    1. A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the

potential difference, V, across a wire and the length,L, of the wire.Diagram 1.1 shows the circuit used in the experiment.

    DIAGRAM 1.1

A constantan wire of length, L = 20.0 cm is connected between P and Q. When theswitch is on, the rheostat is adjusted to obtain a current of 0.20 A. The potential

difference, Vacross the wire is measured by a voltmeter. Diagram 1.2 shows the

    reading of the voltmeter.

The procedure is repeated with constantan wire of lengths, L = 30.0 cm, 40.0 cm,

50.0 cm and 60.0 cm. The corresponding readings of the ammeter and voltmeter are

    shown in Diagrams 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7. For each step, a current of 0.20 A wasused.

    1. Diagram 1.1 shows an electromagnet at the end of the arm of a crane lifting up

some scrap iron.Diagram 1.2 shows some pieces of scrap iron dropping off when the current in the

    electromagnet is reduced.

    DIAGRAM 1.1 DIAGRAM 1.2

Based on the observations on Diagram 1.1 and Diagram 1.2 and using yourknowledge of the electromagnet:

    (a) State one suitable inference. [1 mark]

    (b) State one hypothesis that could be investigated. [1 mark]

    (c) With the use of apparatus such as a solenoid, direct current power supply, paper clips and other apparatus, describe an experiment to investigate the

    hypothesis stated in 1(b).

In your description, state clearly the following:

    (i) The aim of the experiment.(ii) The variables in the experiment.

(iii) The list of apparatus and materials.

(iv) The arrangement of the apparatus.(v) The procedure used in the

    experiment.

Describe how to control and measure the manipulated variables and how

to measure the responding variables.(vi) The way to tabulate the data.
