What is academic excellence? At MCLA, it’s rich, diverse

classes and dynamic academic programs led by faculty

who love to teach. It’s the freedom to learn both inside

and outside the classroom, and the chance to explore fresh

perspectives. It’s all the knowledge, experience, and support

you need to chart your course and begin your journey.

Our broad liberal arts curriculum empowers students to

explore a little bit of everything—from theatre and teaching

to political science and athletic training. It helps you develop

the communication and critical thinking skills needed to

succeed in any field, and gives you the freedom and flexibility

to find your true calling.

Giant, impersonal lecture halls? Not here. MCLA classes are

small and our professors really get to know their students. You

will receive instruction and guidance from passionate faculty

truly committed to your success.

“I like that MCLA is a small college. It was a great fit for me because I was in an environment that guaranteed better access to my professors.”

When Jerry arrived at MCLA, he decided to major in biology because he

loves science. While his initial goal was to become a physician assistant,

his MCLA experience encouraged him to aim even higher: he now plans

to become a doctor. After taking numerous science courses and working

“tirelessly” every semester to earn excellent grades, Kiahon proved to himself

that he is capable of being successful in medical school. “The great access to

tutors, teacher’s assistants, and to my professors all played a major role in my

academic success at MCLA. I like that MCLA is a small college. It was a great

fit for me because I was in an environment that guaranteed better access to

my professors. I loved my experience here.” Jerry’s undergraduate time at

MCLA culminated in being selected for the Massachusetts “29 Who Shine,”

which honors students across all of the public higher education campuses.

06

With multiple opportunities to get involved

in undergraduate research, internships,

and service learning courses, MCLA brings

academics to life. You’ll apply classroom

instruction to practical challenges, giving

you insight and real-world experience that

prepares you for the future.

inteRnsHiPs

Applying classroom theory in a hands-on work setting provides an opportunity to

enhance your education and explore possible career paths. Practical experience is

a critical step in preparing for your post-graduation success and is one of the key

factors in landing a great job or in differentiating your application to graduate school.

The Undergraduate Research Program encompasses independent scholarly

activity by students in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Driven by the many

opportunities for interaction between students and faculty, undergraduate

research at MCLA has expanded dramatically in recent years. The program

supports students with independent study opportunities in many disciplines,

small research/travel grants, the MCLA Scholar program, and a dynamic annual

campus-wide conference for presenting their work.

Beyond the campus, MCLA is a proud member of COPLAC, the Council of Public

Liberal Arts Colleges. MCLA students joined with peers from other colleges

in the Northeast to present at the regional COPLAC Undergraduate Research

Conference, hosted this year at MCLA.

First-year students interested in science, technology, math, and

Founded to provide a wider range of learning opportunities for highly

motivated students, the Honors Program at MCLA offers a variety of courses

with the depth and interdisciplinary content sought by students who seek

added academic challenges. The Program promotes a strong sense of

community between students and faculty and builds upon their shared interests.

By bringing together strong students to study in concert with challenging

faculty, the Program fosters a community of scholars dedicated to the exchange

of innovative ideas and personal knowledge.

08

Build your future. Today’s economy requires global

perspective, and many of our students choose to study

abroad or participate in a travel course. At MCLA, there

are many ways to explore new cultures, enhancing your

academic experience, personal growth, and professional

development—leading to powerful results.

NSE is a program for undergraduate exchange within the United

States, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada.

Instead of crossing oceans, NSE students cross state, regional,

provincial, and cultural borders. Participating in NSE can be

exhilarating, intellectually enriching, and one of the most significant

experiences of your undergraduate education.

tRAvel coURses

Our travel courses meet regularly on-campus before and following

travel. They include an academic experience of reading, research, and

reporting. The courses are typically junior-level, carry three upper-

level credits toward graduation, and are an excellent opportunity to

combine travel and study.

stUdY ABRoAd

Travel abroad is a gateway to personal growth and learning first-hand

about other people and other places. What better way to prepare

for globalization than by experiencing it in college? Globalization

of communication, commerce, arts, and culture is revolutionizing

societies everywhere. Future success in business, politics, or your

chosen career will increasingly depend not only on professional

expertise, but on personal familiarity with clients, customers, and

associates from different cultures. Your learning as an MCLA student

studying in Europe, Asia, or the Americas will prepare you to meet

tomorrow’s challenges. It may also change your life today.

Embracing the Diversity that Defines Us

Diversity touches every part of MCLA, from our broad

liberal arts curriculum to our celebration of the cultures

and traditions that reflect our community. It’s how we

foster understanding, support our students’ needs, and

prepare them to become successful global citizens.

“My goal is to impart an understanding of the

significance of the undergraduate college experience:

developing lifelong friendships, taking advantage

of internships and study abroad programs at MCLA,

applying newly acquired knowledge, and as incoming

students, debating concepts well beyond limits

allowed in most high school classrooms. Additionally,

I want to encourage students to find a sense of

balance early on in their academic careers, to ensure

necessary attention to studies and a positive and safe

social experience. Finally, self-advocacy is important.

Students must realize assistance is available for both

academic and social concerns, and be familiar with

how to locate such services.”

Our liberal arts education prepares students for

career success and graduate school. From science

and business to education and the arts, you’ll find

our graduates everywhere; such as:

“MCLA gives you opportunities to get involved from day

one. I was on air at the campus radio station while still a

freshman and worked my way up to editor-in-chief of the

school newspaper. You don’t get that kind of practical

experience everywhere. MCLA provided me with strong

skills and an impressive resume. That led me to ESPN, where

I work with professional athletes, agents, and analysts. I’ve

always loved sports, but never imagined that I’d find a job

where I’m on the sidelines at the Super Bowl!”

“Religious studies is a field that draws on many disciplines:

literature, history, philosophy, and even sociology. I knew

a liberal arts foundation would prepare me to study it

more deeply. MCLA introduced me to so many different

intellectual ideas, and gave me the chance to work with and

learn from professors who truly love to teach. That rubbed

off on me, and I’m now attending Harvard to become a

professor of religious studies. MCLA has been key to my

success – it’s a place where you can achieve great things.”

At MCLA, the overall goal of the housing program is to set

the stage for learning by providing a living environment that

is conducive to academic pursuits, personal growth, and the

development of lifelong friendships. Members of the Residential

Programs & Services (RPS) staff work collectively to ensure

each residence area is in good condition, safe, supportive,

and enriched with a wide array of out-of-classroom learning

opportunities. Most importantly, we help each resident find

a comfortable “home away from home,” which we believe is

critical to a positive college experience. On-campus housing is

guaranteed for four years in one of our three residence areas:

to offer, she knew she had found that college. Deanna says “MCLA is

a place that is incredibly welcoming and accepting, and the staff took

time to make sure I successfully transitioned into the MCLA community.

I’ve never been around so many creative, friendly, inspirational people.

There are plenty of resources to help you carve out your own place on

campus, with support from academic and extra-curricular advisors.”

As an RA, she has the chance to help shape someone’s experience in

college: “I get to know my residents on a personal level and provide

them guidance. I try my best to make the residence halls a second

involved because “it helps me to stay organized and entertained, and

keeps me striving to be a well-rounded student.”
