Greetings WUM Members!

Happy Circle K New Year! For those of you I have yet to meet, my name is Five Yang and I am your 2015-2016 District Governor. One of the many reasons I love Circle K so much is the passion we share to serve and make a difference in our communities. It is that passion that drives us to work hard and dedicate any amount of free time to service. As a college student like all of you, I know how busy our lives can be with school, work, and a social life. Yet everyone is able to dedicate any time they have to do service. Your actions speak so much about your character and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to serve you this year.

I am very excited to meet everyone. I firmly believe that our district is home to the most amazing members of Circle K. It is all the hardworking members in the district that motivates to be your governor. The service, leadership, and fellowship I see everyday is simply outstanding. Whether it is giving up your precious time to tutoring elementary students or choosing to spend your weekend at Spring Fling to meet other members, your dedication does not go unnoticed.

I look forward to work and to get to know each and everyone of you this upcoming year! As your governor, I am here to support all the members and clubs in our district to grow and to reach new heights. I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish this year as a district!

Why I LOVE Circle K: Circle K was a huge part of my college experience and I want to give back to this wonderful organization. I know I say WUM Circle K is special and it really is! I encourage everyone to go to CKIx this year and discover just how unique our district is. (Shameless plug :))

My favorite service project: Camp Wawbeek is the happiest place on earth so doing projects and fundraising for camp is number one.

What I can do for you: Help connect Circle K clubs with their Kiwanis clubs, help Circle K clubs connect with the Circle K district, answer questions, attend events (I live in Iowa so it would have to be weekend events) and provide support, encouragement and ideas. If you need something just ask.

My favorite service project: My home Kiwanis Club’s sponsorship of Hudson Hero's. Mentoring grade school kids as they plan and execute a service project.

What I can do for you: Watch and listen; be there when I am needed.

Why I LOVE Circle K: I love CKI because of the amazing difference that college students make in the lives of others through various service projects and fundraisers. It is incredible to watch students become strong leaders as a part of the organization, and beyond graduation, make an impact in the world, in their professions, as well as in everyday life.

My favorite service project: Some of my favorite service projects are the ones that I get to do at Camp Wawbeek each spring and fall. Whether that is painting the walls of one of the buildings, getting the pool ready for the summer season, raking leaves, doing a bit of maintenance to the elevated pathways in the woods, or trimming the trees along many of the twisting roads at camp, it is always a fun time!

What I can do for you: I want to provide a helping hand wherever it is need, give advice that will solve a problem, and hopefully be able to inspire members of the District Board and clubs with that extra motivation which leads them to doing great things.

Why I LOVE Circle K: As a member of Circle K, I am surrounded by selfless members who are dedicated to serve their communities. I believe that everyone in Circle K has shaped me to become a better person. It is an absolutely honor to be able to call all these kind-hearted members my friends!

My favorite service project: Shelter from the Storm (dog walking)

What I can do for you: My job as governor is to work for the members and provide support as much as I can. I am more than happy to assist members and clubs in any way that I can. Don't be afraid to ask me questions! In addition, I love meeting new people so say hi to me when you see me or add me on Facebook :)

Why I LOVE Circle K: I love CKI because of all the great people gathering together for the single purpose of serving.

My favorite service project: My favorite service project is working with kids with math and science.

What I can do for you: As an LTG, I will be serving as a liaison between the district level and the club level of Circle K. Within Capital Division I will be able to assist with ANY questions you may have about District and Divisional events. I also will be assisting in the arrangements of interclubs and leading the Divisional Rallies. If you have a question just email me and I will be more than willing to help!

Why I LOVE Circle K: I love helping people, volunteering, and I really love the fellowship and social aspects as well. It's a great feeling of belonging and acceptance.

My favorite service project: So far I've really enjoyed every service project, but if I had to choose just one it would be when we helped at the Tri-County Safe Harbor during Winter Weekend Get-Away.

What I can do for you: I'm going to be there for them, honor my commitments, and help them with whatever they need. I might not

Why I LOVE Circle K: I love Circle K because it gives me the chance to meet tons of incredible people while giving back to the community-and it’s so much fun!

My favorite service project: My favorite service project is UWEC Circle K’s Habitat for Humanity. If it wasn’t for that trip, I wouldn’t be involved with the District board. I met so many great people and got the chance to travel to somewhere I might have never gone to otherwise.

What I can do for you: I’m here to help with any questions you may have! (Especially about the Kiwanis family!) If you need help contacting someone, or don’t know if there are Kiwanis/Key/Builders/K-Kids/Aktion Clubs in your area, I can figure it out and let you know whom to contact to set up a visit!

Why I LOVE Circle K: At a university where service is one of the founding principles, it is often easy to overlook service as just another thing, or a routine, but with CKI, I feel like every event is a new experience with new people who genuinely appreciate our help. Not only that, but the people I have met through CKI have been some of the nicest, most accepting and encouraging people I have ever had the pleasure of getting to know in my life.

My favorite service project: Rest and Respite (Playing games and hanging out with children who have special needs while their parents take a night off)

What I can do for you: As district webmaster, I hope to be able to share photos of district events on our website to shed light on the wonderful service projects going on in our district, as well as be present as a resource for any questions that may arise about district information and event times, locations,

themes, etc. I am very dedicated to helping the members of this district grow, and am willing to assist to the best of my abilities. I look forward to working with as many members as I can throughout the year!

What I can do for you: My job as Subregion C Trustee is to serve as a resource for members of CKI! I have office hours from 8-10 PM Central time on each Thursday, and I can answer any questions members have about what is going on at the international level of CKI!

Apply for District Convention Chair

If you enjoy planning large-scale events, then this may be the position for you! As DCON Chair, you would have the opportunity to plan the 53rd Annual District Convention that will be held in Green Bay the weekend of March 4th – 6th in 2016. Although it can be a heavy workload, seeing the convention come together will be absolutely rewarding!

Kiwanis Family and Outreach Committee Do you love Circle K? What about the other branches of the Kiwanis Family? Do you wish you knew more about them, or that you could help in getting the branches to know each other better? Join the Kiwanis Family Relations and Outreach Committee! As a member of this committee, you’ll help plan and promote the Kiwanis Family Baseball Game in August, Hockey Night in December, and Service Day in November. This is a great opportunity to meet the other members of the Kiwanis Family and provide them with opportunities to get to know each other. Special Events Committee My name is Stephanie Van Kampen, and I am the new District Special Events Chair! In addition to planning Spring Fling this month, it’s also my job to plan the Membership Awareness Conference (MAC) in October and assist in the planning of the Membership Education Recruitment Program (MERP) over the summer. As part of the District Special Events Committee, you’ll have the opportunity to help brainstorm and plan the fine details of these District Events! If you love planning big events and have a lot of ideas that you’re eager to share, this committee is for you! Membership, Development, and Growth Committee If you have an interest or passion for membership recruitment and retention, the Membership Development and Growth Committee is perfect for you! This committee is important because its focus is to spread helpful recruitment/retention tips and ideas to Circle K clubs throughout the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan district. What's great about being on a committee is that it does not require a huge time commitment yet, you're getting more involved in Circle K! Fundraising Committee (NEW TO THIS YEAR) My name is Taylor Moret and I am the Fundraising Chair for the district. As fundraising chair, my committee will focus on…you guessed it – FUNDRAISING! If you have creative ideas and love to make money, I want you on my committee! It's all about new ideas. We will be the go-to resource on ways that they can boost their club's income or raise money for a noble cause. I love brainstorming and coming with new and creative ways to do things. Together, we can bounce ideas off of each other and also generate new ones! And as my one of my favorite quotes says "Someone can't do everything, but everyone can do something." Super Service Spring Fling Preview By Stephanie Van Kampen

The Wisconsin-Upper Michigan’s next big District Event is almost here! Held from April 24th to 26th, the superhero and villain-themed Spring Fling, located at Camp Wawbeek in the Wisconsin Dells, is a “super” conference that will give Circle K’ers a weekend full of Service, Leadership, and Fellowship!

Clubs will arrive Friday evening and participate in fun service projects like writing letters to troops overseas, making thumb buddies for kids in hospitals, and more! It’ll be a breeze getting to know other members during the icebreakers, photo scavenger, and traditional trip to Denny’s that will also take place on Friday night! Starting Saturday morning, you’ll find that “not all heroes wear capes” when we do service projects that will help prepare Camp Wawbeek for their summer campers’ return. Following a tasty lunch, you’ll get to choose from a number of fun, engaging workshops to attend, where you’ll learn more about the different aspects of Circle K! To name a few: CKI 101/K-Family, Recruitment, DIY Crafts, and, of course, Superhero Jeopardy! And if you’re an elected officer of your club, there is a workshop for you!

After workshops, you’ll have the opportunity to join and meet with one of the district committees (you can even see them highlighted in this issue of the Circle of Sharing!). Saturday night will consist of school skits, the mascot auction, and options later on to attend the “Dance Your Cape Off” dance, watch a superhero movie (to be determined!), or roast marshmallows over the campfire.

Sunday morning will be filled with packing up, giving away the coveted Club Spirit Award, and saying goodbye to new friends. The best part about Spring Fling is that it’s an enjoyable, laid-back weekend that incorporates service projects and leadership, while making it easy to have fun and meet so many other Circle K’ers. We hope to see you there for this fun-filled weekend!

Madison Monica Wang

Henry Vilas Zoo's busy season is just starting up, and they were in need of volunteers to come help clean up the grounds. Kiwanis One Day in Madison was a huge success, with around 57 Kiwanis Family members from Key Club, Circle K, and Kiwanis working together to rake leaves, mulch gardens, scrape paint, and other general clean up jobs. After around 3 hours of service, we enjoyed a lunch together that was funded by the Monroe Kiwanis Club. Thank you to all the participants and everyone else involved in making this event successful!

Milwaukee Jim Tammen

On April 11, the Metro-Southeast Division united in a day of service and fellowship. Members of Kiwanis Club of Milwaukee, Temper High School Key Club, and Circle K members from Milwaukee School of Engineering, Alverno College, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, and Marquette University scoured Milwaukee for service.

Members brightened the day of children on the South Side at the Boys and Girls Club, performed some spring-cleaning at the pond at Washington Park, and served coffee in solidarity to those in need on the West Side. The stories brought home were many: members of Temper reconstructed a broken toy airplane for a child who dropped it on the concrete, Alesia Milliner pulled clothes out of a Washington Park pond (which begs the question of where our skinny dipper had run off to), Jessi Reid learned the ins and outs of Xbox gaming from an 8 year old, and poor Teasha faced down her 10 year old ping pong opponents valiantly, but alas the fight was over before it began. Members returned with stories to share and empty bellies. They shared a meal of Jim’s questionable pasta, and Sprecher root beer (a Milwaukee tradition - even though it is made in Glendale). The day winded down with discussion of the years many achievements and ended in lessons of Circle K traditions including the Wobble, and the Yooper Dance.

We volunteered at the Big Event for Little Kids for Kiwanis One Day. Circle K members were there to assist and step in for people who needed breaks. The majority of the day was spent on a concrete mixer truck. While on the concrete mixer, Circle K member Mikayla got to help kids up into the driver seat so they could pretend to drive it and get some great pictures, then they would come to the back with Dani where they would have the opportunity to get up and look inside the actual mixer. They also were able to help at a stand that showed the power of gravity and magnets while drawing in the sand. Both areas were super fun to work in and we had an absolute blast, as did the kids. !

For Kiwanis One Day in Escanaba, MI, members from Builder's Club, Key Club, Circle K, Aktion Club, and Kiwanis came together to help with the 58th annual Escanaba Kiwanis Pancake Day. They helped to make the pancakes, serve drinks, and assisted with a 50/50 raffle.

Kiwanis family clubs in the Eau Claire area joined for a day of service at two locations: the Eau Claire Children's Theater and the Bolton Refuge House. At the Children's Theater we did any and everything they had available. We washed walls to be painted, helped move set pieces to their proper places in storage, organized the fake flowers, put together a tree, cleaned up outside the building, and dismantled set pieces. At Bolton Refuge House we worked on outdoor cleanup (raking, garbage cleanup, etc.). Following service, we met at the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp at Carson Park (which is sponsored by our Noon Kiwanis Club!) for lunch, where everyone brought something to include in the meal.

About the Governor’s Project: Serving the Children of WUM

By Five Yang In honor of the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis International, my governor’s project will have our district focus on serving the children of WUM, since serving the children of the world is Kiwanis’ mission. I intentionally selected a project that is broad for two reasons. First I want us to be able to serve as many children as possible in our community.

Second The needs of children vary by location, so I do not want some clubs to feel as though they can’t participate in the project by making it too specific. Examples that would count as serving children include, but are limited to: children’s hospital, children’s museum, reading to children, tutoring, and cleaning parks. One more thing I would like all clubs to observe is the Universal Children’s Day on Friday, November 20th, 2015. I also encourage clubs to work with and reach out to the K-Kids and Builders’ Clubs around them. I promise to work hard to assist clubs in finding projects and

I cannot believe that I have published our first Wisconsin-

Upper Michigan District Bulletin for the 2015-16 Circle K year! I

am so excited to share this bulletin with you all since it is about

and by all of you! As the District Bulletin Editor this year, I hope

that I will serve you all well in this position.

With that being said I want to hear from every single one of you; I want your feedback, articles,

pictures – any and all of it! I want to share your accomplishments with everyone, so they can

celebrate with you. Please, use this bulletin as a resource for information and for publication. This is

YOUR bulletin.

If you have any ideas of things you want to see, or if you want to contribute, please do not

hesitate to contact me. All I ask, as have all of the previous bulletin editors, is that you plan ahead if
