Die geographische Länge und Brei-te geben (zusammen mit der Höhe über NN) die Lage eines Punktes auf der Erdoberfl äche an. Ein wichtiges Hilfsmittel sind dabei Meridiane und Breitenkreise. Unter der geographi-schen Länge eines Ortes versteht man den Winkel zwischen den Halb-kreisebenen des Ortsmeridians und eines Bezugsmeridians (0° – Meridi-an). Als Nullmeridian dient aufgrund internationaler Vereinbarungen seit 1884 der Ortsmeridian durch die Sternwarte von Greenwich bei Lon-don. Meridiane und Breitenkreise werden im Allgemeinen auf Globen und Landkarten nur in ganzzahligen Winkeln eingezeichnet.An einem derartigen Meridian,

on the earth‘s surface. Meridians and lines of latitude are of enormous importance here. The geographi-cal longitude of a place is the angle between the semi-circle levels of the place meridian and a reference meridian (0° – Meridian).As a result of international agree-ments since 1884, the place meri-dian through the Greenwich obser-vatory near London serves as the prime meridian. Meridians and lines of latitude are generally only charted in whole-num-ber angles on globes and maps. Deggendorf-Mietraching is loca-

Die außergewöhnliche Lage hat der Stadt einen zweiten Namen beschert: „Das Tor zum Bayerischen Wald“. Vom Stadtplatz weg, mit seinem brei-ten Straßenmarkt, dem Alten Rathausmit seinem mächtigen go ti schen Turm, steigt das Waldgebirge an. 305 Meter über dem Meeres spiegel ni-vellieren die Kar tografen an den Bür-gerhäusern und dem mit telalterlichen Wehrgang im Zentrum der Stadt. Oben, auf dem Breitenauer Riegel sind es 1114 Meter ü. NN. Welch an-dere Stadt kann mit solchen Höhendi-mensionen aufwarten. Deggendorf has become a centre of industry and commerce in southeas-tern Bavaria. The town is home to companies that provide a link to the world. High-tech made in Deggendorf is a trademark; not a slogan, but rea-lity. The inland free port on the river represents a special cornerstone for the city. Together with Duisburg, it is the only one in Germany.

Die Stadt besitzt neben vielen land-schaftlichen Schönheiten zahlreiche bauliche und geschicht liche Sehens-würdigkeiten. Trotz aller städtebau-lichen Maßnahmen und Sanierungen ist der historische „birnenförmige“, weit ins Mit telalter zurückreichende Stadtgrundriss noch vollständig nach-vollziehbar. Er wird durchzogen von einem breiten Straßenmarkt in des-sen Mitte sich das Alte Rathaus mit seinem mächtigen gotischen Turm (um 1380) erhebt.
Beachtenswert sind die am Treppen-giebel an gebrachten Steinplatten mit bayerischem Wap pen und dem Stadt-wappen aus der Erbauungszeit (1535) sowie die Sohlbänke der Fenster mit den faszinierenden Fabeltieren und Fratzenköpfen. Wichtig sind auch die beiden an Ketten befes tigten Stein kugeln, die an der Südfassade hän gen und ein spätmittelalterliches Strafi nstrument (Schandkugeln) dar-stellen. Sie wurden scherzhaft als “Deggendorfer Knödel” bezeichnet und sind wahrscheinlich auch Anlass zur Deggen dorfer Knödelsage.

Sights
Along with many scenic beauty spots, the city also has numerous ar-chitectural and historical places of in-terest. Despite all the urban building change and renewal that has taken place, the historical „pear-shaped“ ground plan of the city, reaching back to the Middle Ages, can still be traced without effort. It is crossed by a wide street market, in the middle of which stands the old Town Hall with its ma-jestic Gothic tower (around 1380).
Worthy of attention are the stone sl-abs let into the step-sided roof gable depicting various Bavarian and also the town’s coat of arms dating from the time of its building (1535), as well as the window ledges with fascina-ting mythical creatures and grotesque faces. Of importance are also the two stone spheres, held by chains, which hang on the southern facade and are a medieval instrument for punishment (shame spheres). They were jokingly called “Deggendorf dumplings” and are in the background and probably also the reason for the Deggendorf dumpling legend.

Auf dem Friedhof er richtet, ist sie ein Zeichen fürdie Auf er stehung Christi und vor -bildlich für die Verstorbe nen in den Gräbern, die am Tag desJüngs ten Gerichts ebenfalls aufzuer-stehen hoffen. Im Innenraum der Kapelle schließt sich auf der Südsei-te die Grabkammer an. Kapelle und Grabkammer wurden während der

Inside the chapel, to the south, a burial chamber is annex-ed. Chapel and burial chamber were decorated and illuminated during the Easter Days and the Easter message illustrated by a grave, decorated with fi gures. The seven Ways of the Cross were erected approximately in 1697 and are a donation from Caspar Aman. Today, the life-sized fi gures stand by the river at the bottom of the stairs to the top of Geiersberg (Vulture Moun-tain). On the way to the last station, the Calvary Mountain, one passes the Mount of Olives scene. The origi-nal cross was replaced by a cast iron cross in 1830.

Kartage geschmückt und illuminiert, und durch ein fi gürlich ausgestatte-tes Grab die Oster botschaft illustriert.Die sieben Kreuzwegstationen wur-den um 1697 errichtet und sind eine Stiftung von Caspar Aman. Heute stehen die lebensgroßen Figuren am Fuß des Treppenaufganges zum Gei-ersberg. Auf dem Weg zur letzten Station, dem Kalvarienberg, passiert man die Ölberg szene. Das ursprüng-liche Kreuz wurde 1830 durch ein gusseisernes ersetzt.

Die Sonnenuhr am Alten Rathaus
An der Südseite des Alten Rathauses befi ndet sich eine Sonnenuhr, die wahrscheinlich seit der Errichtung des repräsentativen Südteiles des Rathauses dort angebracht ist. Ge-stalterisch ist sie eingebunden in ein dreiteiliges Ensemble: Die Son-nenuhr selbst nimmt den mittleren Teil ein, über ihr befi ndet sich ein zweiteiliger Block mit den Namen und Wappen der bayerischen Re-gierungsbezirke und das untere Feld wird von der Jahreszahl 1535 einge-nommen, das Jahr der Erbauung des Rathauses.
1924 beschloss der Deggendorfer Stadtrat, die alte Sonnenuhr am Rat-haus zu renovieren. Allerdings kam es entgegen des Beschlusses nie zu einer Renovierung, stattdessen wur-de gleich eine ganz neue Sonnenuhr angebracht, die 1956 noch einmal
aufgefrischt worden ist, worauf auch das Datum des Schriftbandes um die Uhr verweist.
Dem Betrachter gibt sie mit den Schriftzügen „Zu jeder Tat geb Gott Rat“ und „Mach es wie die Sonnen-uhr, zähl die heiteren Stunden nur“ gleich zwei Ratschläge mit auf den weiteren Weg.
[The Sundial at the Old Town Hall] On the south side of the Old Town Hall there is a sundial that has pro-bably been there since the respre-sentative south side of the Town Hall was built. From the design point of view, it is integrated into a three-piece ensemble: the sundial itself occupies the middle part; above it there is a two-piece block with the names and coats-of-arms of the Ba-varian administrative districts, and the lower fi eld shows the date 1535, the year the Town Hall was built.
In 1924 the Deggendorfer Town Council decided to refurbish the old sundial at the Town Hall. However, despite the decision the refurbish-ment never happened.
Instead, a brand new sundial was fi tted, which was polished again in
1956, as shown by the date of the writing around the clock. With the inscriptions „Zu jeder Tat geb Gott Rat“ (God gives advice about every deed“) and „Mach es wie die Son-nenuhr, zähl die heiteren Stunden nur“ (Do it like the sundial - only count the cheerful hours), visitors to the sundial receive two pieces of ad-vice to take with them.

Von der mittelalterlichen Stadtbefes-tigung zeugt noch ein Teil der Stadt-

Die beiden großen Kirchen, die Stadt pfarr kirche Mariä Himmel-
fahrt und die Hl. Grab kirche, gehö-ren neben dem Rathausturm zu den Wahr zeichen der Stadt Deggendorf.
Die Anfänge der Stadtpfarrkirche lie-gen, nach den archäologischen Be-fun den zu schließen, wohl noch vor der Jahrtausendwende.

des 17. Jahr hunderts. Besonders sehenswert ist der herrliche Balda-chin-Hoch altar, der 1749 von dem Hofbildhauer Matthias Seybold für den Dom von Eich stätt angefertigt und 1891 für Deggendorf angekauft wurde.
Viele Grab steine innerhalb und außer-halb der Kirche zeugen vom Leben und Ster ben reicher Deg gendorfer Bürger geschlechter.
A remnant of the town wall with its battlements is a reminder of the medieval fortifi cations. Many of the old town houses in Deggen dorf are listed as historical monuments. A good insight into the period bet-ween Biedermeier and art nouveau can be had from their façades and their sometimes rich stucco orna-mentation.

Grabkirche (Holy Sepulchre), toge-ther with the Town Hall tower have become landmarks of Deggendorf.
The origins of the parish church, in-ferring from archaeological evidence, probably date back to before the first millenium. Today’s basilica, with its aisle, nave and trancept, merely da-tes back to the mid-17th century.
Particularly worth seeing is the mag-nificent canopy high altar, which was made in 1749 by the court sculptor Matthias Seybold for the Eichstätt cathedral and purchased for Deg-gendorf in 1891.
Many gravestones inside and out-side the church bear witness to the lives and deaths of generations of wealthy Deggendorf citizens.
Als rein gotisches Bauwerk ist die Hl. Grab kirche zu betrachten, die aus der Zeit zwischen 1338 und 1360 stammt. Wuchtig greift dieser Kir-chenbau in das Bild des Stadtplatzes ein und schafft besonders mit dem erst 1727 voll en de ten Turm eine mar-kante Abgrenzung des Marktplatzes. Gerade dieser Turm, von Johann Gu-nezrhainer geplant und von JohannMichael Fischer, einem der bekann-testen Baumeister dieser Zeit, ausge-führt, gilt als einer der schönsten Ba-rocktürme Deutsch lands. Damit wirdder Stadtplatz, eingerahmt vom Al-ten Rat haus der Hl. Grabkirche und gesäumt von prächtigen Bürgerhäu-sern, zu einem der ausdrucksvollsten Stadtplätze deut scher Städte.
Herausragend unter den Kunstdenk-mälern Niederbayerns sind die Fres-
ken in der kleinen Oswaldkapelle in der Unteren Vorstadt. Sie stammen aus der Zeit um 1420, wurden irgend-wann übertüncht und vergessen, 1892 freigelegt und endgültig erst 1993/94 durch die Stadt Deggendorf in einzigartiger Weise restauriert.
Die Szenen aus dem Leben des hl. Oswald, eine Kreuzigungsszene, die Krö nung Mariens, ein ganzes Orches-ter aus Engeln mit allen bekann ten Musikinstru men ten des Mittelalters und viele andere Dar stel lun gen, ge-ben in ihren eindrucksvollen Farben die ganze kräftige Buntheit des mit-telalterlichen Lebens wieder.
Durch eine fachmännische Restau-rierung – gerade fertiggestellt – hat Deggendorf ein originales, mittelalter-liches Kunstwerk wiedergewonnen.

The Grabkirche, which dates to the period between 1338 and 1360, can be regarded as purely Gothic.
This massive church building domi-nates the town square, particularly with its tower which was only fi nis-hed in 1727, clearly defi ning the mar-ket place.
This tower in particular, conceived by Johannes Gunerz hainer and built by Johann Michael Fischer, one of the best-known builders of that time, is regarded as one of the most beauti-ful baroque towers in Germany. This makes the Stadtplatz, framed by the old Town Hall and the Grabkirche and lined with magnifi cent town houses, one of the most impressive German town squares.
Outstanding among the works of art of Lower Bavaria are the frescoes in the small Oswald chapel in the lower city. They date back to around 1420, were whitewashed over at some stage and then forgotten, uncover-ed again in 1892 and fi nally carefully re stored in 1993/94 by Deg gendorf town council.
The impressive colours of the scenes from the life of St. Oswald, a crucifi -xion scene, the crow ning of Mary, a whole orchestra composed of angels playing all the musical instruments known at the time and many other portrayals refl ect the colourful life of the Middle Ages in all its intensity.
Deggendorf has only now recover-ed an original medieval work of art thanks to this professional resoration.

Eine Glanzleistung niederbayeri sch-er Ba rock malerei fi ndet sich in der Spitalkirche St. Ka tharina.
Das den ganzen Plafond einneh-mende Deckengemälde, welches das Marty rium der hl. Katharina dar-stellt, gilt als eines der besten Werke des Niederaltaicher Malers Franz Anton Rauscher.
Geradezu ein Lecker bis sen für den Kunstkenner ist der Engel, der über dem Südeingang der Kirche hinter einem ganz rot in rot gehaltenen Vor-hang hervortritt, den Finger an den Mund legt und damit um Ruhe in der Kirche bittet. Die Spitalkirche wurde 1992/93 vollständig renoviert und steht jetzt wieder dem Besucher of-fen.
Unter den Deggendorfer Kirchen ist noch die Geiersbergkirche beson-ders zu erwähnen, eine Wall fahrts-kirche aus dem Jahre 1486 mit vie-len kultur- und medizinhistorisch wert vollen Votivtafeln, die bis in das 15. Jahrhundert zurückreichen.
Nicht übersehen werden darf die An-
lage des Bezirksklinikums Main-
kofen, die ihresgleichen sucht. Es handelt sich um ein reines Jugend-stilensemble, das zwischen 1909 und 1911 von dem Architekten Al-bert Haug errichtet wurde.
Wer durch die Parkanlagen geht, vor bei an den Pavillons und Pförtner-häuschen, hinein ins Theaterr und des Haupt ge ländes mit seinem sechs eckigen Wasser turm, den ein über lebens großes Bild des hl. Flo-rian schmückt, der kann Architek-tur als spielerische Gestal tung mit Baufor men und Bau ma terial erleben und nachfühlen.

church.
The painting takes up the entire cei-ling and shows the martyrdom of St. Catherine, and is regarded as one of the best works of the painter Franz Anton Rauscher of Niederaltaich.
A real gem for the art connoisseur will be the angel who appears be-hind a red curtain above the south entrance with its fi nger to its mouth, thereby asking for silence in church.
St. Catherine’s church was com-pletely renovated in 1992/93 and is once again open to the public.
Another Deggendorf church worth men tion ing is the Geiersberg
church, a pilgrimage church dating back to 1486, which contains many vo tive tablets that are historically valu able from a cultural and medicalpoint of view and date back to the 15th century.
Although it still has to fi nd a peer, the Main kofen district clinic must not be overlooked. This is an en-semble of buildings completely in art nouveau style, erec ted between 1909 and 1911 by the architect Al-bert Haug.
Whoever wanders through the parks, past the pavillions and gatekeeper´s lodge, into the amphitheatre of the main area with its hexagonal water tow er, decorated with a larger-than-life picture of St. Florian, will be able to experience and feel architecture as a playful creative expression of forms and materials.

ihm einen groß förmi gen Knö del mit-ten ins Ge sicht, sodass der Eindring-ling völlig überrascht rücklings von der Leiter in den Stadtgraben stürz-te. Pudelnass kehrte der böhmische Spä her ins Lager zurück und meldete dem Haupt mann: „Die Deggendor-fer haben noch soviel zu essen, dass sie mit Knödeln schießen können“. Daraufhin zogen die feindlichen Trup-pen ab. Die Stadt war gerettet.Zur Ehre der Retterin aus größter Not wurde im Zuge der Altstadtsanierung ein Denkmal, der Knödelbrunnen, in der Nähe des Stadt mauerrestes er-richtet. Seit altersher hängen an der Südfront des alten Rathauses zwei stei nerne Kugeln, an die sich die Sa-ge klammert. In Wirklichkeit handelt es sich um Schand ku geln, die im Mit-tel alter lasterhaften Frauen an die Füße gekettet oder um den Hals ge-hängt wur den. Der Volksmund nann-te sie „Mehl speis zum Umhängen“.
1266 zog Ottokar von Böhmen mit schweren Kriegsabteilungen über den „Nortwald“ her und verwüste-te die Oberpfalz und Nieder bayern. Deggendorf bot seinen Bürgern in-ner halb des Stadtgrabens und des doppelten Mauer ringes sicheren Schutz. Selbst die Bauern der Um-gebung fanden in der befestigten Burg mit Hausstand und Viehzeug Unterschlupf.Als die Kriegshaufen Ottokars auf Deggen dorf vorrückten, zog die Bür ger wehr zur Vertei di gung in den Zwinger. Die feindlichen Truppen plün derten die Häuser vor den Stadt-toren, darunter auch das Amtsge-bäude der Probstei. Alsdann richte-ten sie sich zur Belagerung ein und bereiteten die Erstürmung der Stadt vor. Damit die Bürgerwehr jederzeit abwehrbereit blieb, brachten die Bür-gerfrauen das Essen zum Zwinger.Die Wohnung des Bürgermeisters lag in der engen Zwingergasse un-mittelbar gegenüber der Stadtmau-er. Als die Frau des Bürger meisters eben an ihrem Küchentisch ihren Knödelteig zubereitete und kurz aus dem Fenster schaute, erkannte sie einen feindlichen Ei n dring ling auf der Mauerbrüs tung. Sie erschrak nicht we nig und oh ne zu zögern warf sie

In 1266, Ottokar of Bohemia mar-ched through the „Northwood“ and laid waste to the Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria. Deggendorf was able to offer safety to its citizens inside its moat and double ring of walls. Even the peasants from the surroun dings found refuge in the forti fi ed castle with their house-holds and animals. As Ottokar’s ar-mies ap proached Deg gendorf, the
militia moved into the keep to de-fend themselves. The enemy army pillag ed the houses outside the city gates, including that of the provost. Then they besieged the town and started their preparations to take it by storm. In order to keep the militia at readiness to repel any attacks, the women took the food to the keep. The mayor’s dwellings were in the narrow alley facing the city wall. Just as the mayor’s wife was making the pastry for her dump lings, she hap-pened to look up and saw an ene-my intruder on the parapet. She was startled, to say the least, and threw a large dumpling right into his face, so that he - totally surprised - fell back-wards off the ladder into the moat. Soaking wet, the scout re turned to the camp and reported to his offi cer: „The Deggendorfers still have so much food left that they can afford to shoot with dumplings“. After this the enemy troops moved off. The town was saved. A monument - the dumpling foun-tain - was put up in honour of the saviour from this great peril near the remains of the city ramparts as part of the old town redevelopment. Since time immemorial, two stone spheres have hung from the south face of the old town hall, which the legend clings to.
In reality they are balls which that were used in the Middle Ages to pu-nish depraved women by chaining these to their feet or hanging them around the neck. They were popular-ly called „pastry to wear“.

Deggendorf - 1002 erstmals urkund-lich er wähnt - war an einem natür-lichen Donau über gang errichtet wor-den. Für die in Bayern herr schenden Geschlechter immer ein Grund, hier präsent zu sein. Unter den Wittels-bachern wird die Stadt neu geordnet und geplant an gelegt. Privilegien und Vergünstigungen werden er-teilt, bis 1316 das Stadtrecht ver-liehen wird. Damit ist Deggendorf für das Um land zu einem Anzie-hungspunkt für Markt und Handel geworden. Der reprä sentative Bau des Deggendorfer Rathauses inmit-ten eines groß zügigen Marktplatzes weist im Jahre 1535 auf eine reiche und selbstbewusste Bürgerschaft hin. Schwere Zerstörun gen erlitt die Stadt während der Kriege im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert. Ob wohl diese Ereignisse lange ihre Spuren hin-ter ließen, entstand Deggendorf als funk tio n ierende Stadt mit Hilfe der Ressourcen des Umlandes schnell wie der. Ein barockes Zei chen städ-tischen Selbstbewusstseins wurde im Bau des Grabkirchturmes 1722 ge setzt. Im 19. Jahrhundert wird die Eisenbahnlinie über die Donau in den
Wald hinein geschaffen, eine stabile Donaubrücke entsteht und Straßen erschließen das Umland von Deggen-dorf in bisher unbekanntem Maße.Andererseits werden die Stadtgräben aufgefüllt und verkauft, die Stadttore und die Stadt mauern verschwinden. Heute ist nur noch ein 27 m langes Stück zufällig überlieferter Stadt mau-er erhalten geblieben. Erst im vori-gen Jahrhundert erfuhr Deggen dorf durch Eingemeindungen einen ent-scheidenden Gebiets- und Bevölke-rungszuwachs und vergrößerte sich um ein Vielfaches.
Der Natternberg
In der Weite des Gäubodens und der Donauebene erhebt sich der Nat-ternberg. Dieser kristalline Ausläu-fer des Bayerischen Waldes ragt ca. 65 m auf und ist aufgrund seiner geologischen Besonderheit in die Liste der Naturdenkmäler eingetra-gen. Schon immer hat dieser Berg Menschen in seinen Bann gezogen wie Funde aus der Steinzeit, der Ur-nenfelderzeit, der Hallstattzeit und der La-Tène-Zeit an deuten. Als sich in Bayern eine weitläufi ge politische Struktur bilde te, wählten die Grafen von Bogen diesen Berg als Stand-ort einer Burg, die von den Wittels-bachern übernommen, und zum Sitz des Landgerichtes Natternberg wurde. Herzog Heinrich XV. (1312 – 1333) residierte dort und ging in die Bayerische Geschichtsschrei-bung als „Heinrich der Natternber-ger“ ein. Im Dreißigjährigen Krieg und noch mehr im Österreichischen

Erbfolge krieg beschädigten feind-liche Truppen die Burg, so dass die Verwaltung dort nur mehr notdürftig untergebracht war. In der Folge ver-kaufte der Bayerische Staat die Rui-ne an die Grafen von Moos. Während der Nachkriegszeit bis 1963 war der Berg sogar mit ca. 3000 Weinstö-cken bepfl anzt, dessen Trauben die letzten Bewohner der Burg zur „Nat-ternberger Teufelskralle“ kelterten – eine Anspielung auf die sagenhafte Entstehung des Berges bei der der Teufel seine Krallen im Spiel gehabt haben soll…
Das Schiffmeisterhaus
Das Schiffmeisterhaus erhielt im Jahre 1590 im Wesentlichen seine an sprechende Gestalt. Als eines der letzten noch im ursprünglichen Zu-stand erhaltenen Wohnhäuser dieser Zeit soll es vor dem endgültigen Ver-fall gerettet und einer Nutzung durch die Allgemeinheit zugeführt werden. Hierzu tragen Mittel des Freistaates Bayern und der Europäischen Union / Leader+ bei.
Das Schiffmeisterhaus wird ein „Info- Hafen“ an der Donau werden und alle Bereiche rund um die The-men Wasser, Umwelt und Gesund-heit ab decken. Als öffentlich zugäng-liches Gebäude bietet es künftig für die Bürger:• Ausstellungs- und Tagungsräume• Informationsmaterial• Medien• und „Wasser“Die Eröffnung ist für das Jahr 2008 vorgesehen.

Deggendorf - fi rst mentioned in a Document in 1002 - originated at a natural Danube crossing. This has always been a good reason for the rulers of Bavaria to be present here. During the Wittelsbacher rule the town was rearranged and laid out in a planned manner. Favours and privileges were handed out until the town received its charter in 1316. This made Deggendorf into a market and trading hub for the surrounding area. The building of a prestigious town hall in the middle of a gene-rously laid out marketplace in 1535 is an indication for thriving and self-confi dent citizens. The town was se-verely damaged in the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. Although these events left deep marks over a long period, Deggendorf quickly rose again as a functioning town, aided by the resources from the surroun-ding area. A baroque sign of muni-cipal self-assurance was the erec-tion of the Grabkirche church tower in 1722. The 19th century saw the construction of a railway line across the Danube into the forest, a stab-le Danube bridge and regional road connections to a hither to unknown degree. On the other hand, the town ditches are fi lled in and sold, the town gates and town walls disap-pear. All that is left today is a 27-met-re long piece of random traditional town wall. It was only during the last century that Deggendorf grew signi-fi cantly and multiplied many times in size and population by incorporating surrounding villages.

nube plain. This crystalline ridge of the Bavarian Forest soars up some 65 metres and is registered into the list of natural monuments due to its geological peculiarity. This mountain has always cast a spell on people, as discoveries from the Stone Age, the Urnenfeld Age, the Hallstatt Age and the La-Tène Age indicate. When an extensive political structure was for-med in Bavaria, the Earls of Bogen chose this mountain as the site of a castle that was taken over by the Wittelsbachers and became the seat of Natternberg District Court. Duke Heinrich XV (1312 – 1333) resided there and went down in the history of Bavaria as ˝Heinrich the Nattern-berger˝. In the Thirty Years‘ War and even more in the War of the Austrian Succession, enemy troops damaged the castle so that the administration was only accommodated there in a makeshift manner. Subsequently the Bavarian State sold the runis to the Earl von Moos. During the post-war period until 1963, around 3,000 grapevines were even planted on the mountain whose grapes were pressed by the last inhabitants of the ˝Natternberg Devil‘s Claw˝ Castle – an allusion to the legendary origin of the mountain, where the devil is said to have had his claws involved …
The ˝Schiffmeisterhaus˝
In 1950 the Schiffmeisterhaus es-sentially received its appealing cha-racter. As one of the last residential buildings from this period still in its original condition, the plan is to save it from fi nal dilapidation and put it to use by the general public. Funds from the free state of Bavaria and European Union /Leader + contribute to this. The Schiffmeisterhaus is in-tended to become an “Info-Port“ on the Danube covering all aspects of

in der Broschüre unter der entspre-chenden Nummer eine Erklärung gibt. Die zahlreichen auf dem Gei-ersberg wachsenden Baumarten wer den mit tels Schildern erklärt. Interessierte Besucher können die Baumarten erst einmal raten. Hin-ter höl z ernen Klapptafeln verbergen sich dann die Baumbeschreibungen. Auf dem Geiersberg wartet ein en-ges Netz an Wegen auf den Spazier-gänger. Die Lehrpfadroute ist markiert und hat eine Länge von 2,8 km. Sie führt vorbei an einem Hain zur Erinnerung an die Gefallenen der beiden Welt-kriege und an einem alten Brunnen mit Teich, an dessen Rand man un-ter alten Kastanien verweilen kann. Am so genannten Parapluie, einem überdachten Aussichtspavillon, kann der Wanderer sich zu einer Brotzeit niederlassen.

Gleich hinter der Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt gelangt man auf den Geiersberg. Der städtische Wald am Gei ersberg, hoch über der Deggen-dorfer Altstadt, bietet Erholung in der Natur mit wunderschönen Aus-blicken auf Stadt und Donautal. Ein naturkundlicher und geschichtlicher Lehrpfad lädt ein, etwas über den Wandel des Geiersbergs im Laufe der Geschichte und seine vielfäl-tigen Eigenschaften als Lebensraum für Pfl anzen und Tiere zu erfahren. Zu dem Lehrpfad gibt es eine Be-gleitbroschüre, die Sie in der Deg-gendorfer Touristinformation erhal-ten. Nummerierte Pfosten im Wald markieren die Stellen, zu denen es

The path immediately behind Mary’s Assumption parish church leads to Mount Geiersberg. The communal forest on Mount Geiersberg, high above Deggendorf old town centre, offers recreation in nature and mar-vellous views of the town and the River Danube Valley. A natural-his-tory and historical nature trail invites you to learn something about the change in the Geiersberg over the course of history and its diverse qua-lities as living space for plants and animals. There is an accompanying brochure on the nature trail that you can obtain at the Deggendorf Tou-rist Information Offi ce. Numbered posts in the forest mark the places about which there are explanations in the brochure under the correspon-ding number. A tree teaching path gives the opportunity to learn about numerous tree species which grow there. Interested visitors can, at fi rst, guess the species of the tree. The descriptions of the trees are hidden behind wood folding boards. On Mount Geiersberg, a tight network of paths awaits the stroller. The te-aching path route is marked and is approximately 2.8 km long. It leads past a grove of remembrance for sol-diers killed in both World Wars and an old well with a pond, on the bank of which, one can rest for a while un-der old chestnut trees. At the so cal-led “Parapluie“, a covered lookout pavilion, the rambler can sit and have a meal break. Parking spaces are lo-cated at the cemetery near Mary’s Assumption parish church and at the pilgrimage church near Mount Gei-ersberg.
