Endowment Sub-committee. While both the Community Chest and the College serve the Hong Kong community, Mr. Chen points out the dierence between the two: charity provides immediate assistance to the needy, while the College aims at nurturing the future pillars of society. With his experience in asset management, what are the elements most important in investment for Chung Chi? “We take a cautious and long term approach in making investment for the College. We want to minimize risk, but at the same time we must satisfy the long term needs of the College. How to allocate assets (between currencies, bonds, stocks, funds) so as to minimize volatility and yet provide a decent return, what to buy/sell and when to action, they are topics constantly being studied and discussed within the investment sub-committee, which is under the Finance Committee.”

The College, Mr. Chen adds, is also embarking

on renovating its “hardware” and improving its “software”, an initiative he totally supports. Chung Chi has a history of 65 years during which established a great reputation and high ranking. However many of its buildings are getting old and facilities dated, especially in comparison with the newer colleges. Plans must be made to update them. At the same time, additional resources must be given to enlarge or improve student programmes and activities. “Campus life is not limited to academic studies. Extracurricular activities are important as well. Hopefully the ultimate result of this development eort is the creation of an environment attractive to the best students, enticing them to choose and commit to Chung Chi, not just for the school years, but their entire life. Our students will be oered a fruitful and memorable campus life which will enhance their all-round development.”

Although the College has established various endowments with the support of many benefactors in the past, they are not sucient for the development of the hardware and software described above. In Mr. Chen’s opinion, the endowment funds on hand are meant to support the current student activities, the operating costs of the College and any unforeseen one-o expenditures in the future. Funding for new projects have to come from other sources and contributions. In this regard, Mr. Chen is optimistic that if the College were to start fund raising campaigns, they would receive positive responses. “We have a 20,000 plus alumni base at present. We should seek assistance and support from

them. At the same time we need to oer a rich, pleasant and memorable campus experience to our students so that one day they will too return as loyal supporters.” Making Chung Chi a home to students and increasing their love and loyalty have been, and will be, one of the main missions of the College.

Although Mr. Chen is not a graduate of the College, he does feel the friendly atmosphere here at Chung Chi, just like other sta members and students. “Occasionally we have heated discussions in meetings. However, whenever that happens, we listen to and understand each other, and usually succeed in searching for the best solution. Chung Chi is founded in accordance with Christian traditions. I think I experience such spirit here even though not all our students are Christians.”

When asked whether he has any advice to the collegians on philosophy for life, Mr. Chen pondered and said, “Be positive and always be considerate, and never take yourself too seriously (i.e., don't think you are God’s gift to man.) Acting this way and you will have more friends in school, allies at work and support after retirement. You will be a lot happier.”

Acting just as what he believes in, Mr. Chen has many friends and acquaintances. After retirement from his banking profession, Mr. Chen’s schedule is still packed – there are always activities with friends, such as lunch gatherings, holiday trips, and invitations to concerts or rounds of golf, etc. He is also busily engaged in voluntary work such as this position as the Treasurer of the College. Although this Treasurer position is an unpaid one, nonetheless he will always do his utmost to discharge his responsibilities. He is a loyal non-alum Chung Chi-er.

Although this Treasurer position is an unpaid one, nonetheless he will always do his utmost to discharge his responsibilities. He is a loyal non-alum Chung Chi-er.
