surface profile?

• Making sure the correct roughness – or profile – has

been generated on a surface prior to coating isessential.

• If the profile is too low, the adhesion of the coating to

the surface will be affected

• Too high and there is the danger that the profilepeaks will remain uncoated – allowing rust spots to

occur.

Why measure

surface profile?

• As the profile increases, so does the surface area –

which in turn increases the amount of coating that

needs to be applied.

• Achieving the correct surface profile enables theoptimum amount of coating to be applied saving

both time and money.

How to measure

• There are essentially four different methodsavailable for testing surface profile:

– Surface Comparators

– Replica Tape Method – Surface Profile Gauges

– Surface Roughness Testers

• Surface Comparators: used to compare

freshly blasted profiles to pre-definedprofiles.

• The comparators are available as grit, shotor sand and comparisons can be madevisually or by touch. This method is idealfor providing a very quick guide to the

profile.

• Replica Tape Method : a foam backed

plastic test piece is pressed into the blasted

surface. The tape is measured to establish

the surface profile.

• This test produces a numerical value for

the profile and a proof of test, as the tape

can be included in manual reports.

• Surface Roughness Testers: consist of a needleattached to an arm which moves automatically

over the surface to record and measure the

profile.

• These gauges are ideal for inspection as part of

quality control during the manufacturing

process.

• Surface Profile Gauges: available in either

analogue or digital versions. Once ‘zeroed’,the profile measurement is taken and thegauge records the value from the top of thepeaks to the bottom of the valley.

• Digital gauges minimise interpretationerrors in the readings and are fast andaccurate. Memory versions allow readingsto be stored and later downloaded to PC.

• The Elcometer 224 S Digital Surface Profile

Gauge provides and accurate way to measuresurface profiles in microns and mils.

• The Elcometer 224 S is an ideal gauge for quality checking the surface profile. Althoughthe gauge has no memory it does displaystatistical values as readings are taken.

• The Elcometer 224 T works in the same way

as the model S, but has the advantage of alarge built in memory to accurately recordeach measurement.

• The memory is able to store up to 50,000readings in 999 batches. This enablesextremely quick readings to be automaticallystored – ideal for measuring large surface

areas.

• A statistical analysis is also displayed on

the gauge and stored within each batch.

• Data can also be downloaded to a PCusing the ElcoMaster ™ Software (supplied

free of charge with the gauge), detailedreports can be created in seconds. Datacan also be transferred to a spreadsheet.

• When connected to a miniprinter results can be printed

out and attached to the inspection report immediately,on site, before creating the official report usingElcoMaster ™.

• The Elcometer 224 T operates in one of three modes;immediate, batch or counted average.

• Immediate mode: The gauge takes readings and

calculates statistics but does not store any readings in thememory (this is known as rolling statistics).

• Batch mode: The gauge takes measurements and stores

the individual readings and the statistical analysis in thememory. The Elcometer 224 has a memory capacity for up to 50,000 readings in 999 batches.

• Counted average mode: The gauge will automatically

calculate the average value of a pre-determined number of readings. Each of these averages is recorded within thebatch and stored within the memory.
