HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital has been meeting the health care needs of our region for almost 140 years and we are excited about

delivering this same high-quality care for decades to come. It truly is a journey, and one that I am especially privileged to be on, along with our physician partners, each and every colleague, and most importantly the patients and families we serve.

The St. Elizabeth’s family is one team, led by our Core Values of Respect, Care, Competence and Joy and driven, each and every day, to fulfill our mission “to reveal and embody Christ’s healing love for all people through our high quality Franciscan health care ministry.”

We live our mission in many ways at St. Elizabeth’s. Delivering high-quality care is a huge part of our mission. St. Elizabeth’s has been named a Top 50 Hospital in Cardiovascular care for three years in a row by Truven Analytics and received Platinum Performance recognition from ACTION Registry’s Get With The Guidelines program. We are also a Top Performer in Key Quality Measures, as recognized by The Joint Commission, for our exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes. Our commitment and dedication to quality leads to better outcomes for the patients we serve and they will always be our top priority.

n A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Our Mission-driven journey continues

leading cardiac care with the addition of a $2.6 million Electrophysiology Lab, allowing us to provide high-level cardiac ablation procedures. Through our continued partnership with Eastside Health District and Cardon Health, we have enrolled more than 1,200 people in the Health Insurance Marketplace. This year we celebrated the 20th cohort of our Versant RN residency, demonstrating our continued commitment to provide excellent clinicians to the region. With JOY as a Core Value, we were excited to sponsor, together with HSHS Home Care Southern Illinois, a new play area inside St. Clair Square. This fun-filled space now provides an open invitation to play in a safe environment all year long to the youth of the community and the opportunity for parents and grandparents to enjoy time with their families. The team at St. Elizabeth’s continues to upgrade our private patient rooms and waiting areas throughout the hospital, adding family friendly technology and furnishings to make our facility a healing environment for all.

Most important though is the recognition that all of the technology and awards would not be possible if it weren’t for our dedicated colleagues who truly live our mission every day. If you know someone who is interested in joining this combination of caring people, state-of-the-art technology and forward thinking that allows St. Elizabeth’s to be positioned as the choice for health care in Southwestern Illinois, now and in the future, please encourage them to learn more at steliz.org. The excitement of our journey is just beginning and we want you to share it with you.

Sincerely, Dr. Shelley Harris

Dr. Harris is fulfilling Interim CEO duties at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. She has more than 30 years of health care leadership experience and has enjoyed being a resident of the region for over 50 years.

n NEW FOR THE KIDDOS

Play Area Opens in St. Clair Square Mall

St. Clair Square, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and HSHS Home Care Southern Illinois partnered to build a delightful new play area inside the mall. It’s made for toddlers and young children, and features a replica of the new St. Elizabeth’s hospital – only with cool slides and tunnels!

The Grand Opening and ribbon cutting was August 7, with plenty of eager children in attendance to inaugurate it properly. The play area gives little ones a place to burn off their energy while their parents take a shopping break on the benches that encircle it.

Michael Hagen, General Manager of St. Clair Square, came to work at the mall in November and noticed right away that a play area was needed. He approached St. Elizabeth’s for a sponsorship, and we were very pleased to become a partner on the project to provide this as a community service.

“All the kudos for this go to HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and HSHS Home Care Southern Illinois,” Hagen said enthusiastically. “They had the foresight and commitment to make this investment into our community. They are 110% of the reason this is here. They made it happen!”

The play area is on the lower level, center court, by JCPenny. This is traditionally the area where children visit Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, so the addition of the play area will make those holiday events even more enjoyable for families.

New Electrophysiology Lab Provides High-Tech Treatments for Irregular HeartbeatsOur $2.6 million investment in technology is paying off in patient outcomes

Just one year ago, in September 2014, Prairie Heart Institute at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s became the first hospital in the Southwestern Illinois region to perform complex radio frequency ablations to treat irregular heartbeats. Seeing a growing population of patients who suffer from irregular heartbeats, the hospital invested $2.6 million to purchase new technology and build an entire Electrophysiology Lab (EP Lab) to fill this need for our patients.

Dr. Paban Saha, who performed the first ablation, is now able to regularly perform these highly complex procedures for the entire spectrum of arrhythmias. The technology delivers a higher rate of success with fewer complications.

In the EP Lab, Dr. Saha is able to put a flexible tube into the legs and up into the heart, find where the arrhythmia is occurring, and cauterize (burn) the circuits that cause them.

This delicate ablation is performed using a Jet Ventilator, which does the job of continuously pumping blood to the body, while allowing the heart to hold still during the procedure. Dr. Saha was trained on this technology, and is the only doctor within a 400 to 600 mile radius who is using it.

“Many patients with Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib) were facing a lifetime of taking medications to suppress their irregular heartbeat,” explained Dr. Saha. “We’re now able to provide a permanent solution for many of these patients.”

The best candidates for A-Fib ablation are those who go in and out of A-Fib, rather than those who are continuously in A-Fib. However, Dr. Saha performs the procedure on both. He has performed the procedure on more than 160 patients so far, and has seen an 80% success rate. Only 20% of patients have recurring irregular heartbeat following the procedure. Some of those go on medications and others repeat the procedure. For those who repeat, there is an 80% - 90% success rate.

“Everyone who has had the procedure has improved,” said Dr. Saha. “There is a waiting period to see how successful the procedure is, for each patient. But an 80% - 90% success rate is very exciting.”

“Arrhythmias are becoming more common, to the point of being an

People do not always know they have an irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia, as it often doesn’t have noticeable symptoms. Often an arrhythmia is only detected during a physical exam. Others have noticeable

symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, feeling faint, shortness of breath, racing heartbeat,

slow heartbeat or fluttering in the chest.

It’s important to diagnose and treat arrhythmias, even if there are no noticeable symptoms, as it puts you at higher risk for a stroke.

If you had an irregular heartbeat, would you know it?

Who is at risk for developing an irregular heartbeat?

If you have any of these conditions, you may be at a higher risk for A-Fib or other arrhythmia:

n High blood pressuren Sleep apnean Diabetesn High cholesteroln Previous heart attackn Over/underactive thyroidn Stress

You may also be at higher risk if you:

n Smoken Abuse drugsn Drink too much alcohol or caffeinen Take certain prescription medicationsn Take certain dietary supplements and herbal treatments

Genetics does play a role in developing an irregular heartbeat, but good diet and exercise can help prevent it.

epidemic,” said Dr. Saha. “It’s partly because of our aging population, however I’ve performed the treatment on a patient who was just 25 years old.”

“People who have tried other therapies for arrhythmias without success, can come to St. Elizabeth’s for an ablation, and be able to enjoy

a better quality of life,” said Bonnie Schnieder, Director of Heart and Vascular Services.

“It is a real privilege to be able to provide this level of technology. And, we are truly blessed to have Dr. Saha, who chose this technology and has the skills to use it to benefit our community.”

HSHS St. Elizabeth’s is Designated as an Emergent Stroke Ready Hospital by Illinois Department of Public Health

If you or a loved one has a stroke, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital has the technology and specialists available anytime day or night to quickly assess and treat you. Seconds count during a stroke, so we are deeply committed to providing faster treatment, which often results in better outcomes.

We have partnered with C3O Telemedicine, which connects our ER team to a stroke neurologist, who will evaluate you and consult us through teleconferencing. We can administer tPA, an intravenous drug that breaks up clots to restore blood flow. With Stroke Telemedicine, you’ll have immediate access to high-quality stroke intervention, day or night.

“After your stroke, we provide exceptional care to help you recover. Our hospital Rehab Unit is one of the few facilities in Southern Illinois to be accredited by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. We are the only accredited facility available in St. Clair County,” says Alison Kennedy, BSN, RN, Stroke Program Coordinator, Emergency Services at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

In June 2015, Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) colleagues, Hospital Sisters, board members, government

officials, civic leaders, clergy and other project supporters joined St. Elizabeth’s in a ground breaking and blessing ceremony on the future site of our replacement hospital and ambulatory care center.

St. Elizabeth’s received unanimous approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board (HFSRB) in April to begin construction on the new $300 million medical campus along I-64 and Green Mount Road in St. Clair County. The Certificate of Need approved by the HFSRB allows St. Elizabeth’s to replace the current hospital, which was built in

the 1950s, with a modern hospital that will be built on a 114-acre campus with an adjoining ambulatory care center.

The new location is centrally located for the Southwestern Illinois region that St. Elizabeth’s serves. It will also be closer to Scott Air Force Base and the community hospitals that refer patients to St. Elizabeth’s, such as HSHS affiliate hospitals St. Joseph’s in Highland and St. Joseph’s in Breese, as well as other surrounding community hospitals.

The new St. Elizabeth’s is designed for the future of health care delivery, which is trending toward outpatient care. The facility will include 144 private patient rooms, an emergency department,

state-of-the art operating rooms, modern birthing suites, an advanced intensive care unit, and inpatient rehabilitation. The adjacent ambulatory care center will offer various outpatient services such as lab, imaging and therapy, and include medical office space for more than 100 physicians.

“One reason we wanted to build this state-of-the art facility is to attract physician specialists to the Metro East,” said Dr. Shelley Harris, Interim CEO at St. Elizabeth’s. “Right now, around 15,000 Metro East patients go across the river for inpatient treatment. Our new facility, with new technology, will encourage physicians to work here and treat patients locally. This is better for the patient, for our local

state-of-the art operating rooms, modern birthing suites, an advanced intensive care unit, and inpatient rehabilitation.

This is better for the patient, for our local

economy, and improves quality of life for our Southern Illinois residents.”

St. Elizabeth’s will continue to provide outpatient services and maintain numerous support functions at its Belleville campus, including an urgent care clinic, radiology and laboratory services, primary and specialty care physicians’ offices, and physical and occupational therapy services. Many administrative services and departments will also stay in Belleville.

“We look forward to opening in the fall of 2017, and continuing to serve our mission in a bigger, more impactful way,” said Harris. You can follow our progress at supportsteliz.org.

n AFFORDABLE CARE ACT

Supporting our Mission to Make Health Care Accessible

Since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Open Enrollment for the Health Insurance Marketplace began in 2014, about 11.4 million people have explored their options, learned about the financial assistance available, and signed up for or renewed a health plan.

In accordance with our mission, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s did our part to create an environment that facilitated and encouraged community members to enroll in a health insurance plan. Patients who do not have health insurance or a primary care physician often seek care at our facility, so we partnered with a local health department to set up an on-site enrollment help center.

During the past enrollment period, St. Elizabeth’s and the health department collaboratively fielded over 300 calls and enrolled 103 individuals into the expanded Medicaid program and 45 people into regular Marketplace health plans. The next Open Enrollment period starts November 1.

Intensivist ProgramImproving Patient Care, Shortening Hospital Stays

HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital started an Intensivist Program just two years ago, and the benefits to patients, and even physicians, have been beyond what we expected. The Intensivist Program is the “gold standard” of care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Rather than patients receiving care from their physicians making rounds, or even having a physician on duty 24/7, the Intensivist Program has specially trained critical care physicians in the ICU 24/7.

Critical care physicians can be trained in both internal medicine and surgery, and have additional training or are board certified in critical care medicine. With this level of expertise ready and available at all times in ICU, physician care is much more immediate. Patients can be more closely monitored, and course of treatment can be adjusted on the spot.

“We’ve seen a reduction in the number of ventilation days per patient, a reduction in number of days patients spend in the ICU, and also a reduction of days in the hospital overall,” said Dr. Martin Musumbi, Medical Director of the Critical Care Unit. “Because there is always a critical care physician here, patients don’t have to wait until their doctor arrives the next morning to determine if they’ve improved enough to be taken off the ventilator. That decision can be made right now, even if it’s the middle of the night.”

The secondary benefit of the Intensivist Program is it elevates the hospital’s ability to handle more difficult cases. “It has allowed other specialists to handle more complex procedures here, knowing there will be the expertise involved in the ICU,” said Dr. Musumbi. “That applies to the Emergency Room, too. The ER doctors can treat the more critical cases here, because of our ICU, rather than transporting them to another hospital. We are able to handle those complex cases right here, which is better for the patients and the community.”

St. Elizabeth’s welcomed our fourth full-time intensivist, Dr. Yashaswi Belvadi, into the program this summer.

Diabetes can be daunting to manage, but it really helps to know you’re not alone in dealing with the daily challenges. Our Outpatient Nutrition Counseling service team can help you learn to control your diabetes, and help your family learn along with you.

We offer two free diabetes support groups for adults that meet monthly. You can get to know others who are facing the same challenges you are, share experiences, and hear a speaker discuss important topics such as carbohydrate control, beating the blues, stress management, cardiovascular health and more.

If you participate in a diabetes support group, you also get access to St. Elizabeth’s Gym for free. We’ll train you on the equipment and then you can join us for weekly workouts and yoga sessions.

We feel it’s very important to connect with others and enjoy positive experiences as you work to take charge of your diabetes. It’s easy to get discouraged when you face it alone, or are the only one in your family who has to be careful about what you eat. Having a caring support group can inspire you to eat better, exercise more, and stay on track.

Virtual care is an innovative new health initiative that allows patients to access a doctor 24/7 using a computer, tablet or smart phone. If you wake up at 2 a.m. with stomach pains or a rash, for example, instead of worrying and waiting until office hours, you can have a virtual office visit right then.

To request a visit, simply go to anytimecare.com and in about 20 minutes, you’ll be discussing your symptoms with a board certified provider. He or she will evaluate you, make a diagnosis and determine treatment, including calling in a prescription to a pharmacy. The cost of the visit is $29.

“Virtual care is the 21st century version of a house call,” said Loren Hughes, MD, President of HSHS Medical Group. “Illness doesn’t always strike during regular office hours. Virtual care gives patients access to the care they need when they need it – whether it’s the middle of the night, a weekend or a holiday.”

HSHS Medical Group launched Virtual Care on May 5, and it’s available to anyone in Illinois. You can be at home, or away in Chicago and have the same access to Virtual Care. Or, if you have an out-of-state relative visiting, they’d have access too.

With Virtual Care, health care becomes more convenient, more immediate, and less time consuming. It eliminates the need

to schedule an appointment or drive to a doctor’s office. Virtual care has benefited many patients so far, especially

parents of small children. They’ve found it’s much easier to consult with a provider from home than to pack up a sick child and drive to an urgent care facility.

You can use Virtual Care for non-emergency issues, such as:n Allergiesn Cold or flun Respiratory or sinus infectionn Bladder or urinary tract infectionn Bites and bee stingsn Fevern Headachen Pink eyen Rashn Yeast infectionn Diarrhea or vomitingn Other non-emergency symptoms
