- La larga historia evolutiva de las bacterias, que ha permitido la exploración de los más diversos medios, se pone de manifiesto en su extraordinaria variedad de capacidades metabólicas.- Algunos procariotas sólo pueden realizar un metabolismo anaerobio porque el oxígeno les resulta tóxico. Los anaerobios facultativos pueden vivir tanto en condiciones aerobias como anaerobias; algunos de ellos no tiene la capacidad de realizar la respiración celular, pero no les perjudica la presencia de oxígeno; otros, en cambio, pueden alternar entre un metabolismo anaerobio (como la fermentación) y la respiración celular, según sean las condiciones del medio.

- Aeróbicas. Los enzimas respiratorios están incorporados a la membrana celular.- Anaeróbicas . El aceptor final de los electrones es una molécula inorgánica como el nitrato, el sulfato o el dióxido decarbono, que son reducidos, respectivamente, hasta nitrógeno, ácido sulfúrico y metano.- Fermentadoras . Realizan una oxidación incompleta de los combustible metabólicos, siendo los productos finales orgánicos. Dependiendo del producto final, que no es útil para la bacteria y se acumula en el medio, se distinguen las fermentaciones alcohólica, láctica, butírica y propiónica.
