In learning to become a nurse, portfolios can

be used to capture, support and improve this

type of thinking as it develops. The nursing student can connect, share and

present cases and findings and include with

this evidence the reflective commentary that

serves to unveil how they arrived at theirdecision, what information or experiences were

    communicate?

    The popularity of social networking

applications is one indication of how new web-

based technologies are changing ourcommunication preferences.

Before the internet, one-way broadcasts of

information from a small number of major

sources were the norm, i.e., informationreceived from television and radio broadcasts.

    The socialnetworking

    dilemma

Photos and/or journal entries that may

be viewed as seemingly innocent by one

may be interpreted entirely differently byanother audience.

    Biases and judgments naturally occur

that blur what for some might be asimple distinction.

    ChallengesandIssues:

    Privacy & Security

The ease and popularity that both web-based

    social networking and professional e-portfolio

tools bring to users also raises severalchallenges and issues.

Never before has information been so

    accessible or personal.

An e-portfolio is one place that an individualshould have control over what personal

    information is included.

    ChallengesandIssues:

    Privacy & Security

Publishing in open web space users will

likely have to engineer this in

themselves, whereas in larger online e-portfolio systems these capabilities are

    built in.
