Published by Gaither High School, a Hillsborough County Public School, and Gaither PTSA Volume 11, Issue 2 October 2015 Dear Gaither Families, We are a few weeks into the school year, which began very smoothly. Our new freshman class and new students have become familiar with our campus and have acclimated well to the "Gaither" way of life in a short time. All class orientations have been held and high academic expectations and how to achieve them have been communicated to our students, faculty, and staff. I told our students that I expect each one of them to graduate from high school and to eliminate the barriers in life which hinder this process. A high school diploma is the stepping stone for the next transition in our students' lives as they become independent, young adults. I challenged them to take rigorous coursework, such as honors and advanced placement classes, to prepare them for college. We have students who are interested in joining the military and the workforce right out of high school. We have several programs available to help and support each of our students' needs. I encourage all of our parents and students to follow us on Twitter@gaithercowboys. We are up to 717 followers and climbing each day. Several of our graduates continue to follow us to stay connected with their school. I follow several organizations, businesses, and community agencies which are important in helping and supporting not only our students, but our parents, community members, and teachers as well. As a parent of a first year college freshman, as well as a high school sophomore, I find a lot of helpful information to share with my own children, spouse, and others, such as ACT/SAT testing tips and how these assessments measure college and career readiness, best colleges to attend, the latest advanced placement and collegeboard information, financial aid, and many others. I post information about the wonderful accolades which our students receive throughout the year, as well as give updates about how our athletic teams and organizations are progressing. I know several of our seniors and families are waiting to hear when graduation day and rehearsal will be announced. As soon as our dates have been approved by the school board, we will disseminate the information. I know that planning for your senior's big day is important. The planning begins when your child is a freshman, as they begin to "build" their high school transcript and meet graduation requirements. Please stay connected to your child's teachers and check Edsby to follow their progress. Emails are the best way to contact the teacher and a list of their names can be found on our new and improved website at gaither.mysdhc.org if you need them. Hard copy progress reports will be distributed on Tuesday, September 22 and our first conference night will be held on Thursday, September 24. Please don't forget to join PTSA if you have not done so, sign up to assist at one of our events or help out where needed through our PTSA, athletic, band, or music booster clubs. They need you! Lastly, The Gaither High School teachers, staff, and community pay their respects and give condolences to the family and friends of retired teacher and Gaither administrator, Mr. Henry Strapp, who passed away recently. Mr. Strapp was a very outgoing gentleman who supported students, teachers, staff, and parents and motivated those he touched. He will be missed by many. Birthday Marquee

Welcome to the Fall Gaither families!

We hope everyone had a great transition into the new school year and all of our new students and families are beginning to experience the many wonderful things that Gaither has to offer!

Gaither PTSA is in full swing as we have already had many opportunities for students & parents to get involved. Some of the many activities we have been working on so far this year include: preparing and distributing our back to school newsletter; hosting a welcome back breakfast for our teachers; participating in Freshman and New Student Orientation as well as Open House; sponsoring a Spirit Event at Chick Fil A; selling lockers, parking decals, and PE uniforms to the students; selling spirit wear and Splash Bash

tickets; serving students at the Principal’s Honor Roll Ice Cream Social; and hosting dinner for our teachers at the first Conference Night. Thank you to each and every volunteer that contributed through time or donations in order to ensure all these activities have gone smoothly and been a great success. We would also like to thank some of our local businesses that have been supportive of our PTSA so far this year: Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, Applebee’s, Beef O’ Brady’s, Bonefish Grill, Chick Fil A, Holy Hog Barbeque, Mekenita Mexican Grille, and Winn Dixie.

Thank you to all of the parents, teachers and students that have already joined our PTSA this year. We are off to a great start with our PTSA membership goals and are confident that we will exceed those goals during this school year. Your support of the PTSA is the only way we are able to provide the many programs and events for the students and teachers, and we know that you want to be a part of that support as well. Membership forms are always available in the Main Office and can be turned in any time along with your payment of $10 per member. We are going to have our first membership incentive coming up, so every student will want to turn in their membership forms in order to participate. So, look for those posters around school for details!! We are looking forward to working with you and hope that you will take advantage of the many opportunities to get involved here at Gaither. You won’t regret it!

Cowboy Express The Cowboy Express is an academic achievement incentive program at Gaither High School sponsored by the PTSA. It is divided into 2 categories: Blue and Silver. A Blue Cowboy Express Card allows a student to attend home athletic games free of charge and purchase dance and qualified event tickets at a discounted price. A Silver Cowboy Express Card also allows a student to attend home athletic games free of charge, but it provides free and/or more heavily discounted admittance to dances and qualified events.

During the Fall Cowboy Express application period that took place at the beginning of the school year, there were 175 students that submitted an application. Of those applications, 64 students earned Silver Cowboy Express and 92 students were eligible for a Blue Cowboy Express card. Congratulations! Students should have received their Cowboy Express cards through their 2nd period class the week of September 28th. Please check with your teacher if you have not yet received your card.

A Cowboy Express Card is good for one semester only. A student must apply each semester. The Spring 2015 application period begins on February 15th. Applications will be accepted for one week and are due no later than February 19th. Late applications will not be accepted. The application is available to print at www.GaitherPTSA.org. Guidance News TIPS FOR SUCCESS

The Counselors have visited recent freshman and

sophomore class meetings to share information

regarding the importance of earning good grades in

high school. Students were advised to complete

every assignment, on time, every day, and hand it in

to their teachers. They know to visit the Guidance

lobby and sign-in “the book,” if they want to see their

counselor. Their counselor will send a pass for them

in class within a three-day period.

    GRADE QUESTIONS

After viewing Edsby, if parents have a question about

a grade, teacher’s names appear on your student’s

schedule. To contact a teacher, email addresses are

    configured as follows:

    [email protected]

(note the dot between first and last names)

Please note that teachers do not have access to phones

in their classrooms, so using email will result in a

    faster response!

    GRADE POINT AVERAGES (GPAS)

Students (and their parents) may see their GPA by

accessing Guidmii at www.guidmii.com. Your user

name and password is the same as the one used for

Edsby. Grade Point Averages are updated at the end

of each semester, and appear on February and June

report cards. Freshmen will only have a GPA this

fall if they took high school credit courses during

    middle school.

    TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY

When your student has an issue at school, (i.e.

requests for second semester schedule changes,

    difficulties understanding assignments, questions

about applying for college) it is suggested that

parents encourage them to handle it themselves.

Even though parents would like to solve all of their

teenagers concerns for them, learning to navigate the

proper channels is a necessary life-long skill.

Students have been told to use the Guidance Office

“book” to sign-up to see their School Counselor.

    TESTING

    The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT and

National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a

scholastic assessment test given once a year in

October. All college bound juniors, sophomores, and

freshmen should take the PSAT. By taking the

    PSAT/NMSQT, a student can:

    practice for the SAT I

    enter scholarship competitions (Juniors only)

tell colleges to send you information about

    programs, activities, and financial aid

find out if you have the reading and math skills

you'll need to succeed in college

The PSAT will be administered at Gaither on

Wednesday, October 14th, at approximately 8:00

a.m. All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will take the

    test free of charge!

    TRANSCRIPTS

Seniors need to send transcripts to colleges and

universities as part of their application process. They

should complete a “Transcript Request Form” in the

Guidance Lobby and give it to our Registrar, Mrs

Perez. Transcripts are sent to most public institutions

electronically for free. For private or out-of-state

schools there is a $2.00 fee per transcript to cover

    mailing costs.

ACT and SAT test scores do not appear on the

transcript, and need to be ordered separately from

    www.act.org and www.collegeboard.com.

The SAT Reasoning Test is a verbal, math, and

writing test administered by the College Board. It

should be taken by college bound juniors and seniors.

A good score on this test is important because it is a

major factor in college admission. Students may

    also register on-line at www.collegeboard.org.

Students must put Gaither's high school code

101738 and their social security number on the form

when registering. The SAT is offered 7 times a year

at various locations. “Taking the SAT," is a booklet

which contains test taking tips and practice SAT tests.

It is available in the Guidance Office.

The ACT is a college placement test battery that

includes English, math, reading, and science

reasoning, with an optional writing exam. It should

be taken during the junior or senior year in high

school. The ACT registration booklet and the

practice test may be picked up in the Guidance Office

or on-line at www.act.org. Students must again

record the high school code 101738 and their social

security number. The ACT is offered 6 times a year

    at various locations.

GHS Orchestra Our first Concert of the 2015 school year is fast approaching and our students have been practicing hard and

preparing some beautiful music for your enjoyment. This concert will feature the Orchestra, Guitar and Band

Program and is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Gaither High School

Auditorium. Please plan to come and support the Gaither Instrumental Music Program!

The Gaither High School Orchestra will be participating in a unique opportunity on October 1 - 3, 2015. A

group of 70 students and 8 chaperones will be going to Jacksonville and Tallahassee to perform with the

Jacksonville University Orchestra and the Florida State University Philharmonic Orchestra. During this

exciting trip the students will take campus tours and meet with admissions & financial aide counselors.

Students will also have the opportunity to study with the Music Faculty at F.S.U. as well as the Principal

    players of the Jacksonville Symphony.

On Thursday, October 1st at 7:30p.m., the students will take the stage at Jacksonville University where they

will play Serenade for Strings by Norman Leyden and Hungarian Dance No.5 by Brahms. The Gaither High

School students will have the honor of being the first to participate in a side-by-side concert series with the

    Jacksonville University Orchestra.

In addition, the students will take a tour of our State Capitol and the Florida Museum of Natural History. We

are very excited about this trip and our upcoming school year.

If you are interested in helping to support the students of the Gaither Orchestra program, we are currently

selling Butter Braids as a fundraiser. You may purchase them from any orchestra student and help them earn

money for their trip. If you are interested in making a donation you may write a check to Gaither High School

and write “Donation - GHS Orchestra” in the info section. I thank you in advance for your support of the GHS

    Orchestra Program!

that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for

people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver, Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that has grown

from one original chapter to almost 1,900 middle school, high school, and college chapters worldwide. Best

Buddies programs engage participants in each of the 50 United States, and over 50 countries around the

    world.

Best Buddies’ eight formal programs — Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Citizens, e-Buddies®, Jobs,

Ambassadors, and Promoters — positively impact nearly 900,000 individuals with and without disabilities

worldwide. Best Buddies volunteers annually contribute, at no cost to their communities, support services that

equate to more than $168 million USD.

The Gaither High School Best Buddies is one of the largest service clubs in Hillsborough County. Last year

our chapter brought in close to $7000 for the Friendship Walk and this year we hope to raise $7500.

Best Buddies Champion of the Year Best Buddies Champion of the Year is an annual twelve-week fundraising competition organized by the Best

Buddies' Tampa Bay staff, Event Committee and Advisory Board, featuring a select group of individuals,

professionals and community leaders prominent in the Tampa Bay community. These philanthropic

trailblazers compete to raise the most funds for Best Buddies Tampa Bay and to earn the ultimate title of

    Grand Champion of the Year.

Betty Headrick, whose daughter Heather graduated from GHS last year, has teamed up with Anne Marie

DeVita, a current GHS student, to raise awareness of people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

and the wonderful Best Buddies organization which helps them overcome social isolation.

Betty has donated many hours of her time for 4 years coordinating the Gaither Marching Cowboys dinner

program and has always been involved in her daughter Heather's school donating her time to help children.

She needs your support to reach her goal to become Grand Champion. For those of you who do not know her

story, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer in January of 2015. She was told she would have as

little as 6 weeks to live if she chose to not fight. Of course she chose to fight! There were some very tough

days (weeks) but with an incredible support system she is still here and doing what she loves best, which is

    supporting programs that help children.

Anne Marie is currently recuperating from open heart surgery that she underwent at the beginning of this

school year. Many people are unaware of the physical problems children with Downs Syndrome endure.

Anne Marie is a very brave girl and is healing well from her surgery. Anne Marie's brother Peter graduated

from Gaither in 2015 and her sister Theresa is currently a Junior

at GHS. Please donate to help her reach her goal!

Athletic Boosters Athletic Booster passes are for sale. Students have 2 options. Buy a pink punch card for $20 and get into any

10 athletic events. This makes your ticket cost $2 per event instead of $4 (or $5 for Varsity Football). OR buy

a student activity card for $50. This is a one time cost and is good the entire year.

Both cards may be used for HOME and AWAY Hillsborough County regular season athletic events! This is a

wonderful way to save money and not pay other schools admission fees! Let’s keep all the money at our own

    school site. GEAUX COWBOYS!

What You Should Know About Senior High Athletic Eligibility Academic Requirements If you are in the 11th grade or 12th grade, you must have a cumulative 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 unweighted scale in all courses taken through the end of the previous semester. If you are in the ninth grade or 10th grade, you must have a cumulative 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 unweighted scale in all courses taken through the end of the previous semester; OR you must have earned a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 unweighted scale in the courses taken in the previous semester alone, provided you sign an academic performance contract (FHSAA form EL5) with your school and attend summer school as necessary. (Article 9.4, FHSAA Handbook, Bylaws and Policies) Ninth Grader Eligibility A student shall be eligible during the first semester of his/her ninth-grade year provided that it is the student’s first entry into the ninth grade and he/she was regularly promoted from the eighth grade the immediate preceding year. Residence A student will be eligible at the first school in which he/she enrolls, or participates in an athletic practice, at the beginning of each school year. The student will be eligible in his/her first school of choice each year as long as the student remains enrolled in that school. (Florida Law 97-53) Additionally, home school students who are registered through Hillsborough County Public Schools and charter school students who are enrolled in a Hillsborough County registered charter school are eligible for athletic participation at their school of residence. Transfers If you transfer during the school year from one school to another, you must transfer from your previous school before the first day of practice and secure an “Application for Waiver of the Transfer Rule” (FHSAA form GA4) signed by the principal of both your previous school and your new school. If you transfer on or after the first day of practice in a sport you cannot participate in that sport. If you transfer from a school at which you were ineligible because of disciplinary action or unsatisfactory conduct, you will be ineligible at your new school for one full semester. If you participate on a non-school team [i.e. AAU, American Legion, club settings, etc.] that is affiliated with a school other than the one you attend, or have attended, and then transfer to that school, it will be assumed you have been recruited to attend that school and you will be ineligible there for one year. If you transfer to a school that your head coach or assistant

coach [paid or volunteer] has relocated to within the past year, it will be assumed you transferred to that school for athletic reasons and you will be ineligible there for one year. If you transfer to a school as a result of undue influence exerted by or special inducement offered by anyone associated with the school in an attempt to encourage you to attend the school for the purpose of participating in its athletic programs, you will be ineligible at that school for the remainder of your high school career and at all other FHSAA member schools for one year. (Article 9.3, FHSAA Handbook, Bylaws and Policies) Age A student will be eligible until the day he/she reaches the age of 19 years 9 months. On that day, the student will become ineligible. (Article 9.6, FHSAA Handbook, Bylaws and Policies) Limit of Eligibility A student shall be eligible for no more than four (4) consecutive academic years upon first entrance to ninth grade as defined by the pupil progression plan of the school in which the student is enrolled. Four years from the date he or she first successfully completes the eighth grade, he or she shall become ineligible for further interscholastic athletic competition. A student who does not attend school, repeats any grade, is declared ineligible to participate, or otherwise fails to exercise the opportunity to participate for any reason for any length of time during this four-year period shall not be entitled to any additional period of eligibility. Original school records shall be submitted to the Commissioner in the event of conflicting information as to the date of first successful completion of the eighth grade. (Article 9.5, FHSAA Handbook, Bylaws and Policies) Eligibility Appeals and Request for Due Process When a student is determined to be ineligible by a member school principal and/or is ruled ineligible by the commissioner based upon any provision of these bylaws, the member school principal may appeal the ruling of the commissioner if he/she or the student takes issue with it; or, in individual cases, the member school principal may file a request for undue hardship waiver on behalf of the student when, in his/her opinion, enforcement of the provision(s) which render(s) the student ineligible would work an undue hardship upon the student. The principal is required to file either at the student’s request. For additional information consult Article 10.4 FHSAA Handbook, Bylaws and Policies

Gaither High School Athletic Mission Statement: The Gaither High School’s Athletic Program mission is to engage the mind, elevate the spirit, and stimulate the best effort of all who are associated with the Athletic Program. Gaither’s mission defines expectations both on the field and off. In the name of excellence, Gaither aims for a level of athletic performance that will frequently produce win-ning seasons and the realistic opportunity to compete for team or individual championships. Our mission also requires that Gaither athletes be students first, that they be admitted with careful attention to their academic record and motiva-tion, that they benefit from Gaither’s educational programs and make satisfactory progress toward a diploma, and that their attrition and graduation rates be comparable to those of other students. Objectives:

To give Gaither student body a variety of opportunities to experience the benefits of participation in athletics and to be meaningfully engaged after school hours.

To ensure that student athletes are exposed to positive role models in both coaches and teammates. To maintain a consistency of effort and expectation throughout the entire athletic program. To develop life skills in student athletes including self-discipline, work ethic, motivation, leadership, time manage-

ment, sportsmanship, responsibility, self-esteem and an understanding of the relationship between individual effort and team success..

To enhance the possibilities of student athletes to go on to post secondary education. To contribute positively to school spirit and community pride. Beliefs We believe students are our highest priority.

We believe athletic participation is a privilege not a “right.”

We believe the dignity, worth, and respect of participants should be paramount in all athletic activities.

We believe that great character, personal integrity, and the GHS value system will produce excellence both aca-demically and athletically.

We believe the most important result of competition is the development of “life-long” values and skills.

We believe the athletic program is an integral part of the high school experience.

We believe high school athletics should be fun and rewarding.

We believe athletic programs are most beneficial when they are competitive.

We believe winning is an attitude resulting from loyal preparation, concentrated effort and a deep commitment to excel.

We believe well-designed athletic programs promote community and school pride.

We believe morale, satisfaction, and performance are enhanced when athletes work together as a team.

We believe it is important to participate/volunteer in worthy projects that will help bolster the unity between GHS athletics and its’ community.

We believe well qualified coaches and program administrators are important components in a successful athletic program.

We believe positive parent support and involvement enhance student growth and program quality.

We believe that acting as “ONE” will ultimately allow us to best possible chance to succeed as parents, coaches, administrators, and student-athletes.

Core Values Great “Sportsmanship” should be evident under all circumstance.

“Integrity” is paramount within all decisions made.

“Respect” of authority, time, commitments made, and the game are vital.

    “Character” must be seen…not heard.
