3December 2005 TEJB9190 Cat D6R Series III and D6R Series II Track-Type Tractors

Introduction

Since its introduction in 1996, the Cat D6R Track-Type Tractor has maintained leadership in its class.

The new D6R Series III builds on that reputation by retaining the most valued features of the R-Series

while offering new improvements and features. These improvements and features provide enhanced

performance, reliability, durability and productivity – bringing a whole new level of value to Caterpillar

customers.

Engineered for demanding work, the D6R Series III is designed to be productive in a variety of

applications ranging from heavy dozing, ripping, pushing scrapers and land clearing, to finish grading,

backfilling trenches and working in landfills. The D6R Series III will keep material moving with the

reliability and low operating costs that customers have come to expect from Caterpillar machines.

The D6R Series III meets the latest worldwide emissions standards for the U.S. Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA) and the European Union (EU) and will compete in the 119-142 kW (160-190 hp) EMI class

for standard configurations and 142-194 kW (190-260 hp) EMI class for XL/XW/LGP configurations.

Productivity

Slot Dozing

Eighteen pits were staked out, each 6.1 m (20 ft) wide and 30.5 m (100 ft) long. The 30.5 m (100 ft) cut

was broken down in the following way:

0–6.1 m (0–20 ft): Transition into pit

6.1–24.4 m (20–80 ft): Load material24.4–30.5 m (80–100 ft): Transition out of pit

An additional length of 30.5 m (100 ft) was provided at the exit of each pit for the carry portion of the

cycle. Space was provided at the end of the carry segment for the dump portion of the cycle.

Both the D6R Series II and Series III cutting edge angles were set to 58 degrees.

Cycle times were recorded while the tractors dug the test slots. Each tractor was operated for six slots.

The slots were then cross-sectioned to determine the volume of material moved using an independent

surveying company. Using cycle times and volume of material moved, productivity was calculated.During the tests, both machines were operated in first gear for forward dozing and were shifted into

second gear for the carry and return segments.

Side Banking

Following slot dozing, a side-banking operation was performed. Passes were made down each side of

the slot, completing one side before beginning the other. The blade was loaded as fully as practical, and

material was carried to the stockpile created during the slot doze operation. PAT blades were not angled.

The tractors were operated in first gear during the dig portion, a shift to second gear was made during

the transition area, and second gear was used for the carry and return.

Slot Backfill

The stockpile generated in the slot doze and side-banking operations was used for backfilling. Passes were

made on each side of the pile. The blade was loaded and the material was carried back into the slot.

The material was spread in the slot and was not compacted. The entire stockpile was moved back inside

the staked slot during this operation. Tractors were operated in first gear during the loading cycle andwere shifted into second gear for the carry and return. PAT dozers were not angled during this operation.

Trench Backfill

A sweeping trench backfilling operation was also performed. Trenches were created 30.5 m (100 ft) long

and 1.8 m (6 ft) wide. The stockpiles were placed in a relatively uniform manner next to the trench.

The tractors traveled parallel with the trench at the beginning of each run and swept the material into the

trench at the correct point. This was repeated the entire length of the trench until the trench was backfilled.

Three of the pits were filled turning left and three were filled turning right. Cycle times were recorded

during each run. The D6R Series II and III were operated in second gear for forward and reverse.
