De herkomst van de BagelIn 1683 kwam de eerste bagel de

wereld binnenrollen toen een bakker

zijn huldebetuiging wilde doen aan Jan

Sobieski, Koning van Polen. Koning Jan

had net het Oostenrijkse volk gered van

een aanslag Turkse indringers.

De koning was een goede ruiter en de

bakker besloot om het deeg in een

beugelvorm te maken. Hiervan stamt

het woord bagel af. Sommige redeneren

dat de cirkelvorm het makkelijker maakt

om door de straatkopers door de stad

te dragen en te verkopen aan hun

klanten. In plaats van een karretje door

de stad te trekken, droegen ze lange

palen met bagels erop geregen. Wat de

herkomst ook is, de bagels bleven het

bestbewaarde geheim van Polen voor

meer dan 150 jaar!

Aan het einde van de 19e eeuw, met de

stroom Poolse immigranten, kwam de

bagel Amerika binnen. In het begin waren

ze slechts bekend onder de Poolse Joden

die in New York woonden. In ongeveer

1910 werd de Bagel Bakkers Unie

opgericht, die er toe geleid heeft dat het

bagelambacht zich heeft verspreid.

In de jaren ‘50 draaide de comedie Bagels

en Yox op Broadway. In de pauze werden

bagels uitgedeeld onder het publiek.

Daarna begonnen de tijdschriften Time

en Family Circle speciale aandacht te

besteden aan bagelrecepten. Sindsdien

zijn ze volop in trek gebleven.

The origin ofthe BagelThe first bagel rolled into the world in 1683 when a baker wanted to pay tribute to Jan Sobieski, the King of Poland. King Jan had just saved the people of Austria from an onslaught by Turkish invaders.

The King was a great horseman, and the baker decided to shape the yeast dough into an uneven circle resembling a stirrup. The Austrian word for stirrup is beugel. Some argue that the shape also came about to help street vendors carry the Bagels to their customers. Instead of pulling a stall around town, they would carry long poles with the Bagels threaded down them.

Whatever the origin, they remained Poland’s best kept secret for the next 150 years!In the late 1800’s, with an influx of Polish immigrants, the Bagel found it’s way over to America. Initially, they were only popular amongst Polish Jews who settled in New York. Around 1910, the Bagel Bakers Union was formed. This led to apprenticeships with Bagel Bakers, and thus the art spread.In the 1950’s, the comedy Bagels and Yox, played on Broadway with Bagels given to the audience in the intermission. As a result, the magazines Time and Family Circle began to feature recipes for Bagels and they have remained popular ever since.

Het Stadhuis(The Town Hall)

In 1448 werd er begonnen met de bouw van het huidige stadhuis, onder leiding van de Mechelse architect Keldermans. Aan de rechter zijgevel is een klokkenspel met mechanische poppen zichtbaar, aangebracht in 1961. De hoofdrolspeler is Floris V, die Gouda in 1272 stadsrechten verleende. Tegen de achtergevel werd in 1697 een zandstenen schavot gebouwd. Tot 1860 werden hierop misdadigers in het openbaar terecht gesteld: opgehangen, gebrandmerkt of de oren afgesneden.

Na 1860 werd het schavot als bordes gebruikt. Onder het bordes bevindt zich de ingang naar de vroegere vleeshal, later boterhal en tegenwoordig de Burgerhal waar een restaurant gevestigd is.

The building of the present town-hall began in 1448, under an architect named Keldermans from Mechel in Belgium. On the right hand side, a carillon with mechanical puppets can be seen, which was installed in 1961. The leading role is played by Floris V, who granted municipal rights to Gouda in 1272. In 1697 a sandstone scaffold was built against the rear. Up until 1860, criminals were publicly executed here: hanged, branded, or the ears cut off. After 1860 the scaffold was used as a platform or podium. Under the podium is situated the entrance to the original meat-hall, later the butter-hall and today the Citizens’ Hall where a restaurant is located now.

De Sint-Janskerk(Church of St. John the Divine)

De oorsprong van de Sint-Janskerk ligt waarschijnlijk in de 13e eeuw. In die periode hoorde hij bij het hofcomplex van de Heren van der Goude. Rond 1350 verrees een toren waarvan de onderbouw nog resteert. Rond 1400 werd de kerk naar het oosten uitgebreid en ontstond een driebeukige hallenkerk met een driezijdig koor. In diezelfde periode kwamen de twee volgende torengeledingen tot stand. In 1438 viel ook de kerk ten prooi aan de stadsbrand, maar na een korte herstelperiode werd het gebouw al weer gewijd. Na 1475 werd de kerk uitgebreid met twee extra zijbeuken, een niet uitstekend transept en het koor. Daarmee ontstond de langste kerk van Nederland (123 m). In 1552 brandde een groot deel van de kerk af en werd de kerk grootscheeps verbouwd naar ontwerp van Cornelis Frederickszoon van der Goude. Aan het einde van de 16e eeuw werd het middenschip verhoogd met een lichtbeuk en de toren kreeg de bovenste hardstenen bekroning met spits. De Sint-Janskerk is wereldberoemd om zijn glas-in-loodramen uit de periode 1555-1603 waarvan een deel is ontworpen door de gebroeders Crabeth.

The origins of the Sint-Janskerk probably lie in the 13th century. During that time, it belonged to the court-complex of the Lords of the Goude. A tower arose in approximately 1350, of which the substructure still exists. In 1400 the church was extended eastwards, resulting in a three-aisled hall-church with a triple-sided choir. At the same time, the next two tower sections were completed. In 1438 the church fell prey to the city-fire. However, after a short period of restoration it was re-consecrated. After 1475 the church was extended with two extra aisles, an unprotruding transept and the choir. This resulted in it becoming the longest church of the Netherlands (123 m). In 1552 a large part of the church burnt down again and was re-built on a grand scale following the design of Cornelis Frederickszoon van der Goude. At the end of the 16th century the nave was heightened with a windowed-aisle and the tower was crowned with its spire. The Sint-Janskerk is world famous for its stained glass windows dated from the period 1555-1603. Some of these were designed by the Crabeth brothers.

De Waag(The Weighing-House)

De Goudse kaasmarkt bestaat al ruim 300

jaar. De Goudse Waag is in 1668 gebouwd,

speciaal voor de Goudse kaashandel.

Boven de ingang van de Waag is een

reliëf te zien waarop het wegen van de

kaas staat afgebeeld. Speciaal voor de

toeristen - die vanuit de hele wereld komen

om dit puur Hollandse tafereel te mogen

meemaken - wordt er in de zomermaanden

een traditionele kaasmarkt gehouden.

The Gouda cheese-market has existed for well

over 300 years. The Gouda Weighing-House was

built in 1668, specially for the Gouda cheese

trade. Above the entrance to the Weighing-House,

a relief can be seen which depicts the weighing

of the cheese.

A traditional cheese-market is held in Gouda

throughout the summer months. This is specially

done for tourists, who come from all over the

world, enabling them to experience this typically,
