It’s time to explore!

As summer rolls around, the heat cranks up and the wanderlust kicks in. It’s time to bring down those suitcases, lather on the sunscreen and head out for your next adventure.

At Destination, we work to discover the gems of Sharqiya every day. And so, even for this special travel edition, we had to look no further than our very own Kingdom. We

came across individuals in and around Sharqiya who have raised the bar for any travel enthusiast. Meet mountaineer Aziz Al Omran, travel photographer Khalid Al Jmaan, documentarian Moath Alofi and travel vlogger Al Juhara Sajer – all talented, inspiring and passionate young men and women of KSA who travel, explore and leave their mark on every place they visit.

To start you off on your own journey, we decided to dig into a little bit of Sharqiya’s past. We uncovered Jubail’s secrets and looked into the life of the legendary Ghazi Al Ghosaibi - Sharqiya’s most celebrated poet, politician and patriot. Whether you’re looking for a small dose of history, travel or dining, this edition is packed with cultural inspiration for everyone.

Spread your wings and fly this summer, Sharqawis. Explore the world, discover its hidden gems and grow with every step that you take in all your travels. As for us, we’ll always be right here to remind you that no matter where your travels take you, our heart, home and history will always be in Sharqiya.

Last month, we introduced the key money personality types. This month we try to present some expert advice for each type. According to “Success Resources” (srpl.net), here are a few pointers:

To the Big Spender You must set – and stick to – certain limits. Keep a diary of all your purchases so you can see where you’re leaking cash and cut back. Devise a budget, then put away your credit cards and give yourself a weekly cash allowance.

To the Saver To improve your financial future, take baby steps toward loosening up. Take a few risks in your investments. Don't

FINANCIAL PLANNING W I T H R E E M A S A A D

let all of the fun parts of life pass you by just to save a few pennies. Moderation is good and life is indeed about trying to balance things out.

To the Shopper Take control of the credit card. Try to focus your effort on savings some money. Learn the philosophy behind successful savings plans. A good way also is to think about the less- advantaged neighbor or friend and imagine how you would do in their shoes.

To the Debtor Get your finances in order and set up a plan to start investing. If you need help (and you probably will) seek a pro and do your mental checks.

To the Investor Bravo! Keep it up. Investing –especially early- cultivates healthy money habits even without planning. The discipline needed to grow your capital cannot be acquired over night. Taking risk requires a certain amount of courage and vision. My only advice is to take “calculated risks” whereby you set certain goals from the start and work your way from there.

In the end, humans tend to change and evolve over time, age and life experiences. We are naturally hybrid creatures and there is no single personality type all the way. The description above helps define behavior toward money, and the purpose is to help us take a mirror image of such behavior and try to improve it as best as we possibly could.

So what got you into app developing?Back in college, our future CEO Mohammed Al Kadi had an idea for an app where people could choose the feeling they’re having and select whether they wanted to “Embrace” it or “Squash” it, and then the app would provide content to the user that is based on their current emotion.

Page 17: DS Issue 5

15DESTINATIONKSA.COM

MohammedAl Kadi

For example, you could choose “Sleepy” and then choose to “Embrace” it. Feelit would then give you soothing music to help you embrace your sleepiness.

Al Kadi eventually met the rest of us that would become the team and we all started building it together. The first version of Feelit was released in the app stores September 2013.

How has the location of the Feelit headquarters contributed to its growth? After a few iterations with our first app and getting some good traction, we decided to take a more serious step towards building our startup, raised our first round of investment and moved to San Francisco. We know you can build a world-changing business

anywhere, but we felt it was more efficient to do so at your industry’s center of gravity. For technology, that place is Silicon Valley.

Your most recent venture is a live-streaming app called Chubble. What’s the inspiration behind it?We saw a gap in the live-streaming industry that we knew Chubble could

fill perfectly. People wanted a streaming app that was focused on

privacy and let you connect with friends and family rather than fans and followers. That’s exactly the niche we’re providing for.

The inspiration behind our logo came from our Feelit users.

Page 18: DS Issue 5

DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 201616

The Feelit community used to write the name of the app using the elephant emoji since the Arabic word for “elephant” is pronounced “feel,” so “Feelit” became it. With time, the elephant became our community’s mascot and we adopted it as a logo for Chubble.

How does Chubble differentiate itself from other live-streaming apps?In Chubble we are focused on privacy and having an intimate environment where our users can chubble with their family and close friends. In fact, we don’t consider it a typical live-streaming app at all. Instead, it’s more like live video rounds for groups. A chubble would start with one of the streamers who will go live for 30 seconds, then the camera switches to the

Most importantly, always be sure to include your customer when you’re building a consumer product such as a social app.

The Lean Startup methodology suggests that instead of investing a lot of time and effort into building and perfecting your product, you should take incremental steps and build a minimum viable product which has just enough features to gather validated learning about the product and its continued development.

THEN, YOU SHOULD ITERATE, CHANGE YOUR DECISION-MAKING PROCESS.

next person in the call, then the person after that and so on until it circles back.

What was the public’s initial response to Chubble? So far it has been amazing. Chubble recently exploded in Qatar by pure word of mouth and has reached the number one spot in the top free apps on Apple’s app store. The word “Chubble” was also the top trending word in the search section of the store. We love our users and we are super grateful for the amazing support we always get from them.

Any advice for aspiring app developers? One thing we have learned through experience is the importance of being lean and flexible when and move quickly.

SHARQAWIS SCALE SUMMIT!Mount Kilimanjaro is no match for this group of Saudis.By Deema Al Bugmi

On Sept. 28 last year a group of young men from Khobar went on an adventure to reach the top of the world. Aziz Al Omran, Ryan Al Zamil, Ziyad Al Zamil, Aziz Al Rabia, Marwan Al Khulaiwi and Abdullah Al Maghlouth climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, standing tall at 5,895 meters as the highest freestanding mountain in the world.

The inspiration behind their journey was about new experiences and trying something out of the ordinary and they chose Kilimanjaro because of its high success rate. The climb took seven days, no showers (yikes!) and a whole lot of will power.

I had a quick sit-down with Al Omran and asked a few questions about their journey. CO

contain our excitement and sense of accomplishment. With immense pride and having just celebrated Saudi’s national day, we planted the Saudi flag on the highest freestanding mountain in the world.

What are your takeaways from the experience?I learned so much from this trip. Because it was my first time in Africa, it was an insight into a whole new culture. The tribes we came across led a simple and old-fashioned lifestyle and taught me a valuable lesson about appreciating the simple pleasures in life.

My friends and I agreed that the entire journey was very dependent on team effort and the support of one another. When one of us fell, we had to

What were the challenges you faced? The whole experience was very challenging, right from the planning phase. It was hard for us to know what to expect because we’d never done this before.

Mentally, you had to be prepared for whatever came your way while always determined to reach the summit. Physically, the biggest challenge we faced was altitude sickness. Some of us had intense reactions that included severe headaches, diarrhea and even passing out so close to the summit.

How did you feel when you reached the top?At that moment when we reached the summit and saw the breathtaking view, we all forgot how tired we were and an incredible sense of serenity came upon us. It’s very difficult to put in words how we felt, but we couldn’t

pick them up and push through together until they regained their strength.

Most importantly, I learned and highly recommend that everyone pursue and experience their dreams and earn that most satisfying sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

What is your advice to future climbers who were inspired by your experience? My advice for future climbers is to prepare yourselves mentally and physically, be patient and never give up on yourself. Don’t listen to anyone who wants to discourage you or stop you from accomplishing your dreams!

Saudi travel photographer Khalid Aljmaan shares his experiences.By Norah Aleisa

INTERNATIONAL SHUTTERBUG

Did you go to school to study photography? Yes, I studied photography at the International Islamic University Malaysia.

What drew you to focus on travel photography? Studying in Malaysia, I found myself gravitating towards photographing people down the street just living their lives. However, it wasn't until I took a workshop with Saudi photographer Abbas Al Khamees that I discovered the world of travel photography.

How do you usually approach people to take a photo? Some cultures are more open than others where you can simply smile and ask. But for example in Ethiopia, you must approach the head of the tribe first and get their approval. When shooting in developing countries, I personally prefer to compensate those who allow me to photograph them for their time and effort. What destination do you find yourself constantly returning to?India. There's so much life there and so many places I've yet to explore. Who has been your friendliest subject and why?The first time I'd been to Nepal, one of the people I came across was a wonderful little girl that I had the pleasure

of photographing. Three years later I visited the village again and as we were walking through the village I found her running towards me. She even remembered my name. How important is Photoshop in your final images? It aids in adding depth and creating a more polished look. However, it’s very important not to overdo it. What advice would you give aspiring travel photographers? One tip I had to learn the hard way is: be quick! Always make sure your subject knows that you value their time. So, for example, if you need to use two different lenses, then have them both ready to use on two different cameras.

What destination is next on your list? Vietnam.

Moath Alofi was born in Madinah, KSA in 1984. He has a degree in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development from Bond University, Gold Coast, Australia, and is currently working as an environmental coordinator and safety supervisor at Dar Alhijra project in Madinah. He returned to Madinah in 2013 where he started his journey of discovery, documenting its cultural heritage with the hope of safeguarding it for future generations. He is the founder of @Almthba and the co-founder of Erth team.

23DESTINATIONKSA.COM

How did the idea of documenting the old neighborhoods of Al Madinah come about? When I came back from overseas I saw a changing city whose development is taking down parts of its history so I wanted to keep something for the next generation to remember how Madinah used to look like.

What thoughts pass through your mind when walking through Al Madinah’s soon-to-be-removed neighborhoods?Nostalgia that comes from growing up in a similar neighborhood and amazement of how skillful the craftsmen were in using their environment to build these houses from the surrounding materials, lava rocks and palm trees.

You've taken photographs of many places in Saudi Arabia. What was your favorite place to take pictures of and why?Khaybar is number one on my list and I’m still not done with it. Its lava and inactive volcanoes are just amazing and surreal and there are many places including castles and an old town that need to be explored and documented. It’s like traveling back in time when going there.

What do you pack in your bag when you go exploring or hiking?Camera first, a knife, first aid kit just in case, and a lighter. For some long trips or hikes I take canned food,

bread and bananas for a dose of potassium.

What is your favorite city in Saudi Arabia and why?Al Madinah. It’s an open museum full of wonders and it’s in the center of too many favorite destinations. If you goto the east you will find lava fields and Mount Ohain where the greatest inscriptions can be found. If you go up to the north you’ll be driving by some parts of the Ottomans forts, castles and ancient dams to reach Khaybar and Alula. To the west you will reach Badr and the great Red Sea where you can snorkel at the reef. South, there are beautiful villages and nature spots like Khals and Milha, Wadi Alfar’e and Himanah.

Any advice for future documentary enthusiasts?Keep on exploring. Learn and push yourself by walking the extra mile. For out of city exploration and documentation trips, be safe and take care while doing this, always be prepared and let relatives know where you’re heading. For urban or in-city documenting I would suggest that you get closer to your subject and go deep in details, read more about what you are focusing on and be prepared. Don’t be shy but respect the spaces of others.

What are your future plans?I have established Almthba, an interdisciplinary studio focusing on the region of Madinah by promoting art and helping researchers, in addition to planning eco and specialized tours. There is also the Erth Team where we will keep on exploring and documenting the region of Madinah as well as the rest of the country eventually.

almthba

Inside nabawi mosque

Are you self-taught or did you learn photography in school?I feel it is more about what I feel when seeing something. I had an elective course in photography while doing my degree but I remember holding a camera since 10 or so, and I’m still learning. Mobile phones helped me with shaping my skills as it was the start of my documenting journey, using only my phone camera. I learned so much from workshops, reading and seeing great photographer’s works like Richard Avedon and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

You do a lot of aerial photography; how do you manage that? When it comes to aerial photography, I have to mention Captain Abdulaziz Aldakheel. He’s a sport pilot who uses a light sport powered parachute two-seater and single engine aircraft to document the region of Madinah from the sky. We decided to cooperate in doing this and after a while we decided to establish the Erth aerial photography team. Our mission is to document the heritage of the region and its landmarks from the sky. So far our team has grown to 14 members strong.

Ghazi Abdulrahman Al Gosaibi was born March 3, 1940 in Al Ahsa and came from one of the oldest and wealthiest trading families of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, the Al Gosaibi family.

He had lost his mother at nine months old and described his youth as, “Oscillating between two poles - the first, my father, who was stern and severe (I was not permitted to leave the house, for instance); and the second, my maternal grandmother, who was

exceedingly kind and took great pity on the ‘little orphan.’

Al Gosaibi published more than 60 books, most of which were poetry. His first masterpiece was published in 1977, “From the Orient and the Desert.” Two of his novels were even translated to English: “Seven” and “An Apartment Called Freedom.” The latter tells the tale of four undergrads who moved from conservative Bahrain to Cairo. The book elicits a great sense IL

of nostalgia by describing Cairo in the 50s.

He based his works on the topics of love, corruption, taboos and the condition of the Arab state. He also spoke against terrorism and extremism, constantly seeking reform, education and growth.

His poems often reflected his patriotism. He wrote a poem for the opening of the King Fahd Causeway through which he spoke about the strong connection between Saudi and Bahrain with great pride and triumph. He used his poems as a way of getting a message across and speaking about contemporary issues. His words filled people with a great sense of ardor and alacrity and his ideas opened doors for the visionaries of today.

He believed that the way to liberate the power hidden in young people is by hard work and ambition. When he was minister of labor, he stood in a fast food restaurant flipping burgers for three hours as a way of encouraging Saudis to

take jobs they had belittled.

Al Gosaibi advocated for women to have stronger opportunities in the workforce, wanted to see more Saudi youth working everyday jobs and helped the country improve, renovate and grow.

His departure in 2010 left a void, but his work will live on to inspire people.

The people tell a city’s history, but Jubail’s story is captured through its different names, from Jubail to Jubail Al Balad, Jubail Industrial City and soon, Jubail Industrial City II.

Ask any grandfather from Jubail about the city and he will tell you about Jubail Al Balad and take you back to the time when sea diving and the pearl industry were the source of livelihood for the small village. He might also tell you a story from his childhood about the building of one of the most valuable heritage sites in Jubail, Al Tawyyah Fort,

by order of King Abdualziz in 1929 to protect the city’s main water well. He will also describe to you the excitement of the village when the first team of geologists arrived in 1933 to search for oil.

Ask an engineer living in Jubail about the city and he’ll tell you about Jubail Industrial City and how a Royal Decree in 1975 established the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu to lead Saudi Arabia into the petrochemical industry. From the city’s name, you will not be surprised to know that it is home to the largest

Before the modern seaports, there was Al Mrdomh, a military defense fort from 1st century BC, now an archeological site. Then there are the ancient ruins of the city of Gerrha, which are estimated to date back to the 3rd century BC. These sites are planned to open as museums to the public and are an example of Saudi Arabia’s rich history that is being discovered across the Kingdom and reflected by the land, its people and the rich names of its cities.

petrochemical installations in the Middle East, a recognized naval base, seaports and one of the largest independent water and power projects in the world. He might also tell you that the Industrial City is in the 1983 Guinness Book of World Records for being the “largest engineering and construction project ever attempted.”

However, the area has been recorded in books long before the rise of the Industrial City. Jubail was named after a mountain located in a body of water in the northeast coastline that is now mostly underwater. Seven thousand years ago the area hosted the Dilmun civilization, one of the oldest civilizations in the Arabian Gulf. Their role in history as trade partners and the area’s rich natural resources are mentioned in the ancient Mesopotamian poem, “Epic of Gilgamesh.”

A New Age For SAUDI WOMEN IN MEDIAAl Juhara Sajer and Hessa Al Awwad dish on the “vlogging” life. By Aabiya Baqai and Anousha Vakani

Al Juhara Sajer The Professional Dreamer

A R T S & E N T E R TA I N M E N T

Sajer started off with a beauty and fashion vlog aimed at young Arab girls for tips and tricks on style and beauty. She then added a travel vlog. “The second channel is where my viewers follow me around to different destinations.”

She preferred not to show her face at first but eventually began showing it in 2015 when she believed it was the right choice to make and the audience was ready.

Sajer refers to herself as a “professional dreamer” because she has managed to convert her dream of traveling and vlogging into a career. Sajer adds, “Rather than just making vlogs when I’m bored, I get paid to travel, to go to events and to see the world, which is a dream come true.”

Al Juhara Sajer was a college student who got really ill one day, forcing her to stay at home and spend time on YouTube, only to realize that there was a lack of local Arab vloggers. She then decided to make her own videos.

Hessa Al Awwad is a full-time YouTuber based in Sharqiya, but with fans (or “flowers” as she calls them) all over the world. Fascinated by art, beauty and DIYs, Al Awwad started her YouTube channel when she failed to find sufficient beauty and

Sajer believes that new age media has completely evolved the audience experience. “In online media, because a lot of people are exposed to honest relatable perspectives, it’s a major change from traditional media.” She also thinks that the role of Saudi women in this media is slowly and steadily gaining strength.

“When I started my channel four years ago, I got a lot of negative comments from men telling me that YouTube is not my place and I should focus on house chores instead. I was shocked, so I approached my dad for advice and he told me not to quit, but rather change their mentality and pave the way for other women.”

Sajer has even involved her father in her

DIY videos in Arabic. After discussing the idea with her family, she started creating videos that focused on nail art. Al Awwad was especially obsessed with “beautiful hands and nails.”

At first, Al Awwad didn’t appear in her videos. She only began to appear in them three to four years after starting her channel and admits that she was a bit concerned at first, as she covers her face. However, Al Awwad knew that if she would always be too scared to take the next step, she would never achieve her dreams. She is confident in her choice now, saying that there was a lot more support than criticism and while many of her fans were confused, most felt closer to her.

Now a partner with Duniati and despite the growth of her

YouTube channel, Al Awwad says that her channel is all about her fans: “I don’t see my lens as an object, it’s like I am looking at my audience. At the end of the day, the most important measurement of my success is if I can draw a smile on my fans’ faces.”

She also says that her fans encourage her to keep going with their nice words and support. She recalls an incident where a mother emailed her saying that she couldn’t communicate with her teenage daughters, until they discovered her videos and now make it a weekly routine to watch her videos together.

Al Awwad draws inspiration from everything around her from abaya designs and makeup to music videos. She gets a lot of ideas from the Internet, her fans and her mom.

Al Johi knew he wanted to do something out of the ordinary for the community and he felt the need to create an outlet for the huge amount of positive energy he felt in Sharqiya. He wanted to give artists a space for creative expression and entrepreneurs the support they deserve. He is immensely proud of his community – the young men and women of Sharqiya who are following their dreams and making something out of their lives.

He started looking for a designer he could click with and could come up with strategies in taking an ordinary exhibition to the next level. Enter Seeta Bin Jumaa. They came up with the idea of 966 Box Park, a trendy outlet for artists and entrepreneurs and the first of its kind in the Kingdom. They worked out all the details and went off on a search for the perfect location, settling on the old Pepsi warehouse which was ideal in its size, isolation and rustic appeal.

They then built a database of the best artists and influential social media accounts in Sharqiya. Within a few days, the word of 966 Box Park had already spread far and people were excited and curious but also a little skeptical. Still, not a single attendee was disappointed and they all left eagerly looking forward to the next chapter of 966 Box Park.

To ensure their audience left with a message, the event was organized under the theme of recycling. Crates, tires and old furniture pieces were reused and incorporated into the event design.

Al Johi and his team are already planning their next event and they aim to bring something even more unique and polished.

Currently a finance student, Turki Al Romaih is one of the most inspiring artists of his generation. Raised in Sharqiya, he spent many summers abroad soaking up art and culture, all of which he incorporates into his work while staying true to his own roots. A strong believer in observational learning, Al Romaih admits he learns best by observing artists. While studying in the US, he had an annual pass to the Portland Art Museum which he would visit at least once or twice a month. There, he would speak with

his art with more people. His curiosity and experimentation led him to pick up spray painting. He loved the effect and that is where he began his journey in street art. Al Romaih is all about encouraging others to try their hand at art and follow their passion – he tries to interact and engage the crowds at his art shows and answers as many questions as he can.

He says that street art is gaining more acceptance in Sharqiya but the next step would be to have more events like 966 Box Park and expose

people to the idea. “It’s also a great alternative to the dull blank white walls of any city,” said Al Romaih. “For the past six months I have been in contact with a number of government officials who seem to share my enthusiasm about the topic. I can’t share too much, but I can tell you to expect government-sponsored street art pieces around Khobar within the next year or so.”

During the recent 966 Box event, people got an up close and personal look at how a graffiti artist does his magic. We sat down with the artist himself, Marwan Al Hatlan, who goes by the street name of merro_boss and was kind enough to let us pick his creative brain.

Why merro_boss?In the beginning I used to just go by Marwan, but then I noticed that other artists always make up nicknames, hence merro. As for boss, well that was something a friend of mine used to say a lot and I liked the idea of using something that had a strong presence to it.

How did you get involved with 966 Box?I had actually just stumbled upon some of the artwork being prepared for the event and talked to the artist. Before I knew it, they hooked me up with a chance to do some live graffiti work during the event. It was a lot of fun!

Have you done official work or is it mostly for yourself?I've had friends get jailed for doing graffiti work illegally and that’s definitely not how I like to do things. I always seek out permission first. For example, there's an abandoned hospital in our neighborhood that had some really nice empty walls and space outside. I worked with a social group to help draft up the proper permissions and

then I went to one of the sons of the hospital owner and got his approval to use the site for my graffiti. That's how I like to approach my work. It gives it credibility and there's nothing in it for me to mess with the law over it. I just want people to enjoy my work. What kind of challenges have you faced? It took a long while to convince people that this was actually art and that it was worthwhile. There's a stigma about graffiti as just being defacement, but I worked hard to show people what it can be. I even got the art of graffiti involved in festivals in Al Ahsa and now not a year goes by that they don't invite me to showcase my work. Why graffiti instead of other forms?I used to draw, do car art and things of that nature. Then I got to know a guy in Riyadh, by the nickname of Sam, who mentored me in graffiti five years ago. I’ve been hooked ever since.

In Memory of a TREASURE HUNTERDiscover Al Amriah Gallery, one man’s passion to capture the past.By Noura Al Joaib

Home to Al Amer ‘s prized collection, Al Amriah Gallery is located in the Rakah neighborhood of Khobar, surrounded by nondescript homes. The exterior of this home-turned-gallery is already teaser of things to come. Upon entering through the wide gate, you’re instantly welcomed by a canopy-like structure with

There’s an old saying that goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Seeing beauty in the mundane and worth in the worthless, the late Mohammed Al Amer was, in every sense of the word, a treasure hunter.

Al Amer made it his life’s mission to explore and collect. His private collection, a culmination of many travels far and wide, is a wonder to behold and a reflection of his wanderlust and arcane sense of exploration.

radio, there is something to marvel at for everyone. Situated in the garden area is one of the gallery’s most popular attractions: a dhow converted to a home for the ever-expanding treasure trove.

Another personal favorite is the hall containing semi-precious rocks of all shapes, from stones to slabs, all shipped (with extreme care) from across the

globe. A collection of vintage telephones can also be found, most prized of which is a telephone handset that was once owned by former Egyptian president Anwar Al Sadat.

Al Amer was also a lover of film, particularly the golden age of Arabic films. This love has translated into a whole area dedicated to an extensive collection of movie posters and various camera equipment.

Al Amriah Gallery is the perfect place to get lost in and discover all its nooks and crannies. It’s a place to wander and wonder and a place to walk through history and behold the life of an explorer.

Saying no to bogus hunger pains.By Amal Al Toaimi

Feeling hungry is your body’s way of telling you it needs fuel to function. However, I’m referring to the days when you just finished lunch, but half an hour later you feel hungry again. Common reasons you’re always feeling the need to munch.

1. You Are Not Eating Enough“When your stomach is empty for too long, your body will release more ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone, leaving you feeling famished,” said Amanda Foti, M.S., R.D., a senior dietitian at Selvera Wellness; this results in overeating. Try eating a healthy meal or snack every three to four hours.

Why You JustCan’t Stop Eating

2. You Are Eating Too Many Carbs and SugarsEating carbohydrates and sugar will make it almost impossible to feel satisfied. These carbs give you a sugar rush and a burst of energy and then crash, causing your body to crave more; a continuous cycle of dissatisfaction. Try pairing carbs with protein and healthy fat.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G

3. You’re StressedStress increases the body’s production of the hormone cortisol, which increases appetite. Research and studies found that stress increases sugary and fatty food cravings. These foods will comfort you momentarily, but will increase your snack cravings. Try joining a gym class or walking instead. ST

65DESTINATIONKSA.COM

6. You’re Not Eating the Right Balance of NutrientsYour snack or meal should have three components: protein, fiber and healthy fat. Together they help slow digestion, keeping blood sugar stable and keeping you fuller for longer.

5. You’re Not Considering What You’re EatingEating sensibly means paying attention to what you’re eating instead of just chowing it down. Chew your food slowly, picking the most nutritious and filling items.

7. You’re Not Getting Enough ZZZZSleep is linked to two hunger hormones, leptin and ghrelin. Leptin decreases appetite and ghrelin increases it. When you are not sleeping enough, leptin drops and ghrelin soars; making you hungry. Aim for eight hours minimum of rest per night.

4. You Are Not Drinking Enough H2OSometimes our bodies mistake hunger for dehydration. When you feel hungry, drink a cup of water; if after half an hour you’re still hungry then you should grab a snack. Always keep a water bottle with you.

8. You’re Suffering From a Medical ConditionIf you’ve tried the above and you’re still at “can’t stop, won’t stop,” then it’s yourcue to visit a doctor. Some health issues that affecthunger can be hyperthyroidism, depression, diabetes and anxiety.

For example, we can often find two kinds of avocados in our local grocery stores: those that are grown internationally and imported (often from the US) and those that are grown locally and tend to cost a fourth of the imported ones. Buying local saves money, supports our local economy and supports a reduction of the fossil fuel consumption required to bring international goods to our local stores. So, buying local is a more sustainable choice.

In Sharqiya I’ve found one farm, Al Buti Farms, that’s local, sustainable and also certified as organic by both the Ministry of Agriculture and an international company overseas. For a good example of a sustainable local farm, Nidal farms are also in Sharqiya and they use non-GMO seeds and no pesticides. They’re impressively sustainable because they are a leading farm in the country for using advanced water conservation methods of farming, but they’re not organic because, even though they use non-GMO seeds and no pesticides, they don’t use organic fertilizer. Still, they are an excellent farm to support and buy from.

Organic standards are very strict worldwide and are hard to meet, so sustainability is often the best we can hope for and sometimes organic is not sustainable. This means we either support our local

and global environment.

In a nutshell: organic produce has to

communities or organic communities internationally.

Personally I use both Al Buti and Nidal farms for my produce, depending on my needs. I believe in supporting our local farms as much as possible, especially when these farms support the environment, because it supports our local economies, farmers, sustainability principles and organic standards. We cannot live in isolation, nor do we want to. Buying local produce is often a win-win for a community and what is best for all is often best for the individual.

Traveling around the world is a very spiritual experience, as we get to witness the beauty of Earth and the people in it. Beauty has a different meaning for each one of us, and if we look close enough, everything has its own beauty.“And we have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars.” Qur’an (67: 5)

The people around us are alluring in their own unique way. Someone’s voice and someone’s natural smell might be beautiful if not their face or hair.

Also Allah has created everything with a purpose and that little worm, which we trampled on this morning must have served some purpose in balancing our ecosystem. Every human is important, even the cruelest of them; without them we wouldn’t know that we shouldn’t be like them and should work to be better persons. We are interlinked and interconnected with every living creature on this earth, and so we should take time to appreciate the beauty and be thankful for every single thing that Allah has bestowed upon us. So travel, explore and observe, even if you only get to see outside your window, remember Allah in whatever you see. Remember Allah and Allah will remember you. The Poor GLUTEN StoryRead and make an informed decision.By Maha Al Jawini, Health Couture

Most of us have heard of the term “gluten” in the past decade, yet many have a pretty poor understanding of how it fits into a healthy lifestyle. Before we rush into vilifying this poor protein, let’s start with some basic information.Gluten (from Latin gluten, "glue") is an ancient and complex combination of proteins found in wheat, barley

and rye. Gluten acts like glue, holding the ingredients together and giving texture, elasticity and shape to dough.

The DilemmaGluten in its purest form is clean, but why do many people avoid eating it regardless? Wheat and other grains have been stripped of their nutritional value through

Also, gluten is used as a thickening agent in a large number of highly processed and unhealthy food items such as sauces, condiments, packaged soups and high-sugar pastries. Naturally, by avoiding highly processed food you will end

Following a clean lifestyle involves choosing natural over processed whether it contains gluten or not.

Making the ChoiceWhether a lifestyle choice or a health requirement, gluten is a critical topic that requires constant research, professional help, cautious label reading and making natural choices. Most importantly is aiming for balance by listening to your own body requirements rather than fashionable diet hypes.

For people choosing a gluten-free diet as a lifestyle choice, there are several hidden ingredients they should be aware of.

If a product is gluten-free or low-carb, it does not automatically mean it’s healthy. Every country has its diversity, but South Africa gives the term a new meaning.Story by Otbah Rayess

Our journey began when five friends from around the world decided to converge at Johannesburg, one of world’s largest urban forests. I started with taking a 7-hour flight from Jeddah.

Johannesburg is a vibrant city that has a lot to offer visitors, from historic sights of political importance, traditional ties, cultural connections, to museums, art galleries and craft makers.

T R A V E L T R E N D S

MARCH 4In Johannesburg our stay was at The Villa Royale by the Saxon. It offers tours and outdoor adventures exploring South Africa’s traditional roots, diverse cultures and lively spirit. Tours can be tailored to suit your interests and schedule.

The first day was chill. We toured the city for a while and had some African BBQ for dinner, looking forward to an exciting day.

MARCH 7We took a helicopter back to Johannesburg to catch a flight to Cape Town. There we landed at Waterfront, which is at the edge of Cape Town's charming historical harbor. We took our time discovering shopping, dining, entertainment and a host of leisure activities.Find events and activities at: onthewaterfront.co.za

MARCH 5After breakfast, it was an hour’s journey by helicopter getting to Shambala, which literally stands for paradise on Earth. Shambala Private Game Reserve is situated in the Limpopo Province, 2.5 hours’ drive north of Johannesburg or a 55-minute flight by helicopter.

Our stay was at Zulu Camp for two nights where we had delectable food and impeccable service.

The reserve provided safari rides in the wild and a riverside drive as well to see the hippos and crocodiles at

sunset. We also had the opportunity to ride

quad bikes. Nothing tops a relaxing spa and massage after a long day.

Shark Cage diving is carried out through out the year, weather dependent. The water temperature ranges between 55° and 65° F and divers take turns in the cage, each staying approximately 15-20 minutes. A diver can expect to make two to three dives per day if good weather, sea conditions, shark activity and visibility prevail.

MARCH 9The day started with delicious Ethiopian food from Addis in Cape. The place provides you with a unique dining experience right in the heart of Cape Town. From the traditional furnishings and the classic Ethiopian coffee ceremony to the serving of food itself, they offered us an exotic alternative to anything we had ever experienced.

From there we went to Bo-Kaap, a colorful neighborhood, as well

as one of the oldest and most fascinating neighborhoods in town. Known for its brightly colored houses and situated at the foot of Signal Hill, Bo-Kaap is the spiritual home of the Cape’s Muslim community.

After all the color-fest we took a car up to signal hill to watch the sunset. The view was heavenly with the city and Table Mountain on one side and the sun setting over the ocean on the other.

A must-visit neighborhood

MARCH 10Cape Town Film Studios gave us a tour around their massive sets for shows like “Black Sails” as well as film sets such as “Long Walk For Freedom.”

Later on we went to Boulders beach and spent most of the day swimming and playing with penguins. At the Boulders, penguins flock all over the place, a unique sight in Africa.

Our dinner was at an Indian restaurant called Bukhara followed by a walk around the waterfront and then we went up on the Ferris wheel.

MARCH 11Table Mountain greeted us as we ascended with the help of a cable car. It remains the most iconic landmark of South Africa. It is also the country’s most photographed attraction.

The latter part of our day was spent walking around Long Street where we sat and watched a jazz band perform live

MARCH 12We watched a rugby match between Sharks and Stormers at the Newlands Stadium. After the match, a Summer Sunset concert was held at the Kirstenbosch Gardens.

For our final day, we went to a cheetah sanctuary where we were in the company of these magnificent creatures, young and old. From there, we went to jam and wine farms to have lunch.

South Africa is by far the world’s most epic continent, and every day there holds its own allure.

The Leisurely Life by THE LAKE

Have you been to Modon Lake yet?By Afifa Quraishi

Modon Lake in Dammam is a recent addition to the list of waterfront spots that families can picnic at. If the word lake conjures up images of a tranquil setting with sparkling blue waters surrounded by lush green grass, then you

already have a good idea of what Modon Lake looks like. The lake itself spans 210 square meters (with the total area of the location hitting 400 square meters), representing the biggest artificial lake in the Kingdom.

Located in Dammam Second Industrial City, the lake was established in 2014 by the Saudi Industrial Property Authority (MODON) and inaugurated under Prince Saud bin Nayef, governor of the Eastern Province. C

Visiting on a windy Friday afternoon, we found the lake abuzz with Saudi and expat families having a great time, filled with barbecues, groups having tea and chatting it up, couples enjoying a walk by the lake and children riding their bikes and playing games. This scenic spot also works as a relaxing afternoon break

from the office for those working in the industrial area. Nestled among factories and industrial structures, Modon Lake is a recreational oasis and a much needed getaway.Make sure to pack a picnic mat, cushions and sunglasses and don’t forget to put on some sunscreen. Also, since there are no major grocery shops or restaurants here barring a very simple mart nearby, be sure to bring all the goodies you want to munch on.

Oh and if you love to read, pick up that book you’ve been meaning to tackle for ages and spend a leisurely afternoon reading by the lake. Yes, it’s just as serene as it sounds.

Highlights: Biggest artificial

lake in Saudi Arabia, gorgeous views.

Ideal for: Barbecue parties, day picnics, kids cycling.

Best Time: 4 - 7 p.m.

Don't Forget: Picnic mats, tents,

foldable chairs, sunglasses, sun lotion,

and of course, food!

GPS Coordinates: 26.2263° N, 49.9745° E

Arabia’s very own Atlantis discovered.

The legacy of Arabia and its people is priceless and their momentous achievements include an ancient city that’s still holding up against the test of time. Al Faw, The Kindah Kingdom’s capital, was constructed with so much sophistication and was one of

the most prolific cities in the entire peninsula.

Nestled in the foothills of the Tuwaiq Mountains in the southern part of the country, Al Faw lies 170 kilometers from the town of Wadi Al Dawasir. It sits right at the edge of the

Rub Al Khali desert and has been relatively untouched. This has safeguarded many of its ancient relics and vestiges, which is what makes the place even more special.

Page 83: DS Issue 5

The Kindahs The Kindah tribe originally hailed from what is modern day Yemen. After the demolition of the Ma’rib Dam, different tribes dependent on the dam for their livelihood, looked for resettlement elsewhere and some went as far as southern Iraq. The Kindahs, a Bedouin tribe, chose to relocate to the fertile

plains at the foothills of the Tuwaiq Mountains.

The Rise and Subsequent DemiseIt was in the first century BC, that this city was made the capital of the Kindah Kingdom. It grew to a size of 3-square kilometers and was known by many names throughout the ages including

the “Red City” and the “City of Gardens.” Sitting on the incense route, the city grew in importance commercially and economically.

Al Faw had a strong Greek influence due to the far-reaching influence of Alexander’s conquests and it, which can be seen in the Hellenistic paintings and other artifacts found in the city. This also highlights that the residents of Al Faw had interacted with distant cultures and traded widely. The paintings were in fact a revelation, as they transformed the understanding of ancient Middle Eastern art.

Al Faw and the trading route it was on, peaked in the 3rd century CE. The city continued to be inhabited till the 4th century, after which it fell into demise. There were hardly any writings from historians that even mentioned it, almost erasing all traces from history. This ancient town re-entered the history books only in

1940 when it was discovered by engineers working for Saudi Aramco. Excavations began much later in the 70s, revealing incredible finds.

TodayMany of the artifacts unearthed at Al Faw found their way to the Kingdom’s museums. Some were even displayed worldwide in the “Roads of Arabia” traveling exhibition.

In addition to artifacts, a large number of literature was found in the area. Due to their rich writing system, many finds about their ancient life were uncovered. The residents of the city wrote on a wide range of topics, from religious and commercial issues to personal matters and trade.

The archaeological excavations revealed a planned city that has paved roads and allotted areas for markets, wells, cemeteries and places of worship. There is a lot more to be excavated and only time will tell what mysteries will be

unearthed at this city that has baffled historians.

The area has been fenced and many of the sites in it cannot be reached. A road from Wadi Al Dawsier takes you to a stone’s throw distance from Qaryat Al Faw. There are plans by the authorities to open the ancient town to the public. Visitors who go to the site today can see a good portion of the ancient town from outside the fences.

Bahrain is a land rich with ancient history, having shown first signs of settlement around 4,500 years ago. Amidst the modernity of villas, buildings, compounds and the beautiful skyline decorated with high-rises, this land has seen ancient civilizations come and go. Within every city in Bahrain, there is a glimmer of this rich history that has been discovered or waiting to be discovered.

The fort and the ancient city next to it have been witnesses to the periods of Dilmun, Tylos, Islamic era and Portuguese rule. Within the ruins, excavations have revealed three consecutive Dilmun cities as well as a Greek city. Residential, public, commercial and military structures have been discovered and antiquities found on the sites are on display in the museum next door.
