03인터뷰 북촌동양문화박물관 관장님 “인성교육의 역할까지 해나가는 박물관으로 나아가야”글·사진 I 유정미, 대학생 기자단(성균관대)Interview: Director of the Asian Art Museum“Museums must Pursue up to the Role of Spiritual Education”Written and photographed by Yoo Jeong-mi of Student Reporter Group(Sungkyunkwan Univ.) 박물관을 간단히 소개하자면우리 박물관은 유교와 불교, 민속과 관련한 유물들이 주로 전시되어 있는 곳이다. 이 모든 유물을 포함하는 이름을 지으려다보니 사실 ‘동양문화’만한 것이 없었고, 이런 이유로 현재 박물관 이름이 ‘북촌동양문화박물관’이 되었다. 동양문화에는 사실 유·불·선이 모두 포함되지만 현재 박물관에는 선교 유물은 없다. 그 외 유물은 내가 아주 어렸을 때부터 꾸준히 모아온 유물들로 채웠다. 선비 정신을 담은 전시관과 불교관, 민속관 등이 있다.

Q. Please introduce your museum briefly. A. The museum exhibits mainly the relics related with Confucianism, Buddhism and folklores. When I was going to name the museum including all of these themes, in fact there was no better name than the ‘Asian art’ and now it has the name of ‘Asian Art Museum’. Historically, the Asian culture includes all of Confucianism, Buddhism and Zen, however the museum doesn’t have relics of Zen at the moment. I have filled other relics with those I had been continuously collecting from childhood. Currently, it runs the Gallery of classical scholar sprits, Gallery of Buddhism and Gallery of folklores.

박물관의 위치가 특별해보이는데우리 박물관은 위치가 역사성이 있다. 박물관 자체가 한옥마을 한복판에 있을 뿐 아니라 전망대에 오르면 동서남북의 사신사가 한 눈에 다 보인다. 또한 창덕궁의 비원과 경복궁이 전부 다 보이는 곳이며, 조선 왕조의 6백년 역사가 살아 숨쉬는 곳이다. 특히 맹사성 선생의 집터로 알려져 있기도 하다.

Q. The museum seems to have a special location. A. Its site has the historical meaning. Not only is the museum itself situated at the center of Hanok village, also its observatory shows the Four Shrines of all directions at a glance. Also people can view whole of the Secret Garden of Changdeokgung and Gyeongbokgung Palace, and there the history of the 600-year-old Joseon Dynasty breathes. It is known as the house site of the Scholar Maeng Sa-seong.

손수 박물관을 지으셨다고 들었는데2009년에 개장했고, 내가 직접 박물관을 건설한 것이 맞다. 지금도 여기저기 수리하고 넓히기도 하면서 공사를 진행하고 있다. 이 박물관을 방문하기 위해선 높은 곳까지 올라와야하기 때문에 외국인들이 감동을 받고

내려가길 바라기 때문에 더 열심히 인 것 같다.

Q. I heard that you built the museum by yourself.A. It opened in 2009 and it is true. Even now, I am engaged in construction of the museum by way of repairs or expansion here and there. As people labor to come uphill to reach at this relatively high place, it seems that I am exerting more efforts to impress any visiting foreigners.

이곳에서 가장 소중한 유물이라면 어떠한 것을 꼽을 수 있을까경복궁 강녕전이 보이는 전경이 몇 억이 넘는 유물보다도 소중한 것이다. 과거 맹사성 선생에게 가르침을 받고 있던 세종대왕께서는 강녕전에서 잠드시기 전 이 곳을 바라보았다고 한다. 만약 등불이 켜져있다면 당신께서도 계속 학문을 익히셨고 이곳의 등불이 꺼진 후에야 잠이 드셨다. 강녕전이 보이는 전경은 조선의 아름다운 사제관계를 담고 있는 역사인 것이다.Q. Can you name the most valuable relics of the museum?A. Its availability of the whole view of Gangnyeonjeon, Gyeongbokgung – the sleeping place of the king – is more precious than any relics worth several million dollars. The King Sejong, learning from the Scholar Maeng Sa-seong, was said to have looked up this place before his sleeping. If the lamp of the scholar’s house was alight, the king continued to study,studying and he went to bed only after finding the lamp was off. Its story typically shows impressive relations between a teacher and learner historically.

청소년을 위한 체험 프로그램이 많아 보이는데나는 우리나라가 선진국으로 도약하기 위해서는 유교 및 불교의 선비 정신이나 무소유 정신을 통해 인성교육을 강화해야 한다는 확고한 신념을 가지고 있다. 이와 같은 생각으로 인해 현재 입시 위주의 교육에 만족할 수 없었고 박물관의 다양한 프로그램을 체험하며 청소년들이 희망과 꿈을 갖기를 바라고 있다. 지금은 전통 다도, 서당 교육, 좌우명 갖기 등의 교육 등이 이뤄지고 있다.Q. The museum seems to provide a number of experience programs for the young.A. I have a firm belief that the national education should strengthen the spiritual side of education by emphasizing scholarly spirits of Confucianism and Buddhism or non-possession so as for the nation to jump off to an advanced country. In this light, I couldn’t be satisfied with the current education system focusing on entrance examinations for the university. And I hope its various experience programs can offer the young people with hopes and dream for the future. For the moment, educational programs such as traditional tea ceremony, Seodang education(traditional), motto-cherishing are running.

북촌동양문화박물관과 같은 사립 박물관은 어떻게 유지될 수 있을까사립 박물관들의 가장 큰 문제이기도 한데, 관광지에 있지도 않고 재벌이 운영 하지도 않는 사립 박물관들은 현상 유지되기가 굉장히 어렵다. 계속 이어져 가기 위해 나는 흑자가 나는 박물관을 만들어 새로운 패러다임을 이끌어가야 한다고 생각한다. 이를 위해선 물론 국민의 인식도 깨야 하지만 박물관 자체 노력도 굉장히 중요하다. 박물관에서 서당 체험을 하고 다도 체험, 문묘 투어 등 가슴에 남는 경험을 줄 수 있는 체험프로그램 개발이 필요하다.Q. I doubt private museums like the Asian Art Museum can be properly sustained. A. Well, actually it is the biggest problem facing any private museum. As you can understand, it is very difficult to maintain a private museum properly, unless located at the tour spots or operated by the financially affordable companies. To sustain a museum, I think a new paradigm must be introduced by operating museums in the black. For this, people must be enlightened needless to say, but also the museums themselves have to extend their efforts. It is necessary to develop experience programs imbuing people with heartfelt experiences such as Seodang experience, tea ceremony, tour of Confucian shrines.

모두를 얼어붙게 만든 겨울이 지나고 따뜻한 햇살이 비추자 북촌 한옥마을에는 오밀조밀 모여든 한옥을 관람하려는 사람들로 가득하다.하지만 빠듯한 관광 일정 탓일까. 그들의 관광 모습은 그저 한옥의 겉모습을 눈으로 훑으며 사진을 찍는 것이 전부이다. 북촌 한옥마을은 우리나라의 필수 관광 코스인데도 말이다.이제 보는 것으로만 끝내는 그들에게 북촌 8경 외에 ‘제대로’ 즐길 수 있는 새로운 것을 소개하고자 한다. 아마 이 글을 본 관광객들은 북촌 8경이 아닌 북촌 9경을 기억하지 않을까?As spring lands through such cold waves of this winter, there are plenty of people who would like to view closely-gathered Hanok(traditional Korean house) at Bukchon Hanok Village.Probably due to their tight schedule, all of what they do usually is just seeing through the outward look of Hanok and taking photos, though the village is a must-see tourist course in Korea. I would like to introduce some new sights other than current Eight Sights of the village for the visitors to enjoy the tour more properly.I hope this introduction may lead the reading visitors to remember these spots as the 9th Sight of the village.

이야기가 가득한 ‘우리빛깔공방’북촌 한옥마을의 골목 구석구석을 걷다보면 아늑한 공방을 자주 볼 수 있다. 우리가 찾은 첫 번째 공방은 ‘우리빛깔공방’인데, 이곳은 섬유공예 작가 정인의 톡톡 튀는 아이디어가 동과 서, 옛날과 현대의 어우러짐으로 녹아내려 있다. 어느 하나, 작품이 아닌 것이 없는 그녀의 공방에는 순수함과 예술적 깊이 그리고 또 하나, 바로 이야기가 있다. 작품 하나 하나에 담겨있는 이야기들이 보는 것에 지친 관광객들에게 흥미를 더해주는 것이다. 그녀가 귀에 쏙쏙 들어오는 이야기를 들려주다 보면 어느새 사람들은 초롱초롱한 눈빛으로 그녀를 바라보고 있다. 물론 영어설명이 가능한 그녀의 유창한 영어실력도 외국인들을 주목하게 하는데 한 몫 한다. 공방의 작품에 대해 설명이 끝나고 나면 그녀는 관광객들과 함께 북촌투어를 떠난다. 허겁지겁 다음 관광장소로 떠나는 여행객이 안타까워 시작한 이 투어는 어느 여행사보다 알차고 환상적이다. 세계 곳곳에 전시되고 있는 작품들 그리고 그녀의 공방을 함께 보고 있으면 마치 세계를 한 눈에 보고 있는 것 같은 느낌이다. 아, 보는 것은 여느 전시관과 다를 것이 없지 않은가? 우리빛깔공방은 따뜻한 인심 속에서 보고 만지며 자유롭게 사진도 찍을 수 있다.

Woori Bikkal Workshop Full of StoriesWhile walking every corner of Bukchon Hanok Village, people can often see the cozy workshops. The first exploration I made was ‘Woori Bikkal Workshop’(workshop of traditional colors) where sparking ideas of textile crafts artist Jeong-in harmonize the east and west, tradition and modernity. Every work in her workshop has purity, artistic depth, and stories in particular. Stories of every work add fun and interest to the visitors wearied by seeing.While listening to her easy-to-understand stories, people become very attentive and enlightened. Surely, her eloquent English must help to attract visiting foreigner’s attention.After completing her explanation about the crafts, she leaves for further tour of the

village along with the tourists. This tour, which started to help those tourists who hurriedly leave as shortly as seeing, is more fruitful and fantastic than those of any other travel agency. When people view same crafts exhibited in many parts of the world and here at her workshop, they may feel as if seeing the world at a glance. Viewing is same as other exhibitions but this workshop allows people to freely touch and take a photo of the crafts.

과거로 돌아가는 마법상자 ‘설경 나래옷 공방’두 번째로 찾아간 공방은 ‘설경 나래옷 공방’이다. 이 공방은 관광객, 어린이, 공예를 배우고자 하는 사람들등을 대상으로 하는 각종 체험과 교육프로그램이 진행되고 있는 공간으로 우리빛깔공방과는 또 다른 매력이 넘치고 있다.체험 프로그램으로는 ‘우리 옷 입고 문화체험하기’, 천연 염색 체험, 기타 규방공예체험 등 우리 것의 아름다움을 전해주는 내용으로 가득하며 궁중 의례에 쓰인 왕과 왕비의 복식을 입고 사진을 찍는 체험도 진행된다. ‘포토존’이라 불리는 이 체험은 공방 이곳 저곳에서 다양한 포즈로 즐길 수 있어 잠시 동안 그 시대의 왕과 왕비가 되어 볼 수 있다. 이러한 여러 가지 프로그램은 일정이 빠듯한 관광객들이 알찬 체험을 즐길 수 있도록 예약제로 운영되며 이외에도 전문적으로 배울 수 있는 아카데미도 있어 관광객, 초보자, 전문가 모두가 함께 우리의 것을 누리고 즐길 수 있다. 설경 나래옷 공방의 프로그램은 진짜 한옥에서 진행되는 체험으로 마치 그 시대에 돌아가는 듯 한 착각을 불러일으킨다. 우리나라 의상문화의 아름다움을 가슴 깊이 느낄 수 있는 마법 상자 같은 설경 나래옷 공방의 체험은 빠뜨리면 안될거 같다.

‘Seolgyeong Naraeot Workshop’, A Magic Box to the PastThe second visit was to Seolgyeong Naraeot Workshop(workshop of traditional clothes). This workshop is full of attractions other than Woori Bikkal Workshop, as a place where various experience and educational programs are held for the tourists, children and people who want to learn crafts.This place is filled with contents showing beauty of Korean traditions through experience programs such as ‘Cultural experiences by wearing traditional clothes’, experience of natural dye and experience of women’s quarters crafts. Also there is a program in which people can take a photo wearing the costumes of the king and queen. This experience program called ‘Photo zone’ allow people to demonstrate with various poses here and there at the workshop and fall into the illusion of being a king or queen even for a while. These programs are run on a reservation basis to give more effective experience to the busy tourists and also there is a professional academy to give a lesson about those costumes. As a whole, here all the people including the tourists, beginners and experts are able to appreciate traditions of the country.This experience program, performed at a real Hanok, makes people fall into an illusion of living in those old times. 닭의 매력, 그 깊은 곳으로공방의 매력에 흠뻑 빠져있는 여러분, 마지막 추천 코스가 남아있으니 마음을 가다듬자. 체험사진과 직접 만든 공예를 손에 들고 북촌 한옥마을의 정겨운 골목을 구석구석 누볐다면 이제 큰 길가로 나와 ‘서울 닭 문화관’을 즐겨보는 것은 어떨까. 서울 닭 문화관은 닭의 다섯 가지 덕목 문(文), 무(武), 용(勇), 인(仁), 신(信)을 다루며 우리 곁에 있던 닭을 새롭게 조명한다.

문을 열고 들어서면 화려한 닭, 우스꽝스러운 닭, 아기자기한 닭 등 흥미로운 닭의 모습들이 펼쳐지고 있다. 그리고 또 하나, 어렸을 적 할아버지 무릎을 베고 누워 듣던 옛날 이야기 같은 이건식 관장의 닭 이야기가 있다. 이건식 관장은 서울 닭 문화관을 방문하는 사람들에게 각 작품에 대한 닭 이야기를 들려준다. 아이가 오면 아이의 눈높이에서, 어른이 오면 어른의 눈에 맞춘 그의 설명은 ‘하하, 호호’ 웃음소리가 가득하게 한다. 관람 후에는 머그컵에 닭을 그려보는 것이나 가족과 함께 알을 품은 닭 인형을 만드는 체험도 즐길 수 있다. 이 외에도 초등학생을 대상으로 방학프로그램이나 주말을 활용한 어린이디자인 주말학교가 있으니 어른, 아이 할 것 없이 모두가 닭에게 친근함을 느낄 수 있다.전시관 1층은 지구촌 다문화 이해를 위해 세계 각국의 닭들을 자원으로 주제별 테마전을 하며 2층은 조선민중의 예술인 민화와 꼭두닭으로 상설전시를 한다. 관람시간은 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지이며 매주 월요일, 명절연휴는 휴관한다. 관람료는 일반 3천원, 어린이 2천원이며 체험료는 별도이다

Into Deep Attractions of Chicken While you are deeply attracted by workshops, there is one more course to recommend to you.Since we have walked around many cozy corners in Bukchon Hanok Village with photos and self-made crafts in one hand probably, it is time for us to come out to the big street to see ‘Seoul Museum of Chicken Art’. This museum sheds new light on chicken by introduction of their five virtues – literature, force, courage, benevolence and trust.Entering the museum, you can see various interesting looks of chicken - showy, funny, cute.What is more, there is a story-telling by the director of the museum Lee Geon-sik, recalling the visiting listeners to their childhood. On each work displayed, he tells the story related with chicken. His explanation is made differentially to children and adults to keep pace with the level of the listeners, inducing hearty laughter during his explanation. After viewing the museum, you can draw chicken on mugs or experience to make a doll of chicken bearing an egg together with your family. Apart to these, it runs a vacation program for elementary school children and a weekend school of children design over the weekends. So, everybody,whether a child or an adult, may feel familiar to chicken.On the ground floor, there runs a thematic exhibition using worldwide chicken to contribute to understanding of multi-cultures around the globe among the visitors. On the second floor, there is a standing exhibition of crest of chicken and folk paintings, art of people during the Joseon Dynasty. It opens from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday and is closed on every Monday and national holidays. Admission fee is 3,000won/2,000won each for adults and children, while there is extra fee for experience.

서울 탑골공원 뒤편으로 종로구 낙원동 악기상가를 돌아 들어가면 골목을 따라 떡집과 아귀찜 식당들이 줄지어 들어서 있다. 아귀찜의 매콤한 냄새가 우리의 코를 간질이는 이 골목 안에는 ‘줄 서서 먹는 집’이라고 불리는 가장 오래된 아귀찜 집이 있다.

우리는 저녁시간이 되면 소주 한잔과 함께 아귀찜을 먹으려는 사람들이 많아 행여나 먹지 못할까봐 저녁시간 전 늦은 오후에 도착했다. 그래서 인지 우리가 도착했을 땐 한산한 여느 식당과 다름이 없었다. 그런데 웬걸. 우리가 자리에 앉은 후 얼마 되지 않아 손님이 차례차례로 들어와 어느새 식당이 북적북적 거렸다. 그렇게 손님 구경을 하고 있을 무렵 우리가 주문한 아귀찜이 향긋한 바다냄새를 품고 식탁에 놓여졌다. 이 아귀찜 집의 반찬은 다른 것 없이 물김치와 깍두기가 나오고 양념간장으로는 고추냉이가 아닌 노란색 겨자장을 준다. 아귀찜을 먹기 전, 입맛을 돋우는 시원한 물김치를 한 숟갈 떠먹는 것도 좋다.이제 김이 모락모락 나는 아귀를 맛보자. 아귀의 쫄깃쫄깃한 살을 한 입 베어 물고 아삭아삭 감칠맛 나게 씹히는 콩나물을 겨자를 푼 양념 간장에 푹 찍어 함께 먹으니, 세상을 다가진 것 같았다. 우리는 모두 입 안에서 펼쳐지는 향연에 취했고 밥까지 양념장에 비벼 싹싹 비웠다. 참, 사장님의 비법이 담긴 양념장으로 만든 볶음밥은 오후 3시까지만 주문할 수 있으니 참고 하시라. 그때가 지나면 맛볼 수가 없다.낙원동 마산 아귀찜 식당의 사람들은 대체로 단골손님으로 보였다. 저녁시간이 되지도 않았는데 포장해 가는 손님도 여럿 있었다. 손님들은 아귀찜이 좋은지 마냥 행복한 듯 즐거운 담소를 나누는 모습이었다. 은박지를 크게 벅벅 찢어 그 위에 아귀찜을 푸짐하게 쏟아 부어 익숙하게 싸주시는 아주머니, 하하 호호 웃으며 아귀찜을 즐기는 손님들. 그들은 아귀찜의 맛과 향뿐만 아니라 이 식당의 세월을 함께 느끼고 있었다.Entering around Musical Instruments Shopping Center, Nakwon-dong, Jongno-gu behind Tapgol Park, there are lines of rice-cake shops and aguijjim(steamed monkfish with spicy sauce) restaurants along the alley. In this alley where spicy smells of aguijjim tickle people’s noses, there is the oldest aguijjim restaurant nicknamed ‘Queuing House’.

We arrived there around five o’clock in the afternoon suspecting that in the evening time, there would be so many people to eat aguijjim over soju that we couldn’t join. We thought our tactics worked as the restaurant was not busy as any other restaurant at that time. But, people started to come one after another and soon the restaurant was full of people. While we were watching the visitors, aguijjim was put on the table with its fragrant ocean smell. Side dish of this restaurant is merely flat kimchi and kkakdugi(sliced radish kimchi) and yellow mustard sauce is served instead of horseradish as seasoning sauce. Before taking main dish, you can take a spoonful of cool flat kimchi to stimulate your taste. Now let’s taste steaming aguijjim. You would be so happy if you bite one mouthful of chewy flesh of monkfish and then eat it together with tasty bean sprouts by putting seasoning sauce made of mustard. We were so fascinated by the fest of taste in the mouth that we ate out the steamed rice mixing with seasoning sauce to the bottom. Note that fried rice made from seasoning sauce of the owner’s own recipe could be ordered only up to 3 o’clock in the afternoon. After that time, it is not available. Customers at Masan Agujjim, Nakwon-dong appeared to be regular visitors in general. Several people were taking away aguijjim even before evening time. Satisfied with its taste, customers went on chatting with happy look. A serving madam tearing foil in a big size to pack the takeaway abundantly and people enjoying its taste with happy laughter. They seem to enjoy fragrance and taste of aguijjim as well as the atmosphere of this place.

Exciting Performance of Traditional Korean ArtPan빠르게 흘러가는 시간 속에서, 전통의 가치를 느껴 보고 싶다면 ‘판’ 공연을 보러 가자. ‘판’이란 어떤 일이 벌어지는 자리 또는 그 장면을 의미하는 말로써 사람들이 모여 서로 소통하고 즐기며 연희를 펼치던 우리 전통예술의 마당이다.

If you would like to feel value of tradition in rapidly-changing modern times, let’s go to see ‘Pan’ performance. Pan, which means a place or scenes of some events, is space of Korea’s traditional art through which ordinary people used to gather, communicate, and perform plays joyfully.

공연이 시작되는 순간, 무대가 아닌 뒤쪽 입구에서 꽹과리, 북, 장구 등의 신명나는 가락으로 공연자들이 흥을 돋우며 등장을 한다. 이때부터, 잊고 지냈던 우리 전통의 소리가 들리기 시작 하며 나도 모르게 손으로 박자를 맞추는 흥을 느끼는 순간이 펼쳐지게 되는 것이다.첫 순서로, ‘축원’이 시작하는데 축원은 공연을 보러온 관객들에게 복을 기원하는 노래와 굿을 연상케 하는 춤이 함께 어우러지는데, 관객들의 건강과 복을 빌어 주는 내용을 담고 있다. 모든 공연 속에는 무대 양옆에 자리한 스크린에서 영어·일어·중국어가 다 번역되어 내용을 전달하기에 외국인과 함께 공연을 느끼며 즐기는 것에는 아무런 문제가 없다.두 번째 순서로, ‘일고화락’이라는 공연이 진행되는데 엄청 큰 3개의 대북의 소리로 관객을 압도하게 된다. 다양한 북의 장단과 함께 혼을 다해 연주하는 장구의 공연으로 관객들의 재미를 더해가는 것이다. 연주자들의 악기와 하나가 되는 것 같은 혼이 있는 표정들이 관객들에게 더 감동을 주는 것 같다. 세 번째 순서인, 판소리 공연은 ‘심청가’로 가장 극적인 장면으로 꼽히는 눈뜨는 대목을 소리로 보여주는데 관객들과 함께 하는 추임새를 유도하여 ‘얼쑤’, ‘좋구나’, ‘이쁘다’, ‘잘한다’의 자연스러운 추임새로 어느새 관객과 소리꾼은 하나가 되어간다.네 번째 순서인, ‘삼도농악가락’은 전통시대의 농촌에서 농업과 함께 사물놀이 공연으로 일하는 즐거움을 찾았던 것을 보여주는데 장구·징·북·꽹과리의 역동성 넘치는 공연모습을 관객들에게 보여주면서 우리 전통악기의 전통적인 소리의 놀라움을 보여 준다. 다섯 번째 코너인 ‘희로애락’에서는 한 오백년의 노랫가락에 맞추어 한국무용의 애절함과 한국인의 한(恨)을 표현하다가, 뱃노래의 노랫가락으로 흥겨운 배 젓는 동작과 함께 즐거운 노래 소리를 들려준다. 마지막 순서로 진행되는 ‘판놀음’에서는 관객과 함께 대화를 주고받는 탈춤과 놀이 한판이 벌어지는데 봉산의 탈과 안동의 하회탈 등이 어우러져 해학적이고 익살스러운 공연이 펼쳐진다.‘우리 것이 가장 좋은 것이여’라는 말이 생각나는 공연으로 잊고 지냈던 전통문화의 소중함, 특히 음악으로 하나 될 수 있는 교감을 통해 한국인뿐만 아니라 외국인 관광객들도 한국의 전통문화를 경험하는 좋은 기회가 될 것 같다.

When the performance starts, performers appear from the entrance side - instead on stage - perking up the audience with exciting melody by kkwaenggari(gong), drum, janggu(double-headed drum). From this moment, I started to hear the sound of our tradition so far forgotten and unconsciously kept beat with the hands in excitement. In the first part of ‘Chukwon’(Invocation), songs wishing fortune to the audience are mixed with dances associated with exorcism. This part contains contents of wishing health and fortune to the audience.

To convey its contents to foreigners, the performance is translated in English, Japanese and Chinese on screens of both sides of stage and foreigners won’t have any problem to understand and enjoy. In the second part of ‘Ilgowharak’(drums & harmony), sound of three giant drums overwhelms the audience. Here, the audience becomes more excited with fun through jangu performed in all spirits in tune with various drums. Spiritual appearance of the performers becoming one with their instruments seems to move the audience with more impact. The third part is performance of ‘Simcheong-ga Pansori’(Korean traditional narrative song). Here, the most dramatic scene of eye-opening is performed with songs and sound. Inter-song exclamations such as ‘wow’, ‘good’ ‘pretty’ ‘well-done’ induce the audience to join the scene and they become one with the singers. The fourth part of ‘Music of Samdo Farmers’ shows farmers’ joy of farming through performance of samulnori(traditional percussion quartet) in the traditional agricultural age. By demonstrating dynamic performance using janggu, jing, drum and kkwaenggari, it typically shows off the surprising sound of Korea’s traditional musical instruments.In the fifth part of ‘Hiroaerak’(joy, anger, tragedy & happiness), firstly mournfulness of Korean dance and Korean’s sorrow is expressed in tune with song of Hanobaeknyeon(five hundred years) and then it moves to joyful songs along with cheerful rowing gestures of performers in tune with Baennorae(boat song).In the last part of ‘Pannoleum’(pan play), there is mask dance and play in which performers interact with the audience by talk. All in all, this last part produces witty and comic performance with mixture of Bongsan masks and Andong Hahoe masks.The performance reminds people of the saying that ‘Our traditional things are best’. By appreciation of traditional culture and communion via music to become one among people, this performance may offer a good opportunity for both Koreans and foreign visitors to experience Korea’s traditional culture.

12-14Tourism Information: Spring of Gyeongbokgung Palace by Power BloggerSpring of Gyeongbokgung Seen by Power BloggerWritten by Gang Gyeong-won, tour power blogger Photos provided by the Office of Gyeongbokgung Palace계속 겨울이 이어질 것 같았던 시간들이 지나고, 따뜻한 햇살이 봄이 온 것을 알리고 있는 요즘 많은 관광객들로 붐비고 있는 경복궁을 찾았다. 경복궁의 정문인 광화문을 들어서면 흥례문 뒤로 국가의 큰 행사를 치르거나 왕이 신하들의 조례를 받는 근정전이 자리 잡고 있고 근정전을 중심으로 왕이 일반 집무를 보는 사정전을 비롯해서 수정전, 교태전, 경회루, 향원정 등이 경복궁을 이루고 있다. I joined many people visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace these days, since warm sunshine signaled landing of the spring leaving behind long and cold winter. On entering Gwanhwamun, the main entrance to the palace, there is Geunjeongjeon behind Heungryemun, where the king granted audiences to his subjects or the county’s important ceremonies took place. Centered on Geunjeongjeon, Gyeongbokgung is composed of Sajeongjeon-the king’s main executive office-, Sujeongjeon, Gyotaejeon, Gyeonghoeru, Hyangwonjeon.

국보 223호로 지정된 근정전은 경복궁의 정전으로 정종을 비롯한 조선 전기의 여러 왕들이 이곳에서 즉위식을 하였다. 근정전은 밖에서 볼 때는 2층이지만 건물 내부는 아래·위가 트인 단일 층으로 제일 안쪽에 왕권을 상징하는 해와 달, 다섯 봉우리의 산이 그려진 ‘일월오악도’가 놓여 있고 그 앞에 임금의 자리인 어좌가 있으며 그 위를 화려하게 장식하여 왕의 위세가 돋보이게 하였다.근정전 뒤편에 자리 잡고 있는 편전인 사정전은 왕이 평상시에 거처하면서 정사를 보던 건물로 앞면 5칸, 옆면 3칸의 단층 팔작지붕이다. 사정전 오른편에 자리 잡고 있는 앙부일구는 네발 달린 반구형의 솥처럼 생겼기 때문에 붙여진 해시계이다. 사정전을 뒤돌아 가면 왕과 왕비의 침전영역이 둘로 구분되어 있는데, 하나는 왕의 침전인 강녕전이고, 다른 하나는 강녕전의 후면에 있는 양의문을 통하여 들어가는 왕비의 침전인 교태전이다.

교태전 뒤쪽으로는 다양한 화초를 심어 화계를 꾸민 중국에서 가장 아름답고 신비롭다는 아미산의 형태를 인공으로 조성한 언덕이 있다. 아미산 언덕에는 벽돌을 맞추어 배열하고 그사이에는 회를 발라 교태전 온돌에서 나오는 연기가 빠져 나갈 수 있는 굴뚝을 세웠는데 6각형의 면에 덩굴 무늬, 학, 박쥐, 봉황, 소나무, 매화, 국화, 불로초, 바위, 새, 사슴 따위의 무늬를 조화롭게 배치하였다.경복궁 후원에는 향원지라는 연못이 있는데 연못 한가운데 인공의 섬을 만들고 그 위에 육각형 정자를 지어서 “향기가 멀리 퍼져나간다”는 향원정이 있고 향원지를 건너는 다리는 “향기에 취한다”는 뜻의 취향교이다. 또한 경복궁, 광화문 및 흥례문 광장에서는 연중행사로(매주 화요일 휴무) 3월~6월, 9월~11월(10:00~15:00)에는 시간 중 매 정시마다 본행사인 궁성문 개폐, 수문장교대의식 및 순라의식이 열리고 1월, 2월, 7월, 8월, 12월(10:00~16:00)에는 입직행사로 약식수문장교대의식과 파수재현을 볼 수 있으며 이 행사는 한국문화보호재단 주최로 문화체육관광부, 문화재청이 후원한다.

Gyeongbokgung witnessed the coronation ceremonies of several kings including the King Jeongjong during the first half of the Josen Dynasty. Outwardly, it looks like two floor building but actually its inside is made with a single floor with high ceiling. In its innermost, there lies ‘Ilweoloakdo’ symbolic of royal authority by drawings of sun, moon and five mountains and in its front, the king’s chair is placed with its upper part decorated splendidly to show the king’s authority. Sajeongjeon, located behind Geunjeongeon, is the place where the king performed his executive duties during his normal stay here. It is a single floor building made of five rooms in the front and three rooms in its flank together with a gable roof. Angbu-ilgu, which is located at the right side of Sajeongjeon, is a sundial named after its shape looking like a four-footed dome sot(traditional caldron). Behind Sajeongjeon, there come separate sleeping quarters of the king and queen; Gangnyeonjeon, the king’s quarters and Gyotaejeon, the queen’s which is accessed through Yanguimun gate behind the king’s quarters. Behind Gyotaejeon, there comes an artificial hill made in imitation of China’s Amisan which was said to be one of the most beautiful and mysterious hills in China with its plantation of various flowers to form a flower garden. On the hill, bricks were arranged in order and between them, lime was covered to make chimneys through which smoke of Gyotaejeon could go out. The face of hexagonal chimneys was harmoniously decorated with patterns of ivy, crane, bat, phoenix, pine, apricot flower, chrysanthemum, elixir plant, rock, birds, and deer. In the backyard of Gyeongbokgung, there is a pond named Hyangwonji and at its center, an artificial island was made. On the island, there is a hexagonal pavilion called Hyangwonjeong – pavilion of “far reaching fragrance” – and also a connecting bridge called Chwihyanggyo – bridge “intoxicated with fragrance”. In the squares of Gyeongbokgung, Gwanghwamun and Heungryemun, annual events take place; Main events of Opening/Closing of the Palace Gate, Gate Guards Rotation Ceremony and Patrol Ceremony take place at the each hour during 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from March through June, and September through November(closed on every Tuesday). Also people can view informal Gate Guards Rotation Ceremony and Guarding Representation as ceremony of officer’s turn for night duty during January, February, July, August and December(10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). These events are organized by Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism and Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea.

따스한 햇살이 내리쬐는 봄 날, 나른한 오후. 당신은 갑작스레 커피 한 잔을 마시고 싶어 졌다. 그리고 가까운 동네 카페를 찾았다. 그런데 어떻게 해야 할까. 아메리카노, 카페모카, 카라멜 마끼아또…….이 수많은 커피의 이름은 그렇다 치고, 드립커피 종류는 왜 그리도 많은 것인지. 케냐에 콜롬비아에 에디오피아에, 나라 별로 커피가 한 종류씩 다 있으니 이건 뭐 커피 마시기도 전에 하루가 다 가겠다. 이런 난감한 상황에 당신을 도와 줄 구세주가 있다면? 어쩌면 종로구 삼청동 길목에 들어선 커피볶는집 ‘연두’에서 당신의

고민을 해결할 수 있을 지도 모른다.

종로구 화동 한 자락에 자리한 ‘연두’는 2006년 문을 열었다. 당시 원두를 직접 수입하고 볶아서 핸드드립으로 내리는 집이 흔하지 않은 상황에서 카페를 꾸렸고, 지금까지 이어오고 있는 것이다. 이집 커피 맛은 세계 각 지역 원두의 독특한 맛이 살아있다. 특히 몇몇 메뉴에는 유기농 원두를 사용하고 있다.최근 소비자들이 공정무역을 선호하기 시작하면서 유기농 커피를 맛보려는 추세가 점점 높아지고 있기 때문이다.여기서 차를 마시다 보면 음료에 어울리게 고안된 잔을 사용해 맛과 향, 그리고 분위기는 배가 된다. 맛을 살리기 위해서 찻잔 하나에도 신경 쓰는 편인데, 양이 많지 않아 금방 식는 에스프레소는 두꺼운 잔을 써서 열 손실을 최소화 한다. 게다가 더군다나 개점 이후에 가격을 올리지 않고 있고, 스트레이트 커피는 안 먹어본 커피로 바리스타 추천에 의해 무한 리필이 가능하다.이곳은 바(Bar)처럼 바리스타가 직접 커피를 추천하고 손님과 함께 정다운 담소를 나누는 분위기라 단골손님이 많은 편이다. 언제든 바에 자리를 잡고 바리스타와 커피에 대해 궁금한 것이 있다면 물어봐도 괜찮을 듯.마지막으로 백석훈 점장에게 이 집을 찾는 사람들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있는지 물었다. “아직도 많은 분들이 자판기 커피가 가장 맛있다고 생각하시고 다른 커피를 시도를 안 하시려 하는 분들이 많아요. 전문 드립커피 전문점에서 마시는 커피는 어렵다고 생각하는 분들이 많거든요. 하지만 커피는 하나의 기호식품 일 뿐, 특권층만 즐기는 것이 아닙니다. 맛을 분석하지 말고 이제는 커피를 즐겨주세요!”

Supposed you want to have a cup of coffee suddenly on a shiny and drowsy afternoon in the spring. And then you visit the near cafe in your town. But you may be at a loss. Americano, Cafe Mocha, Caramel Macchiato…. Apart from so many names of coffee, you may also find there are such many sorts of drip coffee as well. There seems each country has its own kind of coffee- Kenya, Columbia, Ethiopia, and so on -. One day may elapse before you drink a cup of coffee. Is there any savior to help you on this occasion? Probably, the answer may be ‘Yeondu’, a coffee roasting house at the alley of Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu.

Situated at one corner of Hwa-dong, Jongno-gu, ‘Yeondu’ opened in 2006. The cafe opened at the time when there were not so many hand drip cafes which imported coffee beans directly to roast and since then, it has been running. Unique tastes of coffee beans around the world are vividly reproduced at this cafe. Particularly, organic coffee beans are used in several menu. It is because there is more prevailing tendency these days for the clients to taste organic coffee due to their preference to fair trade coffee.

봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울 사계절 내내 얼음이 존재하는 곳이 있을까? 바로 여기! 아이스갤러리가 있다. 삼청동 정독도서관 맞은편에는 보기만 해도 몸이 꽁꽁 얼어붙을 것 같은 느낌의 아이스갤러리가 위치하고 있다. 빙하지역이 지구 온난화로 점점 사라져 가고 있는 현실에서 ‘사계절 내내 얼음을 보존할 수 있으면 얼마나 좋을까’ 라는 발상에서, 얼음 조각가인 갤러리 관장이 직접 조각하여 만든 작품과 함께 국내 최초로 얼음 조각 체험을 할 수 있는 전시관이기도 하다.

Is there any place in the country where ice exists throughout four seasons? Yes, here it is; Ice Gallery. Opposite Jeongdok Public Library is located Ice Gallery in which people may feel frozen just by viewing. Its establishment is based on the director’s wishful thought that ‘preservation of ice through four seasons would be ideal’ given the fact that glacier zones disappear owing to global warming. Here, sculpture carved by the director of this gallery himself are displayed and it is the first gallery in the country whereby people can experience ice.

궁금하겠지만, 일단 체험관은 나중으로 미루고 아이스갤러리에 온 만큼 작품구경을 먼저 해보자. 얼음 작품 전시실은 체험관보다 한층 밑에 위치해 있다. 안내원의 안내에 따라 계단을 한 걸음 한 걸음 내려갈수록 또 다시 한파가 몰려온 듯 차가운 기온이 온몸을 감싼다. 전시실 입구 로비에는 추위에 대한 배려로 방한복이 준비되어있다. 준비된 방한복까지 차려 입고, 진정으로 얼음을 즐길 자세가 되어있다면 전시실의 문을 활짝 열어 보자.문을 여는 순간 온통 얼음으로 가득 차 있는 얼음 세계가 펼쳐져 있다. 가장 먼저 눈에 띄는 것은 얼음으로 된 미끄럼틀이다. 얼음으로 된 성과 어우러져 있는 이 미끄럼틀을 타고 내려오면 아기자기한 펜션이 우리를 기다리고 있다. 이 펜션에는 얼음으로 된 컴퓨터, 얼음으로 된 텔레비전, 얼음으로 된 침대, 심지어 얼음으로 된 화장실까지 세심하고 꼼꼼하게 조각한 얼음 가구와 가전제품이 여기저기 배치되어 있다. 펜션을 지나면 7080이라는 주제로 70년대 80년대의 생활상을 얼음으로 조각해 놓은 곳이 나온다. 이곳에는 군고구마를 들고 있는 소년, 벌을 서고 있는 아이 그리고 7080세대가 아니면 생소한 구식 핸드폰, 종이 인형이 전시되어 있어 그와 같은 세대라면 어린 시절의 향수를 불러일으킬 수 있을 것이다.

전시관 구경을 다 마쳤다면, 보기만 하는 것보다 보고 만지는 게 더 와 닿고 흥미로운 법이다. 전시관에서 한층 다시 올라가면 앞에서 언급했던 체험관이 펼쳐져 있다. 이 체험이 아무래도 이 아이스갤러리 관람의 하이라이트라고 할 수 있다. 아이스갤러리는 특성상 가족단위로 오는 경우가 많은데, 여기서 진행하고 있는 컵 만들기 체험은 남녀노소 가릴 것 없이 쉽고 재밌게 만들어볼 수 있어 가족과 함께 즐기기에 최고의 장소가 아닐까 생각이 든다. 컵을 만들었다면, 시원한 얼음 컵 속에 음료수를 담아 마셔보고, 기념사진을 찍어보며, 아름다운 추억을 쌓는 것도 또 하나의 재미일 것이다.서울의 북극. 아이스갤러리는 겨울에 온다면 더 많은 볼거리를 선사해 주고, 여름에 온다면 마음까지 시원해지는 기분들 수 있게 만들어진 장소이다. 또한 이곳에서 영하 5도의 맑고 청량한 공기를 가슴 속 깊이 들이 마시면 기분마저 상쾌해지고 맑아질 것이다.

On entering Ice Gallery, you see Ice Experience Hall firstly. You may wonder what the hall is for but let’s firstly watch ice sculpture. Its Exhibition Hall is located one floor below Ice Experience Hall. Each footstep you make downward following the guide may make you feel wrapped with cold waves more and more. On the lobby before its entrance, winter clothes are prepared in consideration of visitor’s cold. If you are ready physically by wearing winter clothes and want to enjoy really, let’s go inside. As soon as you open the door, ice world spreads. The first sight that would attract you is the ice slide. When you slide down the ice slide alongside the ice castle, a cozy pension will meet you. This pension is arranged here and there with computer, TV, bed, toilet, elaborately-made furniture and electronic goods, all of which are made of ice. Passing through the pension, there comes one spot under the theme of 7080 where lifestyles in the 1970s and 80s are carved by ice. There, you can see a boy with roasted sweet potato in his hands, a child under punishment, and old-fashioned mobile phone, paper doll which other generations than the 70s and 80s may feel unfamiliar. It may remind the equivalent generations of their old indelible days.If you have completed to view the exhibition, let’s visit upstairs once again to the Experience Hall because seeing and touching is normally better than just seeing. This place will be the highlight of this gallery surely. Manhaedang, History Revived with Elaborate Care 경복궁, 창덕궁 등 한옥을 들여다본 적은 많지만 실제로 그곳에서 생활해본 적도 없고 심지어 하루 밤을 보낸 경험조차 없는 한국인들이 많을 것이다. 물론 외국인들 중에서도 많은 이들이 서양식 숙박시설에서 보내고 한국을 떠나기 마련이다. 하지만 이 곳, ‘만해당’에서는 다르다. 딱딱하지만 더워질 만큼 따뜻한 방바닥에 이불을 깔고 자는 것은 기본이고, 목재 건물의 느낌을 그대로 느낄 수 있는 한옥 숙박시설이기 때문이다.Many Koreans may have seen Hanok at Gyeongbokgung or Changdeokgung Palace but a few might have spent even one night at Hanok. Also most of foreign visitors tend to leave Korea after staying at the western-style hotels. However, this place ‘Manhaedang’ is different.It is because the guesthouse is a Hanok accommodation in which the guests sleep with bedding on hard but warmed floor basically and are able to feel the nature of wooden building. “잼을 하나 주어도 여러 종류의 잼을 주고, 김을 좋아하는 일본인에게는 있는 김을 모두 챙겨줄 정도다”“They serve various kinds of jam, and take care of Japanese with all of laver they have.”‘만해당’은 한옥 가옥으로서 만해 한용운 선생이 머물렀던 곳으로 알려져 있다. 특히 1916년 만해당에 머물며 불교잡지를 발간해 더욱 그 의미가 깊다. 현재 ‘만해당’을 맡고 있는 이유리씨는 작년 7월쯤 이 곳을 우연한 기회에 발견하게 되었고 당시 거의 쓰러져 가고 있던 빈 집을 숙박시설로 탈바꿈한다.문을 연지 오래되지는 않았지만 한 번 왔던 손님이 두 세 번씩 오는 등 지속적인 관심을 받고 있다. 지난 추석 한 방송의 영향으로 종로구 일대 한옥 숙박 시설에 많은 한국인이 몰리는 추세이고 한류의 영향도 크다. 특히 한 아이돌 그룹의 콘서트가 있던 주에는 만해당을 비롯해 많은 한옥집이 일본팬들로 가득차기도 했다. 이에 이유리 씨는 “요즘에는 일본팬 뿐만이 아니라 전세계에서 다양한 인종, 연령대의 손님들이 모이는 방향으로 나아가고 있다”며 “다만 서울을 일본 혹은 중국 등을 가기 위한 경유지 정도로 잠시 들르는 경우가 아직도 많은 것 같다”고 아쉬움을 표했다.개략적으로 만해당에는 5개의 방이 있다. 숙박 비용은 매실(2인실)의 경우 8만원 난실(2인실), 홍실(2인실)은 7만원, 국실(3인실),청실(3인실)은 10만원이다. 1인당 추가비용이 성인과 초등학생에게 각기 다른 요금으로 더해진다. 만해당 전체를 예약하는 것도 가능하고 장기투숙도 할 수 있다. 많은 인원이 여행왔을 때 2인실인

매실이나 3인실인 국실에서는 6명 정도가 함께 투숙하기도 한다.투숙을 하면 아침밥은 떡국, 백반 등 다양하게 제공된다. 이유리씨는 “아침 식사가 굉장히 중요하다” 며 “굳은 얼굴로 들어와도 아침 식사를 정성스레 준비하면 마음을 여는 것이 느껴진다”고 말했다. 실제로 만해당의 아침 식사는 상당히 인기가 좋다. 이 곳에서 투숙한 바 있는 전수경 씨는 “잼을 하나 주어도 여러 종류의 잼을 주고, 김을 좋아하는 일본인에게는 있는 김을 모두 챙겨줄 정도다”라며 “그 정성스러움과 편안하게 해주는 마음씨에 감동을 느낀다”고 말했다.아침 식사 외에도 소반 작업실의 소반 작업 모습 등을 볼 수 있고 단체 손님의 요청이 있을 때 솟대를 작은 사이즈로 함께 만드는 프로그램도 제공한다. 또한 만두 빚기를 같이 하며 숙박만 하는 것이 아니라 한국을 실제로 체험할 수 있도록 노력하고 있다.

‘Manhaedang’, which is a Hanok(traditional Korean house), is learned as the place where Manhae Hanyong-un once lived. It is more meaningful in particular by the fact that he published a Buddhist magazine during his stay at this place in 1916. Ms Lee Yu-ri, who takes care of Manhaedang now, spotted this site by chance in July last year and then the almost destroyed house has been reconstructed to what it is.Opened not before long, this house has been attracting continuous attention among the people – some who once visited come several times again. Influenced by broadcast of a TV on last thanksgiving holidays, recently a number of Koreans tend to use accommodation at Jongno area, while Hanok home stay is also positively affected by the Korean Wave. Particularly during a week when the concert of an idol group took place, many Hanok including Manhaedang were full of the Japanese fans. Ms Lee Yu-ri said:”These days, not only the Japanese, also the guests from various races and ages around the world visit Hanok.” She also expressed a regret adding: “In many cases, they seem to stay just for a while in Seoul as a stopover to Japan or China.”Roughly, there are five rooms in Manhaedang. Accommodation charges are 80,000won for Maesil(for two persons), 70,000won for Hongsil(two) and 100,000won each for Guksil(three) and Cheongsil(three) for one night. Extra charges for one more person each are added differentially to adults and elementary school children. Reservation of whole of the guesthouse or a long-term stay is also available. In an occasion of group tour, six guests are used to stay together at Maesil(two) or Guksil(three).During the guest’s stay, various menus including tteokguk, baekban are served. She says: “Actually, breakfast is very important. I feel sometimes elaborately prepared breakfast warms a bit awkward relations which the people may have on first encounter.” In fact, breakfast of this guesthouse is very popular among the guests. Ms Jeon Su-kyeung, who stayed at this house before, explained: “For example, they serve various kinds of jam, and take care of the Japanese who like dried lave, with all of laver they have. I am touched by their elaboration and service mind to make the guests feel at home.” Apart from breakfast service, they show the scene of preparing a small dining table in their kitchen and provide the guests with a program of making sotdae(pole wishing for a good harvest) with a small size on the guest’s request. 작년 9월~11월 열렸던 폴 스미스 전시에 이어서 현재 전시되고 있는 디터 람스전은 산업디자인계의 전설 디터 람스의 대표작품들을 소개하는 전시로 독일 프랑크푸르트의 응용미술관과 일본 오사카 산토리미술관이 공동으로 기획한 순회전으로 본 전시는 일본 오사카와 도쿄를 거쳐 올해 영국 런던 디자인 미술관과 프랑크푸르트에서 전시되었으며, 작년 12월부터 올해 3월까지 대림미술관에서 전시된 이후 미국의 샌프란시스코 현대미술관에서 선보여질 예정이다.이번 대림미술관에서 열리는 전시 타이틀 <Less and More – The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams 디터 람스의 디자인 10계명>은 디터 람스의 디자인 철학 “Less but better”를 반영한 것으로, 시대를 아우르는 그의 디자인 제품들을 독일 디자인의 역사 속에서 이야기하고 있다. 이번 전시는 디터 람스가 40여 년간 브라운사를 위해 디자인팀과 개발한 주요 제품들이 총 망라되며 Vitsoe사를 위해 디자인한 가구들도 함께 전시된다. 그러나 전시 ‘Less and More’는 단순히 뛰어난 디자인 제품만을 소개하는 것이 목적이 아니라, 40여 년이라는 오랜 기간 동안 시대를 앞서나가는 기업의 이미지를 만들어 낸 한 디자이너와 그의 팀 그리고 기업과의 긴밀한 관계를 조명해 보는 전시이다. 한편, 4월~6월 전시 될 유르겐 텔러 전시는 마크 제이콥스, 비비안웨스트우드 등 럭셔리 브랜드의 진보적인 캠페인 이미지로 우리에게 익숙한 독일의 사진작가 유르겐 텔러의 강렬하면서도 감각적인 패션, 광고사진 이외에도 상업적 요소를 배제한 본인의 자전적인 이야기들을 반영한 도시와 인물사진들을 소개하는 내용으로 구성될 예정이다. 자세한 사항은 홈페이지 http://www.daelimmuseum.org에서 알 수 있다.

Dieter Rams Exhibition, which currently takes place following last year’s Paul Smith Exhibition during September to November, introduces representing works of Dieter Rams, a legend of industrial designs. As a circulating exhibition of joint projects by Frankfurt Museum for Applied Art and Santory Museum, Osaka, Japan, the exhibition was on display starting from Osaka, Tokyo, Japan and to London Design Museum and Frankfurt Museum this year. The exhibition is due to land on San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, after completion of exhibition at Daelim Museum from December last year to March this year.

The title of this exhibition <Less and More – The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams> represents design philosophy of Dieter Rams -“Less but better”- and tells his decades-spanning design works in context of German design history. This exhibition shows all of main products Dieter Rams has created with his design team for Braun over the last 40 years along with furniture designed for Vitsoe. However this exhibition under theme of ‘Less and More’ not only aims to show outstanding design products of his but also, more importantly, aims to shed light on the close relations between the businesses and a designer who has created leading corporate image for long period of 40 years with his design team. In the meanwhile, next Exhibition of Juergen Teller due on April to June, will illuminate Juergen Teller, a German fashion photographer who is familiar to us by his progressive campaign images of such luxury brands as Marc Jacobs and Vivienne Westwood. It will introduce photos of his strong and sensuous fashion and advertisement as well as photos of cities and figures reflecting his autobiographical stories excluding commercial elements.
