2015 Priorities - Creating Impact with Cleaner Fuels

•  Perform strong fuels research and analysis on energy landscape, barriers and opportunities

•  Raise awareness to different audiences of the benefits of cleaner fuels

•  Disseminate resources, recommendations, tools and knowledge sharing to help address barriers

•  Build new partnerships and foster existing ones •  Prioritize fuels with impact in focus countries and

maximize fuel impact through innovative technologies •  Strong integration of fuels through Alliance activities •  Facilitate opportunities for South-South information and

technology exchange

•  Need for country-specific information on fuels •  Lack of information regarding cost to the consumer of various

fuel types •  Need for fuel life cycle analysis on fuel options including

tradeoffs with movement along the fuel ladder –  Environmental impacts and efficiencies, emissions, cost for

production/distribution, consumer preferences

•  Inform decisions about fuel choices for programs and investors and ensure partners can demonstrate the impacts of their projects

•  Important to evaluate the impacts of fuels-focused projects •  Knowledge sharing for improved methods for processing solid

biomass

►  CharbriqueXes  from  sustainable  biomass  represent  a  strong  lever  for  the  reduc6on  of  Climate  Change  as  an  alterna6ve  fuel  to  tradi6onal  charcoal

►  The  main  source  of  posi6ve  impact  is  the  use  of  renewable  biomass  instead  of  non-‐renewable  wood

►  Transport  of  charbriqueXes  or  charcoal  is  a  negligible  source  of  impacts  compared  to  non-‐renewability  of  biomass

►  Increasing  the  produc6on  of  charbriqueXes  with  a  non  op6mized  charring  technology  has  a  higher  posi6ve  impact  on  Climate  Change  than  op6mizing  the  charring  technology  without  scaling  up  the  produc6on

Spark  Grantees  focused  on  Scaling  up  Fuel  Produc8on

SME  Funds  is  scaling  up  their  ethanol  stove  and  ethanol  cooking  gel  (developed  from  sawdust)  business  to  meet  the  growing  demands  in  Nigeria.

Eco-‐Fuel  Africa  makes  clean  burning  fuel  briqueXes  (green  charcoal)  made  from  biomass  waste  (charcoal  powder,  crop  residues  and  cassava  flowers)  which  burn  as  well  as  charcoal  from  wood,  but  burn  longer  and  cleaner  and  cost  less  than  charcoal  from  wood  in  Uganda.

Sustainable  Green  Fuel  Enterprise  manufactures  high  quality  char-‐briqueXes  made  from  biomass  waste  (coconut  shells  and  char-‐residues)  to  replace  unsustainable  charcoal  in  Cambodia.

SimGas  delivers  small-‐scale  bio-‐gas  systems  in  East  Africa  that  use  livestock  waste  or  organic  household  waste  into  methane  gas  and  fer6lizer.

PIF  Grantees  focused  on  Fuel  Innova8ons

CleanStar  Ventures  is  researching  ways  in  which  their  ethanol  model,  which  has  been  successful  in  Mozambique,  might  scale  up  in  other  parts  of  the  world  through  technology  innova6on  and  last-‐mile  fuel  distribu6on

C-‐Quest  Capital  is  tes6ng  price  elas6city  and  consumer  preference  for  their  business  model  which  links  improved  cookstoves  with  sustainable  biomass  fuel  in  Malawi.

Emerging  Cooking  Solu8ons  is  pioneering  a  market  for  biomass  pellets  (made  from  agricultural  waste  and  forest  residues)  through  its  sale  of  gasifying  stoves  in  Zambia.

Fuels enterprises that are innovating and scaling up
