NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) provide a qualification based on your competency at work. These are not “taught” – candidates are

guided by their Assessor (appointed by the College) to produce a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates their skills and knowledge over anumber of work-related topics.Level 2 NVQs – equate to GCSE level grades A* - C. The Civil Service requires an additional GCSE in English for entry at AdministrativeOfficer level.

Level 3 NVQs – equate to A-Levels. This is acceptable entry for an Administrative Officer within the Civil Service and satisfies educationalstandards for promotion to Executive Officer without the need for additional qualifications.

Level 4 NVQs – equate to Higher Educational levels.

Centre for Lifelong Learningin association with the Isle of Man Department of Education

Continuing Education courses in 2009-10 for all adult learners

Spice Girls and Suffragettes with Dr Chris Cowin, Manx Witches, Fairies and charms with

Yvonne Creswell and a graveyard survey with Andrew Jamieson – these are some of the

unusual subjects that will be covered in the University of Liverpool Continuing Education

programme in 2009-2010.

These part time Continuing Education courses provide the opportunity to learn about a widerange of subjects in relaxed, informal surroundings. Many of the courses are day courses held

on a Saturday, ideal for anyone who would like to find out more about a subject that interests

them. No background knowledge or qualifications are needed. The lecturers are specialists in

their subject area, many of them travelling from the United Kingdom to lecture.

Courses cover a wide range of subjects including history, art history, music, Egyptology and

archaeology. For those interested in art history, Frank Milner will be lecturing about the period

‘From Hogarth to Turner’ and Sandra Pollard will be talking about ‘Angels and Goddesses –

signs and symbols in Renaissance painting’. For music lovers, Dr Fenella Bazin will be lecturing

about classical compositions in depth, John Petit will be talking about ‘The Troubled life of

Robert Schumann’ and Professor Roderick Swanston will be presenting a course about ‘The end

of the world: Vienna, music, art and life, 1870-1916’. Literature courses will include ‘Earliest

English literature’ with Mike Hoy and a chance to consider English novels in depth with Dr

Jennifer Kewley Draskau.

These are just some of the courses to be included on the programme starting in October 2009 –
