Introduction

The following is a review of eight companies currently operating on the Chinese market for vitamins and

dietary supplements. This includes a closer look at products (and their cost), which allegedly have the same

effects as BP-CX-1 Substance from Meabco A/S. The goal is reaching a greater understanding of the pros

and cons of potential partners on the Chinese market. Initial research also focused on GlaxoSmithKline and

Nu Skin, but convections for corruption1 and pyramid schemes

2 respectively, ruled them out.

The eight companies have been placed in the following chart to highlight their differences in size and histo-

ry. Each review will end with an assessment of the company in question and the potential for partnership.

Products of interest:

Main product is Nutrilite, which has 26 products covering all ages. In 2014 Nutrilite had a market share of

10.9 percent3.

Examples of Nutrilite products4:

DOUBLE X (flagship product): Contains vitamins, minerals, and plant concentrates. It has phytonutrients

with antioxidant protection, which target key groups of cell-damaging free radicals (stemming from a poor

diet, pollution, and many other sources).

NUTRILITE Bio C Plus: Contains vitamin C from Acerola cherries, which protects immune health as well

as protecting the body against the effects of free radicals. It also contains phytonutrients for dietary balance

and added nutrition.

NUTRILITE Concentrated Fruits and Vegetables Tablets: Fights free radicals caused by smoke,

pollution, and exercise. Contains the phytonutrients lycopene and lutein.

NUTRILITE Calcium: Contains calcium and magnesium to help regulate calcium levels. Usable for both

men and women (also in their teens) seeking calcium supplementation.

Cost: 184 yuan (for kids) for 197 grams & 228 yuan (for grown-ups) for 233 grams

NUTRILITE Glucosamine HCl: Helps support the building and maintenance of collagen between joints.

Contains additional herbal ingredients to help support joint mobility and help protect against the breakdown

of joint cartilage and tissues. Intended for active people who are aging, and who may already take

antioxidants and multivitamins. Also aimed at people with high levels of sporting activity.

Strategy

Amway launched its updated herbal consumer health product in China in October 2013. It uses two major

herbal ingredients, ginkgo and desert cistanche, to provide shorter-term and longer-term memory benefits

and support optimal blood flow to protect and nourish the brain. There are expected to be more products with

herbal ingredients due to the official opening of its global botanical research center in Wuxi, Jiangsu

province. Amway only sells via own sales organization (down-line). Very strong in person to person

marketing.

Sponsorship deals with AC Milan and the Chinese Olympic team.

Assessment

Amway is still the market leader5, but the company has been losing ground in recent years. There could be an

interest in the abilities and natural origin of Substance in order to regain market shares and branding in a

more natural direction to fit with the rest of the market (especially Infinitus).

Infinitus

All products from Infinitus contain traditional Chinese herbal ingredients. They come in the forms of pills,

capsules, tonics and bottled drinks. Infinitus had a market share of 10.2 percent in 20146.

Yuan Tai Plus: Boosting the immune system to help elevate the body's resistance against bacterial and viral

infections. Examples of contents: Poria, Flammulina velutipes, Ganoderma lucidum, shiitake mushrooms,

white fungus, mulberry, wolfberry fruit, cassia seed.

Schisandra Plus: Protects and enhance liver function. Slows down and reduces shortness of breath and chest

tightness, palpitation, insomnia and dreaminess. Has anti-oxidation, and skin whitening abilities. Contains

ginseng, schisandra, ophiopogon japonicas.

Royal Lingzhi Plus: Detoxifies the body, enhances its immunity and encourages the body to rapidly heal

itself.

Gluco8: Regulates blood sugar, can significantly improve glucose tolerance and prevent the occurrence of

high blood sugar and diabetes. It can help in early type-two diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance by

lowering blood glucose and improve a variety of conscious symptoms. It contains mulberry leaf,

chrysanthemum, and yam. Making it rich in mulberry leaves polysaccharides, mulberry leaf alkaloids and

Yin Essence: This product is aimed at women of all ages, and improves beauty and has antiaging functions.

It regulates the immune system and improves health. Improves and balances the body's metabolism.

Yang Essence: The related product for men. It enhances physical fitness, male vitality, strengthens the

Rosa laevigata, jujube etc.

Strategy:

In January 2014, the mobile and computer application on iOs, Windows and Android systems was

officially launched, with which consumers can buy products and query about account-related

information.

Infinitus has a close relationship with Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong

University of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Institute of Materia

Medica, Beijing Technology and Business University and other advanced research institutions.

Assessment

It’s difficult to see an interest from Infinitus in direct collaboration with Meabco, but the knowledge and

market insight could be of big use to Meabco.

Guangzhou By-Health

Products of interest:

Develops, produces and sells a comprehensive list of vitamins and dietary supplements, including single

vitamins, multivitamins, protein, minerals, natural plant and animal extracts, and other functional dietary

supplements, targeting consumers of all ages and covering various functions such as strengthening bones,

percent8.

Strategy:

By-health aims to expand its presence in vitamins and dietary supplements with high-quality products,

private and tailored customer service and nationwide distribution. They have global raw material supply

bases, and plans are in place to establish self-owned organic farms located worldwide.

In August 2014 Guangzhou By-health officially signed an agreement on exclusive raw material supply base

of beta-carotene in Australia with BASF, which is its second exclusive raw material supply base. At the same

time, the company agreed on the strategic cooperation plan with the Netherlands-based supplier DSM and

French supplier Rousselot.

By-Health uses former NBA star Yao Ming in its advertising.

Assessment

Bayer is a major international player in pharmaceuticals. But their share in the market of dietary supplements

is quite small. However, the firm obviously sees a great future in China, as it signed a deal worth 100 million

euros to expand its production in Beijing last year14

. Their focus at the moment is on cardiovascular and dia-

betes.

A common factor in the Chinese market for vitamins and dietary supplements is the fondness of natural in-

gredients. In this sense Substance will fit in nicely.

A review of the many products shows that the main focus is on boosting the immune system (due to stress

and pollution), anti-aging, strengthening of bones and healthy growth of children.

Regarding the eight companies quite a few are interesting. Amway is the biggest player on the market, but is

losing market shares. That could mean an interest in Substance to bounce back. However, they seem to lack
