1. Digital Graphic Design This course gives students a practical and theoretical understanding of the use of the computer as a tool for professional designers for problem solving and creating artwork. Students will be exposed to current industry standard software and technology. The software taught during this course will be Adobe Indesign and Adobe Illustrator.

2. Design for Motion Graphics This course provides students with an understanding of a variety of video editing tools and processes, including and additional to those associated with digital video editing. It demonstrates how a variety of digital mediums such as digital video, still and time based graphics, audio and 3D content may be integrated for use in video advertisements, show reels and movie trailers. Students are also instructed in the processes and techniques required for the ever increasing delivery methods of digital media.

5. Typographic Design 1 This is an introductory course providing a basic knowledge of typography. While it is a strongly practical course it also places typography in its social and historical framework through the history of Roman lettering, the introduction of moveable type and the subsequent history of printing. Topics include lettering, legibil ity, spatial organisation and visual dynamics, negative space, type specification, basic grid design, tabulated matter, basic text and display setting.

6. Visual Communication Design 1This course introduces students to the fundamental precepts of communicating by design. Systematic approaches to information design are investigated and applied to a range of design problems requiring a graphic solution. A solution driven procedure is adopted in which problem-solving is a means by which learning takes place and design strategies are developed.

9. Visual Communication Design 2This course is a progressive extension of Visual Communication Design 1. It introduces students to the fundamental precepts of communicating by design. Systematic approaches to information design are investigated and applied to a range of design problems requiring a graphic solution. A solution driven procedure is adopted in which problem-solving is a means by which learning takes place and design strategies are developed.

10. Design Issues The course will outline the theoretical approaches associated with research in design issues. Students will be encouraged to find relevance in these theoretical propositions to their own studio areas. The course will specify the scope of students learning rather than the precise content. Students will be exposed to an array of issues through lectures, seminars and one-to-one discussion. Students will be given the opportunity to self-direct their particular research into design.

Students are required to complete the following 12 courses. Depending on the students’ previous studies, subject to the consideration and at the discretion of the university, a maximum of 4 courses could be exempted.

3. Modernism and Post-modernismThis course develops an understanding of modern and postmodernism visual culture through discussion of the work of a wide range of significant visual practitioners. The course considers the way that social-cultural contexts influence the production and consumption of visual art and design. The course makes links between historical and contemporary practice.

4. Reading the Visual The course, through the consideration and application of semiotic analysis, develops an understanding of visual culture as functioning within specific social-cultural contexts. Texts for analysis are generally drawn from modern and postmodernism visual culture but historical examples are not precluded from discussion and are used to trace the development of various visual rhetorics.

7. Principles of MarketingMarketing is everywhere, everyday and is the process that facilitates the exchange of products and services for the benefit of individuals, groups, organisations and society as a whole. Central to this course is the consumer’s perspective, and while you are a student you are also an active consumer in the marketing process, so you will appreciate the approach we take in presenting this course.

8. Typographic Design 2 This is an intermediate course that builds on previous studies and gives students a firm basis for refining their typographic knowledge and skills. The effective expression of meaning through the visible word demands an understanding of content and constant attention to detail. This course develops this critical awareness. Overall, by concentrating on the thoughtful combination of word and image, it attempts to produce outcomes of a high technical and aesthetic standard.

11. Visual Communication Design 3 This is an advanced interdisciplinary course that connects theory and practice. It emphasises the integration of critical theoretical knowledge, creative and imaginative applications of the design and communication processes to contemporary visual communication design problems. Special emphasis is put on social and environmental responsibility of design and its communicative dimensions in relation to the public sphere.

12. Visual Communication Design 4 This course emphasises the integration of creative and imaginative applications of the design and communication processes to contemporary graphic design problems. Special emphasis is put on preparing students for the real world working environments. Students are expected to apply a professional code of ethics to activities, to solve complex and demanding design problems within fixed deadlines, and to present work in a professional manner.

There are three semesters in each calendar year:

Semester 1 September – January Semester 2 January – MaySemester 3 May – September

Students are required to study 4 courses in each semester. The Program can normally be completed within 12 months of full-time study.
