Summary

Glucose-derived compounds » N-acyl-N’-b-D-glucopyranosylureas » glucopyranosylidene-spiro-heterocycles (isoxazolines, oxathiazolines) » C-b-D-glucopyranosyl heterocycles having large aromatic substituents inhibit glycogen phosphorylase in the nanomolar range.

Further inhibitor design may focus on the interactions in the b-channel of the enzyme.

Physiological investigations show glucopyranosylidene-spiro-thiohydantoin to act towards normalizing serum glucose and liver glycogen levels in diabetic rats.
