Alana is a New Zealander on exchange in Japan. In this course you will follow her adventures and learn the Japanese needed for NCEA Level 2. You will use the plain forms of verbs and adjectives throughout the course. You might already know what plain verbs are. You will also learn how they are used in some new grammar structures. These structures will be explained in the lesson as they are introduced. If you need to refer back to an explanation later, look in the Communications Functions booklet (JP2000B).
In NCEA Level 1 you learnt how to understand directions using verbs of motion like ‘go’, ‘turn’ and ‘cross’. Read the following explanation to refresh your memory of how these verbs are used.
1日目 alana starts at a japanese high school
3JP2001© te aho o te kura pounamu
plain verb of motion + とと means ‘when’ or ‘if’ when it follows a verb of motion like いく(to go), まがる(to turn), わたる (to cross), in sentences like: オークランドに行くと、 スカイ タワーがみえます。If / When you go to Auckland, you’ll see the Sky Tower.
つぎのかどを 右に まがると、 本やが みえます。If you turn right at the next corner, you’ll see the bookshop.
はしをわたると、 びょういんがあります。When you cross the bridge, there’s a hospital.
In all these sentences, what happens after と is a result of the action in the verb of motion. The verb before と is in the plain present form.
plain verb + つもり (to intend to do something )This has the meaning of ‘intend to do . . . ’. You always use the plain present form of the verb before つもり. For example:
なにを するつもりですか。 What do you intend to do? べんきょうするつもりです。 I intend to study.
日本に 行くつもりです。 I intend to go to Japan.
アルバイトを するつもりです。 I intend to do part-time work.
スーパーに いくつもりです。 I intend to go to the supermarket.

お母さん: 八時から。
アラナ: そうですか。 朝、 はやく おきるつもりです。
Note the use of の to end some statements and questions in this conversation. This is a common way to end a statement and make it softer. It is also used by a speaker with rising intonation to ask a question.

learning outcomesExpress that you like doing something using a plain verb + こと/のRead and write the kanji 私 毎 来
learning intentionsIn this lesson you will learn to:
• express you like doing something using a plain verb + こと/の
• read and write the kanji 私 毎 来
In the previous lesson Alana said,
朝、 はやくおきるつもりです。I intend to wake up early in the morning.
Make sure you understand this structure using つもり.
You will also see the following structure in the conversation below
plain verb + の/ことTo say you like something in Japanese you say: ………. がすきです。
For example: おんがくが すきです。 I like music.
To say you like doing something, use the plain form of the verb plus either ことor の. (This is known as a ‘nominaliser’). For example:
I like listening to music.
おんがくを きくことがすきです。or おんがくをきくのがすきです。
You cannot just add がすきです to the plain verb as in this example:
おんがくを きくがすきです. You instead must use ことor の after the plain present form of the verb. Some more examples:
セーラは しょうせつを よむことがすきです。Sarah likes reading novels.
マーカスは、 しゃしんを とるのがすきです。Marcus likes taking photographs.

When Alana began school she had to choose some optional subjects(せんたくかもく) and a club activity (クラブかつどう).Here she tells her friend Miyuki what she intends to do.In this conversation, notice how at the end of a question, Miyuki sometimes uses the particle の instead of か. This is a very common way of asking a question, with a slight rise in pitch at the end in conversational Japanese.
どんなクラブに入るの means What kind of club will you join?
みゆき: スポーツがすきね。 クラブかつどうか、どんなクラブに入るの。

7日目 exams, school rules, and otherschool activities
learning outcomesCompare Japanese school rules to those of your own school.
learning intentionsIn this lesson you will learn to:
• use てください/ないで to describe school rules.
Schools everywhere tend to have a lot of rules about what students can and can’t do. You already know how to ask someone to do something, using てください as in these sentences:
こくばんを みてください。 Please look at the blackboard
おちゃを のんでください。 Please drink some green tea. ないでください
To ask someone not to do something, you use.
ないでください to say ‘please do not . . . ’
For example:
えい語で はなさないでください。 Please don’t speak in English.
きょうしつで たべないでください。 Please don’t eat in the classroom.
はやく、 うちに かえらないでください。 Please don’t go home early.
しんぱいしないでください。 Please don’t worry.
ないで
ないで is the plain present negative ending of a verb in its て form. It can be used to join sentences just like the regular て form.
For example:
けんたは、 はやく うちに かえらないで、 おそくまで、 がっこうで えい語を べんきょうしました。Kenta didn’t go home early. He studied English at school until late.
きょうしつで あそばないで、 そとで あそんでください。Please don’t play in the classroom, play outside.
ワニータは、 日本語を べんきょうしないで ネットボールを しました。 Juanita didn’t study Japanese. She played netball.
24 JP2001 © te aho o te kura pounamu
It can also be used to mean without doing the action in the verb, as in:
ワニータは、 あさごはんを たべないで、 うちをでました。Juanita left home without eating breakfast.

school rules こうそくJapanese schools tend to have rules for almost all aspects of students’ lives. These can range from the usual uniform codes to strict rules about whether students can wear earrings or dye their hair. Some schools have rules that students can’t do part-time work, or can’t be out after 11pm at night, even on weekends. Junior high schools tend to have stricter rules than high schools. All schools insist that students must take their shoes off when they get to school and change into shoes that are only worn inside the school buildings.

Here’s a translation of the conversation.
Alana is an exchange student in Japan and she is talking to her host family mother, Mrs Tanabe. From tomorrow she will start at a new Japanese high school. They are looking at a map.
Mother: Fujimi High School is a big new and good high school.
Alana: Is that right? I’m looking forward to it.
Mother: Tomorrow, you’ll go by train and walk to school from the station.
Alana: Is it far to school?
Mother: No, it’s not far. Walking takes about five minutes. Look at the map. Walk straight ahead from the station, and if you turn right at the second corner, you’ll see the school buildings on the left. Do you understand?
Alana: Yes, I understand. It’s simple, isn’t it? From what time is school tomorrow?
Mother: It’s from 8 o’clock.
Alana: Is that right? I intend to wake up early in the morning.
