Sometimes, too, when their spiritual masters, such as confessors andsuperiors, do not approve of their spirit and behavior (for they are anxious that all theydo shall be esteemed and praised), they consider that they do not understand them, orthat, because they do not approve of this and comply with that, their confessors arethemselves not spiritual. And so they immediately desire and contrive to find some oneelse who will fit in with their tastes; for as a rule they desire to speak of spiritual matterswith those who they think will praise and esteem what they do, and they flee, as theywould from death, from those who disabuse them in order to lead them into a saferoadsometimes they even harbour ill!will a"ainst them. #resumin" thus,$% they arewont to resolve much and accomplish very little. Sometimes they are anxious thatothers shall reali&e how spiritual and devout they are, to which end they occasionally"ive outward evidence thereof in movements, si"hs and other ceremonies;... relacionado con esto esta el deseo de ser tenido en rande o como santo dal confesor ! por esonunca hablaran de las propias faltas) buscando de ocultarlas.%. 'any such persons desire to be the favourites of their confessors and tobecome intimate with them, as a result of which there beset them continual occasions ofenvy and dis(uiet.$) *hey are too much embarrassed to confess their sins nakedly, lesttheir confessors should think less of them, so they palliate them and make them appearless evil, and thus it is to excuse themselves rather than to accuse themselves that they"o to confession. And sometimes they seek another confessor to tell the wron"s thatthey have done, so that their own confessor shall think they have done nothin" wron" atall, but only "ood; and thus they always take pleasure in tellin" him what is "ood, andsometimes in such terms as make it appear to be "reater than it is rather than less, desirin" that he may think them to be "ood, when it would be "reater humility in them,as we shall say, to depreciate it, and to desire that neither he nor anyone else shouldconsider them of account.*inalmente) la ultima caracteristica "ue nos da san +uan de la ,ru- esla eno&arse ! perder lapa- por las propas faltas(+. Some of these be"inners, too, make little of their faults, and at other timesbecome over!sad when they see themselves fall into them, thinkin" themselves to havebeen saints already; and thus they become an"ry and impatient with themselves, whichis another imperfection. ,ften they beseech -od, with "reat yearnin"s, that .e will takefrom them their imperfections and faults, but they do this that they may find themselvesat peace, and may not be troubled by them, rather than for -od/s sake; not reali&in"that, if .e should take their imperfections from them, they would probably becomeprouder and more presumptuous still. *hey dislike praisin" others and love to bepraised themselves; sometimes they seek out such praise. .erein they are like thefoolish vir"ins, who, when their lamps could not be lit, sou"ht oil from others.$0
