An Analytical Study of the Contents of the Upgraded

English Course "Flying High'' of First Secondary Grade

Abstract

This study aims to assess the real conditions of the Flying High curriculum and to analyze

its content critically in the light of a number of dimensions; i.e. characteristics of the format,

objectives, content, language skills, grammar, vocabulary, exercises and activities and language

used. The descriptive approach (content analysis) is adopted. In light of the study results, the study

recommends that there is a need to involve Saudi English curricula designers and to benefit from

their extensive understanding of the religious and social requirements of the Saudi society. There

is also a need to involve Saudi women in the process of text content preparation, selection and

writing of topics . This will contribute to the change of the stereotypical image of the female, and

effectively present women’s functions without a compromise concerning their basic roles. There is

a need to focus on quality and avoid overload, and to adopt a comprehensive perspective that

involves all the four language skills of learning language. There should be an introduction at the

beginning of the book and an assessment questionnaire at its end, addressed to students, teachers

and parents. There is also a need to refer to the sources and references of the book. Besides,

student’s attention should be drawn to the new words in each lesson, whether by highlighting them

at the top or side of the page in the form of a list or perhaps in a different color in the same

sentence. It is necessary also to direct students to websites at the end of the book to help them to

improve and develop their language capacities.
