Ourfraternityandsororityorganizationsareveryinvolvedinservingboththecampusandthecommunity.Clemsonfraternityandsororitymembers

volunteerwithlocalfosterchildren,animalsheltersandvoterregistrationdrives—justtonameafew.Inadditiontotheextensivecommunityservice

thatClemsonfraternityandsororitymembersparticipatein(averagingmorethan20hoursamemberformanychapters),eachchapteralsosponsors

variousphilanthropiceventstoraisemoneyforsomeamazingcauses.Someoftheseeventsincludeaflagfootballtournament,askeetshootandChili

CookOff.

Becauseofourrichhistoryoncampusandintegralinvolvement,FraternityandSororityLifeisrepresentedinnumerousstudentorganizationsand

formany,isanintegralpartoftheClemsonExperience.Membersofourcommunityareactiveinthetourguideassociation,FCA,StudentAlumni

Council,studentgovernmentandvarioushonorsocieties,clubsandorganizations.Currently,boththestudentbodypresidentandvicepresidentare

activemembersofClemson’sFraternityandSororityLifecommunity.

ThebestthingaboutFraternityandSororityLifeatClemsonisthatitispossibletoleadarichsociallifewithactivecampusinvolvementandstill

excelacademically.Asstudentsataprestigiousuniversity,Clemsonfraternityandsororitystudentscontinuetosettheacademicbar,consistently

earningahigheraverageGPAthanunaffiliatedstudents.BybecomingamemberofFraternityandSororityLife,studentsreceiveextensiveacademic

NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL

TheNationalPan-HellenicCouncilInc.(NPHC)isanumbrella

organizationforninehistoricallyblack,internationalGreekletter

fraternitiesandsororities.EachofthenineNPHCorganizations

evolvedduringaperiodwhenAfrican-Americanswerebeingdenied

essentialrightsandprivilegesaffordedtoothercollegestudents.

NPHCwasformedasapermanentorganizationonMay10,1930,

onthecampusofHowardUniversityinWashington,D.C.,and

itwasincorporatedunderthelawsofthestateofIllinoisin1937.

OmegaPsiPhi,KappaAlphaPsi,AlphaKappaAlpha,DeltaSigma

ThetaandZetaPhiBetawerethefivefoundingmembersofthe

NationalPan-HellenicCouncilin1930.Thecouncil’smembership

expandedasAlphaPhiAlpha(1931),PhiBetaSigma(1931),Sigma

GammaRho(1937)andIotaPhiTheta(1997)joinedtheNPHC.The

councilpromotesinteractionthroughforums,meetingsandother

mediumsfortheexchangeofinformationandengagesincooperative

programmingandinitiativesthroughvariousactivitiesandfunctions.

Theirofficialcolorsareblackandwhite.

The Organization’s Stated Purpose and Mission in 1930NPHCaimstoserveinunanimityofthoughtandactionasfaras

possibleintheconductofGreeklettercollegiatefraternitiesand

sororities,andtoconsiderproblemsofmutualinteresttoitsmember

organizations.

Today,theprimarypurposeandfocusofmemberorganizationsremains

topromotecommunityawarenessandactionthrougheducational,

economicandculturalserviceactivities.Theindividualmemberisalso

expectedtoalignwithagraduate/alumnichapterfollowinggraduation

fromcollegetoperpetuatethepurposeofthecouncil.

UniversityinWashington,D.C.Inordertoperpetuateourorganization,fourbravewomencame

togethertoincorporatethesororityonJan.29,1913.AlphaKappaAlphaSororityInc.isthefirst

black,Greekletterorganizationforcollege-educatedwomen.AlphaKappaAlphaisproudofher

403undergraduateand556graduatechaptersacrosstheworld.Whileupholdingourmissionof

beingof“servicetoALLmankind,”womenofAlphaKappaAlphaSororityInc.alsocontinueto

upholdalegacyofsisterhoodandscholarship.TheLambdaThetachapterofAlphaKappaAlpha

wascharteredonClemson’scampusonMay2,1977,by15courageouswomenunderthedirection

ofthenSouthAtlanticRegionalDirector,Mrs.NormaWhite.LambdaThetawasthefirstchapter

ofanysororityforblackwomenatClemsonUniversityandthesecondNPHCorganizationoverall.

SignatureeventsfortheLambdaThetachapteroccurduringourannualFoundersWeek,which

isheldthelastweekofJanuary.MostofourprogramsandeventsareguidedbyourSignature

ProgramInitiatives.Westrivetoaccomplishthegoalofgloballeadershipthroughtimelessservice.

KappaAlphaPsiFraternityInc.wasfoundedonJan.5,1911,onthecampusofIndianaUniversity

ofBloomington,Ind.TheKappaLambdachapterofKappaAlphaPsiwascharteredonOct.

16,1980.TheirgrouplinenamewastheKlemsonKrimsonSeven.Thesegreatmenbeganthe

traditionofACHIEVEMENTthathasremainedunparalledthroughtheyearsonClemson’s

campus.Today,westrivetoenhancetheundergraduateexperienceandservethecommunityin

ourinitiatives.Ourchapterparticipatesinnumerouscommunityserviceeventsthroughoutthe

semester,includingvolunteerworkinLittlejohnCommunityCenter,PendletonHighSchooland

sorority’sfoundingprinciplesandcommitmenttoserviceinourcommunity.FounderViolaTyler

wasoftenquotedsaying,“[Intheidealcollegiatesituation]thereisaZetainagirlregardlessof

race,creedorcolor,whohashighstandardsandprinciples,agoodscholarlyaverageandan

activeinterestinallthingsthatsheundertakestoaccomplish.”



COLLEGE PANHELLENIC COUNCIL (CPC)

TheCollegePanhellenicCouncil(CPC)isthelargestwomen’s

organizationsonClemson’scampus.CPC’smainobjectiveistounite

allsororitywomenoncampusandtohelpmaintainanoutstanding

fraternityandsororitycommunity.Madeupofrepresentativesfrom

12chaptersandanelectedboardofsevenexecutiveofficers,CPCis

alsochargedwithcontinuallypromotingtheimageofsororitieson

campus.Thesewomenhelpleadthesororitycommunityandensure

itsimportanceatClemsonUniversity.CPCcoordinatesavarietyof

eventsandactivitiesthatincludeeverysorority,suchasleadership

luncheons,educationalspeakersandacampuswideHungerClean-up.

ThePanhelleniccommunityisoneofthestrongestintheSoutheast.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS WHAT IS SILENCE?

Recruitmentcanbeastressfulandemotionaltime.Inordertoprevent

unduepressureonpotentialnewmembers,“silence”isobserved.

Sororitywomenandpotentialnewmembersshouldcommunicate

aboutrecruitmentonlyduringeventsandarelimitedtocasual

greetingsinpublic.Itisrecommendedthatpotentialnewmembersdo

nottalktoeachotherabouttheiropinionsorchoicesinrecruitment.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT RECRUITMENT

Is recruitment only for first-year students?

No,notatall.Sophomores,juniorsandseniors,bothcontinuing

andtransferring,arewelcometoparticipate.Sororitylifehasmany

wonderfulopportunitiestoofferallcollegewomen.However,youmust

havea2.7cumulativegradepointaveragetoparticipateinPanhellenic

recruitment.

What is a legacy? Do I have to be one to join a sorority?

Alegacyisacloserelative(usuallyamother,grandmotherorsister)

ofamemberofaparticularchapter.Chaptersarenotrequiredtooffer

aninvitationtoalegacyanymorethanalegacyisobligatedtojoin

herrelative’ssorority.Itisimportantforapotentialmembertofind

achapterwithwhomshefeelscomfortable.Ifyouarenotalegacy,

thiswillnothinderyourparticipationinrecruitment.

What if I only want to be in a certain sorority?

Whilemanypotentialnewmembersentertheirrecruitmentexperience

withoneorafewchaptersinmind,itisimportanttokeepanopen

Do I have to follow the recruitment schedule and attend all events?

TheSigmaPsichapterofTauKappaEpsiloninClemsonUniversitycelebratesthehonorofbeing

the336thchaptertobefoundedinthefraternityrenownedforhavingthemostactivechapterson

aninternationallevel.FoundedonNov.12,1992,thechapterisarelativelyyoungsocialfraternity

thatpridesitselfonstrongsocialinteractionwiththecampusandagoodstandingwiththe

community.Membersactivelyparticipateincommunityservicewithothercampusorganizations,

raisingmoneyforSaintJudeChildren’sResearchHospital,theMemoryWalkfortheAlzheimer

Associationandlocaltutoring.WithmultiplebrothersspreadthroughouttheROTCprogram,

multipleengineeringsocietiesandmanyotherservicefraternitiesandsocieties,TKEistrulya

presenceonClemson’scampus.MembersofTauKappaEpsilonfullybelieveintheirmotto,

“Notforwealth,rankorhonor,butforpersonalworthandcharacter.”

Foundedin1907by16civilengineersattendingtheUniversityofIllinois,Trianglehasgrownto

beanationalbrotherhoodofmorethan26,000in37chapters,coloniesandinterestgroupsin

22states.OurpurposehereatClemsonistobuildachapterofbalancedmenwhocultivatehigh

moralcharacter,fosterlifelongfriendshipsandlivetheirliveswithintegrity.Triangleisuniquein

thatitdoesnothaveaGreekname,butisrecognizedastheonlynationalfraternityforstudentsin

engineering,architectureandsciencemajors.AsamemberoftheNorth-AmericanInterfraternity

Conference,Trianglehasalottoofferacademically,sociallyandathleticallytoallitsmembersas

wellasbeingknownforitscontributionstoHabitatforHumanity.

GREEK PROGRAMMING BOARD ORDER OF OMEGA

TheGreekProgrammingBoardpromotesandadvancesFraternity

andSororityLifeasawholeatClemsonUniversity,bothoncampus

andinthecommunity.Theboardplansanumberofactivitiesfor

theentirecommunity,butitstwomaineventsareGreekWeekin

thespringandtheMemorial5Kinthefall.

GreekWeekisaweeklongseriesofactivitiesthatunitestheentire

communityinfriendlycompetition.Twelveteamsarecreatedthat

includeamixoforganizationsfromtheNationalPanhellenicCouncil,

theInterfraternityCouncilandtheCollegiatePanhellenicCouncil.

Eventsthroughouttheweekconsistofakickballtournament,trivia,

akaraokecompetition,daysofserviceandadancecompetition!

Additionally,throughouttheweektherearethreephilanthropic

competitionsthatraisemoneyforeachofthecouncilphilanthropies

oncampus.

TheClemsonStudentMemorial5kbeganinhonorofthreefraternity

andsororitystudentswhoseuntimelydeathsinthefallof2007

affectedtheentireGreekcommunity.Intheirhonorthestudents

havetakenontheprojectofbuildinganall-faithschapelandstudent

memorialgardenonClemsonUniversity’scampus.Thechapelwill

serveasasmallgatheringplacewherestudentscangoindifficult

timestoreflect,meditateandpray.Inconjunctionwiththisgathering

space,theStudentMemorialGardenwillprovideanothersourceof

reflection,butwiththeparticularpurposeofrememberingstudents

whoseliveshavebeenlostduringtheirtimeatClemson.Thefirst

ClemsonStudentMemorial5ktookplaceonNov.8,2009,marking

thefirsttimeallthreecouncilsofFraternityandSororityLifecame

togetherforacommoncause.Over300peopleparticipatedinthe5k,

andtheeventraisedmorethan$5,000todonatetotheproject.The

ClemsonStudentMemorial5khassuccessfullycontributedtothe

Memorialchaptereveryyearsince.

Rememberthatourmainserviceistoserveyou,themembersof

theClemsonCommunity.Ifthereisanythingwecandotoimprove,

pleasecontactususingthemostrecentboardinformationonthe

FraternityandSororityLifewebsite.

OrderofOmegaisthepremierleadershiphonorsocietyfor

membersofthefraternityandsororitycommunity.OrderofOmega

recognizesjuniorsandseniorswhohaveexemplifiedhighstandards

intheareasofscholarship,leadershipandinvolvementwithintheir

respectivefraternal,campusandlocalorganizations.OrderofOmega

comprisesthetop3percentofthefraternityandsororitycommunity,

withmembersfromthePanhellenic,NationalPanhellenicand

InterfraternityCouncils.Thereare311chaptersofOrderofOmega

acrossthecountry,andClemsonisproudtorepresenttheEpsilon

Kappachapter,establishedin1983.

InordertobeofferedmembershipintoOrderofOmega,applicants

mustbeatleastjuniorstandinginacademiccredithours,possessa

cumulativeGPRabovetheall-Greekaverage,beenrolledatClemson

Universityforatleasttwosemestersandmustnotgraduateduringthe

samesemesterastheapplicationformembership.

OrderofOmegaatClemsonUniversityisresponsibleforplanningall-

Greekeventsthroughouttheyear,suchastheFraternityandSorority

LifeAwardsBanquetinthespringtohonortheaccomplishmentsof

theGreekcommunityfromthepastyear.OrderofOmegaalsoco-

hoststheClemsonCup,anannualcampuswidespeechcompetition.

Outsideofthoseevents,OrderofOmegaworkswiththeindividual

fraternityandsororitychaptersoncampustopromoteunitythrough

thepursuitofacademicexcellence.

Thomas Green Clemson, Our Founder

ClemsonAgriculturalCollegewasfoundedin1889whenthegovernor

ofSouthCarolinasignedabillacceptingThomasGreenClemson’s

giftofpropertyandassetstoestablisha“highseminaryoflearning.”

TheCollegeformallyopenedasanall-malemilitaryschoolin1893

with446studentsand15facultymembers.

Clemson Rings

ThefirstClemsonclassringswereissuedin1896.The“C”

surroundingapalmettotreeonablackbackgroundisoneofthe

mostrecognizableofallcollegeringstoday.Copyrightedsothatonly

Clemsonalumniandstudentswithmorethan90hoursmayhavethe

honorofwearingit,theringcontainsthemotto:“whoshallseparate

usnow?”

Tiger Paw

Createdin1970,theTigerPawistheathleticsymbolbywhich

ClemsonUniversityismostoftenrecognized.Manyschoolsusea

similarpaw,butClemson’scopyrightedlogoisuniquebecauseit

wastakenfromtheprintofarealtiger;ithasafishhook-shaped

wrinkleinthelowerright-handareaofthepawandistiltedto

theoneo’clockposition.

First Friday Parade

Since1974,theFirstFridayParadehasbeenheldtheFridayafternoon

beforethefirsthomefootballgametocelebratethenewfootball

season.Eachsororitydesignsafloatfortheparade,whichbeginsat

SikesHallandcontinuesthroughcampusanddowntownClemson.

Homecoming and Tigerama

Theexcitement,spiritandenthusiasmofHomecomingcelebrations

havebeenaClemsontraditionsince1914.Duringtheweekpreceding

thegame,studentorganizationscrowdontoBowmanFieldto

constructHomecomingdisplaysthatwillbejudgedongameday.On

everyHomecomingFridaynightsince1957,Tigerama—oneofthe

nation’slargeststudent-runpeprallies—hasfeaturedthecrowning

ofMissHomecoming,skitsbystudentorganizationsandaspectacular

fireworkshow.
