Put on your bright colors and skeleton make-up and join the fun on Starr Street for the 4th An-nual Dia de los Muertos Festival Dia de los Muertos Street Festival is held in the 400 amp 500 blocks of Starr Street in Downtown Corpus Christi e event kicks o Friday October 28 at 4 pm with a parade to the community altar where a new mural by Ricardo Ruiz Ger-ald Lopez Jimmy Pena and Da-vid Phillips will be unveiled e festival includes live music Ma-riachis Folklorico dancers Art Expo Kidsrsquo Activities commu-nity altar food drinks and more

e lead sponsor for this yearrsquos event is Andrews Distributing Company e 2011 Dia de los Muertos Street Festival features dance performances and live mu-sic including Mariachi Del Mar and six folklorico dance compa-nies Early in the evening guests will be entertained by Libre Latin Talk and Sonidos del Barrio At 10 pm Pintildeata Protest takes the stage followed by Corpus Christirsquos own Master Blaster Sound Sys-tem

El Dia de los Muertos (or Day of the Dead) is a traditional holi-day in Mexico (Nov 1 amp 2) dur-ing which deceased friends and

family members are remembered and celebrated In the arts every-day life is represented in skeletal form Traditional activities in-clude making sugar skulls bak-ing pan de muerto (sweet bread) and creating ofrendas (altars) that honor the deceased using photos memorabilia sugar skulls mari-golds and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed A com-mon symbol of Dia de los Muer-tos is the skull or calavera o en represented in masks candy and other Dia de los Muertos curios

Everyone is encouraged to wear a costume Door Prizes and an Award for Best Costume will be given away Many of Corpus Christirsquos favorite artists will be on hand selling their work and El Dia de los Muertos themed items

Special additions for 2011 are the Kidsrsquo Corner and a sec-

ond stage starring Mariachi Del Mar (Del Mar College Mariachi Band) Another new addition is the Extravagancia de Pintildeatas sponsored by NuStar Energy Ex-travagancia de Pintildeatas is a contest for area K-12 schools (groupsart classesart clubs) to compete for cash awards to be used for class-room art supplies Pintildeatas will be hanging throughout the festival e Texas A amp M University Art Departmentrsquos ldquoHold Steady Iron Pouring Crewrdquo will also be on hand o ering visitors a chance to create their own miniature iron sculpture

Featuring established and emerg-ing jazz artists from Texas and ac-claimed musicians from around the country the Texas Jazz Festival keeps people from all over Texas and beyond coming back every year At-tendance in 2010 was close to 75000 and the festival attracted many charter buses from Houston and San Antonio which brought hundreds of people and their spending power to Nueces County and specicurren cally the City of Corpus Christi

American Diabetes Associa-tion (ADA) will hold the 9th an-nual ldquoDancing rough Down-townrdquo walk on Saturday October 8th at Whataburger Field be-ginning at 730 am is yearrsquos ldquoDancing rough Downtownrdquo Walk is co-chaired by Mayor Joe Adame Police Chief Troy Riggs and Stacey Rivere with Sherwin Alumina is yearrsquos Honorary Chairman is State Representative Todd Hunter

ldquoDancing rough Down-townrdquo is a truly unique commu-nity event which began nine years ago e walk traverses the Up-town and Downtown areas and the route is lined with entertain-ment to amuse walkers e en-thusiasm for this event continues

to grow as the community comes together each year to raise aware-ness about diabetes honor those with diabetes and to raise the im-portant funds needed to curren ght the disease

ldquoWhen I was initially asked to be a part of this event for Sher-win I did not have any family or friends with diabetesrdquo said Sta-cey Rivere co-chair ldquoAs I got in-volved with fundraising for Sher-win and eventually as a co-chair I have found out I was mistaken Diabetes unfortunately is on the rise in South Texas It is only through events like Step Out and increased awareness that we can help turn those numbers around I hope to see a big community turnout at the walk on the 8th of October at Whataburger Fieldrdquo

Unique to the event this year

is ldquoLa Feria De Saludrdquo a commu-nity family festival focusing on healthy lifestyle choices to ldquoStop Diabetesrdquo It will be held on the concourse of Whataburger Field As walkers return to Whataburger curren eld they will have the opportu-nity to participate in educational presentations cooking demon-strations diabetes screenings and visit vendor booths e May-orrsquos Fitness Council and Nueces County have underwritten the costs of the diabetes screenings e festival is free and open to the community even if they do not participate in the walk

On Saturday October 8 2011 registration for the walk begins at 730 am with opening cer-emonies beginning at 800 am Walkers will get energized with a vigorous warm-up en at the

sound of the sirens joggers cy-clists and walkers will proceed to N Tancahua Street and follow the parade route as it winds through the uptown and downtown area Once again this year the parade of walkers will be led by the Down-town Management Districtrsquos brightly painted tram driven by Alan Albin Special Projects Co-ordinator On board the tram will be Dexter Dance till Dawn Entertainment to encourage and entertain walkers while an-nouncing the more-than twenty entertainment venues along the route Cheerleaders clowns folk-lorico dancers musicians rock bands jazz bands twirlers and elementary school spirit teams are among the highlights e en-tertainers generously donate their time and talents for this special Saturday morning

FIRST FRIDAY was created in 1994 by a small group of lo-cal women who came together to curren ght breast cancer in South Texas e mission of FIRST FRIDAY is ldquoTo help save lives by increasing awareness of the importance of early detection and to provide free screening mammograms for those in needrdquo e members of FIRST FRIDAY have been living and working that mission since the group was founded in 1994

FIRST FRIDAY is a volunteer organization made up of mem-bers who have been impacted by breast cancer Some are breast cancer survivors some are health care professionals some have mothers or sisters who have fought the disease some have friends who are curren ghting now Whatever their connection the

members of FIRST FRIDAY are passionate about helping those in need get the screening mam-mograms that can help save lives We host fundraising events to support our mission of providing free screening mammograms for women in need We also educate the community about the impor-tance of early detection and get-ting regular mammograms We educate the community at health fairs and through speaking at community and local events

While there is no known way to prevent breast cancer help-ing women access early detec-tion through a free screening mammogram can be essential to surviving the disease Since our inception FIRST FRIDAY has provided more than 16000 free screening mammograms to the

women of South Texas FIRST FRIDAYrsquos medical partner CHRISTUS Spohn Health Sys-tem brings together all aspects of breast cancer awareness and detection emphasizing education and community outreach

e Turkey Chase comes to Downtown

is is one of the Corpus Christi Roadrunners biggest race and fundraisers of the year It raises funds for the Special Olympics and scholarships for students in our area e Turkey Chase event has been in existence since 1981 and has been held at locations such as West Guth Park and Corpus Christi Beach It is held on anksgiving morning ( ursday November 24th) and this year will be the curren rst time it will be run through Downtown Corpus Christi e race start and curren nish will be at Lizardoz Sub and Pub 218 North Chaparral is race is the curren rst one of the running season where members can receive points for ldquoRunner of the Yearrdquo It is a four mile two loop race where competitive runners can show their true speed For recreational runners it is a run to increase their heart rate and help curren ght heart disease e event also caters for walkers with a two mile course where anyone can walk and have a great time and a 1k Kids race where children can race each other is is truly an event where families can get out and run or walk together before enjoying their anksgiving feast

e Turkey Chase attracts people from all over the United States and has been growing ev-ery year At the start of the race the average temperature is around 65 degrees which most people en-joy anksgiving races around the nation are mostly called Tur-keyTrot but being that Corpus Christ is such a unique city the Roadrunners board came up with the name ldquo e Turkey Chaserdquo

Many people who turn out for the run do so for the long sleeve T-shirts e Turkey Chase is one of the only races that gives out a long sleeve shirt in our area

Every year the Tur-key Chase has a unique challenge like the Coastal Bend Cham-pionship is year the challenge is against another anksgiving race held in Portland Maine Each City will hold a race identical in distance and as evenly matched in other as-pects as possible and e challenge will be won by the fastest runners overall If the winning runner comes from Cor-pus Christi they will win Maine Lobsters if the winner is from Portland Maine they will win Texas Steaks

e stakes are high this year so we need the best runners in the Coastal Bend to come and show their support Pre registration before November 15th costs $20 Registration a er November 15th and up to November 23rd costs $25 Entries in the kids race are $15 For more information please call 1-800-682-2159
