Lesson 4: What is an Adverb?
An adverb is a word that modifies (or describes) a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
Explorers eagerly chase adventure.
Some explorers visit amazingly beautiful places.
Others quite bravely explore the unknownspace.
Adverbs answers the questions: HOW, WHEN, WHERE, TO WHAT EXTENT
How? Suddenly, Carefully, Sadly
When? Now, Later, Soon
Where? There, Up, Ahead
To What Extent? Completely, Totally, Fully

Adverbs can appear in different positions in sentences:
The tourists boarded the bus eagerly. (After Verb)
The tourists eagerly boarded the bus. (Before Verb)
Eagerly, the tourists boarded the bus. (At Beginning)
Adverbs that modify adjectives or other adverbs usually come directly before the words they modify. They usually answer the question 'to what extent?'.
Marco Polo told really wonderful tales of China.
People were very eager to hear his stories.

Underline each adverb and draw an arrow to what it modifies. Label the word modified V, Adj., or Adv.
1. Thomas Jefferson became very curious about the West after he took office as President.
2. He studied maps and explorers' journals quite often.
3. He soon asked Meriwether Lewis to explore the new territory of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase.
4. In preparation for the trip, Lewis quickly learned many skills.
5. On May 14, 1804, Lewis, William Clark, and a team of explorers headed West.
