حلفاء الأم�ص الذين كان قد قادهم اإلى اأكثر المواقف ال�سيا�سية حدة.

والختيارية الأخيرة في عملية خلط الأوراق ال�سيا�سية المحلية التي تنتظر نتائج عمليات خلط

الأوراق ال�سيا�سية الخارجية كي يف�سح في المجال اأمام انهاء ال�سغور الرئا�سي الذي �سهد اأخيرا

كما ال�سريبية التزاماتها �سداد من الجن�سيات متعددة ال�سركات

ذكرت وكالة النباء اللمانية.

واأ�سار التقرير اإلى اأن ال�سركات الكبرى الموجود مقراتها في اأ�ستراليا

زادت ا�ستثماراتها في الماذات ال�سريبية العالمية من حوالي 56،4

مليار دولر عام 2009 اإلى 79،1 مليار دولر عام .2014

من ناحيتها قالت هيلين �سزوكي الرئي�ص التنفيذي لمنظمة “اأوك�سفام

اأ�ستراليا” في بيان اإن “تقرير اأوك�سفام ي�سمل لأول مرة كم الدولرات

دولة، وتغطى تلك ال�ستطاعات 44% من �سكان العالم. ومن جانبه،

“ندعو فرى”، “ووك منظمة ورئي�ص ال�سترالى الملياردير ق��ال

على قوانين �سن اإل��ى العالم فى اقت�سادية دول 10 اأق��وى حكومات

الأقل بقوة قانون العبودية المعا�سرة البريطانى لعام 2015، بميزانية

فى للعبودية ا�ستغالهم على المنظمات محا�سبة اأن ت�سمن وكفاءة

الذي ت�ستقى منه الهداية في الإيمان والمعتقد وال�سلوك

والألفة والتوحد خ��وة الأ ومعاني

بحبل والع��ت�����س��ام وال���ت���ع���اون

اأي تزخر بالأ�س�ص المعنوية التي تجعل من جماعة اهلل،

الم�سلمين اأمة واحدة في معتقدها وح�سارتها ومقومات

وجودها.

اإلى تدعو التي القراآنية الآي��ات وتنوعت تعددت ولقد

الوحدة، وتحث على التنا�سر والتكتل والتكامل والت�سامن

بين الم�سلمين .. ومن ذلك:

للتلقي الأول المنبع ه��و ال��ك��ري��م ال���ق���راآن ك���ان واإذا

ما هو �ل�سدق؟

ال�سدق هو قول الحق ومطابقة الكام للواقع. وقد اأمر اهلل -تعالى- بال�سدق، فقال: {يا

اأيها الذين اآمنوا اتقوا اهلل وكونوا مع ال�سادقين} التوبة: 119.

�سدق �هلل:

يقول اهلل تعالى: {ومن اأ�سدق من اهلل قيا} الن�ساء: 122، فا اأحد اأ�سدق منه قول، واأ�سدق الحديث

كتاب اهلل -تعالى-. وقال تعالى: {هذا ما وعدنا اهلل ور�سوله و�سدق اهلل ور�سوله} الأحزاب: 22.

�سدق �لأنبياء:

اأثنى اهلل على كثير من اأنبيائه بال�سدق، فقال تعالى عن نبي اهلل اإبراهيم: {واذكر في الكتاب اإبراهيم

اإنه كان �سديقا نبيا} مريم: 41.

وقال اهلل تعالى عن اإ�سماعيل: {واذكر في الكتاب اإ�سماعيل اإنه كان �سادق الوعد وكان ر�سول نبيا}

مريم: 54.

وقال اهلل تعالى عن يو�سف: {يو�سف اأيها ال�سديق} يو�سف: 46.

وقال تعالى عن اإدري�ص: {واذكر في الكتاب اإدري�ص اإنه كان �سديقا نبيا} مريم: 56.

وكان ال�سدق �سفة لزمة للر�سول �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم، وكان قومه ينادونه بال�سادق الأمين، ولقد قالت

دق الحديث.. له ال�سيدة خديجة -ر�سي اهلل عنها- عند نزول الوحي عليه: اإنك لت�س

�أنو�ع �ل�سدق:

الم�سلم يكون �سادقا مع اهلل و�سادقا مع النا�ص و�سادقا مع نف�سه.

ال�سدق مع اهلل: وذلك باإخا�ص الأعمال كلها هلل، فا يكون فيها رياء ول �سمعة، فمن عمل عما لم

حقها باإعطائها الطاعات جميع في يخل�ص والم�سلم عمله، منه اهلل يتقبل لم هلل النية فيه يخل�ص

واأدائها على الوجه المطلوب منه.

ال�سدق مع النا�ص: فا يكذب الم�سلم في حديثه مع الآخرين، وقد روي اأن النبي �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم

ق، واأنت له كاذب( اأحمد. ث اأخاك حديثا، هو لك م�سد قال: )كبرت خيانة اأن تحد

ال�سدق مع النف�ص: فالم�سلم ال�سادق ل يخدع نف�سه، ويعترف بعيوبه واأخطائه وي�سححها، فهو يعلم

اأن ال�سدق طريق النجاة، قال �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم: )دع ما يريبك اإلى ما ل يريبك، فاإن الكذب ريبة

وال�سدق طماأنينة( الترمذي.

ف�سل �ل�سدق:

اأثنى اهلل على ال�سادقين باأنهم هم المتقون اأ�سحاب الجنة، جزاء لهم على �سدقهم، فقال تعالى: {

اأولئك الذين �سدقوا واأولئك هم المتقون} البقرة: 177.

وقال تعالى: {قال اهلل هذا يوم ينفع ال�سادقين �سدقهم لهم جنات تجري من تحتها الأنهار خالدين

فيها اأبدا ر�سي اهلل عنهم ور�سوا عنه ذلك الفوز العظيم} المائدة: 119.

وال�سدق طماأنينة، ومنجاة في الدنيا والآخرة، قال �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم: )تحروا ال�سدق واإن راأيتم اأن

فيه الهلكة، فاإن فيه النجاة( ابن اأبي الدنيا.

ويقول النبي �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم: )اإن ال�سدق يهدي اإلى البر، واإن البر يهدي اإلى الجنة، واإن الرجل

يقا، واإن الكذب يهدي اإلى الفجور، واإن الفجور يهدي اإلى النار، واإن د دق؛ حتى يكتب عند اهلل �س لي�س

الرجل ليكذب، حتى يكتب عند اهلل كذابا( متفق عليه.

فاأحرى بكل م�سلم واأجدر به اأن يتاأ�سى بر�سول اهلل �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم في �سدقه، واأن يجعل ال�سدق

�سفة دائمة له، وما اأجمل قول ال�ساعر:

ح�رقك ال�سدق بن�ار الوع�ي�دعليك بال�س�دق ول��و اأن���ه اأ

�سق�ي الوري من اأ�سخط المولي واأر�سي العبي��دوابغ ر�س�ا الم�ولي، فاأ

دت مع��ت�اد د ل�س�انك قول ال�سدق تحظ به اإن الل�س�ان لم��ا ع�و وقال ال�ساعر:وع�و

�لكذب:

اأن يقول الإن�سان كاما خاف الحق والواقع، وهو عامة من عامات النفاق، يقول النبي �سلى وهو

ث كذب، واإذا وعد اأخلف، واإذا ائتمن خان( متفق عليه. اهلل عليه و�سلم: )اآية المنافق ثاث: اإذا حد

والموؤمن الحق ل يكذب اأبدا، فقد �سئل النبي �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم: اأيكون الموؤمن جبانا؟ قال: )نعم(.

قيل: اأيكون الموؤمن بخيا؟ قال: )نعم(.

قيل: اأيكون الموؤمن كذابا؟ قال: )ل(. مالك.

والكذاب ل ي�ستطيع اأن يداري كذبه اأو ينكره، بل اإن الكذب يظهر عليه، قال الإمام علي: ما اأ�سمر اأحد

�سيئا اإل ظهر في فلتات ل�سانه و�سفحات وجهه.

ولي�ص هناك كذب اأبي�ص وكذب اأ�سود، اأو كذب �سغير وكذب كبير، فكل الكذب مكروه منبوذ، والم�سلم

يحا�سب على كذبه ويعاقب عليه، حتى ولو كان �سغيرا، وقد قالت ال�سيدة اأ�سماء بنت يزيد -ر�سي اهلل

عنها- لر�سول اهلل �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم: يا ر�سول اهلل، اإذا قالت اإحدانا ل�سيء ت�ستهيه: ل اأ�ستهيه، يعد

ذلك كذبا؟ فقال �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم: )اإن الكذب يكتب كذبا، حتى تكتب الكذيبة كذيبة( اأحمد.

وعن عبد اهلل بن عامر -ر�سي اهلل عنه- قال: دعتني اأمي يوما -ور�سول اهلل �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم قاعد

في بيتنا- فقالت: تعال اأعطك، فقال لها: )ما اأردت اأن تعطيه؟(. قالت: اأردت اأن اأعطيه تمرا. فقال

النبي �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم: )اأما اإنك لو لم تعطه �سيئا كتبت عليك كذبة( اأبوداود.

�لم�سلم ل يكذب في �لمدح �أو �لمز�ح:

ر النبي �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم اأنا�سا منافقين يمدحون من اأمامهم ولو كذبا، فقال �سلى اهلل عليه وقد حذ

و�سلم: )اإذا راأيتم المداحين فاحثوا في وجوههم التراب( م�سلم.

وهناك اأنا�ص يريدون اأن ي�سحكوا النا�ص؛ فيكذبون من اأجل اإ�سحاكهم، وقد نهى النبي �سلى اهلل عليه

ث بالحديث لي�سحك به القوم؛ فيكذب، ويل له، ويل له( الترمذي. و�سلم عن ذلك فقال: )ويل للذي يحد

ا، وقال �سلى اهلل عليه و�سلم: )اأنا زعيم بيت في رب�ص الجنة )اأطرافها( لمن ترك المراء واإن كان محق

وبيت في و�سط الجنة لمن ترك الكذب واإن كان مازحا، وبيت في اأعلى الجنة لمن ح�سن خلقه( اأبوداود.

الح�سن درجة اإلى يرتقي ال�سعيف

لغيره باأمرين هما:

فاأكثر، اآخر طريق من يروى اأي اأ(

اأو على اأن يكون الطريق الآخر مثله

اأقوى منه.

في انقطاع اأو راويه حفظ �سوء اإما

�سنده اأو جهالة في رجاله.

البع�ص كجزء من “طقو�ص القبول” في الجي�ص الأ�سترالي والتي تعود

الثاثاء اأ�سترالية، اإلى عام 1960، ح�سبما عر�ص على لجنة تحقيق

21 يوليو/حزيران.

يلزم حكما الفيدرالية المحكمة اأ���س��درت

مدر�سة بتمويل الفيدرالي التعليم وزي��ر

الملك الفهد الإ�سامية لحمايتها من خطر

القفال.

قد بريمنغهام �سيمون الفيدرالي التعليم وزي��ر وك��ان

اأ�سدر في وقت �سابق من هذه ال�سنة قرارا باإلغاء التمويل

ال�سنوي للمدر�سة والذي يبلغ 19مليون دولر بعد اتهامها

بالقيام ممار�سات ربحية.

وكانت محكمة ال�ستئناف الإدارية قد اأ�سدرت في اأبريل

على المدر�سة بح�سول يق�سي موؤقتا ق��رارا الما�سي

التمويل لحين الف�سل الق�سائي النهائي في الق�سية.

وامر القا�سي “�ستيفن ريرز” وزير التعليم باتخاذ كافة

الإجراءات الممكنة لاإفراج عن 5.2 مليون دولر

و�سفها ل��ل��م��در���س��ة،وال��ت��ي المخ�س�ص ال��ت��م��وي��ل م��ن

فورا”. دفعها يجب وال��ت��ي م�ستحقة “بالمدفوعات ملزم الوزير فاإن نظري القا�سي” “من وجهة واأ�ساف

فورا بالإفراج عن م�ستحقات اأبريل التي تم تاأجيلها”.

وكان الم�ست�سار القانوني لوزارة التعليم �ستيفن فري كان

التمويل بدفع الوزير اإل��زام اأن �سابق وقت في ذكر قد

On Thursday, 23rd June 2016, Pinnacle College, Multicultural Youth Education Support Services (McYess Ltd) and Intercultural Dialogue Society (IDS)

hosted their Annual Ramadan Iftar Dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Several notable guests attended the fourth iteration of this special event including the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Hon Zoe Bettison, Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Mr John Gardner, the Chairperson of SA Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs, Hon Grace Portolesi, and the Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide, Philip Wilson. Each delivered warm

speeches encouraging dialogue and understanding, while recognising the importance of the month of Ramadan to the spiritual lives of the Muslim community. Mrs Zuleyha Keskin, the Course Coordinator at the Islamic Science and Research Academy (ISRA), delivered the keynote speech, outlining the key aspects and benefits of this holy month. For the first time, Hakan Akhan, President of IDS, passed on Master of Ceremony duties to his daughter Aylin, a recent graduate of Pinnacle College, who achieved a 99.7 for her university selection ranking in 2015. This year’s event also introduced the Peace, Dialogue, and Harmony

awards, presented by Senator Anne McEwen. GIFT OF KINDNESS

Perhaps, like me, you too have heard someone say, “I don’t regret anything in life. It’s because of everything I have been through, that I have become who I am today.” It seems stylish, trendy even, to refer to your

past, not-so-pretty experiences this way.Such a statement is deemed fair if the consequences of your decisions did not cause distress to others. The notion “I don’t regret anything in life” implies that “Regret is uncalled for”, seems to be in tandem with positive thinking, more in line with feeling good about yourself, an indication of a healthy self-esteem.Point taken. But can we say that Regret is all bad?Like it or not, there will always be moments when you and I did or said things which, on hindsight, we should never have.Take a few weeks ago, for instance. It happened as I entered a large shopping centre. I caught sight of a young family with two little children, a girl and a boy, begging nearby. They looked miserable, all four of them, prompting me to think that it might be a good idea to grab something edible for them on my way out.Then I realised I had just about enough money to buy a meal for my son, waiting for his lunch at home.Later, I mentioned about the family to my husband. “Maybe you should have gotten them a half chicken,” he said. He had hardly finished his sentence when Regret came knocking at the door. I had hoped that my other half would say something that could lighten me up, but instead I felt none the better.To be honest, this wasn’t the only time I wasn’t proud of myself. There have been one incident too many I wished I had acted kinder, wiser, better.Like the time when my eldest son was little, I scolded him for knocking down a cup of water, slightly to his right on the table in front of him. I had no idea then, that my son could not see it, literally.So, where do we go from here?Suppose you knew your words and actions have hurt someone for no good reason, yet you say, “I don’t regret it.” This is not just idiotic, obviously, but plain irresponsible. In this case, Regret can do you good, pushing you to ask for forgiveness, act in a way to correct what is wrong.Regret helps you to wise up in life.Of course, too much Regret can be harmful. You could be overwhelmed with so much Regret that you loathe yourself, unable to see a single point of good that might have been created out of that experience. Too much Regret can be crippling, a downward spiral to depression, a deep dark abyss, a Point of No Return.We need to teach our children that every emotion that God allows us to experience has a function. Regret is one of those emotions that can guide us back to behaving right, a moral compass. Regret helps ensure your child accept accountability over his negative words and actions, with the firm intention of never repeating his misbehaviour.So, be careful what you say to your children about Regret. Don’t simply parrot what you hear others say, just because it seems fashionable or the “in-thing”.As parents, we do not want our children to spend a lifetime wallowing in Regret over past words, actions or decisions. We must know the difference between positive and negative Regret, realise that Regret does have value and can motivate us to change for the better, become a kinder person. The secret is to strike a healthy dose. Balance is key.

“In Praise of Positive Regret…”

Reading through the edition of Ramadan of Al Wasat Newspaper, I

was astonished by the number of greetings sent to the Muslim community by both Muslims and non-Muslims. Hence, the month of Ramadan and the concept of fasting are the symbol of unity between people of all faiths. Ramadan is thus the time of harmony, solidarity and the birth of the Abrahamic religions.

According to a hadith in the book Musnad (4/107) the scriptures of the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) were brought down on the first night of Ramadan, the Torah, on the sixth night, the Bible, on the thirteenth night, the Psalms on the eighteenth night and the Qur’an on the twenty-fourth night of Ramadan. Also, the tradition of fasting was prescribed as the Qur’an tells us, for all Abrahamic traditions before Islam: “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may learn piety and righteousness” (Qur’an 2:184). Therefore, to fast is to participate in the history of all Abrahamic religions since the concept of fasting resonates with these faiths. As the fasting month returns each year, we too must deepen our understanding of what the

school of Ramadan teaches us. During this month, Muslims relate and bond with people of other faiths according to the above common factors. The month of Ramadan carries with it this fundamental teaching of solidarity and shows the beauty of Islam to the non-Muslim majority in many ways:Firstly, the tradition of inviting our non-Muslim friends and colleagues for the fast breaking meal is a beautiful practice when we share the common spiritual factors amongst us in a delighted, peaceful and warm atmosphere.Secondly, Muslims give priority to acts of charity and caring and the recipients of our donations and love are not just Muslims but also the non-Muslims benefit from them. Thirdly, the month of Ramadan

teaches us the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood which unite and create bond amid Muslims and non-Muslims. These acts thus, strengthen humanity above any differences.Muslims spend thirty days in the company of this blessed month when they do the best to cultivate will power, discipline and self-restraint. Moreover, the objective of fasting is piety (Taqwa). Taqwa is to keep one’s desires under control and to keep oneself safe from emotional disorder. From this, it is evident that fasting has become a spiritual treatment as it transforms a human being to an angelic being. Thus, one tries to attain the status of angels for that short while at least. Because the duty of an angel is only the obedience and worship of God (swt), a human being should also regard this to be the objective and duty of his/her own life for that period. While it is natural to eat and drink, we are preventing ourselves from this natural desire and negating the self-made needs in order to come closer to our Creator. On this account, if a dividing line is to be drawn separating angels from human beings, this will be the human desires.Beyond materialistic needs, fasting requires us to come closer to ourselves and to recognise our limits: we must, throughout this journey mediate, contemplate, reflect

on the meaning of fasting and purify our hearts. Seen in this light, the fast calls into rethinking the quality of our relationships with our fellow human beings and to serve all those imprisoned by poverty, injustice or ignorance. Proceeding further, the Holy Qur’an has elucidated the purpose of fasting in Islam:“Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.” (Quran 2:185).In calling upon us to master our desires and to think about others, the fast calls into questions that we should answer: Can we free ourselves from materialistic desires? How are we to find our way to a deeper humanitarian journey, and to move beyond what we crave? What does it mean to give generously? Truly to fast is to worship; to worship is to love.

Our international reputation is being seriously damaged by the Lab-Lib consensus on treatment of asylum seekers. International media organisations are regularly carrying stories about our offshore concentration camps and those countries in the Middle East and Europe with hundreds of thousands of refugees, some with millions, are seeing the very dirty underside of Australian political culture. The disreputable Likud Israel and Baath Party Iraq do outrank us in infamy, but given time and continued LNP rule, we might just get there.Al Jazeera reported 30 May 2016: “For those on Nauru, the long and indefinite detention has taken a toll. There has been a recent spate of suicides and attempted suicides on the island. One immigration department report obtained by Australia’s Fairfax media showed that in July 2015 there were 188 incidents of self-harm on Nauru, an average of one every two days.” It went on to mention suicides and attempted suicides of detainees.On 12 June Al Jazeera returned to the matter, mentioning how the Australian Federal Police have been intimidating and harassing journalists who have worked with whistleblowers, trying to find their sources. It pointed out that under the Border Force Act offending journalists can be jailed but despite this, there are Australian journalists and insiders in the camps brave enough to blow the whistle. At least we are not portrayed as a nation of cowards.Max Costello, a former WorkSafe Victoria prosecuting solicitor argues that our government is criminally liable for Manus and Nauru. He co-authored submissions on Work Health and Safety Act 2011 issues for the Senate Select Committee on Nauru abuses. Immigration Ministers Morrison and Dutton have repeatedly claimed that the governments of Papua New Guinea and Nauru are responsible for Regional Processing Centre health and safety. Thus suicides and self harm of inmates are not “our” responsibility. [16 June 2016 Independent Australia]He blasts this out of the water with his reference to an Immigration Department booklet “Manus Island-a living and working guide” presented in 2014 to a Senate Committee. This plainly states that the WHS Act applies extraterritorially and that workers are thus required to take reasonable care that their “acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of other persons.” The ‘other persons’ are the detainees. It is possible that public servants could face court over the death of the asylum seeker.The false claims that we have no responsibility for the detainees have been exposed. Certain of our leaders have been lecturing China, quite recently, upon the importance of commitment to ‘the rule of law.’ Once again we have been shown to lack substance. Our international reputation continues to decline. We should be embarrassed.

Arabic-speaking women are being encouraged to have a potentially

lifesaving mammogram and community leaders are highlighting the importance of breast screening and discussing the cultural barriers that exist for Arabic-speaking women. Only one third (38.4%) of Arabic-speaking women aged 50-74, have their recommended mammogram every two years, significantly fewer than women aged 50-74 in general.A common barrier to regular screening is the belief that breast cancer is hereditary - in fact, 90 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history. Another common myth among women from Arabic-speaking communities is that mammograms expose you to a dangerous amount of radiation, with some advising that they believed the mammogram itself can give a woman breast

cancer. Actually, modern mammography machines use the smallest amount of radiation possible while still getting a high quality x-ray picture.As a Multicultural Health Worker, Ms Seham Gerges has seen many women diagnosed with cancer and witnessed first-hand the positive experiences of early detection.“One lady in my community had no pain, no family history, no symptoms, but because they discovered her breast cancer with a breast screen, they were able to treat it and save her life.”Ms Maha Abdo, a prominent leader in the Muslim community and 2015 NSW Human Rights Ambassador, urges women to look after their health by ensuring they get regular breast screens. “You have a responsibility over your body, to ensure it is nurtured and nourished. Your body is a sacred entity and you must look after it,” says Ms

Abdo. She emphasises that all of the radiographers at BreastScreen NSW centres and vans are women and Arabic-speaking women should not be concerned about getting a breast screen. “Many women are very hesitant about getting a mammogram but the radiographers, all of whom are women, are very understanding and make you feel very comfortable.” BreastScreen NSW offers free mammograms in over 200 screening locations across NSW. Free interpreter assistance is available for telephone bookings by calling 13 14 50. Group bookings can also be arranged and free interpreters can be organised to attend group appointments.

Dr Dzavid Haveric

Dr Dzavid Haveric (PhD Vic Uni., MA Deakin Uni.) is originally from the city of Sarajevo

in Bosnia and Herzegovina from an old and distinguished Bosnian Muslim family. Since his arrival in Australia, he became an active member of the Bosnian Muslim community and various multiethnic and multicultural organisations.Dr Haveric is an Australian researcher and historian focusing on Islamic history in Australia, Islamic civilisation, Australian Muslim identities, Sufism and interfaith dialogue, cultural- religious diversity, multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism. He is currently an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Centre for Islamic Science and Civilisation, Charles Sturt University and a Research Associate at the Museum Victoria, Humanities Department. He has worked as a Project Officer and Program Assistant at the Parliament of the World’s Religions (PWR - Melbourne) within the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC). He was a Research Assistant and Project Worker at the Institute for Community, Ethnicity and Policy Alternatives (ICEPA), Victoria University. There he worked on projects titled Multifaith Cohesion in Victoria and Evaluation of the Refugee Brokerage Program. He also worked as a reporter at the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Radio Program for the Bosnian Community and as a Journalist for Bosnian community newspapers.

He is doing socio-historical research for almost twenty years. Dr Dzavid Haveric has written widely and influentially on Islamic history and cultural religious diversity both in formal academic works and in media contribution. He is the author of several books including: Islam and pluralism within the West: A collection of essays (2014); The Australian Minaret: Outline of the periodicals published from 1961 to 1971 (2013); History of the Muslim Discovery of the World: Islamic civilisation within the plurality of civilisations (2012); Australia in Muslim Discovery: historical rediscovering of Australia by non-Muslims and Muslims (2006 and 2007); Islamisation of Bosnia: Early Islamic Influence on Bosnian Society (2008); and Bosnian Muslims in Australia: A Historical Overview (1999).

Although the first Muslim trading settlement on Aceh was established in

674 CE, the Hindu empires of Srivijaya and Kalinga on Sumatra, and then the Majapahit Empire on Java, dominated the Indonesian islands until the 1500s. Muslim merchants established trading posts across what is now Indonesia, Malaysia , Brunei and the Philippines when forced to temporarily withdraw from China as the change of dynasty

occurred in the late 800s.Over the period from 674 to the 1600s, Islam spread throughout Southeast Asia, peacefully and slowly. One theory is that this was due to Islamically well educated Muslim traders marrying local wives, raising large families which, through marriage, took their influence into the ruling families of the region. This meant that the actual teaching of the Islamic message was carried out by local Muslims, not foreigners. There was slow but steady progress in the spread of the faith. The presence of Muslim traders, with links to China, India, the Middle East and East Africa brought wealth to the principalities in which they were located. Wealth also meant increased independence from the dominant Majapahit Empire in Java and Sumatra. Conversely, a prince who mistreated the Muslim traders could be boycotted and ruined. The Portuguese imperialists experienced this when they took Malacca in 1511, the main theological centre of the region. They were religious

fanatics who tried to impose their ways upon all and sundry, so the Muslim merchants withdrew to Pasai in Sumatra, where they were protected by the powerful Kingdom of Aceh.However this political theory does not explain why Islam became so deeply embedded in the people down to the village level, unlike Buddhism and Hinduism which had been affairs of the ruling class. 300 years of European colonialism could not extinguish Islam, despite the activities of Christian missionaries who accompanied the various European rulers.By the 1500s Islam had become identified as being of the people. The Muslims who carried out Islamic dawah were locals. They fully understood their own culture and language. They identified with their compatriots. No Muslims, foreign or local, showed any interest in taking control of territories or plundering their natural resources. This contrasted starkly with European practice and the form of slavery they introduced. Islam became a

uniting force against the ruthless foreigners who exploited them.The presence of Muslim traders and their families, aware of their faith, the indigenous nature of the Islamic dawah carried out, and the political benefits of having a trading post in a principality, appear to have combined to produce a social transformation. The appeal of Islam was so strong that centuries of oppressive foreign rule were powerless to weaken it. Once the culture and awareness of Islam had penetrated a community, over about 40 years, it could not be rolled back. The atrocities of the Portuguese and the Dutch actually strengthened it, except in those areas where Islam had only recently been introduced. The Spanish occupied northern Philippines was also lost, as Islam was new and had not yet transformed the society. Mindanao was different.

Jack Akbar was aged 14 when he arrived in Australia with his father in 1890. He

helped his father with looking after the camels on various expeditions and deliveries that camels were used for in Western Australia at the time.The camel industry was the road lorries of the time, just as road trains run from across the Nullabor and up and down the Stuart Highway to Darwin and Port Augusta today, the camel trains did the same only it usually took 3 months to get there and back. Jack’s father died when he was a young man and by then he became somewhat of a loner, preferring to live away from the other Afghan and Indian camel drivers. He ended up doing some hawking and delivering the government mail using camel drawn carts. It was during one of these trips a bull camel bolted and his cart turned over and pinned him underneath, he was left there for 3 days before help arrived and Jack lost the use of his left leg permanently. He ended up buying a small general store in a town called Laverton. It was here that he spotted a young Aboriginal girl named Lallie and after many years of trying, as it was theoretically against the law in WA, they eloped and got married in South Australia.

Digital age has changed the way we live, learn and think. With a

fingertip, one can access all types of online information almost about any topic. Digital technology provides students with control in respect of what they access and learn, when, where and how. However, as a result of this access to digital technology, there are claims that schools and teachers may become redundant in respect of their role in students’ learning. It is becoming obvious that the teachers’ role in the digital age is not significant as it was before. According to Stubbs (2012) “Prior to a society with ready access to all sorts of information and opinion, the teacher was the ‘font of all knowledge’. Schools held resources not readily available to the community and provided support for acquiring the content. If the teacher is the source of the knowledge, then students can never be better than their teacher”. Stubbs further states that “The advent of an information rich society enables us to ask ‘What is the point of the classroom?’ What role should the teacher take now that they are not the information providers?” Certainly the 21st Century challenges us to perform in

different ways. Learning takes different forms in the digital age, for instance face-to-face instruction is not effective anymore as it was before. Many students doing online courses achieve good results and perform very well. Many students especially in the higher education sector prefer the online method of learning. They can use i-Pads or smartphones to access online material in their preferred setting, the thing which is not possible to do in a classroom setting through face-to-face instructions.The role of the school in the digital age has been dramatically affected. “Many of our current classrooms retain the key elements of the mass education model.

Most schools are organised around teachers and facilities. Timetables drive student movement and students are expected to turn on, and off, to learning on the command of a bell. In most schools the teacher controls what and how learning takes place. The capacity of students to follow a passion is generally not fostered by these structures” (Stubbs, 2012). Schools, therefore, need to connect beyond the traditional classroom setting; they need to connect students with all types of digital technology in order to be able to face the digital age challenges. Current generations have varied needs than those of the past generations. The workplace is changing in light of the technological advancement. The nature of current jobs heavily relies on digital technology. If current schools do not adapt to digital age requirements, then certainly they are not meeting their responsibilities in preparing their students for workforce demands. Schools; therefore, are required to provide a learning environment that is based on engaging technology. Omarsson (2014) listed a number of things that are obsolete in 21st century schools hoping that such will inspire discussions about the

future of education: • IT teachings should not be limited to a one period per week in the computer room; rather it should be taught across all learning areas• Schools need to provide Wi-Fi network for their staff and students. 21st century schools should make it possible for students and staff to learn anywhere, anytime and schools that don’t allow that are obsolete.• Taking phones and tablets from students instead of using them to enhance learning is obsolete. We should celebrate the technology students bring and use them as learning tools.• Putting a news article on the school website every month or publish a monthly newsletter is obsolete. Schools should have a Facebook page, share news and information with parents, have a Twitter account and have their own hash-tag to edit and publish things about school events. • Libraries that only contain just books are obsolete. A 21st century library should be at the heart of the school and a place where both students and staff can come in to relax, read, get advice, access powerful devices, edit videos, music, print in 3D and learn how to code to name a few. • A school that just sends the entire staff to a workshop for

professional development once a month where everyone gets same information is obsolete. Professional development should be organised and based individually where everyone gets what they want and need.Education in the digital age must offer technology based learning that will be more motivating and engaging for the students. In such a context, the learner can spend as much or as little time as they need on learning. Students may choose a variety of resources that best serve their needs. The world today and the students’ needs are different than any time before. Education in this digital age must provide opportunities to train students to work locally and globally. Andrea Schleicher (2010) suggests in this regard that: “Schools have to prepare students for jobs that have not yet been created, technologies that have not yet been invented and problems that we don’t know will arise”. Our educational systems need to be revolutionised to adapt to the challenges of the digital age which is not an easy task to

accomplish, but as S.E. Phillips suggests, “anything worth having, is worth fighting for”. Change need to be made first at the classroom level. Sir Ken Robinson has a famous saying in this regard “Education can be encouraged from the top-down but can only be improved from the ground up”.Influenced by the digital age, certainly education is witnessing transformation. It is very necessary, though, for the teachers and the educational institutions to embrace technology and to free themselves from the teacher driven classroom; otherwise “Schools will make themselves redundant unless the education that they provide is relevant, engaging and prepares students for life outside of school” (Stubbs, 2012). However, to succeed in this transformational process, educators and schools must “understand the imperatives of the technologies driving the changes in Education” (Collins & Halverson), otherwise they are welcome to join the queue of redundancy.

Industry Survey Report onAustralian Islamic Financial Services Providers

1. Preamble This is the first industry survey

on the providers of Islamic financial services in Australia. There are a number of companies providing a suite of products including Home Finance, Vehicle Finance, Islamic Superannuation, Property Fund, Managed Investment Scheme, Cash Management, Domestic Equities, International Equities, Financial Planning, Property Fund and Personal Risk Management. This level of enterprise represents a formidable industry in the Australian financial services sector. This survey covers a range of issues which would facilitate further development of this industry. These issues include legal structure of business; location of financial services provided; number of grouped entities; composition of board of directors; size of staff members; suite of products offered; gender, age group, average income and ethnicity of customers; regulatory authority and types of licenses held; Shariah advisory boards; forms of marketing undertaken; legal and professional services acquired; sponsorships of events; short term business outlook and future plans. The survey was conducted electronically over the months of February 2016 and March 2016. The questionnaire was sent to member as well as non-member entities with a request to participate in this industry survey. The response was highly representative of the industry, receiving 7 responses out of possible population of 9 entities involved with Islamic financial services in Australia.

2. Survey Data AnalysisAnalysis of data obtained through this survey is presented in what follows.

2.1 Legal Structure of Entities

Australian Islamic financial services providers are structured in a number of entity types. Company is the most common structure used, representing 77.8 per cent of all respondents. Co-operatives are represented by 11.1 per cent and there are another 11.1 percent of entities structured as trusts. No entity is found to be operating as a sole trader.

2.2 Location of Business

Approximately 43 per cent of businesses operate from more than one office, two of them have offices in 7 locations each and one has offices in 2 locations in various Australian cities across the country. The

rest (57 per cent) operates from one location each in major Australian cities. Most businesses are concentrated in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

2.3 Number of Entities in the groupTwo Islamic financial service providers (33.3 per cent) have 3 or more entities in the group, one with 6 entities and the other with 3 entities. About 40 per cent providers have 2 entities in the group. The rest (27 per cent) operate with 1 entity. The subsidiary entities are involved with different enterprises within the respective groups.

2.4 Composition of Board of Directors

The survey revealed that 71.4 per cent of Islamic finance companies have boards of directors as highest policy making bodies. The remaining companies carry out enterprise without a board of directors, where the senior management is also the policy making body for the business. Of the companies with a board of directors, 33.3 per cent have 7 members in the board and a similar percentage has 5 members in the board. The rest has 4 or less members in the board.

2.5 Managerial Staff

Only 29 per cent of respondents have 4 or more managerial staff in their management, one with 6 and the other with 4 managerial personnel. Another two respondents have 3 managerial staff each. The balance has 2 or less managerial employees.

2.6 Responsible ManagersResponsible Managers are key individuals within a business. They are to ensure that the licensee is competent to provide the financial services authorised by their Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL), prepare compliance reports and lodge them with the relevant regulators. Fifty per cent of Islamic financial services providers have 2 Responsible Managers each and the rest has 1 each.

2.7 Sales Consultants and Brokers

Sales consultants are directly involved with selling Shariah compliant financial products to customers. They are the face of the finance providers in generating revenues. Thirty three per cent of the respondents have 7 sales consultants or representatives. The remaining providers have 2 or less sales consultants on their pay roles. Only 50 per cent of the companies commission brokers in their businesses, with one company commissioning 4 brokers. The other half of the businesses has no brokerage services in their sale programs. Brokers are normally engaged in

locations where there is no physical presence however there is a demand for financial services. Some industry players engage brokers to test the market potentials prior to an organic expansion.

2.8 Customer Service Staff

Customer service is highly valued in the Australian financial services industry. Fifty per cent of the Islamic financial services providers have 4 or more customer service officers, one with 7 and others with 4 each. The remaining half of the industry employs 3 or less customer service officers. One entity was found to have no customer service staff.

2.9 Accounting and IT Staff

Twenty per cent of the Islamic financial services companies have 4 accounting staff in their businesses. Forty per cent businesses have 2 accounting staff. The rest has 1 accounting staff. Eighty per cent of the respondents have 1 information technology (IT) staff to run the IT side of their businesses. One entity was found to have no IT staff.

2.10 Marketing Staff

Thirty three per cent of Islamic Financial services providers have 2 marketing officers while 50 per cent of them have 1 marketing officer to promote their businesses. One entity was found to be without a marketing officer.

2.11 Total Number of Staff Fifty seven per cent of respondents have total number of 14 or more full time employees, one with 26 employees, one with 15 employees and two with 14 employees each. The rest has total number of 5 or less employees in their businesses. Two businesses have 1 full time employee each.

2.12 Suite of Products Offered

Players in the Islamic Financial services industry offer a wide range of products to all Australians, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. They offer Home Finance (62.5 per cent of the respondents), Vehicle Finance (25 per cent), Islamic Superannuation (25 per cent), Property Fund (25 per cent), Managed Investment Scheme (25 per cent), Cash Management Account (12.5 per cent), Domestic Equities (18.8 per cent), International Equities (12.5 per cent), Financial Planning (25 per cent) and Personal Risk Management (25 per cent). Needless to mention that Shariah compliant home finance is the most common product offered by the Islamic financial services providers in Australia.

2.13 Gender of Customers

On average, 84 per cent of Customers of Shariah compliant products are males in Australia. Only 16 per cent of them are females. Hence, the gender balance is highly skewed to male segment of the market.

2.14 Employment Status of CustomersThe survey found that 78 per cent of Customers in the Islamic Financial services industry are gainfully employed. The questionnaire didn’t concentrate on the unemployed customers (seemingly 22 per cent) who would possess financial resources to service potential liabilities

2.15 Average Customer Age Group

Customers of Shariah compliant financial services hail from a diverse age group. The highest percentage of customers is represented in the 30 to 39 age group, representing 38 per cent of all customers. The next age group of 40 to 49 represents the second highest group of customers, being 29 per cent. Seventeen per cent customers are represented by the 50 to 59 age group. Only 9 per cent customers were aged 60 and above. The age group of 20 to 29 represented 6 per cent of customers. There was only 1 customer reported from the age group of below 20.

2.16 Average Income of Customers Average income bracket of Customers is $94,500 per annum. Fifty per cent of respondents had average yearly income of over $100,000 and next half of the population had an average income of around $85,000.

2.17 Ethnicity of Customers Australian Islamic Financial services providers are engaged with a wide variety of ethnic customers. Their customers’ ethnic background includes Middle Eastern, Asian, European, African and other. This demonstrates the diversity of clientele in the Shariah compliant financial services market in Australia. Asian customers are overwhelmingly represented in this survey, being 72 per

cent of the customers, 13 per cent from Europeans and 15 per cent from other ethnic groups.

2.18 Primary Regulatory Authority All respondents from the Islamic financial services providers (100 per cent) are regulated by the Australian Investment and Securities Commission (ASIC). Some of the respondents are also regulated by the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA) for their prudential regulations.

2.19 Types of Licenses Operated The entire population of the respondents is licensed to operate in Australia by the relevant regulatory authorities. They operate under either Australian Financial Services License (AFSL) or Australian Credit License (ACL). Some respondents also have Financial Planning and Financial Broking licenses. Sixty seven per cent of businesses operate under ACL, one of them with an AFSL as well. Thirty three per cent of businesses operate under AFSL, one of them with an ACL as well. Among these respondents, 17 per cent have Financial Planning and Financial Broking licenses.

2.20 Shariah Advisory Board An in-house advisory board is defined as having own board to advise on Shariah compliance of financial services offered by an entity. Only 50 per cent of the Islamic financial services providers have in-house Shariah advisory boards. On average, they have 3 members in their boards. The other half of the respondents doesn’t have in-house Shariah advisory boards, implying that they might rely on out-sourced advice. Out-sourcing Shariah advice involves obtaining Shariah advisory services from external advisers which are available in the international Islamic financial services industry. Sixty seven per cent of providers out-source Shariah advice. The rest may possess their own resources

of Shariah advice without out-sourcing or having a board.

2.21 Marketing of Islamic Financial Services Entities involved in providing Islamic financial services in Australia undertake various forms of marketing. These include electronic media used by 83.3 per cent of the respondents, print media (50 per cent), social media (66.7 per cent), Billboards (16.7 per cent) and seminars/conference/public forums (50 per cent).

2.22 Acquisition of Professional Services Islamic financial services providers acquire a wide range of external professional services in carrying out their businesses. Legal services are acquired by 60 per cent of the respondents, accounting services (40 per cent), auditing services (40 per cent), IT services (40 per cent) and financial planning (20 per cent). No respondent was found to have acquired business development services from an external adviser.

2.23 Sponsorships and Corporate Social Responsibility The main events sponsored by the respondents generally include community functions, Eid festivals, Ramadhan breakfast programs and charity events. The average sponsorship amounts highly vary from respondent to respondent, largely depending on the size of their businesses. Twenty per cent of the respondents spend an average annual amount of $100,000. Another 20 per cent spend an average of $10,000 a year. The rest spend $3,500 or less on a yearly basis. Australian Islamic financial services providers are highly optimistic about business outlook in the next 3 years. Comments on positive commercial prospects include achieving 20 per cent growth, enhancing superannuation business, land and construction ventures and high organic growth. One business indicated to be in the winding down phase in the near future.

2.25 Future Plans In the next 5 years, all respondents (100 per cent) indicated to offer new products to the market and organically expand their businesses. Eighty three per cent of Australian Islamic financial services providers have plans to invest in their businesses and employ new staff. Other plans indicated by the respondents include global expansion and project based investments.

ICV The Australian has reported that

several Islamic organisations who have received government funding were invited to the Prime Minister’s iftar (breaking of the fast) also espoused “anti-gay, anti-women, anti-West and even radical views”.The ICV categorically rejects that assertion made about it in the article.The core of ICV funding comes from State funding to run its chaplaincy programs in Victoria. The only federal funding received in recent years was $50,000 for an organ donation programme.

ICV Secretary Kuranda Seyit said “The ICV does a tremendous amount of work in the community to build social cohesion. It’s irrelevant if ICV and the other organisations are receiving government funding. There is no correlation with community grants funding and the views towards gay people. These organisations issued a statement earlier this week which unequivocally states the position that the LGBTI community should not be subjected to discrimination or persecution“.The ICV has taken legal advice and written to The Australian newspaper’s owners with its demands.

Last week the D e p a r t m e n t assisted the Prime Minister in hosting

an Iftar dinner at Kirribilli House in Sydney.There were media reports today (22 June 2016) stating some guests refused to eat from plates previously used by non-Muslims.This allegation is completely false. The meal was prepared and served using equipment supplied by Kirribilli House and a contracted caterer. Additional equipment from the contracted caterer was only supplied due to the size of the function and not because of any religious sensitivities. There were no issues raised by guests with regards to religious sensitivities surrounding the use of crockery, cutlery or share plates.

Northern Saints / Haig Fawkner Cricket Club where guests from near and far attended the second Iftar dinner hosted by Nadeem Hussain and Wassim Rafihi. People from all walks of life attended. Guests included State Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Finance Robin Scott, Federal Labor Member for Calwell Maria Vamvakinou, Candidates for the Federal seat of Wills, Peter Khalil and Samantha Ratnam, Deputy Police Commissioner of Regional Operations, Andrew Crisp, Executive Director for Aboriginal Victoria Jason Mifsud, National Diversity Manager at the AFL Ali Fahour, Head of Community Engagement at Cricket Australia Sam Almaliki, Diversity and Inclusion Multicultural lead at the AFL Kashif Bouns, and Disability Engagement Specialist at Cricket Australia Aaron Dragwidge, along with of course committee

members, families, and players of both the Northern Saints FC and Haig Fawkner CC. Perhaps the biggest guest of all however was the 2015 ICC World Cup Trophy won by Australia which was on display for all and many memorable photos taken. After acknowledging the traditional owners of the land, the Wurundjeri people, the evening kicked off with MC for the night Rana Hussain welcoming guests and providing some context for the importance of the month of Ramadan and the significance of the evening meal, known as “iftar”. At the setting of the sun, a beautiful Adhan (call to prayer) was made to signify the breaking of the fast for the day. There was plenty of food and a few speeches to get through early on in the night. Many of the speakers praised both clubs for their ongoing support of multiculturalism, while representatives from the AFL and Cricket Australia noted both clubs were leaders in their field in hosting such an event. One of the highlights amongst the many speeches made was Jason Mifsud speaking about the similarities and

shared experiences of indigenous Australians and Australian Muslims. Jason had the entire room engaged as he spoke about the struggles both groups have experienced being a minority in this country. A mouth-watering buffet dinner of various middle eastern cuisine was served as guests sat down and shared a meal with people that they had only just met an hour or so ago. A wonderful example of how the simple act of sharing a meal together can build mutual respect and understanding between people of different cultures and faiths. The wonderful thing about Australia and indeed Fawkner is that regardless of culture and faith, sport (and good food!) can often serve to bring us together and remind us that our shared values as humans far outweighs any smaller differences that may exist. Nadeem and Wassim thank the Northern Saints FC and Haig Fawkner CC and their respective Presidents for making the clubrooms available for such a wonderful event, and sincerely thank all who attended.

has today dismissed the 6th appeal by opponents of the Bendigo Mosque.AIM is delighted by this land mark decision.
