drops, centrifugal force cause the Ball move away from the valve seat.
Its allowed the fluid escape and flow into the clutch set, it’s cause the clutch set were disengaged.
