1 Haileybury College Concert tour of Slovenia 25-29 June 2013 Concert 1 Ursuline Church Slovenska cesta 21 Ljubljana Date: Wednesday 26 June Description: Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and lies between Vienna and Venice, at a crossroads of important transport routes from northern Europe to the Adriatic sea and from western to eastern Europe and further onto the Balkans. Ljublj ana was the centre of the Slovenian Reformation movement. In 1701 the Academia philharmonicorum institution was founded and the members of its successor, the Philharmonic Society, included the violinist Niccolo Paganini and composers Josef Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven. The Ursuline church is a beautiful Italian baroque church belonging to Ursuline Convent which was built between 1718 and 1726. It is known for its façade of six great columns and gable, and contains a huge altar built of African marble, designed by Italian Baroque artist Francesco Robba. The original bell tower was destroyed in an earthquake in 1895, and rebuilt in the 1900s. Ursuline Church

CONCERT 2 

St George’s Cathedral

Date: Thursday 27 June

Description: The picturesque medieval town of Piran was built on the tip of a small peninsula reaching

far into the sea at the northwestern most point of the Istrian peninsula. Piran is one of the oldest towns

in Slovenia. The major source of the town’s prosperity at that time was the production and sale of salt

produced from the nearby saltpans. The church complex atop the hill above Piran consists of the parish

church of St George, the bell tower, the baptistery of St John the Baptist and the priest’s house. Since thesixteenth century both sides of the hill has been reinforced with arches that beautifully underline the

dominance of the church complex. The present day complex of the parish church of St.George was built

at the end of the sixteenth century and due to its uniqueness and quality the Baroque church complex

has been declared a monument of national importance.

Audience capacity:  approx 300

Time: 9:00pm 

Duration: 1 hour without interval 

Rehearsal: 4:30pm – 5:30pm 

Programme: Choir only concert, sacred, classical repertoire required

Changing facilities/WCs: There is only room available for the whole group. There are toilets.

Coach parking: The coach is unable to access the church. The group will have to walk 500m.

CONCERT 3St Peter’s Church 

Linhartov trg

Radovljica

Slovenia

Date: Friday 28 June

Description: Radovljica is located on the southern slope of the Karavanke mountain range close to the

place which marks the start of Slovenia’s longest river, the Sava. Radovljica was settled by the early Slavs

and by the fourteenth century had grown into an important market town as a result of trade on the river

and the nearby iron forgeries. St Peter’s serves as a typical example of a Late Gothic church, which were

built in the fifteenth century following examples from the south of Germany. Typically, the central nave is

not separated from the aisles with passages and all are the same height. Three pairs of octagonal

columns support a ribbed vaulting made up of eight-pointed stars. The high altar dates back to the

eighteenth century and is hewn from black marble, in keeping with Venetian examples.

Time: 8:00pm 

Duration: 90 minutes in total; first half (choral only) inside the church (45’) short break then second half

(jazz band) in the courtyard (45’) TBC 

Programme: no restriction on repertoire for performances in the church

Changing facilities/WCs: Two separate rooms available for changing. Toilets available.

Coach parking: St Peter’s is in a pedestrianized zone so drop off will be outside the pedestrianized zone

then a short walk to the church. Instruments will be transported to the church in a separate van.
