EARLY ROCK

• Disc jokey Alan Freed coined the phrase “Rock & Roll” in 1951.

• Elvis Presley released his first single “That’s all right(mama)” in 1954

• The Beatles broke in US and UK top charts with “I want to hold your hand” in 1964.

• Cliff Richard made the first British Rock & Roll hit- “Move It”

1960’s TO MID 1970’s

• Pop Rock: Blend of Pop music with Rock.• Folk Rock: Blend of Folk music with Rock.

• Progressive Rock: - Different instruments and musical forms.- Longer than standard 3 minute track length.- Conceptual, abstract and fantasy based lyrics.

• “1963-1974” period known as counter culture movement as Rock built anti war movement against threat of atomic bomb.

• Psychedelic Rock: - Focused drug sub culture and hallucinogenic experiences.- Introduced long instrumentals.

MID TO LATE 1970’s

• Hard Rock: - Aggressive loud vocal.- Distorted guitar riffs.- 4/4 Drum beats.

• Prominent Bands of this era: - Black Sabbath, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, Aero Smith and many others.

• Heavy Metal: - Thick massive sound.- Highly amplified distortion .- Extended guitar solos.- Emphatic beat and overall loudness.

GOLDEN 1980’s

• Prominent Bands: - Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Motor Head, Diamond Head, Megadeth, Metallica, Sepultura, Slayer and many others.

• Heavy Metal Outlook:- Long Hair- Denim Jacket- Leather- Chains and

spikes

• Alternative Rock:- Name was coined in late 80’s.- Did not fit in the general pattern.

• New Wave of British Heavy Metal• More extreme forms of rock, such as Thrash Metal became popular.

1990’S and 2000’S

• Some admired Sub-Genres:- Metal Core- Melodic Death Metal- Symphonic Extreme

Metal- Black Metal

• Nu Metal and Rap Rock:- Combined rap with Heavy Metal.

• Grunge: - Contrasted mainstream Rock.- Dirty sound.- Lyrics: Angst fill and apathetic.

• Electronic Rock:- Rock music produced with computer software.- Often called Laptronica.

• Few Pop Bands formed in late 70’s.

• Western Music came to Bangladesh right after Liberation War.• Pioneers of Western Music:

- Azam Khan, Pilu Mamtaz, Fakir Alamgir, Firoz Shai, Ferdous Wahid.

• Prominent Rock Bands:- Warfaze, Artcell, Cryptic Fate, Black, Nemesis, Power Surge.

• First Three Rock Bands of Bangladesh (late 80’s):- Warfaze, In Dhaka, Rock Strata.

• Talent Hunt Programs that promoted Rock:- Benson & Hedges: Star Search.- D- Juice: D- Rock Star.

• Under ground concerts are held regularly.

SOCIAL IMPACTS

• Rock has Influenced:- Life Style- Fashion- Attitude- Language

• Rock protested against war.• Early rock helped in Civil right movements for Afro-Americans.

• Large Rock Concerts arranged worldwide to raise fund for social welfare.

• George Harrison’s “Concert for Bangladesh” in 1971 spread the news of genocide in Bangladesh worldwide.

LIVE WITH ROCK

Technical Definition of Rock is never important.It is the Feel, the Attitude that makes Rock lot more than just a music form.
