In 1997, Asarcos MissionComplex in Arizona installedwhat is potentially the worldslargest crushing facility as thekey to the mines waste trans-port system. This comprisestwo complete Sizer Stationseach with MMD 1500 SeriesMineral Sizer, MMD D9Heavy Duty Apron PlateFeeder in a Natural Groundhopper. Prior to this, the mineoperation had been analysed using Modular Minings Dispatch com-puter simulation which resulted in a truck and shovel requirementbeing established for the life of the mine, approximately 24 years.

This new system assisted in Missions goal to lower production expen-diture through overcoming the factors of deeper pits and higher over-burden to ore ratios that would increase costs. Missions MMD 1500Series Twin Shaft Sizers were designed for a maximum rock size of 3.0x 3.0 Metres with each of the two units having a production capacity of10,000 tph and the ability to produce a conveyable product of 350mm.While the true capacity of the machines has proved to be well in excessof this, the system is restricted to 8,600 tph by the conveyor belt capac-ity. Each of the two Heavy Duty Apron Plate Feeders manufactured byMMD is located in a Natural Ground Hopper developed in a benchhighwall such that two 240 ton trucks can dump simultaneously fromthe bench above. The sized material is then taken away by a 3.5 km con-veyor system. Each complete Feeder/Sizer station is a semi-mobile unitdesigned to take advantage of the mines existing crawler transporter.
