Introduction

English textbook for secondary school Book Five is the fifth in a series of seven textbooks which are currently developed to respond to the new policy of the Ministry of Education and Sports on the reform of general education from 11 years to 12 years. Upon the new educational reform, the Ministry of Education has decided to add another year to secondary school program in academic year 2009-2010. To implement the new policy, the Foreign Language Resource Center at the Research Institute for Educational Sciences in cooperation with the Faculty of Letters at the National University of Laos have formed the team to develop the Curriculum and write the textbook with teacher’s guide through financial support of the Basic Education Sector Development Project (BESDP). Along with the textbook, the teacher’s guide has been provided in order to help teachers perform their teachings effectively. The teacher’s guide has included teaching techniques for each step of the lessons. There are also some instructions how to use teaching aids and some suggestions for teachers and students how to create teaching aids for their own classes. However, the textbook is produced under the time pressure; therefore, some minor errors could not be avoided. The Foreign Language Resource Centre highly appreciates all comments and suggestions from readers s and these are considered as a great contribution to the quality assurance of the textbook as well as to the development of the Lao National Education. The Research Institute for Educational Sciences avails itself of this opportunity to express its sincere thanks to all contributors.

John: Do both men and women do the same work?

Kham: No, not really. The men usually do most of the heavy work, but the women are expected to do lighter work.

John: And what about the elderly people?

Kham: They stay home and look after the children.

4. Read Answer the questions.

- What do you know about traditional families in Laos? - What kind of work do people in the family do?

Read the following text.

The Lao traditional family

The family is an important unit in Laos. There are obligations of mutual help and support towards relatives of both the father and the mother. Work is usually shared among family members according to their age and gender. The men do most of the heavy work on the farm, as well as hunting, building, and fixing tools. Women are expected to do almost all the domestic

tasks such as carrying water and firewood, husking rice, cooking, spinning and weaving, and making clothes. Elderly people do lighter work and child-minding.

Lao children are brought up to be self-reliant from an early age. They learn correct behaviour by watching their elder brothers and sisters. They

also learn important skills from their elders by imitating. Older children have more responsibility than their younger brothers and sisters. All children are expected to obey their elders.

A family in Vientiane

Somphanh and Chanthalay have been married for twelve years. They have two children, one is ten and the other is eight years old. They live in an apartment in Vientiane. The apartment is near Chanthalay’s mother’s house. It is quite large and certainly big enough for the family.

Chanthalay has an important job with the government. She is very busy and often has to travel on business, so she is away from home very often.

Somphanh works as an engineer, so he is less busy than his wife. He can spend more time at home with the children. This means that Somphanh and his children have a lot of responsibilities around the house. They do most of the chores. Chanthalay’s mother sometimes comes over to help with the washing and ironing.

Somphanh does most of the shopping. He goes to the market and cooks for the family almost every day.

My name is Chamnong. I’m sixteen, and I live in Pakse with my

parents. We have a Lao-style traditional house.

Our house is made of wood. It has a thatched roof, and it’s built on

stilts about two metres high. There’s a large veranda at the front where we

eat, receive guests, and relax. A lot of activities take place under the house.

For example, my mother has a loom and she weaves fabrics there. My sister

and I like playing there because it’s cool and shady.

There are some fruit trees around the house. We have tamarind,

mango and coconut trees, and banana plants. Along the fence at the front,

there are some flowers. The toilet is outside the house, and there’s a well by

the fence. Next to the well, there’s a place where we can take a shower.

The house is not very big, but it is big enough for my family. Because

the house is surrounded by trees, it’s shady and cool. I like living there.

Chinese astrology

Chinese prophets in ancient time had divided the calendar of years into twelve years which are represented by animals. Those years included the year of rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.

People who were born in the year of the rat are busy, energetic, charming, generous, and they try hard to make people like them. They can become good leaders.

People who were born in the year of the ox are usually hard-working and practical. They sometimes forget to play. They are rather conservative, and they do not like change and do not easily accept new

ideas.

People who were born in the year of the tiger are brave, confident, and unpredictable. They love parties and taking risks. They like to be free, so they find it hard to be married.

People who were born in the year of the rabbit are usually clever, quiet, calm, and they like to do things correctly. They like to be comfortable. They hate to argue and do anything to avoid a disagreement.

People who were born in the year of the dragon are bold, brave people who are very noticeable in a crowd. They are very honest and truthful.

People who were born in the year of the goat are quiet and sincere, but they get depressed easily. They worry a lot. They enjoy concerts and music, and they love art. They are creative people, but they are not very

good at making money.

People who were born in the year of the monkey are very intelligent and active, although sometimes they look quiet and shy. They have very good memories, and they love to make people laugh. They often give up

things easily because of their weakness.

People who were born in the year of the rooster are complicated people. They are difficult to understand. They are critical of others, but they hate being criticized. They are analytical thinkers and they are not inquisitive.

Read the following text and answer the questions below.

International Festivals

Since tourism industry has spread across the world, people have visited

different places where they can see different festivals. In China, the

celebration of the New Year lasts about three days. On the first day, people

make offerings of at least five different kinds of food. They place the

offerings on a specially decorated table or an altar. At night, they light

fireworks to welcome home spirits of their ancestors. In the evening, the

family has dinner together and children receive red envelopes with money

inside. On the second day of the festival, the first day of the New Year,

family members stay at home. They wait at home and hope the first person to

come through the door at the start of the New Year will be a nice man. This

will bring them good luck for the whole year. On the last day of Chinese

New Year, people go out to visit their friends and relatives. Sometimes, they

have picnics or other gatherings.

In Scotland, Scottish people call their New Year Festival “Hogmanay”.

To prepare for the New Year, they clean the house and prepare traditional

food for the New Year party. They celebrate the New Year at home in the

evening of December 31st. They have a party that all friends and strangers

are welcome. They eat, drink, and dance together. Just before midnight,

everybody watches the clock and counts down the seconds: “ten, nine, eight,

seven, six, five, four, three, two, one…” At exactly midnight, everyone

shouts “Happy New Year”. Then they stand in a circle, join hands and sing

comes into the house after midnight is called the first-footer. Scottish people

Process of making a phone call To make a phone call to different provinces or countries, you need to know the areas, provinces and country access and code numbers of those areas. To make a call to other provinces within Laos, you need to dial the provincial access number first (0), then the area code, and then the local number. Making a call to Luang Prabang, for instance, you need to dial: 0 + 71 + 123456 (six digits for a landline phone). However, to make a call to or from a mobile phone, the area codes of all provinces is 20. This means that you have to dial: 0 + 20 + 12345678 (eight digits for a mobile phone). Greeting cards

A greeting card is a great way to celebrate any occasion, or just let someone know that we are thinking of them. There are two main kinds of greeting cards - everyday and seasonal cards.

The most popular everyday cards include birthday, anniversary, get well, friendship, sympathy, retirement, thinking of you, thank you, and many other occasions. The most popular seasonal cards are: Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and New Year.

Anniversary greeting cards are especially popular. We can find many types of these cards. They are specifically designed for particular anniversaries, for example: greeting cards to wives from husbands, or parents from children.

Thinking of you and friendship greeting cards are great for letting someone know we care about them. It is true when people get greeting cards they are happy to know that someone cares.

Mother’s Day is a great time for letting our mother, or anyone who has acted like our mother know how much we care about her by sending her a greeting card. Mother’s Day greeting cards are no longer just for mothers, but for all women and everyone. The best greeting card, anyone will give us, is one that comes from the heart.

These days people can have more shopping options. They can go shopping in their local markets, big markets in the town and in the shopping centres in Vientiane Capital. We asked four people to tell us where and why they love to go shopping.

Souvannaly from Savannakhet

I live in Nongviengkham village, but I usually go shopping at DongDok

market. In this market, I can find enough products necessary for me and my

family for daily consumption. I really love visiting this market because it

offers a variety of products from fashionable clothes to local products that

are much cheaper here. I go to this market almost every day to buy food-

especially vegetables, fish and poultry. I think the food at the market is

fresh and organic. I sometimes shop at Talat Sao Mall, Khouadinh and

Thongkhankham markets for better quality products like clothes, electric

appliances, household goods and electronic devices.

Yamane from Japan

I work for the JICA Project for Laos and live in Thatkao village. My

favourite places to shop are Talat Sao Mall and the shops on the road along

the Mekong River. In Talat Sao Mall, I can buy clothes and leather products

Japan. I really love shopping in Vientiane because I can bargain the price,

Shopping in Vientiane capital is a challenge for me because I have to spend

more money than when I shop in Phongsaly. I love to go shopping in the

local markets because I can save rather than go shopping in the big markets

Exhibition Centre). However, it’s great for me to go to Talat Sao Mall

because I can buy many reasonable quality products that I cannot find in my

Manivone’s spending behaviour

I have to spend a lot of money on food, groceries, household goods, clothes and stationery for my children every year. So I pay very careful attention to prices. I have to know what prices I expect to pay for these items. I usually spend about 45,000 kip for a kilo of beef, 35,000 kip for a kilo of chicken and 70,000 kip for 5 kilos of washing pounder. I also spend 150,000 kip for the electricity bill and 100,000 kip for water supply a month. I pay about 1,000,000 kip for my two children’s clothes and stationery, and 500,000 kip for household goods a year. By knowing the normal prices of different products, I don’t have to pay too much money on

them. Knowing different markets helps me find the best prices to pay for. For example, local shops and markets have very good prices for food, clothes, stationery for children and groceries, while the big shopping centres like Talat Sao Mall, Sangjieng and NongDouang markets have very good prices for household goods and electric appliances. I also ask the prices from my friends or neighbours before spending my money. In one month, I may visit three to four markets to look for reasonable items that I regularly use. I always walk around and stop at many stores to compare prices for the items I need. I am a very price conscious person, so I don’t waste money on buying things. I find that attention to prices is the best way for me to spend less on advertised products. Questions:

The 25th Southeast Asian games

(SEA Games) was held in Vientiane,

Laos in December 2009. This was the

first time Laos hosted the SEA Games.

Previously, Laos declined to host the

1965 Southeast Asian Peninsular

games because of financial difficulties.

The Lao government decided to host

the 25th SEA Games in the hope of

boosting the social-economic development of the country. The SEA

Games will help expose Lao culture and traditions to the world. A new

stadium was built on the 13th South Road at KM 16. It was a sports

complex that can organize many sports games at the same time.

The mascots for the 2009 SEA Games were two white elephants

dressed in traditional Lao attire. The male elephant was named Champa

and the female elephant was named Champi. The two white elephants

symbolized Laos as it was known as the kingdom of Lane Xang in ancient

times, which literally meant "the kingdom of a million elephants" when

translated into English.

The mascots were depicted as being cheerful, which was an

important part in making the sports competitions joyful and lively.

Lao people were very excited to welcome their guests from ASEAN

member countries. Athletes from ASEAN member countries were
