IV. Takdang-Aralin Basahin ang seleksyon sa aralin 14 pp. 33-34 ng Liwanag 6

ScienceDate: Jan. 20, 2014I.Objective: Describe how an earthquake occursII. Subject Matter: Earthquakes References: Into the Future: Science and Health 6 pp. 202-206 Science Alive 6 pp. 287-306III. ProcedureA. Preparation1. Weather Report the northeast monsoon is prevailing in the country this January2. Trivia: The landmasses of the world were once joined together in a single landmass. This supercontinent is called Pangeae. The moving hot materials in the asthenosphere caused the lithosphere to break apart into rock layers called plates. The convection current in the asthenosphere caused the plates to move towards each other or away from each other.

B. Developmental Activities1. Motivation: Demonstrate to the pupils how plates move.2. PresentationDue to the movement of the plates, the solid lithosphere breaks forming faults. When rocks in the fault are stress they move creating earthquakes. Lets find out more about earthquakes.3. Activity and discussionGather data and answer the following questions1. What is a fault?2. How do you describe the epicenter of an earthquake?3. What is the focus of an earthquake?4. Why does Indonesia, Philippines and Japan frequently experience earthquakes?5. How do you differentiate intensity from magnitude?6. How do you describe intensity 1 earthquake?7. What is the intensity when the earthquake is felt by several persons at rest.8. What is the intensity when the shaking of the ground is felt generally by everyone?9. How do you describe a magnitude 6-7 earthquake?10. What instrument is used to record the intensity of an earthquake?11-15. Give five destructive effects of earthquakes?

4. Generalization1. Earthquake is the shaking of the ground due to the movement of the earths crust (tectonic) or movement of magma under the ground (volcanic)2. Fault fracture or break in the crust3. Focus the place under the ground where the earthquake origin4. Epicenter the surface of the earth directly above the focus5. Magnitude or size of an earthquake is the amount of energy released.6. Intensity is the measure of the vibrations or shaking in a particular place7. Earthquake intensities1- Hardly perceptible shock 2. Extremely feeble shock 3. Very feeble shock4- feeble shock 5 - moderate 6 - Fairly strong 7- strong 8- very strong 9-extremely strong8. Magnitude below 3 hardly perceptibleMagnitude 3-4 - very feeble shocksMagnitude 4-5 - feeble shocksMagnitude 5-6 - moderateMagnitude 6-7 - strongMagnitude 7-8 - majorMagnitude 8-9 - great earthquake9. Effects of earthquakes tsunami, damages to properties, death of plants, animals and man5. ApplicationWhat is the first thing that you should remember if there is an earthquake?

6. EvaluationWrite A if it describes an earthquake and B if not.1. Shaking of the ground2. Flowing of magma3. Tsunami4. Movement of the crustal plates5. Storm surge

IV. Assignment Study about volcanoes

ScienceDate: Jan. 21, 2014I. Objective: Describe a volcanoII. Subject Matter: Volcanoes References: Into the Future: Science and Health 6 pp. 210-212 Science Alive 6 pp. 310-319III. ProcedureA. Preparation1. Weather Report2. Review: Earthquakes3. Review DrillB. Developmental Activities1. Motivation: Tell a story about how a farmer (Dionisio Pulido) in Paricutin Mexico who was working in his field in February 20, 1943 at 4:00 pm saw the ground breaks and ashes coming up from the crack. Trees burst into flames and the fiery eruption continued through the night and a 160 feet high volcano was formed.2. PresentationThe teacher will tell the pupils that in the days lesson they will find out more about volcanoes3. Activity/DiscussionAnswer the following questions1. What is a volcano?2. Differentiate magma from lava3. Where do molten materials that come out of a volcano come from?4. What do you call the small hole where magma comes out of a volcano?5. How do you differentiate active from inactive volcanoes?6. Arrange the following based on how volcanoes are formed?___ a volcano is formed___ magma slowly moves up the crack on the surface___ magma comes out and rocks and ashes piles up.___ magma forms a deep pool in the crust

4. Generalization1. Volcano is a mountain or hill with a vent on top.2. Activie volcanoes erupted or shows signs of volcanic activities.3. Inactive volcanoes are those that have not erupted for 600 years.4. Magma are molten rock materials beneath the earths surface and inside the volcano.5. Lava are the molten materials that have already came out on the earth surface.6. Parts of a volcano magma chamber, vents7. How volcanoes are formeda. Magma escapes from the mantle and forms a magma pool in the earths crustb. Magma slowly moves up the cracks.c. Magma oozes out and rocks and ashes piles up on the surface.5. ApplicationDraw a volcano and label the parts6. EvaluationIdentification1. What landform has a vent or hole on top?2. What kind of volcano shows signs of volcanic activities?3. What two volcanoes in the Philippines are active?4. What is magma?5. What is lava?

IV. Assignment Research on the effects of volcanic eruptions.
