WAYS & WORDS“What about ~?” & “How about ~?”Suggesting & Asking an opinionThe expressions “What about ~?” and “How about ~?” are used to ask an opinion on a particular topic or to make suggestions:

» I haven’t decided on a major, yet.

» How about psychology? By asking “How about psychology?” the second speaker is inviting the first speaker to consider psychology as a choice for her major.

RedirectingIn many conversations, the expressions “What about ~” and “How about ~” are used to redirect a topic to another person.

» I’m a business major. What about you?

» My major is computer science.By asking “What about you?” the first speaker is referring to the previous statement (“I’m a business major.” ) and asking — implicitly — what the second speaker’s major is.

The expressions “Me, too” and “Not me” can be used as short responses.

» I’m a first-year student. What about you?

» Me, too. (= “I’m a first-year student, too.”)
