Making a Model of the Human Brain
Theory: The brain is the control center of the body. The external features are the four lobes of the
cerebrum, the cerebellum, and the brain stem. A whole model will include only six parts: the
frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, cerebellum, and brain stem.
Materials:
1. A picture or diagram of the brain from your textbook or any other source
2. A sculpting knife
3. Markers
4. Six different colored playdough, one for each part of the brain
(Look up the recipe for making playdough from the Internet and make your own playdough.)
Method:
1. Divide into groups of 3-4.
2. Knead each color dough until smooth. Refer to the brain diagram and shape each color
dough into one of the parts of the brain.
3. Press all the six parts together to form the brain.
4. Use the sculpting knife to make a deep groove, the longitudinal fissure, from the front to
the back to divide the model into the right and left hemispheres.
5. Sculpt fine grooves to show the folding (sulci) of the brain.
6. When the model is dry on the outside, use markers to write the name and functions of
each part.
7. Bring the model to the class and have it evaluated by the teacher and classmates.
Assessment: What new contents did you learn while working on this project? Assess yourself and
have your teacher assess your performance and understanding of the topic

Infertility A couple has been married for five years without conceiving. After a thorough medical checkup, the wife was diagnosed as having both her oviducts blocked at the proximal ends. After further examinations the doctors concluded that the blockages could not be unblocked by medication or surgery.
Suppose your group is the medical team treating her, what treatment would you recommend to the couple in order to be able to have a baby? Explain to the couple step by step the processes involved in this treatment. Include diagrams where necessary. (You can obtain information from high school biology books or from the Internet.)
